any free s-off and rooting for verizon one m8 on lollipop? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

just wondering but is there going to be any free s-off and root for our verizon one m8 on lollipop? I would pay the 25$ for the sunshine way but i dont have that money.

Not likely. Sunshine doesn't support lollipop for vzw yet because root isn't stable for general release. Some have had success with kingroot and there is a thread on that. Save your pennies and support Jcase and Beaups.

5.0.1 stock rootable/able to unlock bootloader?

I've read mixed things about unlocking the bootloader of my VZW One M8 5.0.1 that's completely stock. Is the bootloader unlockable? Can't I just use the process on htcdev.com?

HTCdev has never worked for htc m8 VZW devices. You're stuck locked for now until (hopefully) sunshine is updated for VZW M8s on 5.01

Fixed your above post. I still have multiple htc devices on vzw that I still have the HTC dev unlock token for. The most recent being my vzw htc one m7. Idiots forgot to block it on launch day.

THanks, I should have specified the M8. I do remember a few M7s slipping through right after release that could be unlocked.
In any event anyone thinking they can go that route with an M8 it is a dead end.
Still no Sunshine in my M8
Hi guys, 8 months later and I guess there's still no chance of rooting an Android 5.0.1 VZN HTC M8? I have tried everything so far and as this post concludes, the HTCDev tool won't unlock the phone and Sunshine requests a pre-rooted phone. Any work arounds out there? I'm trying to wipe and install a stock HTC rom and bin the VZN.

Yes there's been a method that works. Find my downgrade thread in the general section. After downgrading use kingroot to get root and then sunshine to s-off.
PS come out from under your rock sooner than 8 months !

New here :)

So I traded my LG g2 for a Verizon HTC One m8 so far I love it. The phone was on the official lollipop update sadly. I know as of now I am stuck. But will I always be stuck or is there a root exploit in the makings?

Nothing is a given but the team that is likely working on this has a good track record with HTC devices, so it is likely just a matter of time.
Thanks for the reply! Just waiting patiently. Once sunshine releases an update will it root my phone along with s-off or will a seperate root exploit need to be found first?
Currently, sunshine temproots your phone to get s-off, but not sure how it will be done with 5.0. I've heard lollipop is going to be more difficult to root.

Which one should i go for?

So guys i am thinking of exchanging my galaxy s5 with M8 and i have a potential seller. He has two phones 1) M8 verizon 32gb brand new condition running 5x 2) M8 non carrier 16 gb version with some scratches. Kindly help me out with the following questions.
My question is that which version should i buy ? are there any additional bootloader kind of restrictions on the verizon version?
i have also heard that if a M8 is running 5x rom there is no way to achieve s-off without paying $25 dollars?
Can i root and install custom rom with s-on and bootloader unlocked?
The answer for your first question is easy. Is your carrier Verizon? If yes, you need the Verizon phone. If not, its best to get the other one. Verizon device can't be modified without sunshine or javacard. The other device you can unlock via htcdev and root/flash roms/etc.

does it mean that Non branded M8 CAN achieve s-off without sunshine or any other tools?

The only public tool I'm aware of for s-off on the M8 is SunShine. But you can unlock the bootloader (on the non-verizon model) still with htcdev.

S-off has been achieved on the Verizon model for lollipop, so if that's your carrier you can get that phone with no worries. It takes some effort to get kingroot working and you do have to pay for sunshine though. If you aren't on Verizon the carrier independent version is easier to work with for custom roms.

Verizon HTC One M8 Downgrade to 4.4.4?

Hi, I've purchased a Verizon One M8 and love it thus far, but I was really hoping to root and install roms and kernels on this bad boy! Now I don't currently have the cash to purchase the $25 Root and S-Off Sunshine tool, and was wondering if downgrading back to 4.4.4 would allow me to gain root and a custom recovery (for free mebe?); if it's even possible. I'm currently running on 5.0.1. Thanks a ton, help would be much appreciated!

You would need to be S-OFF to downgrade, and even then only way is SunShine. Or a JavaCard of course. Free S-OFF no longer is an option and I'm thankful we have developers still providing us a service, and at a fair price IMO.
You cannot downgrade while S-On. Except from the last LP firmware version .9 to the pre-stagefright .5 which you need for Sunshine.
Dottat has a RUU for that.
So save up your pennies, skip a few trips to *$ and you can afford Sunshine in no time.
Hey guys, I really appreciate the help. Thanks a ton, I think I'm actually willing to spend a little extra money on this little powerhouse now.

why not use the sunshine support tab and see if they will support your device?

Actually i did.
Sunshine, the popular bootloader unlock and S-Off tool for HTC and Motorola devices has just been updated to version 3.1.22. This update brings support for Android 6.0 Marshmallow as well as two new devices. Sunshine will now work on the HTC One A9 and the HTC Desire 626s smartphones.
Quoted from a post on this forum actually.

i really dont know anything about this to help further. sorry
you may have to wait and see if they add your device, or contact them and offer to help get your device added if they need any files or testers.
maybe they will give you a free copy if they ask for your help in testing or whatever. Justin is a reasonable guy, i have chatted with him a few times.
I chatted with sunshine they said the firmware I have just isn't supported yet. I guess wait for devs to do their thing
