[Completed] Living with cheap smartwatches. My life with a Hi Watch U8 Pro and a DZ09. - XDA Assist

I've worn my Hi Watch off and on for over a year now.
I has served me well considering how little it cost. I've managed to use most of the features and the battery is still going.
So why did I buy a DZ09? Partly out of desperation. The Hi Watch has a deeply recessed usb charge port. The Micro USB supplied is slightly longer than any other I own. It is the only cable that will work and when it inevitably goes missing I am watch-less until it resurfaces. The DZ09 was cheap, it was shiny and there was a slim chance the charger cable would fit the Hi Watch.
Guess what... it doesn't.
But that's OK, the old cable turned up again and now I can use both and compare them to my hearts content.
If anyone has any questions, I will try to answer them. I will also include the odd mini revue of different functions and any apps I encounter along the way.
Hopefully it will be of interest to someone, so here goes...

A note about straps.
I've never changed the straps on these watches. However, the Hi Watch (U8 Pro) will probably change fine. It has tiny hex bolts holding the strap on which are clearly visible.
The DZ09 is another story.
Upon inspection I discovered that the the strap is hollow. A wire (presumably an antenna) is tucked inside. So my plans to buy a funky two tone strap may have to go on hold.

The DZ09 has much jazzier screen layouts and a choice of backgrounds.
The metal bits on the DZ09 appear to be actual cheap metal as opposed to the painted plastic of the Hi Watch.

Hi,
I see you've used the "other smartwatches" section alrwadt, which is where this could be posted.
Xda Assist is here to help navigate the site, not for support or info. So you won't get replies here.

Magnets and Pocket PC's?

2 Questions
Would a big magnet stick to the bottom of the i-mate 7150?
Would a magnet sticking to this cause any progrems for the pocket pc?
I have an idea for my car but first need to find out if this would be okay...
The HTC Athena has a large magnet in it (and a hard drive) but it works well with no ill effects, the largest problem with a powerfull magnet is when you put the PDA in your pocket, it can wipe out the magnetic strips on credit/ bank cards etc - I have a number of swipe cards that no longer work since getting my Athena!!! - Mike
hmm alright.. i have an idea that i was thinking about..
For any of you not familiar with the Acura Integra, on the dash board, it has a decling indent to show the clock..
now i was wondering.. i would like to but a large magnet under the dashboard before the clock so then i could open up the i-mate 7150 and place in the indentation and not have it sliding around and be held firmly.. i know this may be kind of confusing but for anyone who understand do you see any reason why this cant be done?
here is a picture of the dash board

No reason you couldn't try it - one word of caution though if the car is equipped with air bags take care when working behind the dash - set one off and it would probably put you in hospital.
Check out Brodit for a holder and Pro Clip for the device though, they offer a profersional and safe mount for most devices and cars - a magnet probably won't hold the device in the event of an impact, a heavy phone/ PDA flying around the cabin could cause serious injury - Mike
Ever think of trying something like this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Clear-Sticky-Ma...ryZ35193QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Target/KMart stores sell smaller versions that would prabally be better.
BTW... i always thought magnets mess with the landscape function in the phone..

The DIY thread

Hi
I don't know if this exists anywhere, but I liked the idea and wanted to share it with you.
It's no secret the iphone has many accessories (due to a very good, gotta admit, human engineering)
and android devices and our phone in particular (as well as its international brother - the i9000) have very little accessories,
though they have their respectable market share.
SGS 4G, being an obsolete, yet very fun phone to have, we might just need to pick up the glove and make the accessories the manufacturers fail to supply us.
I aim to making this thread an accessories user to public thread - whether it's a suggestion/idea
or a complete "how to" (including a list of items to buy, a scheme and instructions on how to build ).
To kick off :
An example - LEGO dock station
First idea - making your own flash LED addon (current project seems to fail).
See posts 1 & 5. I will try to make one myself and send complete instructions.
Second idea - making your horn speaker amplifier.
It exists only for iphone.
Thinking of making the mold of epoxy and then make it with white silicone (RTV).
Haven't started working on it yet.
Feel free to share your great ideas.
They made a bullet proof case for the iPhone 4/4S... Why do you need a bullet proof case for a phone? The front doesn't look protected too! The non-sense these people make.
Well that guy is insane, he also shot an unprotected SGS 3...
Back on topic, I see we barely have handymen here

I totally like the flash idea. I might have to try it

* Back replacement - Dealextreme 3.9$
* 50 Mini Push Buttons Momentary Connectors, Switches - eBay - 3.5$
Once succeeding I will publish full schematics.

[Q] Found an unregistered iPad 4 / 64GB / Wi-Fi in a skip!

Yeah, as unbelievable as it sounds it's quite true. My friend saw a table in a skip outside a charity shop the other day that she thought she would take and restore. When she took it out she noticed something heavy wrapped in newspaper and several old Samsung (D400 type) mobile phones in the skip.
When she unwrapped an iPad she brought it to me to examine. It has a white front and a silver back with model: A1458 written on it. I couldn't turn it on as the battery is dead which is indicated by the battery symbol that appears on the LCD when the power button is pushed.
The charge / USB socket looks to be the new iPhone 5 socket for which I do not have a cable for at present so I was unable to tell what spec it was.
I tried to register it with Apple but when it asked for date of purchase (I made one up of about a week old) the website asked me to provide proof of purchase information and would not show me any details about it.
I found another site that claimed to I.D it by it's serial number and I took a picture of it (attached).
So tomorrow I will get a lead and see if any owner info is on it and if so contact them to find out what they did with it. However I have a feeling this is not going to be registered to anyone (if it powers up).
My friend just wants to sell it.
Can anyone give me some advice on the best course of action? I really don't want to just hand it in to the filth so some copper can give it to his brat in 6 months!
Cheers
Phill.

I highly doubt someone just discarded an iPad 4...do the right thing and take it to an Apple store and have them track down the rightful owner...if the owner can't be contacted or did, in fact, discard it...then have fun selling it or keeping it.

What tools do I need to replace the screen on HTC Shift?

Will I need different shaped screwdrivers or will a regular (small sized) Phillips & or flat head screwdrivers be all I need?
While I was looking for screens on eBay and Amazon I saw some that came with tools. One of the screwdrivers that came with one of the screens looks like a star so now I'm wondering if there are any star shaped screws holding the screen down that'll need a star shaped screwdriver to open it with.

I hope replacing this screen doesn't end up becoming a huge pain. Will I be okay buying just a screen for $5 or should I pay almost 3 times as much to get the tools?
This is the screen I was originally looking at for $5.55 http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=110787423167
Thanks for your suggestions!
When I got a new flex cable it came with the tools needed. BUT I found that a screwdriver I bought from radio Shack had better fitting tips. I'll try to find a link later today if I can.
Edit: I think what I'm referring to is called; RadioShack® 21-Piece Precision Electronic Driver SetCatalog #: 64-185 *|* Model: 6400185 for $17.49
This should be in Q/A. But that being said. I would spring for the kit that comes with the Tools. Especially if you do not have the correct tools. Yes you are going to need the Star shaped Screwdriver. Not for the Screen itself, but to be able to get to it. Also a few other suggestions. One make sure you watch the Video linked in THIS thread on how to disassemble the Shift. That thread also has pics you should study a bit. Another thing that I cannot stress enough. HAVE A CLEAN WORK AREA TO DO THE REPAIR. It will save you a bunch of headaches. Take your time. Do not try to rush the procedure. Lastly, make sure that the work surface, and you are properly grounded. This will avoid any issues from static discharge. Read, and take your time. It will save you grief later on .

Charging stand/dock?

I'm looking for a plain charging stand or dock for the Galaxy Tab S, but I can't seem to find one. Does anyone know of such an accessory (could be Samsung or 3rd-party, either specific to the Galaxy Tab S or even generic)?
I've had probably 8 tablets by now and used this stand with all of them.

I just found the following dock (which charges) on Amazon. I assume that since it is "universal", it will work with the Galaxy Tab S. Any reason why it shouldn't?
EDD-D100BEGXAR
Sorry, I can't post URLs yet because I'm new here and XDA won't let me. Simple search for the above model number will yield links to it.
False, that was for the old Galaxy Tab with a 30 pin connector, you need one with USB connector, like this:

i recommend a Quirky Converge Universal USB Docking Station
I haven't yet tried it but I think this KIDIGI Dock would be better than Samsung's Universal Dock because the back rest sticks up higher; better for portrait tablets, less wobble when you tap the screen.
http://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-desktop-dock
-This mob have it as sold out but I bet you can find it elsewhere!
Cheers
I just scored a tab s to replace my dear ancient playbook which replaced my dear ancient Touchpad. Blackberry and HP got so many things right including their just plain perfect docks that let you sleepily/lazily/distractedly/drunkenly slide the tablet into place perfectly every time leaving it always charged. Losing those amazing docks is one of the main things that's kept me from upgrading, any new docks out there that people are loving?
In a perfect world there would be one where the usb nub pops into place when the tablet's lined up... Or a good case with a qi adapter.
Checked & in Stock now.
