Problems after Lollipop update (Help needed) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Ever since I updated to Lollipop especially after the recent update to 5.1.1, everything is screwed up.
The google camera doesn't work so I had to uninstall it to atleast get the phone's camera working. Flashlight turns off after a while.
I'm not receiving calls as those who call get the message that my phone is switched off even though my phone is in my hands SWITCHED ON.
What the hell should I do? Its pissing me off.

I just updated to LMY48B and the camera is laggy as hell -- pretty much unusable. I don;t know what to tell you except maybe try another camera app? I'm still looking for something myself. I use my camera constantly and this has made it worthless. Almost cause for rolling back to KitKat.

Those are uncommon issues. I suggest you to start from scratch by flashing the factory images.
Camera MX is a nice alternative app.

My install was a clean factory image. No idea what the issue is.

Does your camera freeze up?

i need to know if this a hardware issue or software. every 2 days or so my camera wont start . i close everything running and it just freezes up on me. i have nothing crazy installed jsut root, tibu, chase, android game, flashlight. thats it ! i will click the camera icon ill see the screen shake for a second and just go back to home screenl. also sometimes i click the multi task button and clear everything out when i press home it has to load all my widgets again.. this phone is werid...
i bought it online at radioshak for 50 bucks do you guys think i can get a new one in store or do they deal with online only
I had this happen to me twice in a week of use. I'm wondering if another app is not releasing the camera from it's use. I haven't been killing the camera app after use, so maybe it has an issue being open for long.
Other apps that use the camera I may have had open are Instagram, Facebook, Gallery.

same. its either gallery or instagram, hmmm
i had this issue since i bought the phone. never figured it out. a couple of days ago, the camera just stopped working altogether. it won't start most of the time. when it does start, the image is dark and very distorted. i tried to upgrade from 1.73 to 1.85 and didnt solve the issue. i did a factory reset and it didn't solve the issue. so earlier today, i ended up just exchanging it with a new phone.
Happening to me as we speak!
Made a quick, nasally sounding video.

- Instagram is still able to use the camera.
- If I close them all in multitasking, it doesn't fix it.
- Force stopping Instagram and/or the Camera app doesn't solve it, I have to reboot the phone.
EDIT:
Fast boot is off on my device.

damn so you think it is hardware related ? i bought the phone may 9th it arrived to my house , am i still under warrenty or what is radioshak 30 days hmm
Happens to mine too, about 4 times already. Have to restart the phone to get it to work again. Had the phone for about a month. If the update fixes this and other problems this phone will be perfect.

Try a factory reset. If this doesn't solve the issue, I'd take it back. I've never had any such issues on 1.73, 1.82 or 1.85. I'm inclined to think its either a software issue (like an installed app interfering, as one reply suggested) that a factory reset may clear up, or its a hardware issue.

well, i won't say that your problem was the same as mine but i think mine was definitely a hardware problem. i experienced the problem on 1.73 and 1.85, rooted and unrooted, locked and unlocked, and even after a factory reset. luckily the camera just complete crapped out before my 30-day was up so it was easy to justify the exchange at the at&t store.

Video exactly depicts what happens to me. I will try to open the camera app and it just flashes and kicks me out. I've tried all sorts of things to alleviate the problem but the only solution I've found is restarting the phone. Pretty annoying....
The display HOX at the AT&T store had the same issue. I'm assuming this is software related but who knows
this happened the first week I had the phone. When I updated it to 1.82 the issue went away so I'm assuming it was software

Well if it was a software issue, factory reset is worth a try. However if its something that needs to be fixed in a future update (a bug) then going back to factory shouldn't help. And thats why the OP had another thread about how to update.
Crizthakidd, have you tried other camera apps from google play? I know you said you were going to. How did that go, if you did? Obviously if there's a software issue, even if factory reset doesn't fix it, xda can. That is, root, unlock, install a newer custom rom.
I had this problem on 1.72, and other apps were still ok using the camera. I made a quick video of it happening.

***Ever since the 1.85 OTA it hasn't been happening so I would suggest HTC fixed it. ***
However I am rooted and doing mods so I am restarting more often to check my work.

Moto G - Unfortunately Camera has stopped

Running stock Moto G 4.4.2 ATM, and updated to 174.44.1 yesterday, unlocked and rooted using TWRP v2.6.3.0. Very occasionally, when I want to use the camera I get the message "Unfortunately Camera has stopped" and I get a blank screen. I can exit the camera app and occasionally it will work if I force stop the camera app and try it again. I have also tried other camera apps, but get the same results. I suspect that they all using the same Android api or something. The surefire way to get it working is to reboot the phone.
I have tried fixing permissions, wiping cache, dalvic, wiping camera app cache etc. Perhaps I have a physical camera problem? As I see zero reports of Moto G camera problems in this forum.
Any suggestions?

Hhhhmmm, bought mine in Belgium so it's a EU model. I did happen to install the stock camera app (from a nexus) a while ago, but deletet it a few days after that. Maybe it's because of that?
Well so far after doing the factory reset and re installing my apps the camera seems to be behaving. I too use a KK camera from the play store, only because it keeps things the same as on my other devices. Yesterday I found another thread reporting the same camera issues. We should join that thread. PS. We have a home in Holland although live 6 mnths in Mexico, so we are almost neighbors...

Just to let you know. Two days on and I have been working the camera app, quite a bit. It seems fine now. As mentioned I did a full factory reset and then installed everything back one by one. I didn't use Titanium or anything. So it was a bit of a pain, But the result seems to be a complete cure. :fingers-crossed:

The fact that you have a house in the Netherlands is quite cool!
And any idea why it behaves like that if you don't reset? Is it still working?
Yes four days now and the camera is stable. I try it regularly just to be sure. By factory reset, I mean factory fresh. Where the phone asks language, gmail account etc. Then I installed all my apps fresh from the play store. It took a while, but the result seems like it is worth it. Finally used TWRP to create a backup.

Ok, I will try this tomorrow and I'll report here wether it works or not.
GB version, same problem.
Rebotting saved my day.
Same problem here on the Indian version. Reboot makes it alright. anyone who knows why this is happening? Hope to get a fix soon.
Have 2 Moto G's and this problem occurs on both.
Camera fix
Ok so I've been testing the camera for 3 days now and it works just perfect. The only fix (for now) seems to be resetting the phone. You can find this under settings - Back-up and reset (don't know how this menu is called in English, as my phone is in Dutch).
Be aware, it WILL erase everything so make sure to back things up.
@GregoryDelaey Hi, I am pleased to hear that the effort resulted in a good outcome for you. I was convinced that my phone had a hardware camera problem. But its now 10 days and the camera so far is faultless. Yesterday I tried some other camera apps to see if I could improve the camera. One called Snap Camera did seem to give marginally better results. But in the end I decided to stay with the Kitkat version. It doesn't have HDR but I decided that I could achieve the same thing by photo editing on my PC.

Camera Update
Ok, so the last few days I got the error again. It appears when I start the camera app, then it crashes and after that I can start the app again and start taking pictures.
But today, an update for the camera was released on the play story, it says it has several bug fixes + support for android 4.4.2. I think this might be the update we were waiting for. I'll test it this weekend to see if it is.

I have camera issues as well, running CM11 on my European Moto G. I only noticed it when I actually tried to take a picture, the camera app would crash then. My wife has a stock Moto G and told me about a camera update yesterday, but she wasn't sure where it came from, only that she did not have to reboot. I was wondering whether I would have to flash a new radio to get this fix, but now that I know that it apparently came from the Play Store I'm not sure what to do atm .
Rebooting does help by the way.

Yes the new update comes from the play store and it's from Motorola themselves. They updated the camera app to be compatible with Android 4.4.2. so that means it won't crash anymore (at least for me it doesn't). Can't help you with your camera issue though, seeing that you're on a custom rom.

Issues after 4.4.3 update

Hello guys
I just finished updating my rooted Nexus 5 to 4.4.3 and it went fine but I immidiately noticed some "problems" when I turned it on. The thing is that my touch screen is not as responsive as before 4.4.3 update. On 4.4.2 scrolling was flowy and smooth like on ice, but on 4.4.3 I got big delay (half cm of emptiness) on scrolling through gesture (apps, home or anything..) and, even worse, when I'm scrolling down my Contacts list it dials randomly due to a lagging. Is there any calibration to be done or that's it?

It doesn't sound normal. Mine is working just as smooth as it was on 4.4.2. Have you tried wiping the phone? Do a factory reset and see.

issues here
my battery went from 19% to 0 over night.... in airplane mode. previously, it would only use 3-4% overnight, esp with everything turned off. almost woke up late
also, im having a hard time answering phone calls. i slide to answer, it doesnt answer but its still ringing
I noticed that there is a bunch of different problems reported last two days and I have decided to wait for Google's response on all of this mess. But I must say that my phone is working better now and somehow it heals itself )) Maybe this update is about implementing some organic components

I'm having a lot of issues with my phone.. Seems like an sd card issue. Ant app that uses memory does not work properly... Even the camera does not load...
I'm going to do a factory reset... Any way to save all settings on stock?

I also got a big issue on 4.4.3. since the update i get sponataeuos signal dropouts especially when i travel by bus or train.
It seams the radio has problems by logging out at one cell and switch to an other cell. Also the reception/signal is very weak.
Someone noticed the same? or does anybody has a tip?
thanks in advance :good:

Go to settings > apps > locate google dialer and clear cache
For battery drain, install an app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats (it's free demo version is available on XDA) or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
Observe your device for one day after complete charge (90+) and use it.
Using that app, you'll observe the apps/wakelocks which are causing unnecessary battery drain. Eliminate them or post screenshots here so that we can help you to solve battery drain issue.

First thing to do if something is broken after an OTA is factory reset to see if it is an OS bug or whether you have incompatible data and settings.
It sounds like it would be a pain to do, but you can easily backup with helium nowadays so it needn't be

GPS not Working
Has anyone else noticed if their GPS is working or not? I was trying to use mine last night and I can see that GPS connects and it brings up the map but then never navigates or even moves from the starting point on the map. Can someone let me know if this is a new problem??? I flashed the N5_4.4.3.zip file that someone pointed me to, as I had asked for a flashable zip file to update to 4.4.3 as I still have not gotten an ota notification from T-Mobile:confused
i have a question also,
what if i like the current mono toned google dialer?
when i get this update & it updates the dialer, is it possible to un-install the dialer update to revert back to the older dialer?

[Q] Nexus 5 Camera Focus Problem

Hey, I have the Nexus 5 and I have few troubles with it lately.
Since I've updated my phone to 4.4.2 I'm having problems with focusing my camera, the phone doesn't recognize the correct focus most of the time and the result is pretty aweful images, (The camera wont focus even when i touch the screen. The focus image goes off but it only changes the brightness).
I'm pretty sure that the problem is not with the firmware because rarely, I load the camera application and it captures great again, but the next time I load it the problem returns.
When Google annouced that the next update (4.4.3) will include camera bug fix, I figured out that I'm not alone with this problem. But even after the update I still have this problem.
A few shots that I took to show the problem:

If it's still not working, Factory reset the device and start from scratch. Still having a problem? Might be a hardware issue??

Final thing I could suggest you is flashing the 4.4.3 factory images to get back to complete stock. If this doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what to suggest you anymore regarding this issue. AFAIK, after flashing the factory images, you have covered all bases from the software perspective, so it could be a hardware issue.
Hey guys just wanted to say that im the last couple days the camera magically started to take good shots again. It might be because of some silent patch or something because I didn't update anything.

theres no "silent patch". if you uninstalled any other app, they could of been affecting it. or, it couldve just been very bad lighting that you were using before. or, sometimes just rebooting, once or several times, fixes issues.

None of above. In the past 3 months I rebooted many times, and factory reseted twice in order to fix this problem. I don't really know what changed but I'm just glad that it's working again
Temp fix (not good but works for now) & suggested permanent fix
First - I take no responsibility for you trying these things. You could break your phone completely or make the problem worse.
If you have the phone under warranty and can wait the weeks to get LG to fix your phone then that is your best option.
I used my phone for work and came from a CDMA phone so I don't have a replacement phone to use if I send my in.
Short summary: My wife and I got our phones at the same time. We have the same software, modem/radio, and yet my phone will not auto focus. Her phone camera works fine.
I've restored old camera app versions, restored roms, tried different kernels, and got back to pure stock. No software fix works.
Temp fix (works for me, and indicates a hardware issue - camera or sensor or loose connection). **This could damage your phone more, completely at your own risk if you try this.
I can reproduce this fix because I have to do this anytime I start the app from a cold or extended sleep state. If I open the camera app I only get blurry focus, it tried to auto focus but never gets clear.
-While the app is open, I gentle tap the top of the phone, on the side edge of the phone, near the camera against a sold (but often cloth covered service). The gentle/solid tap does something to the camera or a sensor because then the camera focuses fine for a while.
I believe this indicates a real hardware issue of some type. As I mentioned my phone and my wife phone have identical Rom, Radio/modem, etc.
Possible permanent fix (definitely a warranty void if anyone tries this) - replace the camera.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vioySXQv5Gs
Has anyone has this auto focus issue and replaced the camera to fix it? I can't be without a phone for weeks to get it repaired by LG unless I find a temp GSM/LTE phone.
If someone takes the risk to try my tap method to temp fix the auto-focus on the camera please let me know if it works for you also.

Has anyone has this auto focus issue and replaced the camera to fix it? I can't be without a phone for weeks to get it repaired by LG unless I find a temp GSM/LTE phone.
If someone takes the risk to try my tap method to temp fix the auto-focus on the camera please let me know if it works for you also.

ive had this issue almost since ive gotten the phone last november.
request a replacement from google if you got it from google play. otherwise, manufacturer warranty may get you a replacement or repair.
The camera is the one area my old Galaxy S3 beats my Nexus 5, no contest. I've had focusing issues since I got it back in February. I've only used stock roms, and it has issues in other camera apps. There could be an object taking up 80% of the view, anywhere between a couple inches to a foot in front of it, and it will still focus on something further away.

First - I take no responsibility for you trying these things. You could break your phone completely or make the problem worse.
If you have the phone under warranty and can wait the weeks to get LG to fix your phone then that is your best option.

Hey
I change the camera and it was ok for a month or so. But now there are same focusing problems as before =(. So it might be bad hardware problems over at lg?
I have the same problem and plan to replace the camera using the method described in the video. However, is there any guarantee it will work? It would suck if the camera was not the problem, but instead some loose cable or sensor deeper inside. Any thoughts?

Camera and Flash not detected (hardware issue?)

Well I have a unique issue I can't find much info on. This is not the 5.0 lollipop bug with the camera becoming inaccessible. I'm currently running 5.0.1 factory image rooted.
The problem: My camera and Flash are not usually detected when I boot the phone. Even if I reboot. I thought this was something with the rom so I reflashed 5.0.1 cleanly, but the problem persisted.
The only time they are detected and work is if I press on the area where the flash and camera are located and tap it with something heavy. The problem is that I don't think the flash and camera are really related. I've opened the phone and they in separate areas. Could it be a motherboard issue? Anyone know about hardware stuff like this?

Yep, sounds like a HW issue
ITIt's a very common bug. Another is using voip apps like line or kakao with headphones. You can hear them but they can't hear you. Both are well documented. Changing the camera is no use. I had to move to CM. So far it's worked out I used to get a card like that but saying "unable to mount the camera"
IT IS NOT HARDWARE. YOU WILL RUIN THE PHONE DOING THAT. I THOUGHT IT WAS AT FIRST TOO. Read up on it

OK I will try flashing CM and see if that fixes the issue. If it does then I'm done with stock 5.0 for good.

Use lollipop dream. It's cm based and I love it. No fc's
Well I didn't expect it to the fix the issue and after flashing CM to rule out any stock issues the camera and flash don't work.
I guess. My question is whether or not anonymous has had this hardware issue before and if they found a fix.
