Moto X play vs Nexus 5X - General Topics

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, there are so many forums here it's hard to know whether it's the right one or not.
I am deliberating over which of the two devices I should buy, the newly announced Nexus 5X or the Moto X play.
Ever since it was announced, the Moto X seemed like a very good choice, as it has a very big battery, an sd card slot, active display (I just really really love it), and Motorola is trustworthy when it comes to system updates.
I am of course waiting for reviews before knowing which one to buy, I'll be waiting a few months before making that decision.
Basically I use my phone for messaging, some web surfing, little bit of social media. I rarely play games, and never the heavy ones (don't really find the appeal). Most of the time my phone is idle (see no reason for using it if I am near a computer for example or have no one to message with). For those reasons I am not buying some huge phone (like the Nexus 6P or a Galaxy note), I just have no interest in watching movies on my phones or playing heavy games. Also, one of the things that really annoys me with the Nexus 4 is the fact that my battery is dropping too quickly even when idle (for example, 8-9% over night, and I don't have anything open, not 3G, not WIFI, not location, etc.).
My important points for the two phones:
Processor - 808 on the Nexus vs 615 on the Moto X. Which one is better for battery?
Battery - 3630mAh for the Moto X compared to 2700mAh for the Nexus - Moto X wins here.
The sensor hub on the Nexus - sounds very promising, and really appealing to someone like me that used his proximity sensor on the Nexus 4 to unlock the phone and avoid pressing the power button.
If I understood correctly, you can just pick up the phone and it's ambient display will turn on. For me it's simply amazing. While Motorola's active display is also amazing (I used it a lot through other roms and apps) it doesn't have that capability.
5.2' on the Nexus vs 5.5' on the Moto X. I prefer smaller screens so the Nexus here wins.
The Nexus weighs less, that's better.
SD card slot in Moto X only.
The Moto X is missing **a lot** of sensors - including gyroscope and compass which are pretty much basic nowadays.
The Nexus 5X has a fingerprint sensor.
21 MP on the Moto X where the Nexus has 12 MP, though I know it depends on the sensor really, and not just the size of mega pixels. Would love some comments on that.
The Nexus has BT version 4.2 compared to to version 4.0 on the Moto X. Does it really matter?
USB type C on the Nexus. A luxury, but still.
The price! The Moto X seems to be cheaper than the Nexus 5X (and if I will purchase the Nexus, I will buy the 32GB version).
Just by writing this list I realize that the Nexus 5X could be way better, but I am concerned about battery, mostly. Would love your comments mainly on the first item on the list and the camera, but your opinions as well about everything else. I would prefer to see if I missed anything before making this decision.
Thank you.

Well for me I think I would go with the Moto X play because of the big battery that should last a lot longer then the nexus 5x and also one of the best cameras in a Motorola phone. Also it has a micro sd card slot which is nice. The Moto X style/pure is another phone you should look at simular to the nexus 5x. But overall the choice is yours and the nexus 5x is still a great phone.

Camera of Moto X Play is pretty mediocre in performance. Software update is necessary.
As per the price the Nexus is perfect. Only an option for SD card would have been nice!

Thank you for your comment, actually the Moto X style is not a good option for me as it is more of a phone for those heavy users that love big screens that they can play on and watch movies on and etc. And I really dislike big screens, IMO 5' is already too much but there are almost no other options really as all other phones that have smaller screens are also very low-range, so I should move forward, but there has to be some kind of a limit. Also, the Moto X style has a smaller battery (which is weird but whatever).

Were there any talks of a software update? Do you think it's a software issue?

[Q] Moto G vs RAZR i

Hi All
I currently have (HAD: to give it away) a Motorola RAZR i with Intel Inside.
I love the phone, its fast, i like that i has NFC and i like that it has a slot for MicroSD.
I understand that the NFC and the MicroSD is not available on the Moto G.
However i like the fact that the Moto G will have KitKat.
I bought the Razr i for 130 pounds, now i can not buy it again for that price, i only find it for 200.
So my option is buy a Moto G or spend 50 more and buy the RAZRi again.
Cant make my mind up Help?
Thanks
Xiao
I never had a Razr i so I can't help compare them.
But do you have a chance to somehow test the moto g (friend, in a store?). I think that wouls be the best for you to experience which phone you prefer.
Generally to say, I love the battery life, speed, everything about the moto g (also have a n4 and n5). The camera is okay.
And I don't need more than 16gb at all so I don't care about the lack of sdcard slot.

I must agree, love Moto G smoothness, love that motorla support for this phone, love that battery and I also don't need SD slot.
I had Razr (not Razr i) and it was little laggy. And that battery there, I hate it. The good thing is I bought one year old Razr for 140€ and 6 months later I traded it to almost new Moto G (that costs 199€) so I wins with Moto G
One thing I miss is camera. Yes, it doesn't make the best pictures, but it does take some pictures when you need and thats okay.
Moto G will learn you that even the small things can do big miracles
Had (have) the RARZi and bought Moto G just for curiosity, I never switched RZi on again besides for some camera comparisons, in which MG won massively in low light.
Performance wise it is black and white: The Intel Atom is very snappy, databases (SMS) open up slightly faster on RZi than on MG, but the overall performance goes to MG. Battery runtime is about the same, 2-3 days is easy.
Personally I like the AMOLED of RZi, but I got used to LCD in 2 days and now I really enjoy that fabulous display on MG. Brighter, sharper, sunlight readable. WIFI and GPS works hands down better on MG.
In palm of the hand the RZi is edgy and sharp, MG soft and smooth, I like that. Never missed the SD card (I hated it on RZi, because I always searched my files on the wrong place, internal, external, blah), same for NFC - I don't use it. Sound quality is Motorola like very good on both phones.
If I must buy a new phone right now: Moto G, no doubt.
That is my subjective opinion but I hope this helps.
Thanks shaftenberg
Think I am gonna switch to razr I. I love amoled screens . I miss NFC and need a decent camera for daylight shots. Moto G one just doesn't cut it for me. Great phone though

The Razr i is also like what 2 years old?
Did it even get JB, it is old tech now really, my wife had one, it was alright, but I'd go moto G personally.
I have a Razr i and i really loved it since the first day of use, but, I will switch from it to Moto G this next week.
I checked this phone on some stores and friends, the speed is amazing. Fantastic speed, no lags, LCD is really nice and I think it is much better than my Razr's amoled (question of personal opinion).
So, I would go for Moto G.

I loved the RAZR i, I had one 1 year ago and it was fast, unfortunately it lacked dev support and its stuck with Android 4.1.2, but it was a great phone, the lags were very rare, just... it lacked the Moto Love...

I bought the Moto G 16GB today.

Any logic on upgrading from Galaxy Nexus to Moto G?

Hey Guys,
I consider upgrading my Galaxy Nexus to the Moto G.
Specs are pretty similar, even in some parameters the Galaxy Nexus is better (AMOLED vs LCD, thickness, camera)
What do you think? Anyone here done this move?
Thanks
Tom Zach.
I think its a better move overall. Motorola is doing some great stuffs lately. They even beats Google in terms of pushing the updates quickly. Galaxy Nexus's software support was dropped by Google but it still have the community support. I saw many people even moved from Nexus 4 to Moto G.
But from hardware perspective Moto G is bit behind them. Many touchscreen issues are popping up and returned for replacement. G's touchscreen is easy to get broken than any flagship or Nexus phones even though it has Gorilla Glass 3. You got to think twice in the hardware department.
Yeah I upgraded, not looked back.

Hey, but besides the battery life and the speaker, do you really feel like its an improvement?
Seems like the gnex screen and the overall look is superior

To me it feels it was , I got to the point where I despised my gnex.
I've not heard or even experienced these screen issues can't comment on it.
If the moto g had a better camera it'd be even better.
All depends want you want out of your phone really. Battery life and affordability was key key for me.
Not once have I wanted my gnez back tbh

That was my dilemma before making my purchase. But the Nexus 5 is notorious for sub par battery life, poor screen viewing angles and contrast. Moto G doesn't have any of those issues and for the price it was a no brainer for me.

I had the same decision problem. It was between the Nexus 5 and the MotoG. It came down to a few factors for me: 1)The spec bump and screen size were not drastic enough for me to justify the price difference. 2)The screen size on the Nexus 5 was a drawback. I have small hands, and my assumption was that the smaller screen size combined with the rounded form factor would make the MotoG easier to hold and manipulate. 3)The poor battery life on the Nexus 5 compared to thte superior life on the MotoG.
All of those things led me to choose the MotoG over the Nexus 5, and I've been 100% pleased. I have had absolutely no issues with the touchscreen which is always accurate and responsible. The software (KK w/GEL) is buttery smooth -- I have experienced absolutely no lag from the OS in any shape, form, or fashion. Regardless of the specs, it actually operates like a high end device. Having said that, more graphic/cpu intensive games will lag to some degree but I'm not a big Android gamer -- casual games are fine by me.
The screen on the MotoG is perfectly calibrated. I've heard some G's have a pinkish tint, but I have not experienced that. My guess is that they use two different screen vendors, so it may be a roll of the device; however, even the pink tinted screens are still supposedly excellent.
Battery life has been phenomenal.
Unlocking the bootloader and rooting was a piece of cake.
The only big complaint is the camera, but I carry around my Sony NEX-5R most places I go so that's not a huge deal for me.
Overall, this is one of the best phones I've ever owned. The "flagship" phones I've had in the past were always something of a disappointment. I never liked Sense, TouchWiz, etc. which adversely affected performance to the point that it never really felt like I actually had a high-end device. That always led me to root and flash a custom ROM, but I shouldn't have had to do that in order to get a nice user experience.
The MotoG is fantastic. I give it an A+ when you consider its price in relation to its features and usability.
I ended up upgrading to the nexus 5 from a galaxy nexus, but I simultaneously got a moto g for my girlfriend, so I've had a great way of comparing the 2.
The nexus 5 is obviously the better device(no doubt about it), and the battery problems are non existent(at least on my unit, I get very consistent battery life in terms of screen on time at around 4,5 hours). It's definitely one of the best devices on the market and at a fair price much below the immediate competition.
The moto g is obviously a mid range device in comparison, but it is a lot more capable than most other phones on the market and is all around a great phone(definitely worth the cheap upgrade from a galaxy nexus). In direct comparison with the nexus 5 it has a slightly worse camera(the nexus 5 camera is not top notch either though) and slightly better battery life in my experience.
Software vise they are very similar, and since a gpe moto g has been released, they can both expect timely updates.
All in all they are both worth the upgrade from the galaxy nexus(though I had kept it for another year, if I hadn't dropped it and cracked the screen). It comes down to how you use the phone(camera and gaming performance etc.), and your preference in screen size, and price. you get great value for the money with both compared to any other smartphone, though a little more value for money with the moto g.
I've got both, on Verizon though. My typical phone is a Galaxy S4, but my gf broke her GS4, so she stole mine in the meantime. My old backup phone was a Galaxy Nexus, and my current phone is the Moto G. All that said, here's my take.
Moto G Pros:
- Cheap
- Better battery life than Galaxy Nexus
- More responsive
- Feels better in hand & pocket
- Feels sturdier
- Moderately better camera
Moto G Cons:
- Locked bootloader on Verizon (no root or roms)
- No LTE
- Only comes with 8GB storage, with 5.5 usable
- No 802.11 5GHz support
- No BT 4.0 LE (has BT 4.0)
- No KitKat
- No tethering support (I pay for metered data too!, currently using FoxFi USB)
If I didn't depend on my phone for work, I would've bought a good condition Galaxy Nexus or GS3 from Swappa. But the Moto G is acceptable for the next week.
I had the Galaxy Nexus before my Moto G, its definitely worth the upgrade for the battery alone, even with extended battery the Nex was terrible with battery life, similar specs but the moto G runs much better, my Nex was lag-tastic, I see no difference in pics, both are mediocre in that department.

Ae you just talking aobut the Verizon version, the G does have Kitkat and there's a 16 gig version, I dont agree with the Nexus having better battery at all, it was actually terrible, the G's battery is so much better, not even close.

Please reread my post. Yes I'm talking about the Verizon variant, XT1028. Yes I know the GSM has a 16gb option, even a GPE. I wish I that was a viable choice, but I have a tendency of working in the barren deserts of California. Somehow Verizon's EVDO/LTE coverage out there is sufficently reliable.
Also, I said the "Better battery life than Galaxy Nexus", as a "Moto G Pro" and not a Con.
I really like the Moto G. It's just very limited. I would say its very similar to the experience of using an iPhone 4. Fixed & limited storage, snappy for the OS at the time, nice to hold and use. But there are better options out there.
I upgraded from a Nexus 4 and I'm very happy: battery life is awesome and the phone is still smooth, Moto G display is way better than the Galaxy Nexus one (I owned a Galaxy Nexus)
Hi guys,
I am using Galaxy Nexus with CM11 M11 at the moment. Is it worthy to upgrade to Moto G 2014? How much faster do you guys feel when upgrading from GaNex to Moto G 2014 in term of a normal user: Maps, GPS, Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, photo taking - NO gaming.
Is 1GB of RAM giving you lagging when switching between apps? Is Nexus 5 more worthy for the upgrade rather than Moto G 2014?

Hey, both of you guys are complaining about the camera of this Moto G. Is that the Moto G 2014 you're talking about? I see the photos taken by Moto G 2014 look pretty nice - some even says it's even comparable with Nexus 5 camera.

The Nexus 5 is about USD350 vs. Moto G 2014 is abt USD218 at where I am atm.

Thanks for the confirmation. Btw, do you feel a lot of lag with your Moto G (the hardware is identical with Moto G 2014)? Like when browsing Internet then switching to either Maps, FB, Instagram or Camera, etc.

Getting a new phone.

Hello guys.
I'm using a Nexus 4 now and after about two years it's starting to get broken.
I tought about getting a new phone but I have few requirments, hope you guys can help me with it.
1 (and the most important). smaller form factor than the Nexus 4's has.
2. Good battery life.
3. A well supported phone ( Roms, Guides, etc.).
I can get along with 720P and not having a 810SD xP...
I almost don't play games on the phone and the S4 Pro of the N4 is more than enough for me.
Thanks in advance!

Moto X 2013 or Sony Xperia Z1/Z3 compact. The Moto X has a 4.7" screen like the Nexus 4, but is smaller and lighter. In specs it appears thicker, but that's because the back is curved, and the phone is extremely comfortable to hold and use. Battery life is average, which makes it better than the Nexus 4, which is piss-poor. Some ROMSs are available, but lots of people stick with rooted stock, as it's very fast and minimal, but with some cool features. As for the Sonys, the Z3 Compact is the king of small Androids. Great specs, dual front speakers, very small, and almost absurdly good battery life. The Z1C isn't as nice, but is still a very good phone, and cheaper. Development is somewhat weak for the Sonys though, but at least they're rootable. There's the Galaxy Alpha as well, which is nice and small and thin, but I can't speak for development.
I'd go with the Moto X if you want something cheaper, or the Z3 Compact if you can afford to spend that much.

There was a seller on eBay that had the 32gb Verizon branded (but compatible on all GSM networks) Developer Edition for only $200, but he upped the price to $300 just a few days ago. Right before I got my tax refund(s). Another seller has them for $250.
You can improve the battery life on the Moto X by turning off the "active" and "always listening" features. Also, since it's an AMOLED display, use a dark background and any dark themes available.
The Moto X is a seriously great phone. Too much attention is focused on specs, and not enough on simple usability and ergonomics, and the Moto X 2013 is possibly the nicest Android phone to hold, use, and carry in the pocket. I want one so badly, but I just can't justify buying one, since my own Nexus 4 is still going strong.

I don't think I've seen a single complaint about the performance of the Moto X 2013. It's certainly not impressive on paper, but whatever they did with their "X8" processor definitely works. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Moto X (2014) vs Moto X Play & Style

So we've seen the hands-on videos, we've seen the specs and we've seen the release dates. We're psyched. We don't know yet if we need to choose one from the 2015 line-up or stick to what we have already/upgrade to a Moto X (2014).
It's time to discuss with fellow possessors of the Moto X line what Motorola did good in your opinion and what it did bad this year around with the Play and Style.
Personally I'm much more attracted to the Play rather than the Style but is the 615 processor much of a downgrade? It's tagged as a mid-spec phone but it's not in my eyes, and most of you can surely agree.
Camera quality has been addressed (hopefully).
Play has a whooping 3630 mah battery, so it feels like a midder-speced Droid Turbo. It even has the same weight (169 grams).
Higher screen size, higher screen to body ratio. Hopefully this won't me such a big issue as I believe Motorola made them STILL with the ergonomics in mind.
How will the build quality be? The Play version doesn't seem to resemble the X (2014) as much as the Style does in terms of aesthetics and build quality.
So...fellow citizens: Upsides, Downsides? Discuss.
I too am most interested in the Play but can't really put my finger on where the 615 stands.
I play a few, graphically not to high end games (Blek, Candy Crush,...) and have currently a Huawei P8.
If I knew the 615 performs good enough for daily stuff (maybe on par with the Nexus 5?) I'd definitely try it out...

I'm in the same boat as you. I feel the 615 should be more than enough as far as performance goes for running the browser, Google Inbox, etc. I'm not much of a mobile gamer, only really play some of the lighter games included in the last few humble bundles such as Ridiculous Fishing and Threes!.
I'm waiting on some early reviews to come in, but I really do hope that this will be the perfect phone for our use cases.
same here ... not worried about the SD 615 tho but more about build quality since i love my moto X and it's amoled display, i can live without amoled but not without a decent build quality..
the battery and the camera are huge improvents for sure that's why i'm thinking of buying one X Play ^^
I'm fairly sure the Verizon version (Turbo 2 name has already been registered) will be the one to get. It will likely be like the Play, but better cpu, wireless charging, likely qhd screen.
Only downsides are it will be a Verizon exclusive, and no unlocked bootloader.
I was reading somewhere that Motorola might want to make the X Play as the EU "version" of Droid Turbo.
lol
I will get the Moto X Play when released looks very decent! Would have been better if it had Wifi AC (Just installed a Netgear R7000 at home) but it will suffice for my needs. Will sell my Galaxy S6 before purchase. Have been looking towards chinaphones as well LEtv Le 1, Meizu Mx5 and the newly announced Sony M5 also still can't make a definitive decision can anyone help/point me in a good direction.
I mainly use the rear cam would love decent low light pics, browsing, feedly, youtube and some gaming, with minimal call and whatsapp.

Here are some benchmarks for the Snapdragon 615, looks like a very capable SOC.

You're selling your S6 to get a Motorola? I feel like that might be a downgrade...
Why?
Stock Android, better battery life, no freakin hardware button, 5,5"... That are all positive aspects I could see for him...

And best of all no shizwiz, jokes apart i had a Moto G gen 1 (2y ago) and really liked it, with a stock mid range system the experience is smoother, unlike the top end hardware of the S6 that works so hard and feels sluggish
That's what 99% of the manufactorers don't get and stick to there UIs, which are all much to heavy on the hardware...
I need a new phone for my girlfriend. She had a moto g 2013, and I want to buy the moto x play..but..in Spain it costs 395 euros. I think it´s a little expensive for a midrange. So i´m considering the new xiaomi redmi note 2 with the mediatek helio x10 and only 140 euros, what do you think guys? I don´t know what to do.
What about the new moto g?

thanx:good:
The two things the play has that i like over the style are the 1080p screen and much larger battery . Those 2 combined will probably kill the style on battery life.
Dont like:
Smaller screen
No dual speakers mono only
Its not as visually appealing
Mid range processor
2gb only of ram
The small screen and lack of stereo speakers are deal breakers for me. The other stuff i could probably live with.
sent from my Nexus 6 or Note 4

thanks for that! for my scenarios, the SD615 will do just fine (web browsing, social media, taking photos/editing, call/sms). can't wait for it to arrive, just (pre)ordered it yesterday on a german site
What I really find puzzling is the LCD screen. Why throw away the advantage of amoled in handling the active display? If it turns out to be well thought about (e.g. a mode in which the screen only turns on upon sensor activity instead of being continuously lit to display notifications) I'll be buying the play.

Note 3 vs Moto X Pure

Just got the Motorola Moto X Pure. Anyone have any comparison questions for me before I sell the Note 3?

playing with Moto isn't as easy as Samsung.
But if you're going for Moto's pure Android, I'll say Yes.
If you have plans to install CM, I'll say No. any hardware can run it and you'll lose Moto X's unique features :silly:

I'm on Verizon. The Moto X Pure is a freaking gift for me since yes, I like CM style ROM's and can finally install them on a very nice phone due to the unlocked bootloader.
But the purpose of this thread is for people to ask direct comparison questions.
Like which phone is louder, which is lighter, which is brighter, etc. etc.
How long does the moto x last battery wise compared to the note 3?
Which screen is usable in daylight?
Do you miss the IR or the s-pen?
Does it feel faster than the note 3?
I think n3 is better than

Sorry, just saw this.
The battery lasts about the same as the Note 3.
Not quite as long as the Note 4 though.
But it's apparent to me that the software isn't fine tuned for the hardware enough yet. So battery life will probably continue to get better on the Moto X Pure.
The MXP screen is actually more useable to me in direct sunlight than the Note 3. Direct view is about the same but if you angle the view a bit, the MXP is much easier to read.
I've never once used the S-Pen on the Note 3 or Note 4 so I don't miss it.
Always thought I'd use the IR on one device or another but never got around to it. So, yeah now that you mention it I miss it if the MXP doesn't have it. I'm sure I'd have found a use for it someday.
I don't play games so I can't comment on game performance. Bur even with a much lower clock speed, the MXP is much more responsive when opening apps or doing Internet surfing on my phone. Now that I'm no longer using a Samsung device, I finally understand the complains about "lag". Because the MXP just does stuff without hesitation.
I do miss having a removable battery and physical/capacitive navigation buttons.
