GPS accuracy issue with Non-Sense based roms? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I've avoided the issue with GPS by using only sense based roms, but I wanted to check up on this topic because I'm hoping to flash CM this weekend.
ISSUE: GPS doesn't sync properly and can't find location when using a rom that strays away from stock. I had a LG G3 that had the same issue when I flash a different rom as well, so I figure it's not simply a phone problem.
I want to use CM because certain things (fm radio, battery conservation, customization) works so using a sense based rom is not my solution in this case. For instance the FM radio app doesn't work on the Verizon M8 Sense roms. So my question is if this is a solved issue or something that is unavoidable due to software/hardware incompatiblity?

I successfully fixed this this week using Echo5kilo's technique from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/gps-issues-roms-stock-t2891292/page4
No success with just finding a GPS.conf file and pasting in. Just did a nandroid backup via TWRP, cleared dalvik and cache, installed the linked rooted sense ROM (I used the 5.0.1 since was already on lollipop), got a lock with GPS test, copied GPS.conf and gpsconf.backup to external SD, reinstalled nandroid backup via TWRP, and overwrote GPS files in system.Etc.
All is now well on CM 12.1.
Good luck!

[Q] I regret flashing CM7

I wish I had known before flashing CM7 that many have had problems with the gps. I certainly do. I tried using my nandroid backup to go back to the Froyo ROM I had flashed from AddictiveTips, but backup and restore on ClockworkMod just leaves me with a blank screen. I've seen some tips on fixing gps, but most involving going back to a sense ROM and starting over. I'm not a computer whiz and some suggestions are hard to follow. I tried one involving Fast Reboot and Faster Fix, but it didn't work. Since ClockworkMod's restore won't work, I have to either wait for the CM7 gps problem to be fixed later or try re-installing the Froyo ROM from the SD card (which may or may not work). The gps with Froyo worked great. Any suggestions?
Nandroid backup didn't work?
And what problems are you having with gapps?
Me myself have problems in CM7 as well -> the gapps cannot be installed (well, CWM didn't mention any error when installing) but after boot up no gapps is there, after tons of research here and no solution too, and I rolled back to froyo.

CM7 working fine on my HD2. I'm running it from my SD though because I don't want to root.
From what I understand the GPS will not be fixed by a cm update its got something to do with the hardware you have to do http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11853529&postcount=2085 this to fix it. After I did the gpsclr fix mine has worked flawlessly. Also I don't think its only cm roms that have this issue.

ah i mistook gps for gapps. my mistake... lol
Odd... CM7 works perfectly on my Motorola Droid and Nook Color and I've also never had a GPS problem (even on older nightlies). What make and model is your phone? And are you running off a CM7 nightly (if so what build?) or an RC (the latest is RC4 as far as I know)?
Gps worked perfectly using Froyo (rooted, ROM from AddictiveTips). I have an HTC Desire (CDMA) from US Celular. No, I'm not running off nightlies. I installed CM7 RC4.
The fix suggested above sounds like I would have to first flash a sense ROM and then come back to CM7. Other than giving me extra space for apps, it isn't worth it. I could get by with Froyo since everything worked with it. With CM7, the gps doesn't work at all. Maps keeps searching for satellites and never finds them. I really miss not having voice directions.

all you need to do>
get a fresh rom myns or any that you like in reality it doesnt have to be sense if you just want to get away from cm7 altogether
but then boot into cm7,
plug it into your computer
load the new rom onto your phone
boot into recovery
then install the new rom.
sound good?
I appreciate the suggestions, but I decided to go back to Froyo and my gps is working again! Unfortunately, Clockworkmod won't let me re-install any backups, and I have no idea why. All I get is a blank screen. Fortunately, I can install from the SD card, which I did to get Froyo back. Since nandroid backups don't seem to work, I have to setup my phone from scratch everytime I make a ROM change.

[Q] Having serious GPS issues that I can't solve...

I'm wanting to know if flashing a new rom can automatically change my RIL's? I know radio does not change unless I purposely flash a new radio, but without using ROM names I'll try to describe my issue and the reason behind my question.
I was using a Sense 3.5 rom for a week with everything working just great. I decided to try a different kernel with that rom and after flashing the new kernel my gps stopped working. OK, reflash the original rom and things are back to working well.
THEN...I decide I want to try CM7 so I flash a CM rom and try it out for a couple days, decide that it's really not going to work for me and go back to original rom with original kernel.
NOW...gps is taking forever to lock, and google nav doesn't lock at all unless I open up a gps app like gps status or chartcross gps test. I flashed cryps AGPS patch for tmous users and it still has this same issue.
Any ideas, opinions, or other solutions are greatly appreciated. I use my navigation a lot and it's a key requirement for my phone so quick gps lock is extremely important for me.

Mostly the rils are replaced by the rom IF the chef puts it in. But more inclined all do.
And yes the ril and radio is essential to have gps working quickly. So you can just match the radio to the ril.
If that doesn't work, compare the rils on an old nandroid and the new rom. I'm going to say that the rils will be different.
And also in my experience, flashing different kernels also affects the gps locks as well. For me bricked and faux kernels always borked my gps. So now I only go with the bundled kernel, because most times, the dev tested out the gps with the kernel before releasing it.
You can always flash the matching radio to the RIL you now have, that should sort you out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200403
Thanks for the answers and suggestions so far. So this is what I've done so far:
- reflashed first rom after doing a factory reset/wipe in ext4 recovery. It used to work well with my signal and my gps using the latest 10.56 TmoUS radio. After trying to get lock for 15 minutes I gave up
- read the RIL thread and flashed the recommended .169 ril for the 10.56 radio and still bad gps, no lock. What's weird is in both the above cases Ucenter gps app finds satellites but google nav and endomondo do not lock, ever. So I know my gps hardware is working but it's just not communicating with any apps.
- I'm going to now try using Superwipe and reinstalling the rom 1 more time, not sure if that will do anything at all but I'm out of ideas. Otherwise I may have to give up on this particular rom even though it used to work well.
And no, the rom does not recommend any particular radio.
Remember to try the rom (with matching ril) without flashing a kernel first.

[Q] Help - Touchwiz vs AOSP on S3

I dont know if its my phone or what but I haven't had any luck with AOSP ROMS on this phone. It seems like there's always some sort of bug that just kills it. I flashed a CM10.2 rom that felt like speed of lightning but was bugging out. I tried ecilpse and some others but all were to buggy for me. I recently tried to flash liquid cause I wanted to run something else other than touchwiz but it ruined my phone and now I cant flash custom ROMS(i have a help thread up..feel free).. Anyone else having bad luck on these AOSP ROMS
Not what you want to hear, but I'm having no issues with flashing new ROMs. I'm only using LiquidSmooth and waiting/hoping for a 'complete' 4.3 version, but again, no problems with flashing to a new ROM. I have been running LS2.9 (4.2.2) for several weeks and on Sunday flashed up to LS2.10 (4.3) but went back to 2.9 because when I mirror my phone on my AppRadio3, it doesn't auto-rotate my screen to landscape, so I have a portrait orientation of my phone on the radio display, which makes it so small as to be unusable.
I don't recall what method I used to root my phone, but I'm using TWRP 2.6.3 to perform a) a clean wipe every time (Factory Reset + System), then b) install the new ROM, and c) a final reboot back in to recovery and flash the latest gapps image. Does it take a little longer to follow this process? Sure, but it's a reliable process that means I don't have issues afterwards to mess with, so the extra time spent on the front end is worth it to me.
I've had moderate success with the AOSP ROMS. Each one seems to have it's own small bugs, but the AOSP ROMs that I've tried didn't have anything that ruined functionality. Been running Dirty Unicorn ROM for the past couple days and it is really solid. Haven't noticed any issues at all with it yet.
It's got to be your downloads or install process. Do you check MD5? If no then start. Remember just wipe data for each install. Updater-script in ROM zip wipes system for you. Cache resides in data. Do NOT restore system data using TiBu. Other than that I don't know what else to tell ya bud :/

Haven;t had any trouble with AOSP flashes, but many of the ROMs or maybe most have some bugs. All the so called AOSP ROMs are built off the same base, CM10. None of them support all the hardware and software features that Tocuhwiz supports. I find the custom TW ROMs far superior in features and as good or better in speed as well.
Make sure you are flashing a compatible Kernel when you switch between CM based ROMs and TW based

Anyone able to get GPS working in non sense ROMS?

It's the only issue I see with the GPE rom from digitalhigh, sigh.
You should be able to no prob. Do a search for "GPS" in the thread see if anything comes up. For aosp roms you get GPS by flashing or restoring a sense Nandroid, getting a GPS lock, then go into recovery and flash or restore an aosp Nandroid. I don't think gpe needs that tho

Did you try a nandroid of a sense ROM with GPS working then going to gpe?
Yup, didn't do squat, had a sense rom with GPS lock, rebooted into recovery, flashed GPE, no dice
I should note that it SEEMS that it's working but in fact isn't, I'm a heavy Google plus locations user and it's using cell triangulation not gps, no luck in gps test either
It's working fine here. Flashed GPE 7/3 yesterday afternoon, used GPS that night for navigation. Worked like a charm.

[Q] Anyone succeed with GPS with custom rom

Hi all,
Did anyone able to use gps with custom rom ( I would say CM base). I research and try everything that's I could find here but not success.
Every time I do clean wipe everything including a internal storage. So that will nothing left behind.
I know that stock is work fine with gps. some said that install and replace stock but I have no idea that what file will left in our device when we delete all.
Always had the same problem when running Paranoid Android (not tried other ROMs). Had to return to stock, where GPS runs fine. Would also love to kknow how people have got it functioning.
I am trying too. I modified gps.conf files, tried some workarounds mentioned in cm11 thread like restoring GPS Status backup from stock with titanium so far with no success. Some people say that it works but it doesn't on mine whatever I do.
I run on CM and I don't have any problem. Everything works fine with gps and I didn't use any fix or something similar.
I'm on CM 11-20140627 and I have 1032 phone.
Interesting, why does it work on some while it doesn't on others? Maybe some variants are having problems...
I have xt1033 asia version.

Which recovery did you use?
CWM
As I wonder is about library missing or some partition need from stock ?
I've also been using the micro gapps package, would this matter?
I had problems with Paranoid Android and GPS too... If anyone know something about that, please comment!

Hey i found a solution, you have do this flash following in this order.
- flash stock 4.4.4 (depend on your current)
- flash cm
- flash gapp
I try this twice and work like a charm.

I am having he same problem on XT1032 running Carbon ROM. GPS worked fine on stock, no signal with Carbon.
I found many answers saying to flash stock and then reflash custom ROM. I will try it, but I wonder, how does this help? Isn't the phone restoring the whole system? Do I have to keep the gps.conf from stock?
I've read in some CM thread on here you need to flash stock ROM then enable GPS and get a lock. Once you've done that then flash your custom rom. Sounds STUPID and dosent make sense I know, but a lot of people say this is how they got it to work.
EDIT: I can confirm. I've just flashed stock 4.4.4 and played around with google maps. Flashed CM11 nightly and my GPS is now working ok

Did you wipe anything, like Dalvik, Cache and Data, or you just flashed it over?

Sorry people, I was so happy to have my phone back working, I forgot to write it back here.
Yes it worked indeed, all I did was flashing back the stock, going outside to have a gps lock with gmaps, then re-flashing back the Carbon. I also kept a copy of the gps.conf, but I never needed it, the GPS got a fix quickly. Working fine so far, it only takes some tens of seconds to fix, from time to time.
I can't remember if I also did all the wiping, I think I didn't, but I made so many trials in a couple days, I am not sure.
Thanks a lot guys!

Yes, this worked for me too on PA.
I couldn't even see a single sat (it wasn't just a lock problem). No matter with gps patch, gpx fix app, or gps.conf I used.
What I did?: Back to stock, lock GPS, flash again the custom ROM (but don't wipe /system!).
Good luck on that guys, it should work for you too.

GPS works fine on this unofficial CM11 rom for me. Stable daily driver rom for me, YMMV.
General advice is to:
- make sure you get a GPS lock on stock rom first
- flash CM11 (or other custom rom)
There may not be a file left on the device. it may just be that stock contains the code to initialize the GPS functionality on the SoC or chipset firmware. Whatever, it works...
