Hello guys, I am 100% new to Android and I was wondering if I ever need to update from 5.0.2. Because I successfully rooted my device but I tripped Knox. But I don't care because I want the freedom of my android and I am quite frankly not worried about the warranty being void. Someone at Best Buy told me that if I don't update my android version eventually the apps stop working with the version I am on. I didn't flash a rom or anything like that but my device status is custom. So I am wondering if I am able to stay on 5.0.2 forever without ever having to update. Because the guy at best buy said that some apps will stop working, I tried to do a software update through about device but it said that the system has been modified. So what would you guys on the xda forum recommend me to do?
Thanks

Firstly, welcome to Android !
As far as updating goes, you would have to go a few generations of Android software versions for apps to no longer be compatible with 5.x.x. 6.0 hasn't been released yet so I'd say you gave 3ish years before that starts effecting anything.
With that being said, there really is no reason not to update. If you take a look at these forums you can find a lot of great 5.1.1 roms that will increase your device performance. As well, you can upgrade the device via computer with Samsung smartswitch or odin.

Thanks so much, and by the way 3 years is long enough for me to get a new device anyways. Thanks

I looked up 6.0 and it said it will launch this year so what is going to happen if I don't update
Sent from my SM-G920W8 using XDA Free mobile app
Nothing.. lol. But if I were you I would upgrade, because the power and performance of your device will only increase.
If I were you, I would take a look at the development section and flash a custom rom, that is based on 5.1.1, and you will see the performance increase.
And don't worry you can root the 5.1.1 ROM (Majority if not all of the custom roms are already pre-rooted).
Same story will happen with the 6.0 release..
Trust me, you will love your phone even more.
---------- Post added at 04:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------
And you cant update over the OTA (If your phone gives u the update, as you are rooted) so you can't update it direct over the phone OTA - Ove the air
I didn't know you could flash a custom ROM that has an Android version higher than your stock room

But 2.3.3 isn't the latest update. Shouldn't the phone be giving me notifications to update to the latest available version? like 2.3.6 maybe?
Simply root your phone and choose any rom you like. No need to wait for an update.
I bought my phone 26the December, I kept checking for update never got one then I read post it will only update to latest one since they have stopped it temporary u will either have to root/ do it manually or just wait
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
The update strategy of google is really confusing :
No dates, no indication, no explanations why they stopped OTA. The most surprising thing to me is : why stopping 2.3.6 OTA while the problem is about the 4.0.3 version?
Its for a couple of days m8 most people would be hacked of if they had to update there fine every to minutes

easiest solution, and you dont have to wait on anybody.. update manually. there are links to all the android versions, available to the nexus s, posted here in xda. and you dont need root to update an official stock rom with an official stock rom.

You mean, i doswnload official OTA ICS and flash via recovery, no need to unlock a bootloader?
Sent from my GT-I5800
No need to unlock bootloader if you're flashing stock ROM
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
If you want to go stock(no root, no unlocked bootloader, no custom recovery) wouldn't recommend updating to ICS OTA, since there is that battery drain bug, that has yet to be fixed.
Also downgrading back to GB is quite tricky, if not imposible without unlocking the phone.
there's no bug, they just paused it, you can download it from here and just rename it and flash through the stock recovery!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
But why to flash if there is a battery bug for most of people. You got to be lucky.

I haven't had a problem

My question is, HOW DO I KNOW IF MY OTA UPDATE IS STILL WORKING OR NOT? I've searched for answers for like days. I think maybe its time to ask for answers here.

if you've just got a rooted stock then when you do ota you lose root access, if you got a custom rom forget about ota altogether, rooted users are supposed to update their firmware/rom manually through custom recovery or flashing software(such as odin) always keep a couple backups around, be it nandroid or titanium bakups, now there are some apps out there that say they'll let you keep root after ota but i do not know how well they work, if you've just got a rooted stock, go back to stock, update to latest version, enable usb debugging, and use kingo on your pc(google it) for hassle free 2 second rooting process that works on just about any android device, and wouldnt take mor ethan 2 seconds to do again if you lose root after OTA next time

no you cant have a OTA update because youre running a custom rom.. mostly only stock rom and kernels can run OTA.

well if you just rooted, no custom rom, then the software that handles OTA must still be there, however, depending the method you used, the OTA might not work anymore or even be disabled on purpose so that you do not lose root upon update, simply, backup, flash back to a regular stock, then use kingo, then do an OTA after root to check if it works, then once you're certain your phone works fine and has OTA, restore your apps, data, contacts, and settings from your backup(make sure you backed all those up of course) as well as your sdcard and/or internal memory files, back those up too since depending on what flashing software you use or how you **** up(it's normal we all do it ) you may delete its contents, and there you should have a rooted stock phone that has OTA and you can root back after rly quick and easy.....

Never mind completely over ya head. Thanks I know you all where trying to be helpful. But I was talking about kk that Samsung sends to my device not a Canadian version. I have had this for a year and there is not one stable rom. I want the kk that belongs on the tablet. Like I said nexus next time. I guess the wifi American one will be the last one. Lol
I am happy to see kk geting close. And even happier to have a group of friends that are giving 200% time to provide us what Samsung/Intel should have.
Never the less It is true Samsung and [email protected]#$%Ing Intel garbage had screw us all by no releasing a full Open Source than can be use to create CianogenMod or aosp. To make it worst Googles and Samsung new policies while implementing new updates is geting to a untolerated limit!
I too think this is the last device I purchase without first waiting for others report. Samsung lost my thrust.
I can't really see your point. As you know, the stock roms are bloated, slow and sometimes more unstable than the modded ones. As for the release for Kit Kat - Samsung seems to not really care for it's older devices, seeing how many more tabs they produced. Kinda strange to go out with a new version with the product every next year. To be honest, I think they should at least expand the lifespan of these tablets, It's not like they are really cheap or something. As for the hardware part of things,I think you should know that the 10.1 version is actually really different compared to the other two Galaxy Tab 3s, thus either making the release process slower since there are newer models on which they focus more. We should all be thankful that there are ambitious developers here and I'd even like to thank all of them for their hard work. For now - you should stick and help for the development rather than just wait. I hope I don't sound insulting or anything. I think that any help (bug reports, etc) would be appreciated.

Oh bro I am also talking about that only . See, there are different regions of every tablet. You must not be living in Canada. This tab has got 4.4 kk but In canada & not In your country. So , you will not be able to download kk by going to software update . You will have to download it from sammobile & flash it manually via odin . Please ubderstand this. I and a lot of other people are running Kitkat .

And additionally it is a very easy process to install the Canada version with Odin.
I am from Germany, have installed the Rom and so far no problems.
But for my opinion not a lot of differences to the former Rom.

i believe any version will contain the same language support set, also version specificity only comes into play
with respect to cellular/gsm variants. for wifi only models it really doesn't matter. else there are still "after market"
methods for sorting out issues.

When I got this tablet I thought Yes since I have been flashing roms on my phone for years here is something else I can flash roms on and have fun. Boy I was wrong I know they have a couple of stock roms but they ran worse than my stock rom. So I unrooted and said I will wait for Samsung to update my tablet to kk. I have been waiting and waiting it's just a big let down. But you live and learn my phone is faster than my tablet so basically all I use my tablet for is chrome cast. To be honest with you I don't even know if I will get another tablet for what. It's easier to just grab my phone. That's why I love big phones.
Just curious, I understand going back to stock, but why unroot? How can you stand all that bloatware?

I think people should just run the latest that's available, or get a new phone. A Moto E is 3 times the phone the Infuse is, and can be had for $30 if you buy it at the right time. Plus it runs Lollipop out of the box. Methinks trying to run 5.0 on a 4 yr old device is near impossible.

Is there a way to turn off the auto updates. I searched all the settings and did not see the option to do so. Or maybe an mod/app etc...
Anything short of turning wifi off after every use will get the update pushed onto the tablet and disabling the root.
Thanks!
