Not taking a risk so posted here! - General Questions and Answers

Ok, new to xda so thought if I posted here and it WAS in the wrong topic then at least I wouldn't make a COMPLETE idiot of myself.
I HAVE tried looking and because I'm male (genetically inferior) I just CAN'T find what I'm looking for!
I AM looking for a post that lists a typical build file for say a standard Android tablet with a simple descriptor for each line.
I KNOW this sounds obvious, but all I can find are posts that say "this line can be altered to increase this" or " to stop that"
I am just looking to find a build file with simple remarks for each line.
F I can get this then I can then search each line MYSELF to finds out the specifics for the line I need!
An example would be...
ro.build.fingerprint ........ (Specific to a device and explains what carrier,os version,make etc)
This is just an example!!
I am NOT after a post which is specific to ANY device, just a list of "Commands" with variables for the commands that are commonly used in a "base" build file.
I KNOW it will depend on android version (as each revision CAN include new commands) so for a base line, I am currently using 4.4.2.
As I said, I'm new to xda and I'll probably get slammed for not finding the right postn(that probably already exists) but BELIEVE ME I HAVE looked where I thought I should.
Sorry for rambling.....
Richiety.

I was struggling with finding how build props are used and found searching for them in source code was helpful.
I even learned about some build.props I wasn't aware of that way.

Terms and Acronyms WIKI

Hey guys, i've been following this forum for the last few weeks and i always find more and more terms that i need to investigate
terms like
fastboot
nandroid
recovery image
etc...
now don't get me wrong, i can google like the best of them, but i was wondering - is there some kind of wiki or central repository we (as first time readers) can look at whenever we are lost?
just a thought...
Every phone family on xda-developers forums has a corresponding wiki entry. Some phones do have a listing of common abbreviations, acronyms, and terms used around that phone.
Since this is probably as central a site to G1 modification as you can get, it's probably the best (only) place you'd find something like that. But it's not here (yet).
Wiki editing is open to all members. It might be a bit too much to expect those doing the bulk of the modding work to write their wiki pages as well. When you do your research and find out what the terms mean, why not try your hand at wiki editing and help out the next guy?

Android branding question...

Hello all
Was reading: go to 'android.com' then add '/branding.html' **
In particular #4 and #5 - uses of 'Android' and 'Droid' ...
Just want to check my understanding:
With #4:
I guess that means you can use Android/Droid as long as it is combined with other words? ie. you can't just call your app/blog "Droid" or "Android", you need to have words before/after it...?
and for #5:
Does that mean if we do use Android as part of the name we need the 'TM' sign after the word Android?
Reason I'm asking is i've just recently dived into android dev, and started a blog "random android stuff", which uses 'android' in the name. If i'm not mistaken, according to #5, this means I should be putting "random android(TM) stuff"... is that correct? (I'd prefer not too, it just looks odd :S)
Cheers,
pyko
ps. not entirely sure if this belongs here, but it didn't feel like it belongs in the Android forums since it isn't software/programming related.
** pps. can't link to the android brading url!
lol man i have no idea, but who cares if u use the android word in a topic, just use it!.xD
Google isn't going to care what you call your blog. Don't bother with the TM. The branding is mainly in regards to commercial use, not free and fair use.

How should I start? Android dev.

First, I know there are some other topics out there asking the same exact thing, but I think my situation is kinda different.
So, want to learn how to develop for Android. Building custom ROMs, Android apps, tweaks, etc. But my actual knowledge is only user lever. I only know what a android user should know (flash ROMs, root, etc). Zero dev knowledge. Nothing.
I want to know with what should I start to learn to do Android dev. Nothing like: 1 hour and you're the best dev out there. I know it takes time. But I want to focus on Android.
So, what do you have to say?
In very general terms it would be to pick one of your favorite roms for your phone, pull it apart and then put it back together until you understand what is going on.
In more "specific" (though this is frankly scratching the surface) terms, you would first spend hours finding out how to back up your phone including the AAA key, the meid and so forth as well as other software compatible with your phone to restore it. As frankly since you're likely using your phone to test, you'll have more than one occasion it will be soft bricked.
Thereafter you would learn more in regards to development tools, in specific over at developer.android.com. Read the dev guide and so on.
Third, decide how you want to implement a unix/linux test environment, unless you're already on linux.
And forth you'd look at your favorite rom developer's build from their development site (the name of the domain escapes me) pull it apart and try to analyze the details.
Last but not least you'd FOLLOW new developments with android and the phone as well as learn to adjust to any new firmware that comes out from the manufacturer.
I'm in the process of learning how to develop myself but I've already discovered a lot more with the phone's underlying structure. That said, a lot of the answers are found in bits and pieces on this forum. But when you start to learn and ask specific questions like "what partition is the system mounted on for a Samsung Galaxy Ace" you'll begin to understand the file structure and then underlying software involved.
This was very helpful. I'm glad to see there are helpful people here that aren't going to talk down to a "new user" and I was also wondering how I could view files on windows 7. For example the structure of apk files or any of the others that say no program found to open this file
For example I want to begin by changing the boot screen from the solar flare looking Android boot screen to scrolling tiles or something of the sort then back can some explain that and I'm sure I can gain quite an understanding on the process that way

If you want to do programming you should start with the Android SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
An apk file is actually a zip file.
If you want to get an idea of all the stuff that is in there, just rename it to .zip and open with your favorite utility.
The contents of this archive file are also in binary form and compressed.
To get down to the lowest level you need to use something like apktool: http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/
Much obliged I'll do that. Any Intel on boot.img

Build.Prop Tweak List

Hi, I was wondering if there was a list of HTC One S (Ville) Build.Prop tweaks. I did some searching and saw some lists in other forums, but I wasn't sure if the build.prop was the same for all devices, I guess I'm assuming not as some organizations are totalitarian and such.
In any case, I think we should create a list of build.prop tweaks specifically for the One S that are very effective, saying what the tweak changes and how it effects the device, also what other settings you can give it and what those effects do. Maybe I'm thinking of to much information, but I think a lot of people would be interested in the other information as well.
Maybe I just don't know enough about the build.prop file yet, but if someone could give me any links about more information on it that would be great. Or if anyone has a link to a list already like this that would be great as well. Sorry if I'm being a noob, but I've done quite a bit of searching and haven't found anything yet.
Thanks in advanced for any posts,
Cobra
It doesn't matter which phone, android is android.
But everyone uses other build.prop edit's, there are no original one's..
Thanks for that information.
So if there aren't any original ones, are there possibly ones that work well specifically for the One S? I know the Fast.Dormancy one is supposed to be effective for some carriers. And though, this may be a setting that could be effective for many devices, does it not make sense to maybe start a thread or some sort of page listing all the settings that effect this device in particular in certain ways and which carriers they work effectively on?
I ask these questions because, yes I am a newb and I feel like these things could be helpful to other noobs. it's almost as if I'm trying to learn some sort of ITIL based thing I guess. I guess to me it just seems effective to have a list of things that can help make your device work more effectively. For instance, have one page, say the wiki, linking to different things to help you setup your phone how you want it, and to make it so it will work as effectively as you want it for yourself.
Now I realize that the Wiki currently has things such as how to unlock, root, flash roms, lists of roms, etc. But, it doesn't really say, "Hey, here are a list of things you can do to make your phone more efficient without having to flash a new ROM, and here are ways you can make your own ROM, here are some paths to certain things specific to this phone.
I know the Wiki is new, but I guess what I'm saying is if nobody else is working on this stuff, can someone give me a hand in finding all this information so I can start adding it to the Wiki?

[Q] Noob trying to become a dev.

This thread may be pointless but I don't care. I can't find a straight general answer.
I am kind of new to Android modding but have ok skills with coding and decent skills with Linux (I know how to survive in a shell).
What are good code examples or what are the best methods(exploits) used to privilege escalate a shell?
Do I need to find a hole in the Linux kernel or try to hijack an active process running as root?
What is needed to crack the bootloader? I know I'm asking a lot and most of my terms used may be wrong but I find it hard to take that next step. Would I find answers by reading an Android developers book?
Please, where do I start???
There are many options in the development criteria, the two main consist of OS Development (Roms) and Application Development.
Judging by what you're stating, I think you're trying to work towards OS Development? Correct me if I'm wrong.
I know I'm being a bit cheap by not typing out everything needed, as I will have to put some time into that... But the official CyanogenMod wiki shows you how to set up a building environment on Mac, Windows and Linux.
From there they explain in detail on what shell commands you must use to run exploits and such. They also explain what specific components and files do and how you can modify and update them from what I have previously seen. The site also shows you how to build a ROM for your device itself, using the CyanogenMod source of course, the method applies to all source to be honest.
Here's a link to the website - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Main_Page
If this wasn't what you were asking for let me know so I can explain furthermore.
Krish.
