Android 5.1.1 OTA on rooted device without losing data - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have Nexus 5 Android version 5.1 (LMY47I), rooted, unlocked bootloader and TWRP.
As we all know OTA doesn't work with rooted devices...
Is there a way to update to Android 5.1.1 flashing the OTA zip file without losing data (apps data, pics, vids, etc) ?
By the way which should be the right file? LMY48B or LMY48I ?
Whats the difference?
Thank you.

Many say that we shouldn't use toolkits, but Nexus Root Toolkit has the option to flash new version without wiping. I have used it and everything has worked perfectly. But I suspect a clean install is always safer.

[Q] How do I upgrade my firmware now that I'm rooted?

Hey all.
I have an Australian SM-G920I on Telstra and have recently rooted using the CF Auto Root method (successfully). I tried flashing TWRP 2.8.6.0 the other day and it wouldn't work. Browsing some threads on here and @Hero mentioned he managed to get TWRP to work once he updated the firmware. However, I can't use the OTA update method as it says that I've modified my OS in an unauthorised way.
Help?
Like in the case of the nexus 6, with lollipop some changes were introduced to the ota checklist procedure. If ANY system files or recovery are modified the ota will fail.
Nothing short of using Odin to go back to 100 %stock will help you. ( and that's assuming Knox plays no role in the ota)

Odin is your only bet to update firmware if you're rooted. The good thing is you can usually update radio (which imo is the most important thing) separately via Odin without having to flash the entire package.
I downloaded this firmware https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934555710
How do I go about flashing it? I've unzipped the files onto my computer but can't find the .tar file to flash with Odin.
Hi! Guys I'm using the tmobile Gs6 do I need to update my firmware? If yes which firmware do I want to update it too. Thanks

[Q] Error with OTA updata to 5.1.1 : Kindly advise

I am on Android 5.1.
Stock with stock recovery
Root with CF-Auto (unlocked bootloader)
No other modifications of any kind.
I am unable to update with the OTA 5.1.1 (from 5.1). When the phone is rebooted while trying to do the install. I just get an ERROR (with an android lying down picture). Then the phone takes a while before it restarts back to the previous setup. I've tried formatting cache, but to no avail.
I was able to update to Android 5.1 from 4.4 (4.4 to 5.0 and then 5.0 to 5.1) by just doing an OTA update and then using CF-Auto Root to root.
Can someone please help? I know the easiest way would be to wipe the device and flash everything. But I don't want to lose all data.
Is there any way to apply the 5.1.1 update without wiping the device?
Thanks so much in advance.

[Question] Is there a way to convert custom revocery files into flashable odin files?

Hi,
I have a Note edge N915W8 which i updated to 5.1.1 the moment it became available on Sammobile (big mistake). as everyone knows, i lost root in the process. And no root availble at this time.
Important history of the phone:
I acquired the device from a friend that had rooted it when it was in its original stock 4..4.4 config. He then tried to flash a custom rom which ended up in a bootloop which he was unable to recover from because there wasn't a stock rom available at the time. Long story short, I ended up with a bootlooped Note Edge and after a week i managed to acquire someones backup zip from XDA -- which i then used to free my device from the loop and function properly with root.
I got too eager and flashed the 5.1.1 without reading up on it and lost root.
So, i was hoping there would be a way or method that i could use that would allow me to use that same custom recovery backup of 4.4.4, only this time be able to flash it through odin on my stock 5.1.1
Any advice would help.
Thanks
From what I know once you take 5.1 update you cant backroll to 4.4.4.
BOOTLOADER was patch'd BY the GREATS to throw another wrech in our plans!
And also I do blv there is ROOT for 5.1 but it trips knox & you have to install twrp thru Odin then flash SUPERSU & BEASTMODE Kernel that allows root and then take root

Just got a Note Edge... few quick questions...

Hi All,
I didn't want to update to the Note 5 so i got the Edge instead as it supported the SD card, anyway a few quick questions...
1) It came preloaded with stock apps and KitKat SO should i upgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1 ?
2) Doing a Nandroid of KitKat will ensure I can revert to this even after the Lollipop upgrade?
3) Any way to root or install a custom recovery withou tripping knox?
4) Any way of installing Xpossed on 5.1.1
5) Best ROM that supports tons of modifications?
Anyone?
bump...
...
I'll try and answer this the best I can:
1) It came preloaded with stock apps and KitKat SO should i upgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1 ?
-Depends on your preference, I like the new 5.1.1 a lot.
2) Doing a Nandroid of KitKat will ensure I can revert to this even after the Lollipop upgrade?
-Not sure about this one but I think you can't go back after upgrading to 5.1.1
3) Any way to root or install a custom recovery withou tripping knox?
-No
4) Any way of installing Xpossed on 5.1.1
-Don't think there is root for 5.1.1 yet.. (Don't know for sure, don't need root on this phone)
5) Best ROM that supports tons of modifications?
-As said above, I didn't root it, kept it stock. Look around in the development forum, there aren't many...
Thanks for your reply, now to find out the rest...
In order to get root just flash twrp recovery with auto reboot ticked off. Then flash boot.img from Micky's 5.1.1 ROM within twrp recovery. Just press images button in twrp and the boot option after that in order to be able to flash image files. Then flash beta super su 2.49.
If you run into problems with WiFi not remembered after reboot or security issues there are solutions for that.

As long as you root on kitkat and have a Nandroid you should be able to go back as long as you don't upgrade the bootloader. Samsung doesn't allow the downgrade of bootloader anymore. Now with 5.0 and up and I don't know if you have to flash the bootloader. You'd be better off to look in the device specific thread for your variant and read if you have to upgrade the bootloader or anything to go from kitkat to lollipop. Exposed is already working on 5.1.1. And for what rom to use depends on the variant you have.
For SM-N915G i was able to rollback to kitkat coming from 5.0, and im so glad i did it.Battery life improved so much and its smoother than lollipop. This is the first time i downgraded after having a couple of samsung devices.Thats how bad the battery life i had on my edge.Il probably be staying for awhile on KitKat

As of today the phone upgraded by itself to 5.0.1... When i cancelled the update it rebooted into recovery and now its too late to go back to kit kat as i didn't do a nandroid yet...
Anyway im not fussed, you mentioned that xposed is now available on 5.1. 1 ?please let me know which files to download to get it working... And hopefully a link?

How should I upgrade the J700P (boost) to keep root?

There is a newer stock rom available J700PVPU1APH4 (region BST) than what I have installed. I'm rooted now (using the chainfire with the corrupt recovery) and running TWRP.
Can anyone provide a link to the rom that does not require logging in and a reliable set of instructions to upgrade to this new stock without losing data, root or TWRP?
It's impossible. Flashing it will overwrite everything. You could try dirty flashing a ROM based on the new update, but the only one available is my own. Dirty flash that; it's based on the newest update.
EDIT: after some thinking, I'm wrong. It's impossible, my dude.
I just moved from 3 to 4 gave up root in the process because i felt i wasnt gaining anything from having root. I have the files necessary to reflash aph3 and then you should be able to upgrade and reroot but i have not verified this. I found the files through a simple google search.
