I'm rooted on B023. Download rom . Update.
Unlock, fastboot TWRP recovery , install SU via TWRP from SD card, reinstall original recovery via fastboot.
Yeah that's the problem with root, you can't do OTA except flashing the full rom again and then setting up the phone all over. With such frequent updates from Huawei I wonder how many willing to keep it up.

I would see it this way for regular updates:
- Download full ROM
- extract system.img & boot.img & flash via fastboot
or copy to sdcard & dd to partition (system is /dev/block/mmcblk0p38)
You don't need to setup the system from scratch then.
You can do full updates once a while if there are significant changes (for example major version upgrades).
If I extract the system.img and boot.img, does that includes the updated apps that huawei put in?

After update from root b021 to b023 system version not changed.
Hi all. I have some problem with update. After update from root b021 to b023 system version not changed. it's b021 and huawei app remind me update via ota to b023 every time.
How i update?
1. Download full rom (b023) from huawei site.
2. Extract system.img & boot.img files (b023) from "app" and flash them via fastboot.
3. Reboot phone.
Why version OS after update system.img & boot.img has not changed?

Hi!
This morning I updated supersu binaries via CWM, beacuse "normal" upgrade didn't work.
Now the phone is stucked with the boot logo animation.... I tried to clear the dalvik cache, but I don't understand very well what is going on...
I neither know if the un-brick procedures applies to me, because I didn't ugpraded the EMUI
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english
Follow this procedure to get your phone back to stock:
Download your phone's latest firmware and extract system.img, boot.img, recovery.img, cust.img from UPDATE.APP using Huawei Update Extractor tool.
Boot into bootloader mode by switching off the phone then pressing only the Vol DOWN button, and connecting it to PC simultaneously.
Flash recovery first, using this command.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Flash all other extracted files similarly firing these commands.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash cust cust.img
fastboot flash system system.img
After doing this put that very UPDATE.APP from which you extracted the files in dload folder of your external SDCARD.
Switch off your phone, and press Vol UP + Vol DOWN + Power button simultaneously.
Your device will now get to the full stock firmware.
NOTE: If the manual flashing doesn't works or you get any errors, then first try only the force update method, i.e Putting the UPDATE.APP from which you extracted the files in dload folder of your external SDCARD and pressing Vol UP + Vol DOWN + Power button simultaneously after switching off your phone.
Thank you.
Is there no other way to "revert" SuperSU changes?
I guess something went wrong with that. I have same problem, but I did not update SuperSU, i just installed it and choose to clear dalvik cache.

Install an older version of SuperSU, like 2.51 or 2.62.
DonĀ“t clean cache or Dalvik after install.
It might do a couple or reboots, just wait.

older SuperSU does not work. I think it iss because of Android 6.
I need some sort of boot.img patching...
I reflashed system.img from huawai extract and all fine (except of rooting...)
Okay cool. I rooted by flashing SU 2.47 and was able to update from play store. Which I don't recommend. Just root and stick to that SU version
well, rooting without working supersu.zip - flash would be great, but I dont get it with Android 6.
no Problem with Android 5.1
And I dont want to use some strange chinese tool (that does not support honor 6 plus any more).
So you got Android 6 and root with Honor 6plus?
Hi Guys,
So I got my Mate 9 (MHA-L29C636B110) today and i unlocked bootloader and rooted it so I can restore my backups using Titanium Backup.
After I flashed TWRP and rooted, the updater in settings shows new update available, so i tried to download the OTA (MHA-L29C636B136) and update it.
But it can't be updated maybe due to TWRP installed, so I tried the following:
1) Flash stock recovery through fastboot from B136 update.app (Failed to update as well)
2) Unroot with SuperSU (Failed as well)
3) Flash boot.img, recovery.img, system.img from B136 (Failed as well)
But now the phone reboots everytime I type my PIN to unlock phone. I still can drag notification bar, and access to torch light function on lockscreen etc.
I have full zip and OTA zip update.app extracted. But I'm not sure what is my next step.
Anyone able to advise how to revert back to B110 or update manually to B136?
Thanks in advance!!!

Also, I tried to flash the Full zip and OTA zip file with TWRP before I start trying to flash the img files seperately, they don't work...
To boot to twrp you have to hold vol up + power and release power when you see the logo while keeping volume up pressed.

Flashing stock B136 with FunkyHuawei might be your best bet. Assuming funkyhuawei stays alive, this phone is pretty much un-brickable.

I can only boot to TWRP for now, stuck in splash screen loop if boot normally, will funkyhuawei work?
You can find full firmware http://hwmt.ru/oth/HWFF/info/view.php?find_model=mha
Once you flash the update.zip reboot to recovery and factory reset.

Yep. At the unlocked bootloader splash screen, hold the volume up button for 3 seconds to enter eRecovery. eRecovery downloads a stock build and flashes it automatically. Of course, you'll need to setup FunkyHuawei beforehand so that it'll download the version you want. (B136, etc)

No don't wipe everything, just flash the zip reboot to recovery and factory reset.

You mean the command line inside of twrp? If you installed twrp you don't have the stock recovery no more, so you can't do that.

Even if you could boot stock recovery from TWRP, you still wouldn't be able to apply the OTA because in general you can't apply stock OTA updates on a rooted device that has custom recovery.
To apply stock updates you need stock recovery and an unmodified system partition. This means you can't have root, can't have TWRP and can't have other custom mods that modify system such as Xposed. Basically, your device needs to be back on full umodified stock and then you can apply updates.

No, you can't have TWRP flashed on the device when you apply the update, even if were possible to boot stock recovery from TWRP because even though you'd be "booting" stock recovery, TWRP is still what would actually be on the device.
An option would be to get a copy of your stock recovery in .img format or in .zip format and then unroot your device and uninstall SuperSU then boot to TWRP then flash the stock recovery like you would a ROM, then go back to homescreen in TWRP then tap reboot, reboot recovery, this will boot into stock recovery, then apply the update in stock recovery, after you update you'll have to reflash TWRP provided that the update doesn't lock your bootloader. If it does you'll have to unlock it before flashing TWRP again.

HERE IS A STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ROOT ZENFONE 3 FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE UNLOCKED THEIR BOOTLOADER AND ROOTED THEIR NOUGAT ROM PREVIOUSLY.
-first of you need to update your firmware to oreo.
-if you have unlocked your phone bootloader and/or rooted, you need to download and flash the latest nougat firmware through stock recovery which is 'WW-14.2020.1712.85' here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-after you finished flashing the latest nougat firmware, boot your phone as usual. and then download the official oreo firmware which is 'WW-15.0410.1712.31 here https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/
-then put that 'WW-15.0410.1712.31' firmware to your SD card
-your phone will automatically detect an oreo firmware is available to be flashed that are located on your SD card then click on update
-then your phone will go to the updating/flashing process took around 5-10 minutes. after you're done your phone are now using the official stock firmware.
-then to proceed to root your oreo firmware, you need to flash a TWRP recovery. you can download twrp recovery here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KYX8G6wgOa_X7uJfIar7ENuk2Q1nQyWB
-choose the right model for your phone either ZE520KL(5.0inch) or ZE552KL(5.5inch)
-rename the twrp recovery you just downloaded to "oreo_twrp_recovery.img"
-then put your phone to 'fastboot' mode and connect usb to laptop/pc
-put the twrp recovery that you just downloaded inside the 'Kit Root Zenfone 3' on your laptop/pc
-press shift and right click then click on 'Open command window here'
-then on cmd, type "fastboot flash recovery oreo_twrp_recovery.img" and click enter
-it will tell you flashing is finished
-then click on cmd type 'fastboot reboot' and click enter
-then your phone are now using TWRP recovery instead of the stock recovery
-next, go to magisk manager . com (no space)
-download the magisk manager apk version 5.5.5 [2.4mb]
-download magisk v15 [5.81mb] zip file
-boot your phone and install the magisk manager apk like normal
-then put the magisk v15 zip file to your SD card
-then boot your phone to TWRP recovery and flash the magisk v15 zip file
-after done, reboot system from twrp recovery
-open the magisk manager app and you're ROOTED!
done. your welcome.
[MY REVIEW OF THE OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE AFTER ALMOST A WEEK OF USE]
-oreo battery life sucks compare to stock nougat rom
-i can notice the battery drain faster than when im on nougat
-system performance, for me 5-10% faster than on nougat, especially the in settings or swiping the notification panel, other than its the same
-gaming performance are 10-15% worse than on nougat. when i play a game called 'Dokdo', moving the ship around the ocean are smoother when im on nougat and the framerate are stable, but when i play the game on oreo, the framerate are lower and i can feel the difference when im playing on nougat and oreo. the game feels more smoother when im on nougat compare to oreo. other games performance also noticeable when i play 'Rules of Survival', i can feel the framerate are slightly smoother on nougat compare to oreo
-there's no bugs that i found so far
[MY FINAL REVIEW OF ZENFONE 3 OFFICIAL OREO FIRMWARE]
-oreo battery life is real ****, i dont even have many apps installed and the battery life is already ****
-i prefer the nougat firmware compare to oreo.
-the only thing that i like about oreo is the quick settings icon are changed, it looks cleaner and smaller compare to nougat the quick settings icons are bigger and doesn't look good
-everyday i check on https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/HelpDesk_BIOS/ hoping there's a new oreo firmware update saying 'battery life improved' or something thats all i want
*14 february guide updates*
incase you guys hasn't already know, there's a second(current latest) oreo updates from asus, the firmware is called 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40'.
if you are on rooted oreo firmware 'Version WW-15.0410.1712.31' and you want to update to the latest oreo version and root it again. follow this steps below:
*NOTE: you can't proceed to flash the stock firmware if you're phone are rooted so you need to unroot or remove magisk root first before flashing the oreo firmware otherwise the flashing process will fail or a possible of bootloop will occur, so follow the steps below carefully*
-first, you need to remove magisk root by downloading the magisk uninstaller zip file from the magisk manager . com (no space) or from their xda page
-then flash/install the magisk uninstaller zip file from TWRP recovery
-after you flashed the uninstaller, you're phone are now unrooted. then you can proceed to flash the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware.
-after you flashed the 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware your TWRP recovery will be replaced back to asus stock recovery
-so you need to reinstall TWRP recovery as usual through fastboot
-reboot your phone as usual and as you know your phone root access is currently gone since you uninstalled magisk earlier
-to root your phone back, download and install the latest magisk manager from their site or xda site
-click on download zip file, and put that magisk zip file on your SD CARD
-boot to twrp recovery
-flash the magisk zip file that are located on your SD CARD
-reboot system
-now your latest 'Version WW-15.0410.1801.40' firmware are now rooted again.
YES I KNOW IT IS SUCH A HASSLE, BUT THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST GET THROUGH IF YOU WANT ROOT ACCESS. ANDROID IS NOT EASY.
By the way, don't go to magiskmanager<dot>com. It's not official.

Careful with that site, as that's not an official distribution site for Magisk. There was a tweet from XDA regarding that site within the past few weeks. The only 100% trustworthy place to get it is from the official thread.
I'm getting better battery life on Oreo than I did on Nougat. I did do a factory reset after installing Oreo, though, so if you haven't done that it's worth a try.
You're right about the framerate issue with some games. Some that ran fine on Nougat get oddly choppy at times on Oreo. The last Oreo beta (although it had the same version number) was a heck of a lot worse than the release version, so hopefully the next update will help.
the reason why i put the magisk manager official site is because i rooted my phone by downloading both the magisk manager apk and the zip file and the app and the zip file from their official site works for rooting my phone so i think there is no harm. if you feel insecure you can just go to https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
Not working.
I exactly followed the steps but I could not install twrp. Stock recovery still keeps running.
However, If I use the previous version of twrp (20180203) phone cannot boot, then had to flash roms from M to O.
Edit: I tried over and over again and succeeded at last, but I do not know how exactly!

GUIDE UPDATES - 14 february
Hi !
So yesterday I tried flashing TWRP but no luck.
I'm on the latest firmware (1801), bootloader unlocked, stock recovery with no root.
When I try to flash TWRP with fastboot, I get no error message but I still have the stock recovery instead of TWRP.
I tried multiple times and downloaded the file again but it doesn't work.
Any idea ?
aftee you flashed twrp through fastboot. type on "fastboot reboot" on cmd. then if your phone directs you to stock recovery instead of twrp. click on reboot system in your stock recovery. then it will brings you to twrp. i know its weird. but thats what happen to me too at first.
then if you finally got to twrp and you reboot system from twrp but your phone still brings you back to twrp recovery everytime or it stucks on asus logo (bootloop), dont panic, go to twrp and flash your stock oreo firmware that are located from ur sdcard from twrp, then when you reboot system from twrp, then your phone will boot to normal. dont worry it wont erase data.
try this. it works for me.

I've been looking for how to unlock zen 3 oroe. but i did not find it. please help me. i want to root my phone.
Here is the official unlock method.
You will not be able to get OTA updates then, but zenfone3 may not get any upgrade anyway.
I found the solution to my problem (couldn't boot into twrp after flashing it)
1-After flashing twrp, do not fastboot reboot !
2-Unplug the device
3-Power it off (long press power key)
4-Power it on into recovery mod (long press power key + low volume key)
You should end up in twrp recovery or on a screen suggesting to boot into recovery which you do
5-A message will appear asking to allow modification of twrp recovery. Swipe to allow.
6-Done !

if you got bootloop after trying to reboot ur phone from twrp after flashing twrp. flashing the stock oreo rom from twrp again will make your phone boot. thats how i did it. im not sure why it doesn't work for you.
we still need "no verity..." message in oreo. that no verity message appears are actually caused by your phone bootloader unlocked not because of your phone rooted.
Hi !
I installed TWRP to root my honor view 10 3/4 weeks ago.
Today I installed an update. And since then, the phone won't boot past TWRP (which I can access) or Huawei eRecovery mode.
When I land in the eRecovery mode it offers me to shutdown, reboot, or connect to wifi and do a factory reset. When I attempt the factory reset it tells me that downloading package info failed.
I tried to do a reset from TWRP without success gives me ERROR 9. I also tired to install the stock rom (update.zip) from TWRP and I also get ERROR 9.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to phones. Anyone have an idea of a solution ?
Thank you for reading !

When I try to boot the phone it displays the message that the phone in unlocked and should no be trusted, it shows the honor booting screen and after a few seconds shuts down and the process is repeating.
If i try to press the volume up key when booting it takes me to huawei eRecovery where I can either shutdown the phone or download recovery but it fails everytime.
Thanks
Try flash the No check recovery, boot into and wipe cache. Then reboot
Powered by View 10
Try this
1. Flash stock ramdisk img
2. Flash stock recovery img
3. Reboot to recovery with button combination ie; power and vol down together
4. Wipe data and cache
5. Reboot.
Hopefully it'll work if it doesn't flash system.img after 1 & 2 steps and follow the next steps
Hi please specify model
And what update you installed...
If the update was genuinely meant for phone I believe a data and cache partation format should fix this..
I hope you are atleast seeing the honor bootscreen...
Specify model so that we could point you to correct system.img
Also did twrp gave any errors formatting cache memory?
same here
