5.0.1 stock rootable/able to unlock bootloader? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I've read mixed things about unlocking the bootloader of my VZW One M8 5.0.1 that's completely stock. Is the bootloader unlockable? Can't I just use the process on htcdev.com?

HTCdev has never worked for htc m8 VZW devices. You're stuck locked for now until (hopefully) sunshine is updated for VZW M8s on 5.01

Fixed your above post. I still have multiple htc devices on vzw that I still have the HTC dev unlock token for. The most recent being my vzw htc one m7. Idiots forgot to block it on launch day.

THanks, I should have specified the M8. I do remember a few M7s slipping through right after release that could be unlocked.
In any event anyone thinking they can go that route with an M8 it is a dead end.

Still no Sunshine in my M8
Hi guys, 8 months later and I guess there's still no chance of rooting an Android 5.0.1 VZN HTC M8? I have tried everything so far and as this post concludes, the HTCDev tool won't unlock the phone and Sunshine requests a pre-rooted phone. Any work arounds out there? I'm trying to wipe and install a stock HTC rom and bin the VZN.

Yes there's been a method that works. Find my downgrade thread in the general section. After downgrading use kingroot to get root and then sunshine to s-off.
PS come out from under your rock sooner than 8 months !

noob question : can I flash *any* ROMs on 2.20 ?

hi guys,
I recently bought an AT&T One X w/ 2.20 firmware.
just wanted to know if I can flash any ROMs on the 2.20 firmware ? I'm a little confused between what is possible and what is not.
If I can flash ROMs, then I possibly dont want to root/unlock. If not, Can I unlock the 2.20 firmware using HTC-Dev (warranty voided) ? I cant seem to find One X in the dropdown at http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
Could somebody help ?

Nope. You can enjoy the phone as stock and that's all. No root, no custom roms

Simple, you can't do jack if your phone was shipped with 2.20.
Since AT&T is not allowing the bootloader to be unlocked by HTCDev.com. The workaround was to change the CID to SuperCID and fool the system, but root is needed to do that.
So you are out of luck until either a root is found for 2.20, or AT&T allows the bootloader to be unlocked. Or if S-Off is achieved.
OK. I got confused because there were all these articles that talked about unlocking the bootloader using HTCDev.
Nothing i didnt expect - any ideas on when HTC will allow bootloader unlock? Im assuming that the launch of One X+ makes this old enough to be let free

Hard to say, its all about what AT&T wants. All other carriers are bootloader unlockable out of the box. Its not based on any set policy, and AT&T has not made any announcement on when (if ever) they will allow it to be unlocked. They did a similar thing with the HTC Vivid. But allowed it to be unlocked about 3 months after the phone was released. That time period has long come and gone (One X was released in early May).

Currently you cannot S-Off and unlock the VZW M8 on Lollipop. When, and if, it happens the likely method will be Sunshine from therootninja, which is a $25 service.

[Q] About to buy the M8!

Hey guys, so It's already time to upgrade from my G2. M8... Great choise, isn't it?
Kay so, the guy who's gonna sell me it has the Verizon version, and i saw some posts that you can't root / Unlock bootloader / etc ? Is there other ways? I might get the phone but I'd miss root at least.
If the answer is no, which variant should I get? (I say variant because Carrier is the same thing for me because I live in El Salvador, so)
If you are on or up to 4.4.4 then you are lucky. If you are on above that (Lp) then there is still not Unlock bootloader option.
Even if you are on LP it won't be a problem ONLY if you buying a used or new s-off device.About the carrier,if your carrier is veriozn which is cdma then this is the best variant.
Yes,i think other carriers do not have that bootloader unlocking problem (you can unlock bootloader via HTC Dev). This is verizon prob.

Bud,we only need to unlock our Bootloder & s-off,because after after s-off we can flash custom recovery & supersu.zip file to gain permanent root.

New here :)

So I traded my LG g2 for a Verizon HTC One m8 so far I love it. The phone was on the official lollipop update sadly. I know as of now I am stuck. But will I always be stuck or is there a root exploit in the makings?

Nothing is a given but the team that is likely working on this has a good track record with HTC devices, so it is likely just a matter of time.
Thanks for the reply! Just waiting patiently. Once sunshine releases an update will it root my phone along with s-off or will a seperate root exploit need to be found first?
Currently, sunshine temproots your phone to get s-off, but not sure how it will be done with 5.0. I've heard lollipop is going to be more difficult to root.

Unlocked bootloader suspected, or no?

Have been a long time loyalist to LG phones over the past 4 years but am getting frustrated at the trend of bootloader locks with at&t handsets. I originally owned the G1 Dream and then the HTC Desire HD from HTC back in their heyday... Both were great phones to tinker with for the rom enthusiast. I have not bought an HTC phone since, because I could not trust their flippant camera choices. I ordered the LG G6 and sold it for the t mobile model, only to discover it may be fully locked down for a while, even with the t mobile model (fastboot commands stripped from the handset for some reason).
Guess I'm looking for a next gen phone with a killer camera and ability to flash to stock Android roms when they're available. Who here knows if I can expect this phone to be fully available for bootloader unlock to TWRP and rom support? If not, I just may end up selling my phone and wait for the Pixel 2 to be released otherwise.

Bootloader unlock with HTCDev will definitely be available (except for some carrier variants). SunShine support for gaining S-Off might or might not materialize.

I agree its almost a given its gonna happen. Its just HTC's thing.
From HTC's website http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
"The GSM Unlocked HTC U11 is the same great device as any HTC smartphone, but without unnecessary pre-loads or SIM restrictions. You'll experience more phone freedom than ever!
The GSM Unlocked edition on HTC.com allows you to pop in an activated SIM from the carrier of your choice* and change carriers at will, or to unlock the bootloader without voiding your warranty.
Your HTC warranty even covers bootloader unlocking on the HTC U11!
For more bootloader unlocking info, visit www.htcdev.com"
Also, there's been a working build of TWRP for this device for almost 2 months, so that shouldn't be a concern either .
Unfortunately you're going to have to find someone else to maintain it, though, since I can't afford to buy a U11.

Of course that's wrong.

I still wonder... Is there Unlocked and Unlocked ?
Unlocked to put any SIM card you want, that's granted.
But, is there models that are bootloader unlocked out of the box ?

There are SIM-locked versions of U11 that are sold by carriers, Sprint for sure and maybe some EMEA carrier variants.
No version will be bootloader unlocked out of the box, but all (including carrier ones) will be bootloader unlockable through HTCDev. Usually, only Verizon / EE have their handsets blacklisted from HTCDev, but Verizon doesn't have its own version of U11, not sure about EE.

If this is real the bootloader is unlocked and S-off.

No there's no chance to brick using HTC Dev to unlock. Just choose the "All other supported models" option at the bottom of the list.
