Anyone notice the brightness throttling that happens when taxing the processors?
I find it will drop it down to 70% when using gmaps navigation and usb charging. Anyone know of a way to bypass it?
Thanks gang!
I mainly noticed it when the phone is warm, when trying to go beyond 70%, it says something like brightness is limited because if the phone temperature. Anyway the p amoled seems to have little amplitude in brightness, maximum is not so bright and most importantly for me, minimum is too bright especially with the light off. But black are really black, not grey.

Is there any way to calculate the maximum Nits of the Desire S screen? Or is this published somewhere?
Thanks
According to GSMArena, the max brightness on a white screen is 193 nits... that sounds horribly low, even the Incredible S and Sensation, which I thought use the same SLCD, are 275 and 438 respectively. Why is the Desire S so low?
Can anyone shed some light on this please? Or is there any way to push it past the maximum brightness available in Android settings?
Just put it on auto-brightness...

No I mean is there any way to push the screen beyond 100%, maybe using some kind of hack? Because surely it should be able to reach the brightness of the Incredible S, which uses the same screen?

Hang on a second...I don't see what you trying to achieve out by this?
Apart from in direct sunlight the screen is easily bright enough. We spend most of the time trying to minimize the screen brightness in an attempt to minimize the biggest battery consumer - which is the screen. I've read several posts complaining that the Auto-Brightness setting is in fact too bright and several people have hacked the code so that it displays dimmer settings by default.
So why would you want a brighter screen? do you live a desert?
I'm not intending to have a pop, just trying to understand, if it's simply because our device scores less than the others....Who cares!
ps
Whats a nit? I thought that was something children get in their hair?

It was partly curiosity (as I was under the impression that the SLCDs should similar, if not the same, brightness levels) and partly because I find myself in sunny situations where I can't see the screen quite often.
And a nit is basically 1 candela per square meter, a measure of screen brightness.
Well, I have it set to auto brightness, but even when on full, it doesn't take much sun - take today, overcast bright - to render the screen all but unreadable.

I'm not going to disagree with you on that , as I myself also find the device pretty un-usable outdoors....even in the UK weather. Although it is possible when at full brightness.
In fact I'm pretty sure that I've simply trained myself not to use the phone outdoors just for that reason.
So back to my original query
Does anyone know any type of hack that allows pushing the brightness beyond 100%?
Is it true that setting the Screen Brightness to AUTO means more CPU-usage?
This might bot be significant, but interesting non-the-less
thx

I would imagine it would use a little more CPU, but I leave it on all the time and I never notice a dip in performance.

From what I've read the auto brightness only effects(negatively) your battery life. But I haven't tested so I don't know for sure. Mine isn't on because most of the time it can't decide between bright or not, which is really annoying
Hi all
I am having a strange issue with my Nexus 5, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this:
Auto-brightness is off, brightness is set to maximum. Every now and then, as I am using the phone, the brightness would change. It would go slightly darker, and then sometimes after some time (minutes) slightly brighter again (back to maximum). When this happens, the actual brightness settings slider does not change, it's always saying 100%. I've tried to notice some pattern in the occurrences of this issue, but so far cannot identify any steps to reproduce it. It is easily spotted when the screen has a big area of a solid colour, e.g. on a web-page's white space. So most often I see it while scrolling a news website. Note that during these brightness changes, my environment's lightning does not change (auto-brightness is off anyway, so this should not matter).
I don't even know if this could be down to a software or hardware issue.
So, anyone had similar problems?
Thanks,
Nik

How can you use the brightness at maximum on this phone? This phone has one of the brightest displays I've ever seen. At 30% or so it's brighter than most phones on full.

Well I think that's beside the point, but let's say it's a personal preference.
And also it is possible that one would like to have a 100% brightness in light/sunny conditions, so then this issue could become relevant for anyone.
Last time I used 100% brightness on a phone screen was on the first days of my gnex.
Displays are in indoor situation much too bright on 100%, brigther doesn't look better all the time. I am going with Auto-Brightness (to have it at 100% in outdoor situations) but it is still to bright in low light situations. I have to wait for a customrom to adjust this like I did with the gnex.
Can not understand how people can use it at 100% all the time.
Why do you feel it's necessary to argue whether 100% brightness is useful or not?
That's not the point of the original question.

I've been having the same issue; glad to know it isn't a defect, and that it's supposed to do that. Thanks for the information
I want to start a bounty (if there is even any interest for this?) to disable the screen brightness throttling.
Now of course I understand people say "oh it will damage your phone" but you know what, so will overclocking your processor and graphics etc.
My problem is that whilst not even doing intensive tasks, my screens maximum brightness lowers, apparently due to temperature throttles. It is really frustrating because sometimes the phone does not even feel hot, and I'm not even using the phone intensively.
Even if there is no interest in this, I'd happily pay someone to increase the temperature throttle for brightness reduction.
Many Thanks

Maybe you have it set for automatic. I have have my auto setting turned off and set to full brightness. It has never changed or become dimmer and I play a rather demanding game for an hour or more at a time.

It happens on the Snapdragon model 9005 when auto brightness is off, brightness is set to max and under heavy load. Even worse if you are charging the device at the same time.
There are other threads confirming brightness throttle.
Hell, I even got a message in brightness settings to say it.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
yes, brightness (and CPU) throttling on ALL N9005 devices is fact, although some perform better (later throttling) and some not, which maybe has something to do with CPU-binning (search for that, the higher the number the lesser the voltage, less voltage means less leaking current > lower temp under load) i'm sure this is kernel related, so theoretically it should be no problem to disable it with a custom kernel!
due to "display problems" i switched through 6 devices, 2 of them were noticeable better in regards of throttling... as always with consumer devices: it's a bit "luck of the draw" which device you get...
I have to agree with the others, I have never seen that message in normal use. The only time I ever experienced that message was when my phone was in a car holder on the windscreen and it was 34 Celsius outside on holiday. For example, I could play a game in my home (in the UK where it is currently much cooler) on full brightness and never have any noticeable problem with brightness throttling.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
The throttle will only activate if you have the screen brightness at 100%, a quick workaround would be to set the screen brightness to 99%.

Well I guess the issue her is that mine is not a 9005, but a 900A.
So that might have some bearing as I run mine at 100% brightness all the time and at nigh as I am going to bed i play Valkyrie Crusade on the charger and have never seen any flicker or dimming in video brightness.
I just this weekend played NFS: Most Wanted for more than three hours straight with at least 2 hours on the charger and all at full brightness and never saw this. I am sure because I usually use auto brightness but don't like it shifting brightness whilst playing a game and changed it back as soon as I was done. The thermostat in my flat is usually set at 23.
Also like I said, its not like I have never seen the message, just in vastly more strenuous situations than you are describing which again makes me think you have a hardware fault making this problem occur more frequently.
Let's see if someone else can replicate your problem in similar circumstances to see if it is a more widespread issue.

I was using a LG optimus G pro before this one, in my opinion the bright is poor in this phone vs for example S4 or LG. So , will be very interesting get a solution meaby by kernel or similar to get more bright. I offert another 10$ if anyone can developed any thing in this direction.. thanks in advance

Buy the n900 (exynos).. it doesen't have that issue
I've read many threads about this issue and I guess that it persists only on SM-N9005 Snapdragon devices. I live in Greece and in summer when temperatures are really high, the thermal throttling issue becomes really annoying especially when gaming, because thermal throttling affects screen brightness, CPU clocks and GPU clocks too! For those who don't believe this, here's a screenshot of my N9005 when overheated.
maybe this...?
I'm in the US, with a rooted N3, 900t. stock kernal and ROM, and have also experienced the brightness flicker/throttle.
I've noticed it under varying circumstances, but yes, most frequently when plugged in and surfing web.
I have Xposed framework installed, with a CPU temp display module. Based on what I've noiticed, the dim happens around 146-150 degrees farenheit. Most games, however, will not allow the dim to occur.
There is also another Xposed module I have been using with mixed results called DVS disabler. It will randomly keep the screen from dimming at temps as high as 167 degrees farenheit! (at that temp, i can feel the heat coming off the screen at almost an inch away)
Side-thought::: I have a 'tempered glass' screen protector on that may/may not be affecting the whole temperature thing. not certain.
I get this issue too... Sometimes not even doing anything that intensive... Hopefully it's a simple kernel tweak.

Hello XDA community,
As I am sure a few of you have experienced, the Razer Phone will drop the maximum device brightness substantially as a result of even a moderate system temperature increase. For me, this occurs consistently after I am running any GPU intensive game for more than 5-10 minutes (CSR 2, Black Desert Mobile etc.)
Is it possible to change or turn off this function in any way? The maximum NITS of the device is not impressive to begin with. Having the brightness potential effectively cut in half whenever I run Youtube in HD is rather ridiculous. I have read conflicting reports that some users brightness potential will 'default' after a period of lite use, but this is not the case with my device. I am forced to restart the device entirely to regain its original maximum brightness capability.
Does this community have any thoughts on a potential fix? Are there many other users out there experiencing this problem as well?
Yes same issue even when just watching video or YouTube. It drives me nuts. It's like brightness is turned down half way. It bloody awful and needs sorting. Would prefer the device to underclock rather than dim the screen. ?
**UPDATE** Possible fix for this issue.
Good morning XDA,
I have been spending some free moments working on a solution to this problem and I may have found it.
I recently rooted my device and installed Kernel Auditor to edit my build.prop....KA also allows the modification of pretty much any value you can think of--this includes the enable/disable of thermal profiles. When I toggled off ALL thermal profiles I no longer experienced the screen dimming phenomenon--the negative byproduct of course is that your phone will turn into a hot pocket. More testing to follow, but for those that are rooted I would appreciate it if you could try and replicate my results!
tl;dr -- Kernal Auditor > Thermal category > disable all 3 thermal profiles > no screen dimming/phone turns to lava.
No don't do it. Turning the throttling off completely will fry the main board and CPU / memory chips. Don't do it trust me I killed my last phone doing the same thing. It's the CPU that needs to throttle back not the screen brightness. Really don't understand why they would lower brightness rather than just throttle back the CPU.

They do throttle the cpu but it takes enough heat.
The reasom the screen dimms is because of the heat pipe that is connected the back of the display. Disabling such mechanism might put the backlight LED to risk. But that seems less likely.

Do you have a source for that information? I have seen from tear-down videos that the heatpipe is indeed attached to the back of the lcd panel, but I have not found any information on the specific mechanism of action that causes the thermal screen dimming.
Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
