On the fence between NEW Motor 360 and Gear S2 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

I've been following these two devices closely, and I was wondering which of the two would you prefer. I'm inclined to the S2, but the GPS capabilities on the 360 Sport is pulling me the other way. Any comments?

Same here. I love the customization on the moto 360, regular 46mm one, and personally I like android wear, with massive watchface support. But also intrigued with gear s2 classic and the use of the bezel, nfc for Samsung Pay. I'm just not sure about app support, watchface support on the gear s2

Moto

Both nice but just can't take tizen anymore. That and Samsungs arrogance in pricing. They are becoming apple with pricing and they are suffering for it.

Moto any day for me.

Android wear any day. Tizen is going nowhere

Why doesn't anyone like Tizen? I haven't been following the smart watches closely.

S2 Classic on Day 1 for me - Been waiting patiently to replace my original Gear.

I don't even think it's about tizen, I think it's because Samsung keeps locking their watches to their phones only.

Well the new Gear S2 should work with any android device.
But yea, that's the only reason I gave up my Gear 2 for a Moto 360. The Gear 2 was only for Samsung products. I had switched from my laggy Note 4 to a Nexus 6.
EDIT: ok, maybe not ANY android device. But a lot. HERE.

I own both. The Old Moto 360 and gear 2 neo. The moto looks great but it's rather useless. The apps are generally about the same for both tizen and google. All and all, useless. The gear 2s best feature without a doubt us being able to use the each as a phone and talk. It works fantastic while driving. The speaker is also a huge plus. The new moto 360 still does not have a speaker, a massive letdown. If you are stuck on a moto, I would just get a gen 1 moto 360. The gen 2 is hardly worth the high price, it's almost the same as gen 1. Long winded but a honest reply.

Because that's what they've been told. Most probably haven't even tried both. They are honestly about the same with the same apps. The apps for both are rather useless. I prefer tizen for the better battery life. The apps are nearly identical. I use my gear 2 neo way more than my moto 360.

It as been stated that the Samsung Gear 2 will also be made compatible with other manufacturers Android devices.

The article also says Samsung will release an Android based smartwatch later this year... I'm not even going to attempt to understand that one. The only way I can see them doing that is if they run with Android Wear just to have a device in that space (you know, the Android faithful crowd).
Yeah, the Android Wear bit did confuse me as well. Kinda glad I'm not the only one that gets confused about these things. Lol.

True. Surely Samsung should know how detrimental it is to their overall Smart phone strategy. Hopefully sooner than later

How really? They anyways control more than 50% of Android smartphone market share. I am yet to find a reason why that would hurt them. How can locking customers in their own eco system be detrimental to their profits?
Well yes they have the smartphone market, but with this restriction they will not own the wearable market using Tizen. Wearable is the new fighting ground for devices and revenue.

Not sure if Google Nexus watch will support more then just Google phones (I assume it will be all Android) but it is to be announced in July at Google I/O. It looks a lot nicer then the Gear 2. At that point I have a feeling that the Gear 2 will get phased out if they don't open up to Android by then. Mainly because Google is a super power and they will find a way to push them out of the way. The next 2 months are vital to the GG2's existence outside of the Samsung ecosystem.
Here's a list of the latest Samsung devices compatible with the Gear 2:

What do you mean by opening up to Android? This is built on Tizen, everyone knows that already.
Guess you haven't checked Samsung's financial results lately. Samsung Electronics made 7.7 billion profit last Q. That's just the electronics division. They have countless other companies controlled by same family/chaebol.
For the life of me, I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about the gear series only working with Samsung devices. If and when the iWatch is released everyone will praise them like sheep and no one will complain that it won't work with my note 3. Samsung sells MILLIONS more phones than apple yearly. So why does everyone have an issue with it? Also, since I'm ranting again, leave Android wear for Android. Meaning I don't want Android wear on my Gear 2 neo. Android wear is nothing more than a wearable notification system. Android wear on this device would be like buying a Ferrari and swappjng the motor for an LS7 for no other reason than you like corvettes. Android wear would cripple this awesomely capable device. OK its late.... I'm done. Don't mind me. ... I'm sleepy

Nice rant. I'm with you brother. I'm a big samsung guy and love my gear. We don't know what Apple will bring to the table because they keep putting watches and phones "iPhone 6" off for release. They're so far behind the curve is ridiculous. Now. That being said the one thing you said could be wrong. The initial rumors are apple's Iwatch will run on all devices. That's what the rumors say. It would be in their best interest to do that and try and steal away Android and windows phone customers. We'll see. Maybe the iwatch will be released before the gear 3.. lol

If Apple actually allows their watch to be used with android devices.... It will signal the death of Apple. The last time they said something would work with all devices they meant 3gs and newer. Lol. But really, if it does, Steve Jobs will rise from the dead and smack Jony Ive so damn hard that his face will swell into the Google.com logo of the day.

Gear 2 / Gear Live comparison thread

To make it all a little easier for the consumer to make an informed decision I think it would be useful to build a comparison thread.
This is not for slating or making big statements about Samsung strategy, literally feature and technical comparison.
I.e music : Gear 2, ability to store locally and play through device or phone. Gear live, ability to control music playing on phone.
Please post any areas you know are 100% true and I'll update the first post.
Gear 2, has speaker & mic, Gear live has only mic.
Gear 2 has Camera / Gear Live no cam.

I thought about getting a Gear1, I definitely prefer Android, but decided to get the Gear 2 because development on the original Gear seemed to have all but stopped.
Hoping for development on the Gear 2, but starting to think it may never come with the new Android watches coming out.
The Neo was so cheap that I don't regret it, it will definitely hold me until a better Android option comes out

Yeah thanks I'm sure some might use. However the downfall for this with the gear s Is you are severely limited. At this point why own the gear s? You might be better off getting the gear s2 at this point. That or just get another cheaper smart watch that doesn't have 3g s2 capabilities.
There is a forum on the gear s part that they have been able to get it dang near fully functional but I and a few others haven't gotten it to work on the v10. It sucks as I prefer the gear s but if I can't get it fully functional with the v10 I might just try out the s2

I did just this, switched from the Gear S to the Gear S2.
As you,I actually liked the Gear S,but,I'm glad I made the switch, works well w/the V10.
My preference is the square/rectangle form factor, but, the S2 has quickly grown on me.They finally got the watchband right, flows right in w/the body of the watch & the clasp isn't clunky when doing desktop work.
I still have the Gear2,which is still my favorite watch by far & holding out hope that someone can get it to work w/Marshmallow.

It is for android wear watches so doesn't do much for gear, it only enables replying to the messages even if you are not using samsung's message app. You can just use SMSGear instead of doing this actually. https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/themes/opensource-sms-application-gear-s3-t3557263

I will probably skip the Samsung watch and grab a wear watch instead like the Lg Style. After some reading Samsung watches are great if you have a Samsung phone, but if you do not then it's hit or miss with most apps and some don't work at all. And of course the apps I use are the ones that apparently don't work at all with Samsung. Shame really because I think the Samsung watch looks almost like the $1000 Tag Heuer smart watch. If they would have only used wear software instead of there own.

(I'm not sure where you're at but) Check Best Buy. The Samsung Rep told me you can return the S3 within a 15-day period after buying. I asked the rep at a Best Buy (at a location with a Samsung gallery -- not all locations have) to take the S3 out of Store Demo Mode so I can pair it with my old Galaxy Note 2 but he said he can't. He mentioned I can buy and return it within 15 days if I'm not happy with it. If you're going to do this, see if you can involve a manager. Sometimes reps just say whatever they want to make a sale. But who knows. He could be telling the truth.

Best buy's return policy is 15 days unless otherwise stated. The only reason I know that is they will price match anything you buy within the return period as well. I had bought a TV and on the 15th day it dropped by about $500. Called them up and they refunded that amount. The info on price matching and return policy can be found easily on their website.
So I checked out the S3 at T-Mobile store. Never mind its way to big and heavy. Also it didn't work with half the stuff I wanted to do on my Pixel. I think this watch is great if you have a Samsung phone, but if it's a non Samsung phone then expect half the stuff not to work right. I think I will pick up the new LG Sport watch instead...

If you're concerned about sizes, I think the LG Sport Watch is bigger but along with its size, you get more screen and a higher resolution. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room to improve on battery life for the LG even for its bigger size. I'm on the morning of Day 3 and I still have 62% battery power (granted I turn it off after 9pm and turn it back on at 6am). Lots of trade-offs. But I agree. You get a better experience with the Gear S3 if you have a Galaxy phone. Have you seen this article? http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-watch-sport-vs-samsung-gear-s3
EDIT: One of the best things I love about the S3 is Samsung Pay (way better than Android Pay). Never again do I pull my wallet out (except when I occasionally buy wine -- I still get carded LOL!)

That hasn't been my experience at all. I have a Moto G4 and my wife has a Huawei phone and the S3 works very well with either. I've paired it separately with both plus an older Moto E I and everything works without a hitch. I know there have been some hitches with the IPhone but I wouldn't touch one of those if my life depended on it so I can't comment there.
There isn't a huge difference in the S3 user experience with a Samsung phone versus other branded Android phones. Regardless, if integration with the Google ecosystem is paramount, an AW watch will fulfill those duties better than the S3. But the LG Sport has a few serious shortcomings compared to the S3: inferior battery life, fixed wristband (a comfort and customization issue), and lack of MST. The LG Sport is the best AW 2.0 watch on the market only because it's the only one on the market right now. I too am waiting, I just chose to do it while using the S3 in the interim.

Thinking about buying a Gear S3 Classic, please help

Have the original Huawei watch.... Screens a bit burned in and looking for a replacement. Liked the HWatch, was ehhh with AW 2.0 so I'm fine with moving OS's. Looking around I don't see many options I really like outside of the S3 classic, however I have been reading nothing but horror stories about Tizen 3 update. Is it really that bad? If I'm going to be forced to run a nearly 18 month old watch on original firmware I might as well stick with what I got.
Any input to assist me here?

I have the Gear S3 frontier on 3.0 and no issues. I get 2 - 3 days on a charge depending on the watch face.

I also came from the Huawei Watch v1 and just got the Gear S3 Classic yesterday. The reason I switched was because I also do not like Android Wear 2.0. Overall, I do like the Gear S3 but I also miss the app selection and support of Android Wear. If all you're going to use the watch is for notifications with simple replies, then the Gear S3 will work for you. However, if you're planning on using the watch as somewhat of a phone replacement, then the Gear S3 is severely lacking in that category. The reason why I state this is due to the lack of app developers that support Tizen.
Forget about native Google Maps support on your watch, texting is really only done via replies, Fidme for loyalty cards, i.g. Starbucks, is hit or miss, etc. Overall though, as I stated above, if your main goal is just to have notifications on your wrist, have Samsung Pay, and don't mind using S Health for fitness, then the Gear S3 is an awesome device. If you need anything more, you're better off going with Android Wear for the full application and developer support on the platform.
