I took a plain black case with silver border and turned it into this:
Sure beats the heck out of plain white or black!
Yes, I did this myself, I've painted many notebooks, phones over the years... here are some:

Thank you.... I used many light coats of Krylon Purple Shimmer Metallic
The key is "many light coats".

Sure! Any mods count...

I have an extended battery that came with a plain black TPU case and I decorated it with sugar skull stickers cause I can't leave plain things alone. I also attached a silver skull charm to the end of my stylus. Does that count? lol

Yes, it's the TPU battery case that came with this battery. I was really skeptical to buy it at first since I've never heard of the brand, but it had good reviews and the ZeroLemon was out of stock so I took a chance & bought it. It's actually really good, I'm getting almost exactly 3x my normal battery life for about $20 less than the ZL.

yep ! has awesome reviews. hmmmm , i had the ZL 8500MAH for my s5 but it was such a friggin brick so damn heavy ..
i couldnt get used to it, i had a 5000MAH MPJ one back when i had the S2 < it was so easy getting used to it..
how is this one in terms of weight and comfiness when holding it ? does this battery triple the weight? LOL
if it is not so difficult getting used to it then i might consider getting this one.. has awesome reviews.

It is definitely heavier than stock. I had a ZL for my note 2 and I'd say this one feels about the same. Not so bad that its not worth using though, and the case has little textured bumps on the side for extra grippiness. I have tiny girl hands and it's not too big or heavy for me.
I'm definitely not looking forward to the first time I drop it on my face while lying in bed though :S

the same **** always was on my mind when i was using the ZL on my S5 when i was laying in bed to hopefully not drop it on my face XD
dayumn.. well i think i will bookmark this for now, i really hate the ZL flat brick like case, this Kranich one looks kind of slimmer.
might get one later on, plus its cheaper and has good reviews.

Yeah, no problem.
Side note- I've been trying to think of a way to add some sort of removable hand-loop to the back of it for night-time phone use. Maybe something magnetic, since I already have a magnetic mount in my car & the metal strip is already installed on my phone. Since this is a DIY mods thread, if anyone has any ideas on how to accomplish such a face-saving device please post them!

I don't know if this counts but I got a leather backing on my Samsung protective cover, it definitely looks better and adds a tiny bit of grip compared to the stock case.

[MOD] DIY TPU Bumper case for the G2x/O2x with Extended Battery

I just got a 2800MAH Anker Extended battery from ebay, and unfortunately, my TPU case didn't fit over the extended case back. FatalityBoyZahy suggested that I cut the back of the TPU case off to make it fit, and this is what I did.
What you need:
Generic TPU Case
Xacto Knife/Some sort of Cutting Implement
Patience
Optional:
File
Match/Lighter/Some sort of small controlled flame
What I did was cut the back of the case, a little at a time, until it fit over my phone with the extended battery in. I ended up taking most of the back off before it fit.
I'm not that great with an Xacto, so the cut was bumpy and jaggedy. I used a file to even it out as best I could. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted a clean edge. So, I used matches to melt the cut edge, and when it dried it was a clean, almost factory finish.

Final thoughts...
I think that It came out pretty well. One thing that I do notice is that the sides dont hug the phone like they used to... I think that this is because the profile is slightly different now and I left a decent amount of material. You could probably fix this if you cut a bit more. Its no big deal and you can still press all the buttons. From a distance, this seems like a manufactured case. You can only tell that it's diy'ed when you look at it from close up. Also, I think that using the file wasn't necessary because if you hold the flame there long enough you should be able to melt it down to be even. But don't hold the flame at one place too long... I had my case catch fire once
Cases are cheap, give it a shot
Awesome dude! You actually did it! I'll give it a go after August 25th (Currently on vacation)

Since I saw that post about the case being cut I kind of waited for someone to try it. I might try it if I get a spare tpu case. They're pretty cheap from Amazon. Less than $2 with shipping.

You did a good job and it seems to do the trick nicely.
My comment is for the back of the extended battery cover. I really do not like it. It seems to fit but I do not like the grey. The bumper, you did a good job though!

Thanks! The battery cover really isn't that ugly. It's actually a dark gray with a brownish tint, actually really close to the color of the original back cover. It just looks really washed out in the picture because my camera used flash.

NICE!! So do you not have any back on, just the speck case directly on the phone? And like FatalityBoyZahy asked, does the battery fall out/seem loose in there at all? That looks slick though!
Also, do you have a link to the speck case that you used?

Yes, the battery does secure .I decided to cut off bulky part of the battery door and keep the camera part of the battery door like below picture but turned out I got the different type of battery door (same as OP) so I can't do the mod and can't use the battery door but everything still good .

Aftermarket Replacement Battery Covers (Blk Carbon Fiber Reviewed: 5/16/2013)

***Review: Well I finally got the leather replacement covers in...The black version has an black leather-like material on the back. White version is slightly off white leather-like material. Cut outs and fittings are great. Camera and flash cutouts are more flush with the backing than stock so it seems like better protection from scratching when left on a table. Speaker cutout no longer has the slight bump that you feel on stock. I love the roman numeral "IV" opposed to the "4" that comes stock. Quality feels awesome and I can't leave finger prints on the back of my device now. Also my device isn't twinkling like a twilight vampire on the back (for me that's a plus). S-Beam and NFC still work with the aftermarket as well. Only gripe is that protective plastic cases no longer 100% fit now as the aftermarket battery cover is slightly thicker than stock.

***Review Added 5/16/2013*** Ok...so the carbon fiber variant finally came in. Shipping took a long time (from China) This black version of the carbon fiber replacement battery cover feels similar to the leather variants. I do believe the material is the same if not similar. It does feel nice in my hands and adds a little bit of bulk just as the leather ones did. The camera lens is protected with this cover as it was with the leather one and the speaker cutout is the same. I will use the black carbon fiber more than the leather (i'm a sucker for carbon fiber). I would recommend this over one of the carbon fiber skins as this will not semi peel off and annoy the s*** out of my hand. Installation was as easy as the leather variants and the battery door matches perfectly with my device. I am not worried about cleaning the black version as I don't feel like it can pick up dirt/grime very easily. Signal does not suffer from having the back cover on, NFC and S-Beam work fine as well.

I bought all 4 as my girlfriend got the white s4 and I got black mist. I personally wanted the phones to have a better feel to them and I see most reviews of the s4 people are whining about it as well. As soon as I get them in I will post a review of the fit and quality as the pics from amazon are not that detailed. The leather ones just kills it for me btw can't wait for that one.
I just ordered the black carbon fiber one, can't wait!

I had the white carbon one for my SIII, and let me tell you, that thing attracts dirt like nothing else.... went through two of them in the 10 months I had the device and there's a reason why the letters don't have the silver "metal" emblems embedded in these battery doors anymore - they fall off!
Just a word of warning - I really liked the looks of these for the SIII and I wouldn't waste my money on one this go 'round.....

I had one of these for my S3. It was great because it added a bit of friction plus was just thick enough to protect the camera lens. Just ordered this one.
Is an alumium cover a no go because of reception or can it also be used?

I agree with the point about friction, but damnit that thing got dirty! Did you have yours for long?
Now I kind of like the smooth surface again only for the fact that I can use the PuGoo I have placed around my house - on the bathroom mirror, on a cupboard door in the kitchen, etc.... Love that stuff and was kind of disappointed the carbon was too coarse for the it to securely attach to the PuGoo, safely, it would stay for a few seconds and then give out because it couldn't grip it well enough, unlike how your hands could grip the back case nicely when out and about, and I would use the PuGoo about 1% of the time compared to how often I had the phone in my hands, hah

honestly I don't mind the worn leather look that the white version may/may not get, besides I have a plethora of leather cleaners for sneakers in my closet i'm sure one of them can clean it if it gets dirty.

is there a 'grippier' replacement battery cover (not case!)

Hi.
I'm liking the s4 quite a lot (after uninstalling almost every samsung app)
I'm impressed with the hardware, but there's one thing that bothers me.
I don't like that the battery cover is so smooth, I feel that I will drop my phone any day now.
So, if I don't want to use a case or cover for my phone (don't like the added bulk, even the smallest case bothers me). Is there a replacement battery cover that has a rubberized or textured back that is less slippery that the original?
I really liked my old phones (nexus one and galaxy nexus) the feeling in the hand was a lot more secure because of the rubbery back.
So far I only found a metal battery cover, and cases... lots of cases... I just want more grip, not bulk added to my phone.

I have a cheap 'carbon fibre' effect one off eBay. It's very nice looking and much grippier than the original.

Has anyone found a battery back/door that feels kind of rubberized? perfect example is the ringke Slim case. I love the feel of the case and want a battery cover that feels like that. I really don't care much for carbon fiber look. something with a soft matte coating like the Ringke would be amazing!

I saw it awhile ago on another forum and it seemed to hold up well for them. I've never done it though. If you want to give it a try here are some instructions: (here's a link but all the pictures are down; here
1. Just clean the back of the phone with any ammonia free cleaner - Invisible glass in my case.
2. Buff it dry with any lint free towel (dont want threads in the final product)
3. Find a suitable spot to spray - a cardboard box should do the trick
4. Do 2-3 thick coats - and if you want the lettering to show allow the plastidip to dry between coats (10-15 min)

Aww, you beat me to it.
Pros: Select your own color, Peel it off when you get bored with it and change the color. Cons: Easily peels once it gets started so any nicks can mean having to redo it (thus not too pocket friendly).
To get plastidip to bond better rough up the batt cover a bit with some sand paper. That stuff is super strong and has a ton of different purposes. I use to use it to waterproof my ESCs on my rc trucks lol.

I didn't have any luck with plastidip on my s2 battery cover, at first, it felt and looked AMAZING, however, upon placing the phone in my pocket a couple of times (within a day or two), the rubber coating comes off first at the corners, then elsewhere.

Did you rough the door, with sand paper, prior to spraying, in order to help the Plastidip adhere?
Try a goo.ey skin, it's a sticky pad you put on the back of your phone, it allows you to stick the phone to windows and mirrors too, it also makes your phone a bit more grippy.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gooey-skin-...=UTF8&qid=1431467151&sr=8-4&keywords=gooey+s4
and here is a promo video for it.

It's not all that reliable sticking to surfaces (It's great if you keep washing it, but loses sticky if you don't), but I've had mine on my phone for 2 years now and it's never come off the phone it'self. It does add a tiny bit of depth to the phone, but it's only a tiny bit and it does make my phone more grippy.
Just an idea, and maybe worth a go for £6
I ordered the battery cover from the black edition s4. Its like on note 3. Grip is better and feels way superior in hand

Does this battery for fit in all cases / does it add anything to thickness or edge width?
Please provide more details and a link. Thanks!
I will post few pictures for a comparison on Saturday or Sunday.
I dont have this cover installed yet but I think it should fit all of the cases because I didnt notice any "black edition" cases being made separetly
OK. I recently found another 32GB MDK S4 on eBay. It came with several cheap cases, but also one of the "carbon fiber" looking battery doors. I don't know the source, but it is rubbery.
It has "Galaxy S4" inscribed, near the bottom.
The side edges are smooth and a bit slick, but the woven look area is quite tacky. I like it, a lot.

I understanding is that the side buttons aren't accessible on this waterproof case.
I should be getting this case in the next few days. It's in the customs sort facility on saturday. So maybe by thursday.

Hopefully it's a preproduction run of lifeproof that works okay or has a minor design issue that they didn't want to use.
Worst case, it's a bad knock off and has bad plastic (which I've heard is common), but if it's waterproof might be worthwhile.
I got the obex for 77 dollars and within 24 hours, I think it's value is maybe 30's on ebay due to the damage it got from being with keys in a pocket (lol).

Thank you so much for your reply. The case you recommend far more expensive than the one I posted. Side buttons aren't accessible will be ok for me. I rarely use the side buttons unless I charge it or listen to music. I ordered the case I post just now. I will give feedback here once I get my waterproof case.

I have the obex, and I find it cheaply made.
Like I said above, after having it for 24 hours, I couldn't sell it for 30 bucks with the amount of abrasions and wear and tear it has from JUST being with keys. LOL.
Wouldn't trust a $12 case on waterproofing my $200 (or $600) phone. It probably goes without saying, but any case that doesn't say it can be fully submerged, probably can't. Though I'm not sure that's the kind of waterproof you're after.
Here's some good alternatives.
For just water proof (and dust and sand proof, not submergable.)

I'm not really at a point of wanting pure waterproof but I do want to be good enough that an accidental drop in the toliet doesn't render it useless. I think the lovemei would work out okay and would be much more durable than the obex.
I'm just pissed that I paid 80 dollars for a case that has so much wear and tear with 1 day in the pocket with keys. For the record it's worse than my TPU cases + plastic screen cover, which I always have with my keys and never had this time of damage/wear and tear.
The only plus and only thing I'm paying for is waterproofing. Lifeproof at the same price has a 1 year warranty. Now I understand that waterproofing can't be forever with dry rotting and day to day usage, but I wouldn't trust the obex more than 6 months due to the wear and tear it has exhibited on day 1.
I think I might get this:

Peel-like case for the Pixel XL?

Hey, folks–
I'm on the hunt for a super thin case for my Pixel XL. By super thin, I mean, like in the 0.35mm range like the Peel cases for the iPhone (or Pinlo).
I've been searching around and I think the thinnest I've found so far are the clear case by Google and Spigen's Liquid Crystal Google Pixel XL Case, which appear to be about 0.64 to 1.63 mm and 0.762 mm thick respectively (they don't provide the case thickness specifically, so these are estimates based on product dimensions minus the actual Pixel XL's dimensions divided by two).
These are still too thick for my taste though. I don't like the look of those thick jelly cases.
I ordered a Naked Wrap from SlickWraps on the 10th, but I have yet to even receive a confirmation of my order from them outside of the PayPal receipt and I haven't been happy historically with the clear skins, so I'm looking for an alternative.
Has anyone spotted or heard of a company that might be developing Peel-like cases for the Pixel?
Well said and I am with you. Waiting for either that or a calicase. I did buy the Google clear because it may be perfect.

Considering you have a similar aesthetic, it sounds like, I would be curious to hear your impressions of the Google clear case.
Thanks for mentioning the CaliCase too–another brand for me to keep my eye on, their Ultra Thin cases definitely fit the bill. Too bad they're relatively inactive on Social and don't really talk about what they have in the works.

NP, next week I get it and the black silicone factory G case too. I also ordered a BearMotion because it's $8 and frankly I never have anything but success with them. The sand finish is the best for grip and they are really very thin. Usually no lip coverage though but that's kind of where I want the case to end. Just something about being able to slide your thumb from edge to edge without touching case improves the experience dramatically IMHO.
Looks like Spigen updated the pics of the Liquid Crystal case. Picture says .4 MM thick.

Unless that image is horribly cached for me, it still says 0.4 inches thick and they're referring to the whole phone including the case, which is why I landed at 0.762 mm in my first post because the Pixel XL is listed as 0.34" thick at its thickest point, so (0.4-0.34)/2 = 0.03 inches which is 0.762 mm (even though the back is probably thicker than the front).
Still looks pretty thin for a jelly case, but I'm holding out hope for one that doesn't add even that much bulk.
Doh. For some reason my brain read .4 MM thick.

I will when I receive. A note, get a DARK color. They pick up oils quick. Got a powder blue for my OG Note 7 and wound up with a dirt covered faded case in a week. But alas, the dark ones feel awesome and are thin as ****.
The bear motion cases are awesome. Grabbed a black one and green one. Have the green on my Nexus 6p and love the contrast.
As far as thin cases go...hard to beat.

I'm happy that there's hope for us thin-lovers, but I'm still holding out for a semi-transparent one like the Peel cases so that I can see my phone through it–the frosted white / pretty-much transparent one that they call "silver" is calling my name. Part of my desire for such a thin case is to enjoy the natural industrial design of the phone but give it just a touch of protection. My Nexus 6P had begun to show a few of the drops on the corners recently and that's what I'm hoping to avoid.

I'm happy that there's hope for us thin-lovers, but I'm still holding out for a semi-transparent one like the Peel cases so that I can see my phone through itâ??the frosted white / pretty-much transparent one that they call "silver" is calling my name. Part of my desire for such a thin case is to enjoy the natural industrial design of the phone but give it just a touch of protection. I had one of those for my iPhone 6s+. They are great, would be nice if they made one for the XL
Insignia has a case that's kinda like the peel cases. I had one for the iPhone 6 plus and it was thin as hell and felt very nice. I hope they make it for the xl.
im on the same boat. I ordered another clear case for $8 bucks in the meantime until i am able to get somethign like this below:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01761J26I/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
