Tethering speeds EXTREMELY slow - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have been using the native tether unlock app by mike, and it works great. I have been tethering for awhile with zero issues. Now, when I tether, my speeds are literally 90 kbps when on my phone they are 1.5 kbps. Anyone have any ideas what could be doing this? I don't recall changing or deleting anything. I'm kinda lost. Other than reflashing MOAR ROM, I don't even know if that would fix it, but I don't know anything else to try. I even tried using my VPN and its the same speed. So I don't think it is sprint throttling me. I think it might be the phone.

[Q] Couple of data speed questions...both weird!

Will keep this short and sweet...
I average 300 - 350K/sec over the mobile network normally...NEVER higher.
When I use pdaNet on the laptop, I get speeds of up to 600K/sec...why is this? Sometimes it will back down to the normal "max" of 350, kinda like its being throttled, but then boosts back up to unreachable speeds on the phone...WTF?
also
At my college, the wifi is amazing. I had gotten up to 3Mb/sec with G2 and G2x.
With sensation, I get 300K/sec...never more...tho TONS of bandwidth is available...again, WTF?
Sorry if this is n00b-ish, but I really dont get it, esp with the mobile network being faster when shared on the laptop. I never hit the 5 Gig cap yet, so that's not it.
Any insight on these mysteries?
The Sensation has a data latency issue and T-Mobile is aware of this. In the mean time, try this. It helped me, but I have to do it every once in awhile.

Infuse internet speeds (Network and Wi-Fi)

Hello, I am having some issues with my Infuse. When I am connected to my Wi-Fi, Browsing the web is very sluggish and YouTube videos are pretty much out of the question for me. I'm just wondering if this is a hardware malfunction or just the infuse in general? Is there any kind of tweaks that I can use to speed up the internet connectivity via Wi-FI? Or something I can do to my router settings to speed this up? I can sit right next to my wireless router and it still doesn't do any good. The speeds I am getting on speedtest.net mobile app are:
Wi-Fi = Ping: 71ms DL: .43Mbps UL: 1.11Mbps,
AT&T 3g(I do not have 4g connectivity where I am at) = Ping: 181ms DL: 2.77Mbps UL: .62Mbps
Laptop on Wi-Fi = Ping: 52ms DL: 5.27Mbps UL: 2.48Mbps
*NOTE* This is on the same wifi connection and on the same server.
Change your modem to KK3 and set your router to WPA2 encryption cause wep is junk
Which Modem+ROM+Kernel is OP currently using please?
Not exactly sure on which modem or kernel right now as I'm at work, can look when I get home. I am on the infused v2.2.3 rom by gtg. Whatever his rom comes with is what is on my phone. I will also try those router settings when I get home, thanks for the replies.

Well I believe it's KI3... and infused kernel.
So all I can say is the modem you have is what works best for me, so that's fine, although some people report that KK3/4 work better for them.
As far as the rom goes, gtg does BRILLIANT work and I have much, much respect. For my particular Infuse 4G and location, however, I never got good Wifi results with Infused. Don't know why.
You'll find differing opinions everywhere, but I have the best wifi reception with MIUI, but there are too many other things about MIUI ROMs that bother me, so I don't use them. I find it unstable...CM7 is also great on wifi for me.
If you can't get results with infused, try another rom!
For network, try APN trick or Thunderbolt...
hope you work it out!
Well today while I was on my break I did another speed test and got pretty amazing speeds for AT&T 3g. So I think my issue is just wifi. Is there a thread you could point me towards to try flashing another modem to see if it fixes my issue? What exactly does the modem control?

diablo009's CWM-flashable modem thread is stickied in Dev.

To be honest the question you're asking is a bit above my understanding, but from what I can gather:
-Modem is a piece of firmware that interacts with the radio hardware in the phone
-Affects signal strength and performance, data speeds, can affect battery drain because certain modems will tax the battery more/less
But not sure about wifi effects, really. In any case, I've always found that switching ROMs and kernels is the only way to achieve any significant improvement in wifi performance...but that's just my experience.
Thank you for your help. I will try a different modem and/or rom and/or kernel and post my results after doing so. Hopefully I can solve this issue. I just don't understand why I get good data speeds when connected to 3g with a good signal but when I am at home on Wi-Fi it just craps out. Again thanks for all the replies.
Just flashed KK3 and although I am getting better wireless reception, the dl and ul speeds are still the same. Give or take a little bit. Is it plausible that this is a hardware issue?
Yes it's plausible. But probably not really one you can do anything about.
The infuse's wifi reception seems to be a weak point of the phone, at least against other phones that have been in my house connected to my router. Maybe poor internal antenna quality/placement?
Best option is to play around with different ROM/Modem/Kernel combos until you find one that works for you, imho.
Another thing you might try (I did) is putting a higher gain antenna on your router. Most stock router antennas are between 2-5 dBi... you can find indoor ones up to around 10 dBi...
I think of it using a metaphor: wireless signal = sound waves
The router is trying to talk to the Infuse, but the Infuse is hard of hearing, so the sound (signal) isn't getting received very well. Ideally, I'd like to get the Infuse new ears or a hearing aid... but since that's not possible... I'll just give my router a megaphone (antenna) so it can shout a louder (stronger) signal.
...That was a bit silly, actually... hehe.
Anyways, good luck! I relate to this issue cause I've been there many a time.
Well it can't possibly be my wifi router or isp. The download speeds on my laptop are pretty good. I get good wifi reception on my infuse(full bars) but my dl and ul speeds are just crap. My brother has a cheap android phone on boost mobile and when I run a speed test with his phone on the same wifi network I get around 3Mbps down. It must be a hardware faulty. Is there anything else that I could try other than a different rom/kernel/modem? Anybody know how much Samsung charges for repairs?
Don't blame your phone or rom to quick. I noticed my problem came from the Internet itself. I had to call att to fix my slow speeds by resetting my connection on their side. It could always be the Internet providers fault as far as your wifi goes, and network is a whole other story.

wow, I didn't know that.
I changed my home's router to WPA2 and the speed improvement on my Infuse is shocking. Switched back/forth a number of times to verify and download speeds went from 7-8Mbps to 14.2Mbps. I feel stupid but am happy nevertheless.
thanks!
(ha, now everyone in my family will have to change their device security...xbox (son1), Playstation (son2), AppleTV(me), iP4s(son2), laptop(2, wife), nook color CM7 (me), imac(me) and I'm sure there's more!!!)
You should always use WPA2 when securing your internet connection over your router regardless of what you use your internet for. This is how we keep assholes from stealing our internet connection. Always run a speed test from www.Speedtest.net to be sure your getting your max mbps you payed for, otherwise make the call to Whoever, At&t f'd my line up yet again saying something about my modem wasn't updated which is complete bull**** cause they never send out modem updates, and my speed was running at 0.91mbps instead of 6.56mbps, said I needed to reset my modem and took me through a 30min process just to get my speed back to 6.56mbps.
Having a Dual Band Router and Dual Band Internet card may provide even better results. You can always use 1 of the bands and have your family use the other band.
Well I just can't find an issue with my actual internet. My computer gets decent speeds. My Xbox gets an awesome connection when I play it. My brothers crap android phone even gets better speeds when I run a speed test on it. I just don't understand why it would do it to my phone. I will see how wpa works here in just a bit but I don't see it fixing my issue.

Is there anyway to change any wifi settings on the phone itself? Other than the options in the settings menu?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Your phone doesn't allow you to really change any major Wifi settings, Just add Network connections. Any settings would have to be changed on the routers settings itself. Sorry I couldn't be much of help.
Edit: Woops! Actually if you open up the Wifi Settings and tap the menu button click advanced. It allows for extra settings for setting up a connection. Might help you if you need to put in a specific port, DNS server, Proxy, Static Ip, Ip Address and etc.
Any help at all is a lot for me. I'm just going to have to conclude this as a hardware issue. I just don't see how though. Thanks to everyone who has replied, one thing I learned is how much a difference WPA2 security makes haha.

[Q] Speed Test 24/7 App

I'm currently throttled from AT&T until the 27th. What i'm looking for is an app that will speedtest and suck data from AT&T's network constantly. Anyone? Anything?
Lol. Well on mine I just turn on Pandora and stream with the volume down. I am sure there is something else out there.

Doing that already, but I want to MAX out the connection that's available.
This is going to cause you to get throttled more frequently and at lower usages and if more people start doing what you're doing it's only going to make it worse for the rest of us, just saying.
Seems like Pandora is the best way to go about this. Doubt my small data usage at work is going to affect anyone else and if it does then they can identify the problem and fix it. Thanks unlimited..

[Q] Experiencing super slow data speeds on g2x - Any known fixes?

So I have this g2x and besides a few other problems, the internet doesn't seem to be working. Trying to browse the internet feels like its using speeds of less than 2G, as it took like 10 minutes to load phonedog.com. When I connect to WiFi it works like a charm. Additionally, I flashed the Weapon g2x ROM/ CWM in an attempt to fix the problem; still, internet is super slow.
Do you guys have any ideas as to why this is happening or how to fix it? If you need anymore information to help me I'll be glad to provide it.
Have you gone over your monthly data cap? You could be throttled.

sounds like you are being throttled by t-mobile. Call CC and see what they have to say.

Problems with mobile Hotspot

So I tried to use my P2P as a Hotspot, but it's lagging bad not working at all. I've used it on other phones especially unlocked phones but never acted up like this. No download speed. I tried changing the apn settings but no luck. I'm using on Tmobile network so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks
Screenshot of my ridiculous speed
Something strange is happening with T-Mobile.
Upload is fine. Download seems to be throttled.
This is on a tethered device.
Everything works as it should when the phone is not tethered.
I know that's weird. I wonder if we need to change something on the settings. I glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I thought it was my phone. I really like it but this is a huge problem that bothers me especially since I use my tablet for business and most of the time I use my Hotspot
Sent from my LG-H901 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Did you switch to the T-Mobile One data plan? I read that they limit tethering speed on that plan unless you pay extra. I haven't switched, I should try it out and see what happens.
Edit:
Never mind! I'm getting the same. Here are my results:
1) Phab2 Pro direct: 22.03 Mbps
2) Phab2 Pro tethered to my old LG G3 (CyanogenMod): 18.92 Mbps
3) LG G3 direct: no data (crashed every time, these constant crashes in apps are one reason I got a new phone, but I digress)
4) LG G3 tethered to P2P (with ",dun" APN setting): 0.53 Mbps
5) LG G3 tethered to P2P (without ",dun"): 0.19 Mbps
Conclusion: it's way slower. But, add dun to slightly increase speed.
