The DIY thread - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi
I don't know if this exists anywhere, but I liked the idea and wanted to share it with you.
It's no secret the iphone has many accessories (due to a very good, gotta admit, human engineering)
and android devices and our phone in particular (as well as its international brother - the i9000) have very little accessories,
though they have their respectable market share.
SGS 4G, being an obsolete, yet very fun phone to have, we might just need to pick up the glove and make the accessories the manufacturers fail to supply us.
I aim to making this thread an accessories user to public thread - whether it's a suggestion/idea
or a complete "how to" (including a list of items to buy, a scheme and instructions on how to build ).
To kick off :
An example - LEGO dock station
First idea - making your own flash LED addon (current project seems to fail).
See posts 1 & 5. I will try to make one myself and send complete instructions.
Second idea - making your horn speaker amplifier.
It exists only for iphone.
Thinking of making the mold of epoxy and then make it with white silicone (RTV).
Haven't started working on it yet.
Feel free to share your great ideas.

They made a bullet proof case for the iPhone 4/4S... Why do you need a bullet proof case for a phone? The front doesn't look protected too! The non-sense these people make.

Well that guy is insane, he also shot an unprotected SGS 3...
Back on topic, I see we barely have handymen here

I totally like the flash idea. I might have to try it

VIDEO: Form-fitting black Silicon Case for HTC Desire - $10 - Amzer

Overall this is really great. I ordered it the day after I got my Desire, but it took 2 weeks just for it to get into production, and then another week to ship. It comes in a bunch of colors; I chose black. The fit is perfect, and all the buttons and holes line up just right. My only complaint is that I wish it were just a bit more stretchy-snug -- It's snug, but I'd like for it to have been more snug
.
ALSO:
It did not come with a carry strap, nor anchor point for one, but I made one myself and now it is secure in my hands everywhere I go. Mission accomplished. I will add pictures of that later tonight.
.
What are the white things stuck on the back of the phone?

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that.... They have nothing to do with the silicone case... They are separate stick ons called "egrips" -- which you can apply to any device and it creates a friction that prevents stuff from sliding out of your hand.

Prior to getting the silicone case in the mail, I needed to give myself some peace of mind to not let the Desire slip out of my hand. egrips are great... They makes them as strips you can apply where you like -- and they also make they as custom fits for an entire back of a phone...
I care a lot about aestehtics -- but I do not care about the back of my phone. I rank "NOT DROPPING MY PHONE" much much higher than "neat and tidy back side".
But, for the record, the egrips work great on the Desire back surface itself... But when I then applied them to the back of the silicon case, they don't adhere.
So, what do you think of the case?
Great video, thanks for the great review!
I wish everyone would review the products they bought the same way, with clean and alot of photos, detailed ones

FREE phone skin from Marlboro and Skinit.com

Like the title says, get a free phone skin from Marlboro and skinit.com.
1. Scan qr code in picture below
2. Set up account
3. Create a brand
4. Get it shipped
Says it could 8-10 weeks for delivery, but I just ordered mine on 23OCT and received it in the mail 01NOV. Limited to folks 21 and older and they do ask for SS# for age and identification verification so there is that catch. Other than that, no strings attached. Figure if you're a nonsmoker you can just make up some stuff when you create the account for brand preference and such. I also included pics of mine. If you decide to get one come back and post pics.
It does limit you to 2 characters on the brand and as hindsight is always 20/20, I realized I could've done my favorite college or university as opposed to the initials of my name.

Pics are pretty small, and appear to be screen shots of pictures, but they worked. From looks pretty cool, but they ask for way too much info to feel comfortable IMO. Cool find though.
i already am on the marlboro mailing lists and get several freebies a year, so theyve already gotten my info. that being said, i ordered this a few weeks ago also. im not one for phone skins so i had it made to fit an iphone 3gs for my dad. quality is soso. just a typical skinit skin. not bad for free.
Not many skins to choose from, but hell its free, I got the one that looked like chrome for the toolboxes on the back of truck... the brand thing is pretty cool too, makes it unique. 15 bucks saved.
How strange
Thanks for the post, I don't see why you need to be 21+ when you're legally allowed to smoke at 18. Lol. I'm not the one giving away free skins, so i guess it's on them.
Give them social security for a free identify theft for them and get a free skin? HMMM....

[Q] Found an unregistered iPad 4 / 64GB / Wi-Fi in a skip!

Yeah, as unbelievable as it sounds it's quite true. My friend saw a table in a skip outside a charity shop the other day that she thought she would take and restore. When she took it out she noticed something heavy wrapped in newspaper and several old Samsung (D400 type) mobile phones in the skip.
When she unwrapped an iPad she brought it to me to examine. It has a white front and a silver back with model: A1458 written on it. I couldn't turn it on as the battery is dead which is indicated by the battery symbol that appears on the LCD when the power button is pushed.
The charge / USB socket looks to be the new iPhone 5 socket for which I do not have a cable for at present so I was unable to tell what spec it was.
I tried to register it with Apple but when it asked for date of purchase (I made one up of about a week old) the website asked me to provide proof of purchase information and would not show me any details about it.
I found another site that claimed to I.D it by it's serial number and I took a picture of it (attached).
So tomorrow I will get a lead and see if any owner info is on it and if so contact them to find out what they did with it. However I have a feeling this is not going to be registered to anyone (if it powers up).
My friend just wants to sell it.
Can anyone give me some advice on the best course of action? I really don't want to just hand it in to the filth so some copper can give it to his brat in 6 months!
Cheers
Phill.

I highly doubt someone just discarded an iPad 4...do the right thing and take it to an Apple store and have them track down the rightful owner...if the owner can't be contacted or did, in fact, discard it...then have fun selling it or keeping it.

What tools do I need to replace the screen on HTC Shift?

Will I need different shaped screwdrivers or will a regular (small sized) Phillips & or flat head screwdrivers be all I need?
While I was looking for screens on eBay and Amazon I saw some that came with tools. One of the screwdrivers that came with one of the screens looks like a star so now I'm wondering if there are any star shaped screws holding the screen down that'll need a star shaped screwdriver to open it with.

I hope replacing this screen doesn't end up becoming a huge pain. Will I be okay buying just a screen for $5 or should I pay almost 3 times as much to get the tools?
This is the screen I was originally looking at for $5.55 http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=110787423167
Thanks for your suggestions!
When I got a new flex cable it came with the tools needed. BUT I found that a screwdriver I bought from radio Shack had better fitting tips. I'll try to find a link later today if I can.
Edit: I think what I'm referring to is called; RadioShack® 21-Piece Precision Electronic Driver SetCatalog #: 64-185 *|* Model: 6400185 for $17.49
This should be in Q/A. But that being said. I would spring for the kit that comes with the Tools. Especially if you do not have the correct tools. Yes you are going to need the Star shaped Screwdriver. Not for the Screen itself, but to be able to get to it. Also a few other suggestions. One make sure you watch the Video linked in THIS thread on how to disassemble the Shift. That thread also has pics you should study a bit. Another thing that I cannot stress enough. HAVE A CLEAN WORK AREA TO DO THE REPAIR. It will save you a bunch of headaches. Take your time. Do not try to rush the procedure. Lastly, make sure that the work surface, and you are properly grounded. This will avoid any issues from static discharge. Read, and take your time. It will save you grief later on .

Suit UP! A brief review of the HTC Dot View case

The HTC Dot View case looks like just another case, but it comes with a cool trick. The plastic backing offers some protection for the back and corners, but not enough to feel comfortable doing a drop test. The thing that really impresses me is the front cover that interacts with the screen. Unlike other cases with screen covers that interact with the display of the phone this case does not have a plastic window. Instead it has a hundreds of dots giving you a very 8-bit look.

The pictures above shows what my case displays when you tap on it twice.
Outside of the clock shown above the display also has a few other functionalities. Some of those include weather / temperature graphics, picture personalization, call and text message notifications. You are also able to pick up calls using a quick gesture. The ability to place calls can be done using HTC voice recognition software or by selecting one of your three previous calls.
Overall this case is a really great complement to this great device. Every time I pull it out of my pocket it still impresses everyone I show it to and still even me. Thanks for taking a moment to read my blog. If you have had a chance to check it out let me know what you thought of it or if you have any questions let me know.
