Hey guys. So I know a few things about this phone and have been taking pretty good care of it...only two drops from about three feet away from the ground. However, I dropped it in the toilet today. Now, I put it in rice for two hours and then got it out. I tried to turn the thing on, and it succeeded. The bad thing is, when I turned it on, before my boot animation ended, the screen flickered and turned off, and that's when I pulled the battery out of my phone and continued to leave it in rice as I type this right now. Is my phone busted permanently, or is there some hope?
You should have left it to dry like 24 hrs or more. You might have fried it. Let it sit at least over night and keep your fingers crossed.

Does the fact that a rice grain being in the headphone jack have to do anything with my phone screen flickering? I'm sorry, I'm being paranoid right now, but I'm just desperate to get any info I can to fix my phone up...I need it tomorrow....

That's called wishful thinking. I seriously doubt the rice grain is the problem.

I got a friend who dropped his phone in the water once. He did the rice trick but waited for more than 24 hours before attempting the first boot.
Now his phone works great except for battery issues. He has the Galaxy Nexus, so he can't change the battery easily. He'll just wait and buy a new phone someday. He just has to keep a charger near!
What about your phone? Anything new?
Well I tried this morning, the screen first started to go sort of whitish during the boot animation. Then, the screen returned to normal but remained unresponsive to my touch...I'm leaving it to dry more because I guessed that water was still near the screen, causing it to be unresponsive.
I've done this exact thing and the phone from it, mostly. I had constant signal issues afterwards and got rid of it.
The rice does seem to work, but.. you're supposed to take the battery out immediately and put it all in the rice to dry. 2 hours isn't going to cut it.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but, sounds like its toast.. you can try though. Continuing to take it out of the rice and turning it off/on wont help.

You should have taken it apart and left it in the rice for a couple days as soon as it got wet. Now it really doesn't stand much of a chance. You screwed up bro.

Okay so my insurance wont cover it and the phone has dryed in Rice and i followed all the advices that were online.
Tho i couldnt remove the batteri and i know this is a crucial point since the current+water will destroy the circuits.
Now my phone either wont start, or sometimes it will try to boot showing the google logo and then crashing (it cant enter the OS).
Is it worth trying to repair the thing? I dont think it will be a problem for me to change a circuit board og replace another part, but since i dont have any experience with phones i dont know what part i should start with.
The phone costs 580 dollars here in Denmark where i live.
Is it worth it ?

You can open it up, get some rubbing alcohol and submerge the board into the rubbing alcohol. Use a soft tooth brush and scrub the board. Usually the board gets corrosion/dirt from the water. Once thoroughly clean put a blow dryer to it (use medium to no heat. DO NOT PUT THE BATTERY IN THE ALCOHOL. ONLY THE BOARD!
I've tried this before and it worked like a charm when my Galaxy Nexus had water damage.

As soon as you dropped it in water you should have turned it off and left it off for days and possibly even took a hairdryer to it or let it sit in front of the heat vent.
Number one mistake is trying to turn it on. If anybody else drops the nexus in water. Because it has no removable battery cover. Rice won't do the trick. It would take way too long and the water would have already rusted the metal components and trashed all the pop connectors. If you drop the phone is water. Quickly take the entire phone apart. Than put all the pieces in rice. That will allow the rice to actually absorb the left over water. YouTube "nexus 5 tear down". Its always a good thing to know how to do this.

I just finished assembling the Nexus again and im a very happy man!
After disasembling the phone i found that the top board was very teared by the water and it was clear how some of the sockets had poor or no connection.
I used pure alchol (Dunno what its called in english) and a small toothbrush to clean the board. I dryed the board with a hair dryer on cold setting to avoid over heating the CPU parts. Now the phone works! and it doesnt look like it has any pearment faults or flaws. Even the display is normal and all my previous settings and the OS was intact. Thanks for the help everybody! and yes the best thing to do is remove the powersource and dry the boards individually if exposed to water

Hey guys. I followed the instructions and have gotten my phone to power. Problem is when it goes from the power up screen that say "Google" to the colored balls, the balls freeze and it goes back to "Google" and freezing there. Any ideas on what I can do to get it to boot?
I just need it to boot long enough to retrieve my pictures and this hot chick's number I got right before the phone was dropped in the pool. Thanks.
edit: When I hold Volume Down/Power, I can get it to the bootloader. Anything I can do from here to salvage my stuff? I'm not familiar with bootloader options. Plugged into my computer, I can hear my PC make the noise as though it's connected which typically then leads to the phone's drive being accessible on the computer however it then immediately makes the noise of the phone being disconnected.
I believe I am having the same problem as you. I briefly dropped it into a creek for no more than a few seconds. That was enough to make the display unresponsive to touch. I was able to power down and quickly did so.
Unfortunately I wasn't near any rice immediately (motorcycle) so I put the phone in my mesh jacket in 100F weather and hoped for the best. I left it off at this point. When I got home I turned it back on (stupid I know) and the N5 didn't boot, only stopped at "Google" boot. I powered down the phone and rebooted, this time it worked. A quick checkup showed the external speaker didn't work for Play music, but did work for T-mobile visual voicemail. Also, the earpiece didn't work when I attempted to make calls.
At this point I realize I probably screwed up the phone big time. Once I realized not all components were working I put the phone in a ziplock bag with brown rice new from the store. I guess I'll let it sit for 48 hours and then attempt again. If it doesn't work, I'll attempt taking the phone apart and cleaning each part. And I'm really only going to attempt that because this phone isn't even paid off!!
These phones need to be made tougher! I am losing hope that there's any chance of my phone surviving at this point.

I dropped my nexus 5 in the pool while I was on vacation. When i came home i clean all the parts with rubbing alcohol, my phone worked! A day later i tried again but my phone froze on the start-up screen (with the magical floaty balls) and i haven't been able to turn on my phone since i got it to work. Nexus 5 Water damaged
Hi guyz,
I need some help, lately my nexus 5 was been water damaged. I immediately follow OuncE718 suggestion but I still experiencing problem. When I press on the phone I can feel the vibration but Google-boot logo will not display and it will only display a white-dim light in the bottom part of the screen. I tried to connect it in a Windows computer it will be recognised as a Nexus 5 phone. Does it mean I had to replace my LCD.?

Who knows what damage did the water do? If the corrosion sets in, your device will be hosed for sure.
It's really a fools errand to fix water damaged phones as no one can be sure the extent of the damage.
If you take it to a service centre, they'll most probably replace the lcd + mobo which will cost a bomb.

If you buy a new LCD, how will you know the Motherboard still works? Then what if you have to buy new motherboard?
Cut your losses. Replace the whole phone. Then get insurance

Spending money on a water damaged device is usually money wasted. Cause there's usually more things wrecked you find out along the way.
Save the money to go towards a new device.
I had the same problem, I used all the methods that I've read with no solution, my last hope is that the battery got damaged, is there a chance that maybe the battery is the problem? I can get a replacement for 20 dollars, but what do you think? thanks

Hi everyone . I have been using nexus from about a month now.
Yesterday my phone went completely mad .
I had just come back from washroom and tried unlocking the screen .
My phone didn't even register my touch . the emergency call started itself. Buttons got pressed on it own on my pin screen . it took me ten tries to even enter my own phone . then the home screen wasn't responding. The touch went off calibrated . I tried switching off and on . tried touching power off . airplane mode started and was switching on and off . I finally got it to power off . then restarted it again . no use. Same thing. Tried again. Same . and again. Same .
Finally with great difficulty logged back in my phone and did a factory reset. That too buttons kept pressing itself . I dunno why this happened. I haven't dropped it or anything. I lost all my data . even after the reset it doesn't feel.like it felt first .
Did this happen to anyone else ?? Please help .

Sounds to me like your phone needs an exorcism.
Sounds to me like moisture got to it somehow. Condensation maybe? Only thing i can think of that would cause random and erratic touchscreen input.

My hand was wet . but how can water enter due to it ? I'll go check it out. I have warranty. Lol for a moment I thought my phone was hacked and someone was controlling it .
Steam from a shower or bath is enough to ruin the phone.. It doesn't have to physically get water drops on it.

Turn it off and come back in a couple days. You should have done this in the first place but hey, woulda, coulda, shoulda, you didn't know. Hope it works for you otherwise it's RMA time.
Try putting it into a bowl of rice for a few nights. This generally pulls all of the moisture out. It definitely sounds like you got some moisture in there somehow.
I've also read somewhere that putting your phone in a bowl of metho will pull out moisture. But do not quote me on that haha.

I had a samsung nexus s and whenever there's moisture on the screen (mostly sweat), it randomly presses anything. So I wipe it off and leave it for a few minutes, then it's back to normal. Didn't happen yet on my N5 though.

Little toddler nephew threw it in a pitcher of water. Sister dried it with a blow dryer and she couldn't get it started to so asked me to try so here I am. She tried to turn it on once about a MONTH ago but nothing since. I'm not sure where to start the trouble shooting so any help would be appreciated. I've taken apart a few devices so I'll be doing that shortly as well.
1) I THINK it's charging but there's no charge indicator at all. A red light came on the first time I plugged it in very briefly but it never came back on again. I'm guessing it's not the battery.
2) I've tried all the button combo to try to get it in various modes, no joy here.
3) The phone vibrates when I hold the power button ( or various button combo ) but the screen doesn't come on.
4) Computer ( Win 8) sees the phone as Nexus 5 but when I click on it, it's blank. The properties show me, LGE, Firmware 1.0, and its serial number. Power source: Battery
5) Several times that I've tried the button combos it would play a little jingle. I'm guessing it's a default LG jingle.
Any suggestions on what the problem will be ? I will probably dunk the thing into alcohol once I take it apart. I'm guessing the display would be the obvious guess but it's a bit pricy to buy just to find out that it's not the screen.

Ahh.. Aren't you suppose to NOT turn it on? You shouldve disassembled it first and extracted the battery then clean and dry. I surely hope it hasn't caused any short circuits from all those multiple tries.
Also the Nexus 5 does not produce any boot sounds.

If you didnt let it dry for at least 24hr min before turning it, then its as good as dead... you maybe be lucky that half the things work but over time, you will find it frustrating not having able to use the full features..

Agreed, but like I said it's not mine. I'm still on a trusty Samsung Galaxy 1.
I'm going to pry it apart just to see.
It may still be able to be saved. Open the device up, take a soft tooth brush and some rubbing alcohol, scrub the whole board, breaking away any corrosion that started to build up. If there are any black scorch marks on the connections, then take a pencil eraser and use that to help get those off.
I've heard of using rice to help absorb moisture in cases like his. Might not help now but can anyone confirm if this is maybe a good idea for anyone else faced with a similar problem?

I know there are many threads about this but some didn't cover my questions and they don't say what to do when you have done things you aren't supposed to do.
So I dropped it in the toilet, I don't even know how but as soon as I did I took it straight out, dried it with a towel and TRIED TO TURN IT ON AND CHARGE IT. I later found out that I shouldn't have done these things. Anyway afterwards I put it in a container of rice with the lid shut. It seems to be much drier now but still isn't working, however the computer makes a sound when I plug it in. I then went and took the back cover off and saw one of the wires (on the right side) seemed to have a busted resistor, I was wondering if that was the problem and it could be fixed?
P.S. When I charge it all I get is a red light.
I'm from Australia so country related help would be great.
UPDATE: I just plugged it into the computer again and the screen seemed to light up a bit for about 30 seconds and the phone vibrates when I hold the power button.
UPDATE 2: I can hear noises like the screenshot noise and the volume up and down noise.
You forget tot wipe the sh!t of. What about the rice? Stil beable to eat it? Or taste it like sh!t? Wrong forum btw.

Sorry about the wrong section I didn't realize that there was a troubleshooting one there. Please use proper English next time.
I am getting notifications and the notification LED is working but the screen just lights up without anything on it.
Keep it a few more days in the rice. I hope you didn't fried it. Do not try to charge or connect to pc yet, don't power on for some time. After 2 or 3 days on rice, try to start it up. If it vibrates but not starting you need to wait some more time on rice or just go to a repair shop. Don't try to charge the damn thing !!!
I had to keep my x10i about 7 days on rice, I almost abandoned it, but it's working just fine now.

If it vibrates but not starting you need to wait some more time on rice or just go to a repair shop. Don't try to charge the damn thing !!!
I had to keep my x10i about 7 days on rice, I almost abandoned it, but it's working just fine now.

Thank you, I just took it off charging straight away. Is there a specific way I should do the rice and will it still work if I have been charging it but it still vibrates etc as you described?
Rule number 1 after dropping electronics in water:
turn off and leave to dry for at least 3 days before turning on again.
If you follow this rule, you'll have luck in 80% of the cases.

I know but seeing as I already broke that rule, is there much hope with this?
Should be completely covered in rice. Vertical positioning is recommended, keeping about 2 or 3 centimeters from the botom of the jar ( or bag or whatever ). Shake it slowly every day then put it back on rice. I have no idea if it will work or not, even without charging it, it's about how much water got inside.

Ok, thanks, I don't think very much water got inside, when I opened it there was just a bit on the back cover and some condensation on the front-facing camera.
I hope you get lucky. I didn't disassemble mine completely, just the back cover, battery, sim and SD card, but it wasn't a nexus.

Search for threads about how to clean the board with alcohol so it doesn't corode.
More than likely you're out of luck cause you turned it on and even plugged it in directly after. It's likely shorted out now.

It seems like everything but the screen is working. As I said it seems like a resistor blew, couldn't I just replace that little cable?

I had to leave my sons iPod touch in rice for two weeks before it finally fired up and started working as normal (even after I charged it and switched it on as soon as it hit wet)

Maybe your screen it's dead, you should change it
