Best chance of getting root - Stick with OF1 or take the update to OG5? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

Basically I decided it was time to root about 2 days after I took the update to OF1 and was very frustrated to realize that I had basically shot myself in the foot. With the new update being available now, I'm left debating what the best course of action is. Should I take the new update with whatever features / additional security that it implements in the hope that there is an exploit in it, or should I stick with the current locked down version in the hopes that an exploit will be found.
Advice would be appreciated from someone with more understanding than me...

I would think if any dev is going to work on root for the VZW S6, it would be for OG5. OF1 is a relatively minor 5.0.2 update, whereas OG5 is 5.1.1.

I guess that makes sense.. didn't realize this was a big update and figured it was another security holes patch

[Q] How do we prep for 4.3 on Verizon?

Verizon is teasing an October OTA update to 4.3 for our Galaxy S3s. I am on rooted and unlocked, stock 4.1.2, VRBMB1 with TWRP 2.6.3.0. I am hoping to see a rooted, unlocked version available here shortly after the 4.3 OTA releases. I think i am not the only one in this boat. Can someone outline the steps I would need to either, 1.) accept the OTA, or 2.) flash a pre-rooted version, if and when it appears here? Thanks

I'd recommend finding a comfortable place to sit and wait because you will probably be there a looong time.

Link to these teasers please?
Also, the update (if said update exists) could potentially lock down the bootloader in similar fashion to the S4 or Note II so unfortunately outlining steps to reroot and unlock won't help you in the event this occurs. The existing exploits definitely support the existing firmware but saying anything more would be irresponsible.

That's sound advice there. I'm not OTAing nothing until the devs say it's okay or they make a flashable zip.

Ahh, there's no mention of an update specifically for Verizon. When OEMs state an update for phone models and do no specify the exact ones, they always mean their international variants. International varants are not tied to carriers and therefore do not need to go through a certification process before being pushed to handsets. If there's an ota coming at all for any US variant, it would't be on Verizon for another few months. It would foreseeably go T-Mobile/Sprint then AT&T/Verizon a month or two later.
Also, any site that has as many grammatical or syntax errors for sentence structure should not be viewed as a reliable source. Try here for example, the info is more clearly detailed and presented.
Yeah wouldn't hold my breathe, If Samsung release in Oct the soonest verizon could/would roll anything out would be jan/feb and pretty sure looking at past performance from verizon the s3 will reach end of life around the same time. meaning no update
I am reaping the benefit of a lot of generous, and smart, people who have kept my Moto Xoom alive and kicking way past what most would consider it's end of life. One of the reasons I chose the S3 was because of the large numbers that were sold. I assumed that the community support would outstrip any "official" support from either Samsung or Verizon. What are chances that someone will cobble together a great 4.3 ROM for the i535, after the release of 4.3 by Samsung?

Normally I'd agree with you whole heartedly but as PrDog stated they want us to buy that watch. So it just might be sooner than we think.

For reasons beyond my knowledge level, ports from international versions of the S3 don't get done for the VZW, ATT, and so on variants of the S3. I know the non-US models have a different CPU (and chipset ?) so that could be the reason. Proprietary drivers and libraries that hook into the kernel are NOT "free" or open-source. It's not as simple as just re-compiling the Samsung-released kernel as important pieces of the puzzle are missing and it won't work without those pieces....

Thinking of getting G3 coming from S4, is the current G3 stock still able to use roms

So as some of you may know the S4 had it's exploit fixed and since then we haven't been able to get away from Touchwiz based roms.
Before I go get the G3 I just wanted to be 100% clear that even the latest firmware hasn't fixed Bump, and I will be able to do other AOSP roms. From my quick research it seems like it's fine, but I only have 20 minutes left to get it friday instead of monday, so I figured I would just ask to be safe.

AT&T released firmware Build number: KVT49L.D85010f to patch root exploit. Read this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-lg-g3/general/d850-software-update-t2937550
When Android Lollipop rolls out to G3 in the near future, rooting will be harder to accomplish. Same for other brands.

But that is recent enough that a phone bought today will not come with it out of the box, so I'm not worried about that.
And in theory I can just flash a bumped lollipop build later anyway right?
I just want to make sure it's not in the same current state as the S4 where you have to have touchwiz and match roms to bootloader version and what not.
I know there isn't too many roms yet with bump being fairly new, but as long as I stay on the current build I should be fine going forward no?
And I guess on that note, the stock rom isn't nearly as bad touchwiz is it?

Cool, I went for it, thanks for the quick clarifications. I can read all about everything now while I impatiently wait for UPS friday.
with LG phones you can always downgrade the software to a version where you can root.
I am sure there will be a way to get official lollipop while keeping custom recovery and root.
Once again, LG locked the door but forgot to close it before locking like what they did on the G2. So we were still able to upgrade while keeping custom recovery and root by mixing and matching partitions from upgrade and previous versions.

Update yesterday

Does anybody know what the update was about yesterday? I don't seem to notice anything different...was to fix that leak?

Wonder if it was to fix the stagefright vulnerability? I downloaded 3 apps to check for that 2 said I wasn't vulnerable and the 3rd said I still was lol so I'm not sure if I am still or not.

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this so please forgive my ignorance.
I've been looking everywhere for a root solution for my Gal S6 Edge + (ATT) and haven't even found people complaining they cant find anything for my build.
I'm trying to find a compatible root that wont disable or trip KNOX or brick my phone due to ATT iron grip.
Can anyone point me in the right direction; I've been to all the normal places one would look.
Is it so that there isn't a root solution out yet?
I'm on
5.1.1
Kernal Verion 3.10.61-5554916 / Sun Aug 30
Build: LMY47X
Baseband: G928AuCU1A0H5
KNOX 2.5
I can't be the only one with this phone who wants to root; I just want verification that there isn't anything out yet.
I can't stand the ATT apps that auto update even when I tell them not too, I want control of my OWN phone I paid in full for.
Thanks again

There is no root available for our G928A (S6 Edge+) device. With the new update patching the Stagefright exploit, I highly doubt that there will be root for Edge+ on AT&T. Furthermore, if you can't find root chances are that there is no root. You're not the only one that wants root, we all want root for our devices. You can either wait for a solution to come about, deal without root, and/or return the phone and get a phone that has root access.
Thank you for the clarification.
I'll have to wait and keep my fingers crossed.
It's great to buy your own devices and still be controlled by your carrier isn't it..

Should I OTA update? Software info inside

I suppose it's only been about a couple months since I rolled back to factory, unrooted then rooted again, flashed TWRP and did another Debloat session with this phone so my question is from
5.0.1 Android
Kernel 3.4.0
Build LRX21Y
Soft D850211
Should I bother doing all this again to accept the OTA? Of all the things I've learned about phones I've never learned how to properly evaluate an update so if anyone can point me in the right direction as to maybe some reading material I'd appreciate that too You guys are numero uno.
I don't know of D850211. If you are on 21q, the OTA is 21r and is the patch for stagefright. However it seems some people are having issues with the 21r update so it is really up to you.

lg v10 downgrade from mm to lollipop

Ok so I got a lg v10 h900 it has already been updated to mm and I'm wondering if there's any way to go bk to lollipop
I am guessing you are trying to go back for root right? Well, you cannot go back. It will not work, and you will brick your device in the process. Don't worry, me and LGMono are working on getting root for MM right now, we are VERY close if this TOT is authentic...

Hey all! Good news! A 9-year-old bug called the "Dirty Cow" exploit still exists in the Linux/Android kernel can easily grant root on any Android phone!!! See the video below.
http://www.xda-developers.com/9-year...on-of-android/
So there's another bug to exploit for root and even possibly unlocking the bootloader! The bug has been fixed recently in Linux but hasn't been rolled into Android yet. If anyone can get this working on my AT&T LG V10 (running Marshmallow) I'll give a reward of $50! Plus you'll be my hero! Now get crackin!
