Why does the ROM version I'm flashing over matter? - Xiaomi Mi 4i

Hi,
I'm referring to, for instance, this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-4i/development/rom-cyanogenmod-12-1-t3212636 where it is advised to upgrade to a certain stock ROM before I flash the new ROM.
My impression was that the new ROM overwrites everything, so why would it matter what my old ROM version was?
Can someone please point me in the right direction before I mess around?
Thanks and kind regards,
Esuhi

Well, in newer versions of MIUI has newer kernel sources and device codes that isn't yet available to us... The only one available are the 5.6.11 versions of MIUI code, flashing a rom over newer MIUI versions is highly not recommended as it could lead to bootloops...

that makes complete sense, thanks!
Official web site doesn't seem to offer 5.6.11 anymore, however.

Should I resort to images found on the forums?
Or should I go with a ROM that doesn't mention this issue?
omerjerk for instance doesn't discuss this for CM12.1 stable ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63031048&postcount=3
(OP had wrong link; here's an example of a ROM w/ this issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-4i/development/rom-resurrection-remix5-5-5-t3196222 )

You can find a mirror for miui 5.6.11 fastboot rom here:

1. A ROM is the firmware, or Operating Sytem, of your phone. It's a package that contains the OS, drivers, programs and other odds and clods that make your phone work!
2. A baseband is a special package (kind of like a ROM) that controls the radios in your phone (cellular radio [phone part], bluetooth, WiFi etc.)
3. A build number is the version of the Operating System you are installing. Every manufacturer uses different naming systems for their builds, but usually the higher the letters/numbers, the newer the build. A new build will often contain a new baseband, and a new kernel. If you're lucky, you can sometimes even get a new OS version (as you did)!
Hope this helps!
pudding no root?
ok guys/girls I have been looking on here for a week and a half now but I flashed pudding and im unlocked as well but no root access obviously something i am not doing right. I thought pudding would give root but maybe not? I also have tried booting in recov. but then I can't find anything in there that says root or whatever.
I have the superuser app. dosent work as well as tita. says not rooted? It also says that a newer version is released and that it was put on my sd card but can't find it?
Any help is welcome or just point me to the right thread.
No dummie responses as they are a waste of your intellectual ability when you could have just used that energy to respond with help.

[Q] Best firmware for SGS

Hi,
I was using SGS I 9000 and with the official 2.3.3 DDJV6 version which is very very slow. After that i have tried so many leaked firmwares but unfortunately none of them works well for me..none of them are stable & bugfree.
Right now i am using DDJV9 with voodoo lagfix. This is also not running effeciently..phone gots very very hot upto 55C.
Kindly help me reviving my sgs experince. Please kindly also share the link also for the same.
Thanks alot in advance.
No roms not even OEM roms are free of bugs mate, try flashing some other custom roms until u find the one that suits ur needs.
I agree none of them is bug free. But Whichever leaked firmware i have used is not not even stable. I just want stable & fast firmware.
People kindly help.

No one will be able to tell you what will run well on your device with your set up. Try roms out till you rind one that works for you. Each device is different and so are the way we use them.

Thanks..
Right now i am little confused. Till now i have only checked the different firmwares not tried any ROM.
Are firmware and ROM are 2 different things or same? Sorry if it is too basic..
Firmware and ROM are sort of intertwined. The firmware mostly relates to the underlying infrastructure that the ROM depends upon. Things like the kernel and radio. The ROM is the actual implementation of the OS. When you flash new firmware, you also get a new ROM along with it.
Some custom ROMs, such as Darky's ROM, are very closely related to the stock ROM, and have mostly performance and cosmetic changes. Other ROMs such as Mintberry MIUI and Onecosmic are quite significantly different from any of the stock ROMs.
They also depend on particular parts of the stock firmware. Onecosmic and MIUI both require gingerbread bootloaders to have been previously installed from a stock firmware package.
If you want my two cents on what to use, I am currently using Onecosmic RC2.11 (waiting for the phone to charge to full, then going to install RC3) and it is excellent. It is based on Ice Cream Sandwich, it runs quickly, and it looks beautiful.
There is a link to the XDA thread here.

What is the reason for the cyanogenmod 13 not working on the newer build numbers?

Is there any method we can change the build number on the cm13 zip file we download to be able to install it on a newer version?
or is there any method for us to build the cyanogenmod 13 rom on our own(since everything is available)? It should help many people. Also if possible I would like to build an aosp rom for our devices. I have another stupid question, please bear with me. Someone has created the cyanogenmod rom for us and it is official, but they did not make any posts in the xda forums .
Im curious about some of this stuff, too. Especially the reason why you can't flash on the newer firmware, and why no CM thread.

Its has been months but still thier is no custom rom for aur device can anyone tell me why plz thanks in advance
It isn't a popular devices, hence less development. You're more than welcome to learn how to make a ROM and give it a go.

There are two at the moment, how could you miss them?
If you like testing and playing with a rom, there is an AOSP version, however, not final and has some bugs.
Otherwise there is one other custom rom based on stock Oreo. I recommend this one as it's the closest one to stock only being de-bloated, pre rooted and also has TWRP custom recovery, ready to use.

Flashing firmware questions

Hey everyone, apologies if this has been asked before.
I recently flashed the Pixel Experience custom rom and for the most part I'm loving it.
One of the reasons I chose this rom over something like Lineage OS is that Lineage requires the flashing of firmware before flashing the custom rom. PE didn't require this so I went with that.
My question is what firmware do I need exactly? If I do decide to try out other roms in future where do I get this file? I looked online and found the full MIUI rom which is about 2.5 gb and I also found just the updates which is about 80mb. There's obviously a huge size difference here and I want to avoid issues in future
Search for Xiaomi Firmware Updater here on XDA. A member wrote a script which creates links for the latest firmwares (approx. 70 MB).
Thank you, I think I got confused. I wasn't sure whether I need the firmware or the full MIUI, glad it's the smaller file.
