I'm on BOFE w/o TWRP recovery however, I'm rooted with the kernel exploit. I want to take the update that came out a while ago with the security patch. When I attempt to take OTA it says my phone was altered.
Question is if I do a factory reset will that unroot me and allow me to take OTA or do I need to Odin?

You must Odin. Factory reset alone won't do it.

OTA just updated Nexus 5 to 4.4.2. I've lost TWRP and ROOT. Can I use stock recovery to install superuser, if so, how? The reason I'm asking is I don't to start over from scratch if the bootloader has to be unlocked.
Note: I didn't loose Hotspot tethering after OTA 4.4.2 update. It kept all my settings.
Update: I think I've figured out my own question. The bootloader has to be unlocked, so you'll lose your settings and data. Lesson learned; just update using zip in recovery mode next time.
Either use cf-root or twrp to get root, only time the phone gets wiped is if you unlock the bootloader, and ota updates never relock the bootloader.
There is an available OTA that is only available OTA. I believe this is the update that includes VOLTE. I'm rooted and have flashed TWRP. Even when I do a factory reset my phone is still flagged as being suspected of root, therefore I can't receive the update. Does anyone know where I can either find a stock rom to flash that has no root flag or perhaps another work around.
Android version 5.0.1
Kernel 3.4.0
Build LRX21Y
Software D85020f
That's all my software info. I'd really appreciate any help and I won't forget to thank you
If you have the software update prompt you should be able to update but will lose root. For safety flash stock recovery then run the update. If you dont have an att sim you may have to borrow one or buy a prepaid.

It's not a prompt but when I go to software update it says there is a new version available. It goes through the entire DL and install and at the end rejects it and says "You're device is suspected of rooting."
Even after doing the factory recovery it returned the same message. That's why I need a stock rom to flash so the system won't think it's ever been rooted.

Some people has been able to update with the stock debloated rom from cmulk. But thats why need to remove teto by flashing stock recovery. If you are still unable to update you have no other choice but flash stock 10d via LG FLASHING TOOL.
That's what I did. There is oneclick root for lollipop now though once you're updated.
I'm on the XT1540 and I got my OTA notification and went back to stock recovery (still rooted and unlocked bootloader) but it fails halfway through flashing everytime. I reflashed TWRP and captured the OTA into a zip but get an error about updating binary or something when flashing it. Is there something I need to delete from the OTA zip to allow it to flash in twrp?

You cannot update your systems software using the OTA update if you are rooted and have modified the system in any way as there are checks of original system during the auto update over the OTA. This means having the original recovery too. Wont work on TWRP or CWM. So no root and no custom recovery for OTA. Unlocked bootloader is okay.
In case you want to try the OTA update then what I have noticed on my XT1550 dual sim APAC version is that even unrooting it using the SuperSu unroot option is not going to help. In my case I could download the OTA and waited till it replaced the system software but got stuck midway of the boot animation.
I had to flash the 23.72-33 version of the stock ROM and opt for the OTA update. This time though I was successful.
Hope this info helps.
Yes, what arunhebbare says. you need to back up al your data and restore your stock firmware and than update via ota.
that is the best way of doing it

This...do a full factory image restore, then adb sideload the ota file. It's signed. TWRP can't install it.
Just use fastboot to flash the factory image for the version you want ... screw wiping your user partition like the above recommends.

This...I can't understand, for the life of me, why everyone is wiping userdata with fastboot....that wipes your android data, and internal storage in one shot. Cache erasing is another totally unnecessary step. All that's necessary, at the most, is a factory reset with TWRP to wipe the android data and both caches....but even that shouldn't technically be necessary for an update like this. It's not like this is the marshmallow update!!

@arunhebbare I've got the APAC version of the G3 as well, which ROMs are you flashing? I could only find images of the India version, did you use those?
2 months ago I decided to root my Pixel 3(to improve Camera Performance). While rooting I mistakenly download Factory Image of Pixel3 XL(crosshatch) and patch it with magisk after that phone went into boot loop . After some period of time I recognized my childish mistake and downloaded the latest factory image for pixel 3(blueline) first flash the stock image to get phone out of boot loop after then I rooted without any problem. But since that day I am not being able to receive any OTA updates for my device, is it because I removed the stock OS and flashed Factory Image of my own , and also If i want to sideload OTA updates with magisk what are the procedure for that.
P.S Thanks in Advance....much needed help

If you're rooted you can't take an ota directly. But follow this guide and you can get the ota, apply it, and root again. Pay attention to when you can reboot. https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html

That was discussed in several posts here recently: https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...32382/page3857
Apparently it has been going on for 3 years now. Some people are impacted, others are not. Luckily, I have not been impacted so far.
You can sideload the OTA. Instructions are at https://developers.google.com/android/ota You must re-root after sideloading.
Hi,
Same problem here.
But the link https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/tutorials.html doesn't work, neither this one : https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...32382/page3857
Can someone tell me how make the OTA update ?
Thanks

The new link is https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/
The Magisk forum on XDA has shutdown. Use Github instead.

Thanks for the link.
But if I follow the guide, it says:
After restoring stock images, apply OTAs as you normally would (Settings → System → System Update).
But the problem is my phone doesn't receive OTA updates
I'm stuck in November security update, and my phone doesn't see any update. So what can I do ?

I don't get update notifications, but I see the update when I do Settings → System → System Update. If you don't even see them, you'll have to download the image from https://developers.google.com/android/ota, then sideload it and reroot. You may be able to patch the downloaded image before sideloading, but that opens the door for more potential problems. I wouldn't recommend it.

Unfortunately, when I do Settings → System → System Update, my phone doesn't see any update. It stucks in November
So I cannot keep my root ? There is no other way to update ?

No other way to my knowledge. You can re-root after the update.
Whenever i click on software update it says connecting then gives me a message Registration Failed.
How am i supposed to get phone updates after root?

Stock updates require an unmodified system, and they also require stock recovery, meaning, no root, no exposed or any other kind of system modification. Even if you did find a way to apply the update while being rooted, it would probably soft brick the device, then you would have to repair the device, IF it can be repaired.
If you want to apply a stock update, return your device to full unmodified stock system, then the update should work. If you have custom recovery, you need to flash the stock recovery back onto your device before you apply the update because the stock update requires stock recovery in order for it actually flash the update.
After applying the update, root the device again and install custom recovery(if you had custom recovery).

Thanks for the reply.
Is there a way to recover my files and settings exactly as they were after the update since the phone is erased when i unlock the bootloader?
