[MOD] DIY TPU Bumper case for the G2x/O2x with Extended Battery - T-Mobile LG G2x

I just got a 2800MAH Anker Extended battery from ebay, and unfortunately, my TPU case didn't fit over the extended case back. FatalityBoyZahy suggested that I cut the back of the TPU case off to make it fit, and this is what I did.
What you need:
Generic TPU Case
Xacto Knife/Some sort of Cutting Implement
Patience
Optional:
File
Match/Lighter/Some sort of small controlled flame
What I did was cut the back of the case, a little at a time, until it fit over my phone with the extended battery in. I ended up taking most of the back off before it fit.
I'm not that great with an Xacto, so the cut was bumpy and jaggedy. I used a file to even it out as best I could. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted a clean edge. So, I used matches to melt the cut edge, and when it dried it was a clean, almost factory finish.

Final thoughts...
I think that It came out pretty well. One thing that I do notice is that the sides dont hug the phone like they used to... I think that this is because the profile is slightly different now and I left a decent amount of material. You could probably fix this if you cut a bit more. Its no big deal and you can still press all the buttons. From a distance, this seems like a manufactured case. You can only tell that it's diy'ed when you look at it from close up. Also, I think that using the file wasn't necessary because if you hold the flame there long enough you should be able to melt it down to be even. But don't hold the flame at one place too long... I had my case catch fire once
Cases are cheap, give it a shot

Awesome dude! You actually did it! I'll give it a go after August 25th (Currently on vacation)
And I really appreciate you putting me in the OP!

Since I saw that post about the case being cut I kind of waited for someone to try it. I might try it if I get a spare tpu case. They're pretty cheap from Amazon. Less than $2 with shipping.

You did a good job and it seems to do the trick nicely.
My comment is for the back of the extended battery cover. I really do not like it. It seems to fit but I do not like the grey. The bumper, you did a good job though!

I figured this would have way more views and replies... Guess not.

Thanks! The battery cover really isn't that ugly. It's actually a dark gray with a brownish tint, actually really close to the color of the original back cover. It just looks really washed out in the picture because my camera used flash.

Yeah, I though the same thing... Although I also posted this in the Optimus 2x forums and it's getting even less action there I've been using the case for a week now and it's working great for me though

The Anker that I got is actually a true 2800 mah confirmed by battery monitor widget... I've heard people say the 3500 mah batteries they got were actually only about 2000 mah... Something to consider... Plus the Anker I got was only $10.99

Woah! That looks really good! I might actually give that a go
But does the battery stay securely in place? Or maybe we can figure out how to mod most cases just to have the lump sticking out.

NICE!! So do you not have any back on, just the speck case directly on the phone? And like FatalityBoyZahy asked, does the battery fall out/seem loose in there at all? That looks slick though!
Also, do you have a link to the speck case that you used?

I believe that's the spec candyshell case

Yes, the battery does secure .I decided to cut off bulky part of the battery door and keep the camera part of the battery door like below picture but turned out I got the different type of battery door (same as OP) so I can't do the mod and can't use the battery door but everything still good .
and yes, mine is Speck candyshell i got it from ebay for 12.99 but now its only 7.99 here is the link or you can go ebay and search "speck g2x"

FYI if anyone is interested the battery in above link is phenomenonal. Had it for 2 weeks and get minimum of 18 hours with heavy hardcore usage on ICS rom and well over 26 with GB roms. Shipping was fast and the extra charger comes in handy...

It fits, but the speaker hole isn't centered properly.. I've had one (still do) but I'm using the Sedio Active X which I like better..
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csk3ssfas-bk.htm
or you can get it with the holster which I did

Look at the last pic of this post and you'll see what I'm talking about on the otterbox
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9342504&postcount=12
Besides it covering the speaker, it also covers some of the top of the glass on the phone which the seido doesn't. It's easier to press the volume and power buttons with the seido. And the Seido also provides more grip than the Otterbox. The otterbox can be a little slippery. I think the seido looks way better. Also use XMAS15 if you decide on the seido and you'll get 15% off...

I just purchased an Otterbox Fascinate Impact Series Case case last week and it works great on my Mesmerize.
They have updated the case and now the glass isn't covered on the top of the phone, and the speaker hole is lined up. See photo from the otterbox site below:

I would disagree that it's slippery. It's made of silicone and has bumps in a carbon fiber patteron on the back to prevent it from slipping out of your hand. I have not dropped it once since I've gotten it.
The otterbox case adds a slight weight and bulk to the phone, but I've gotten used to it and I think it's worth it for the protection it provides. I also comes with a screen protector.
I haven't handled an Innocase Active X in person so I can't compare it fairly but I do like my otterbox.
I also had an invisible shield with full coverage but I regretted the extra coverage and would have prefered the standard front and back and ended up removing the shield fully and going with an otterbox case.

Yes, they have fixed the speaker hole issue with the latest revision..
But in the pic you showed the plastic still does cover some of the glass at the top on front (not the actual screen)..
Look at the sedio Active X and you'll see the entire glass is visible which looks better IMO..
And compared to the Seido the Otterbox is very slippery.. The Sedio has finger grips and a lot more silcone, not to mention the plastic hard X shape has a rubbery grip to it as well...
I have the revised Otterbox being shipped to me for free and I will still be using the Seido!!!
edit**
Also the volume and power buttons are easier to press with the Seido.. Not trying to sway anyone's opinion, just making a fair review between the two since I've used them both. I will say Otterbox has outstanding Customer Service and It would probably be more protective in a VERY hard fall, but I think the Seido will hold it's on...
Don't forget about price comparison.
The Seidio case is MSRP: US$29.95 + $5.90 shipping = 38.85
Currently no coupons can be used towards this time..
The Otterbox impact case is: $19.95 + $4.80 = 24.75
Coupon Code tb0111m (Exp 3/31).
You get 10% off at OtterBox.com! (-$2.00)
Free Shipping (U.S. orders only) (-$4.80)
New total: $17.95
I was even considering ordering the seidio case to try it out vs mine, but at $40 including shipping it's too much. I'm happy with my otterbox.
I just got my brother the otterbox commuter case for his mesmerize... It's a very nice case. Found it for around $30 shipped. I can see how someone could find it slippery... it does have a slippery feel to the back of it where there is hard plastic, but I don't think its enough that it would actually slip out of a hand. It definitely seems like it would protect in a fall though.... and it looks great. I've always been more than happy with otterbox... I currently have the otterbox defender case for my hd2, and I will buy an otterbox for whatever my next phone will be.

It definately works... I love mine, but then again I'm biased toward Otterbox cases..
Just in case anybody is looking for the Otterbox Commuter case for your Mesmerize, they sell them at Sam's Club now. They're still obviously only marketed for the Fascinate, but they are cheaper than any other place that I have seen.
I've got two BRAND new otterboxes still in the box they came in and I'm willing to sell them for $20 a peice.. Anyone local want one, let me know...
I just got a defender series case for my messmerize and its great the holster it came with is well built too.ask the holes line up fine and none of the screen is covered.

You aren't serious, right? An air bag? Just get an Otterbox and you'll be fine. And if you want something to read a situation and deploy PRIOR to impact, you really should look into having this for a vehicle first. And really, what are you doing that you get into so many wrecks that you're worried about your phone needing it's own airbag.
I don't mean to poke fun, but seriously man, I hope you are really tired or high. When I get to work I'll call professor x to see what we can whip up for you.
From my experience even the thinner/smaller cases help a lot. Even if an airbag was feasible, it'd be overkill lol.

3600mAh battery with back on ebay

Not sure if this has been discussed before, ( didn't find anything ), but I found an extended battery for the sensation on ebay. 3600mAh and includes a back cover to replace the stock metal one so the battery can actually fit. \
sensation extended battery
However upon inspection of the inside of the cover I am only seeing metal contacts for 3 of the 4 that are on the stock back cover. Its missing the contact for the upper left. Now Question does anybody know what this contact is specifically used for? IE blue tooth, wifi, GSM, ext? I might be willing to sacrafice blue tooth for this, but of course not any of the other radios.
Here is the picture

Also i wonder whether due to the distance from what i can see of the camera lens to the now raised exit hole if it will affect photos/video
I would avoid 3rd party battery covers since the antenna's are located inside them, and you wouldnt want to skimp on quality there.
Cheers

I'd imagine that the missing contact is for the second antenna that the Sensation 4G has over the Sensation (worldwide GSM flavor). Likely you'd lose some signal but only insofar as when compared with the 4G Sensation's additional antenna; however, you'd want to hear some corroboration on this idea before you buy this.

I agree but I prefer keeping my Sensation smaller, so it fits in my pocket comfortably. I swap between Ankers, in effect, does the same thing. That extended thing hurts my eyes, ugly.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
yeah I agree with everyone's statements.
I contacted the Ebay Seller about the missing contact, to see what they say. If I did get it, I would polish the back cover to a deep glossy shine. The mat black is an eye sore
---------- Post added at 11:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:56 PM ----------
Wait a second. Upon closer inspection of the seems on the cover. I believe the main part of the frame is metal. Look at the inside picture, to the right there is part that appears to be reflecting the side of the battery ( probably where paint was not applied ). And for the 4th contact, I could make my own, Just need a sheet of cooper to glue on the inside of the upper.
If I get this I promise to make a new tutorial
How to Polish the extended battery cover of your sensation 4g
I'm just a clueless noob, so can you please tell me how do you even see the inside of the cover to know it is missing a contact? Did you buy it? I don't see a picture of the inside anywhere. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
That bright bit to the right of the battery is the contact needed to make the capacitive screen work. There are a further 4 contacts on my European Sensation (not three). 2 are close together at the bottom and the other two are above and below the hole for the camera. You can see all four on the picture of the inside of the case - they are on upstands because the case is much deeper.
And I agree that the case is so ugly. It ruins a good looking phone. Two Anker batteries would be better if you really need that much power.
I agree the anker batteries have been great... i've never run out of power since I switched to the 1900mah anker battery.
If anyone does order this and try it please report on battery life and also antenna reception.
Thanks!
- David
I just got this. so far so good. the look is nice sleek but still has a buldge. im not bothered by it much. it gives me 24hrs of battery life compared to 6 hrs before.
im thinking about painting it soon. ill post pictures =)
Just wanted to update everyone on this battery and cover. The guy who is selling it says he and his buddy have been using them on their sensations ( with tmobile ) and have not had any issues with data. But he did say yhe backs were 100% plastic and had no metal. I would buy one but they are a little pricey ($99).
I would personally rather buy the Powerskin case, and see if that could be modified to fit an Anker 1900mah battery, and then combine that with a second Anker 1900mah battery in the phone itself....
....and I know the Powerskin itself isn't a looker, but I reckon it looks better than the extended battery......

I have done that, but it is still not enough battery life for me, I have anker 1900 mah, chichitec 1900 mah and powerskin for the sensation. It is still not enough battery power so I hope to sell my powerskin to buy the mugen 3600 mah extended battery in hopes to have enough juice for my cell phone, I am in love with extended batteries!!!
super ugly
EDIT: Eeeeek, sorry for the necropost. Though potentially this is still relevant.
I've been looking at some of the battery options out there, and I wanted to toss in the idea that you could accomplish essentially the same thing without spending $99:
- The back on it's own looks to be ~$26 shipped
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-EXTENDE...ltDomain_0&hash=item460436a316#ht_3144wt_1163
- While they say it is designed for the (pricey) Mugen extended (double) battery, you could probably go with one of the many extended batteries available for the Evo 3D, where double battery packs are a lot more common. The obvious caveat is that if you go with a super crappy EVO 3D double battery, and it only turns out to be 2000mAh instead of 3500mAh, then you're really no further ahead than just buying a better single battery, and you have to suffer through a thicker phone.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-For-HTC...147368?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item33714c23a8
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3600mAh-Ext...580685?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cba3cbdcd

Great necropost! Looks like it's $20 shipped for an extended back.
Also, Anker makes an extended EVO3D battery, so if anyone is looking for a safe bet, there it is. However, I was just trying to find a link and can't. Not sure what's going on?!
Perhaps it'd be possible to stack two batteries and connect the power leads and call it a day.
Just got this double-battery housing in today. Ordered on the 5th (Thursday) and got it on the 9th (Monday). Shipped via usps first class from rancho cucamonga, ca to brooklyn, ny.
I might take some pictures next time I have it apart.
Obviously, this housing is a whole lot lower quality than the OEM HTC one, but that's to be expected. It is good enough, and while it is huuuuge, I think I can get used to it. Plus, I'm not concerned enough about it to wish there was a case that'd fit it.
If you look at all the pictures on the ebay listing, you'll see one of them shows the 4th pad that supposedly only the tmobile sensation 4g's have. The main picture doesn't have it. The version I got does indeed have all the pads that the oem htc one does. How good the antennas actually are is another discussion. Right now, I'm in airplane mode + wifi in my room and am getting full wifi bars (of course the ap is maybe 10ft away)
I do not have the mugen double battery, but I am absolutely able to fit two regular batteries (Anker + OEM) in there no problem. They aren't hooked together (left my other Anker at a hotel, so I need to get more like batteries) but it's a good proof of concept.
The housing is a real pain to get off. Hopefully it'll get easier as it wears.
The camera does not seem to be impeded by the extra hump of the housing, and there's no flash glare either. Everything seems fine, although I should probably test it in the dark and report back.
The buttons for volume and power are pretty cheap as well, but again, it's expected.
$20 shipped for the double-battery housing is a great deal. Link up the + and - pins, and you're good to go.
With just a single battery in there, it'll fall out.
Sleek is nice, but it's actually got some meat to hold onto now which is kind of nice.
Time to see if this will be too fat for my pocket. 2 1900mah ankers should last a respectable amount of time.

Looking For A Case For Your Skyrocket?

I found this case on amazon.
(Since I'm a new user I'm not allowed to post outside links)
But you can find it under the name of "Diztronic Matte Back Black Flexible TPU Case for Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket". Its only $9.90 with free shipping. It has a soft smooth back side which adds a little grip the already slippery back. The only downside for me (might not be a problem for you) is that the volume rocker becomes a more sensitive again that might not be a problem for you.
As soon as I get a chance I will take pictures of the case on the phone as well as off the phone so you guys can see. And I'll update the link when i pass the post limit
Hope this helps!

The gloss black version of that case was one of the first Skyrocket cases ever sold. It's a good case. A few reviews are here on the forum. But post up your pics anways, can't ever have enough pics.
I probably should've checked to see if they already had reviews on it. But yeah hopefully tomorrow I can take the pictures. It looks pretty cool with the white SK.

I used that case til I got my Seidio surface combo. I really liked it. Easy on, easy off, matte finish made it slip in and out of pocket easily. It even fit in my Seidio holster.
The only thing I didnt like about it was the gloss lip around the front, while it looked good, it grabbed pocket lint and made it build up on the screen around the edges.
Good case though. And for less than $10 cant complain much.
Here's a link to the one I bought off eBay.
Yeah that's probably the only other problem I have. But it doesnt really bother me much. A quick wipe with my shirt or something and its gone

I have the seidio it is OK. But I also have this one http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=280790587387&index=7&nav=WATCHING&nid=48204636389 the ringke slim white case. It is pretty much so light of a case still protects the edges and everything unlike the barely there cases. This is the slimmest case ever makes your phone the a looker.

Also have the ringke slim white case. Definitely a great looker. Only problem I've had is the usb plug on the bottom breaking off.

That's a good looking case.
I hate the caps though. I'd want to rip them all off.
Does it look flakey or "broken" with the cap removed? Like it's obvious that something used to be there and is now missing?
Or does it look okay?
Any chance you could post a macro picture of where the cap broke off?
Didn't had the issue with breaking that part of.

Yeah I love this case.. It gives me a awesome looking white touch to it, without the whole phone being all white. Personally think it is ugly when the front is white too. I like the back white. The black and white makes it look very nice. People always asked, but what is that for a phone? Is the Skyrocket *****es lol

Hey guys, just got this phone today, well yesterday now I guess. Anyways, I was looking at this Ringke case and I was wondering if in fact it does have the weird cut out on the top corner? I keep seeing it in the product pictures and I cant figure out why it's there.

First two pics are the top headphone cap on and off, last pic is bottom of the phone with the usb cap broken off.
The cut out is because the Japanese version has a antenna for watching TV and it is right on that corner. Look it online and it also has that ugly hardware button in the front instead all touch buttons.

Thanks for the pics.
Looks just fine with the cap ripped off.
I like that the buttons for volume & power are open.
The only thing I don't like about the TPU case is that it has a cover over the volume buttons.
The nice thing about that is the power button is open, so it's easy to know what end is up when you're grabbing the phone while it's in your pocket.

Close but not quite right.
It's because of the Korean version's DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting - i.e. mobile TV) antenna.
By the way, many prefer the physical center button over the capacitive variant offered in the US.
Thanks I was close. Thanks you for clearing this exactly up. I appreciate it.

Yes, it's the TPU battery case that came with this battery. I was really skeptical to buy it at first since I've never heard of the brand, but it had good reviews and the ZeroLemon was out of stock so I took a chance & bought it. It's actually really good, I'm getting almost exactly 3x my normal battery life for about $20 less than the ZL.

yep ! has awesome reviews. hmmmm , i had the ZL 8500MAH for my s5 but it was such a friggin brick so damn heavy ..
i couldnt get used to it, i had a 5000MAH MPJ one back when i had the S2 < it was so easy getting used to it..
how is this one in terms of weight and comfiness when holding it ? does this battery triple the weight? LOL
if it is not so difficult getting used to it then i might consider getting this one.. has awesome reviews.

It is definitely heavier than stock. I had a ZL for my note 2 and I'd say this one feels about the same. Not so bad that its not worth using though, and the case has little textured bumps on the side for extra grippiness. I have tiny girl hands and it's not too big or heavy for me.
I'm definitely not looking forward to the first time I drop it on my face while lying in bed though :S

Yeah, no problem.
Side note- I've been trying to think of a way to add some sort of removable hand-loop to the back of it for night-time phone use. Maybe something magnetic, since I already have a magnetic mount in my car & the metal strip is already installed on my phone. Since this is a DIY mods thread, if anyone has any ideas on how to accomplish such a face-saving device please post them!
I don't know if this counts but I got a leather backing on my Samsung protective cover, it definitely looks better and adds a tiny bit of grip compared to the stock case.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01547WEPC?psc=1&ref_=ya_aw_od_pi&tag=androidcentral00-20&m1k=vb_ac
Came in today ... Initial impression: really liking it! Low profile, little to no bulk added, fits nice and snug and adds a great grip! Power and volume buttons still easily identifiable and responsive ... Seems like it'll provide decent protection, but hopefully I won't have to test that aspect of the case [emoji12]
Will update as I get more time with it, but seems like it'll be worth the 12/13 bucks!

Is that all TPU? I bought this one.

While the one I have is serviceable, it doesn't help with grip, so I'm looking for some TPU.

It's not as soft and sticky as some other TPU cases I've used. It's a bit more rigid than your typical TPU and not as "sticky" ... slides in/out of my pocket and case easily.

I received my i-Blason in the mail today. I've been using the very case you linked. The i-Blason one is without a doubt easier to hold. It provides so much more grip compared to the plastic snap-on case. The snap-on case does seem to provide a slightly larger protective lip on the front of the case, so the screen won't touch a flat surface when face down.
While I've only had the i-Blason for a few hours, so far it seems like a great deal. Especially for those that want to show off their backside. (Pun intended) The snap-on case is still another great deal and despite it's defects I still like it, I already miss the feeling of the ridges on the power button. I think everyone should keep in mind that both cases seem to be minimalists cases, in which they will protect the phone from simple scratches, bumps, and minor drops.
Cool, thanks for the info. I just ordered the i-Blason a couple of hours ago.

So I have to say I am a little less enthusiastic about this case thank I hoped I would be. I already submitted a return request through Amazon. I find that the edges of the case are not well done, they are squishy and don't tightly hold to the phone. I guess I am spoiled by the Incipio Octane, which the phone "snaps" into and literally fits perfectly, no movement, no squishy.

I skipped every other case and ordered a Incipio Octane Frost last week. I could already tell from the increased price and reviews of each product that there was a good quality difference there. Though my Moto X is not here yet the case came in and it is top notch. I would expect most cases of quality be around $20 and not less.
That i-Blason is so clear it looks like it can get beat up real quick. Even though it is less visible, I prefer frosted.

I just got my iBlaison clear case: it's OK. The cut-out on the back is off-center. I hope this doesn't stain as badly as my G3's, where the case picked up dark smudges around every corner and edge of the case. And, the stains doesn't come off since I tried cleaning it with soap and water.
Damn. Got an email from amazon saying mine shipped today but not due til the 20-22. WTF? I ordered 2 weeks ago as preorder. Said they would be in stock on the 15th, so it is shipped early, but damn. Two weeks to get it after shipping?

That's what happened to me. I waited two weeks for the case and it shipped from (I think) China because the shipper was DHL International.
Just got mine. It's a decent case, but not perfect. Not sure what to expect for cost. I have rubber back and I feel safer now with case on grip wise. MUCH easier to handle 1 handed. I have big hands and was never concerned about size of phone. I don't have 100% fit around buttons or directly across. Bottom half fits better. My phone has tendency to run warm. Can feel warmth thru case. Current temp 105. I have white front /back, so I'm definitely grateful to have something on this versus bumper. I usually never use a case, but felt prudent to do so with this phone. I think people will be okay with this case. Not perfect, but it doesn't suck either.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk 2
I agree with above. It's not air cushioned like some Spigen clear cases are, but it's actually more supple and durable than I thought it might be. I ordered the Case Mate Naked Tough case today, and this should do fine until that comes.
