photo thumbnails - windows 7? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, for some time now no computer will display my photos thumbnails. Kind of annoying when trying to pick and choose which photos to pull off the phone.
Tried making sure thumbnail view is selected in windows.
Tried PTP and MPT mode.
Whats odd is the old photos will still display thumbnails but the new photos (last half or so) will not.
They display on the phone fine but through windows explorer no dice.
thanks

shameless bump..... nobody?

2. Settings > More > USB Utilities > Connect Storage to PC
If you're charging through USB it will tell you, "USB is connected. Remove the cable." So remove it and plug it back in again and then click the button which now says, "Turn on USB storage" then OK.
or Settings -> Wireless and network -> USB Utilities -> Connect storage to PC and connect it that way, then you'll get the icons.

Ive been through those first two links before posting, thanks tho
Im not quite understanding what your #2 option is saying. Are those settings on the phone or PC? Those sound like settings on a samsung phone with touchwiz not android itself. My only settings are MTP and PTP
this is something with the phone but its been doing it on my last two ROMs. half my pics do have thumbnails but the second later half do not.

Yes those steps should be done on your phone. I found it on other forums.
You could copy the folder on your PC then remove the unwanted pictures. No other ideas for Windows, sorry.

Me too. frustrating!

Mass Storage On Mac

So my mac wont recognize my devices internal or external memory card. Anyone else have any problems?
edit: started working for some reason.
Edit 2: I figured it out I had to install double twist and by default it enables auto mass storage mode with USB debugging enabled. You can not achieve this otherwise.
I have the same problem, and even have double twist installed. Still no luck, but I'm still looking. There have been several occurrences where Samsung devices of multiple types not communicating with OSX.
As the OP stated, I think you have to enable USB debugging as well. Did you do that?

goto settings, application, development, then usb debugging!
On the Captivate, prepare your phone by Settings > Applications > USB Settings > Ask On Connection. Also, Settings > Applications >> Development > USB Debugging needs to be turned on.
Then connect the USB cable to the Mac, and drag the notification bar on the phone. It'll say USB connected - choose that and then it'll ask to Mount. Once you mount the SD card(s), they'll be visible on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard).
At least, that's what I did. No need for doubletwist.

[Q] WM6.5 - USB Connection type menu gone?

Hello,
First off, I'm owning a Samsung Omnia Qwerty (B7610) and I have a problem...
I'm trying to create a backup of my contacts by using the Samsung PC Studio software. Whenever I connect my USB cable to my phone, I usually get a selection menu whether to select "PC Studio", "Mass Storage" or "Active Sync". However, this menu is gone. Whenever I plug the cable in, it just starts with Active Sync (or Mass Storage) as defined in the settings screen. However, these things won't coƶperate with the PC Studio software.
Is there any way to get this menu back when I connect my USB cable to my phone?
If you don't know what I'm asking about, here's a picture that somewhat looks like the menu I'm trying to get:
byteshift.net/scr000014.jpg or byteshift.net/98835935.jpg
n.b.: put (www) before the links!
Thanks in advance.
#edit: this outside-link restriction thingy is annoying =[
I was looking for this just now too. I found it in Settings / All Settings / Connections / USB to PC.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Ace II - Disable MTP?

Hi all,
I've a proud owner of this I8160 phone. I'm glad of it, but the problem is that I can't access to the SD external's contents.
Firstly, I can get the USB working on PC by enabling it on "Settings -> Wireless networks -> USB settings". However, external SD (empty folders "external_sd" and "usbStorage" make me guessing about it) is not accessible, and I don't know how to get it.
I figured that "MTP connected" note on the phone has to be involved, so I tried to disable it. Searching in the web points to that USB debugging must be enabled; however, this won't perform anything new.
Hence, my question is, do you know how to disable the MTP connection on this phone? I want only USB mass storage, no kies at all!
Any ideas? Rooting may help?

No need to root your phone if you just want to transfer files. I have the same issue as yours.
Here's what I did:
1. On your phone go to settings>wifi and networks>USB Utilities
2. Do not connect the cable to the pc yet, tap first the box on the phone saying connect to pc (something like that)
3. Then connect the cable from the phone to the pc, a green android will appear then
You can now transfer files from your pc to your phone, vice versa.:good:

Can't access USB mass storage on my PC

So I can't connect my Droid RAZR to my windows 7 machine...
I have tried a lot of things!
I've tried:
*Different computers including Vista and Linux
*Different cables
*Different fastboot files
*Re-installing drivers
*Factory reset
*PIM sync from the market etc.
What happens when I plug my phone into my PC is the computer recognizes it, it makes a sound, then it says Unknown Device connected or some times it says USB malfunctioned and then on my lockscreen it says the phone is charging but it doesn't show on my battery icon.
Whats also interesting is if I got into Fastboot mode and connect to my computer it says USB connected and then I can use it in RSD with no problems.
I'm on ICS with no root.
Please help!

With the phone plugged in, have you tried opening up the lockscreen so you can get to your phone? Please take a screenshot of the device manager settings.
Computer Management -> Device Manager -> Find the device (double click on it) -> Details -> Hardware Ids
Or you can write out what the hardware ID is. Thanks.
YOu said you also tried it in linux. please post the output from lsusb for any unknown devices

I am also having a similar issue with the pc not recognizing the phone. I never had an issue with this problem. I have only rooted my phone with no custom room. I have always connected my phone to the pc and was giving a connection screen on my phone asking me if i want to connect as a mass media storage. A week ago this behavior stopped. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't remember doing anything to the phone to mess up the setting? I connected it to several computers using different micro usb data cables and nothing occurs.
The only thing happens is my phone receives a charge from the computer and thats it. Any ideas? Is there anyway i can reset the system or what not?

me also facing same problem and already i turned on USB Debugging mode but nothing happened. still i can't connect USB mass storage of my android device
Hey guys what you should try to do is use this :
after pluggin in your devices and removing their current driver in device manager(control panel>admin tools>computer management>device manager>
and then install this
http://adbdriver.com/upload/AdbDriverInstaller.exe
also make sure you adb debugging is enabled (if it's not visible(setttings>about/info>build number tap it multiple times) usually its settings>dev options>usb debugging.
also maybe try using this software as pc suite myphonexplorer
Can you guys go to the storage menu in settings, press the menu key, select USB connection mode (or something like that) and play around with the settings in there? Try that out.

Considering Android 6.0 and MTP / Desktop PC File Manager

Hey,
I upgraded to 6.0 and found it very frustrating how Google handled the MTP and Desktop File Manager with the new OS.
Every time I hook up the phone to my PC or Laptop, I have to manually select MTP to get access to the Nexus 5's internal SD card, which I didn't have to do with KitKat or Lollipop.
This is so annoying....and yes, I set MTP in the Developers Options, but that didn't help.
Also, tons of folders simply won't show in the Windows File Explorer, like Titanium Backup, so I have to create a dummy folder manually, copy my back upped files in there and then move those files via ES File Explorer App to the actual Titanium Backup folder.
Same goes with almost everything I want to copy to the SD card. With Lollipop it was just copy and paste and you were good to go, in Marshmallow I constantly have to create dummy folders and then move the stuff to the directory I want it to be with ES File Explorer.
Is this done by purpose from Google or am I just doing something wrong??
I hope somebody knows the answer.
Cheers
same issue...
I noticed that too. my file explorer dont show any files (mixplorer )
Anyone?
I bet somebody is doing an Xposed module for setting MTP to default, yet the problem with the not properly working file explorer is bugging me. I don't want to spend 5 minutes for simply moving a file if copying it fails.
And since I am not at home alot, ONLY using a WiFi Transfer app is not an option
I would stop using MTP to transfer files all together. I use FTPserver and Filezilla and transfer files over WiFi. It's faster and I don't have to plug my phone in.
EDIT: I just read you said a WiFi transfer app is not an option. Sorry

Yea no problem. I already have two Wifi transfer apps which work pretty fine, yet since I travel sometimes at work (military) I don't have Wifi all the time or it isn't that easy to connect everything i.e. when I am in an hotel.
Tbh, I didn't try if all the folders show up in one of those wifi file explorers. Via USB MTP a lot of folders don't show up which is impossible to work with because I get constant error messages like "that folder already excists" or the transfer fails.

You can maybe use the WiFi hotspot (if you have it), connect your laptop and transfer over your hotspot connection. I've done that on the Mac I use at work before.
I have the same problem with MTP.
On mac I found a solution (kind of). You have to go to "Developer options" -> "Select USB Configuration" -> switch from "MTP" to something else (e.g. "Charging only") and then switch back to "MTP". It will open Android File Transfer and it will work until you disconnect usb cable. After that you have to repeat that process

Thanks, I mentioned it in a shorter form in my initial post. This and the not properly working file transfer from Desktop to phone AND the not showing folders on the SD card are the reason I won't upgrad to Marshmallow for now.

I found a shortcut ... you can switch to mtp from notification center. I think that's a feature Because every time you put usb cable in phone, Android File Transfer won't start and jump on the middle of the screen .
Besides that, phone works much better now. At least my phone. Battery efficiency is much much better. From half a day to day and a half.

I know that, I still think this is pretty annoying as hell because you have to do it every time, the settings won't stick. Also no idea why they had to move USB Settings to the developers menu.
Too complicated and uncomfortable to use.
There is still the fear of the not working Files transfer from windows to the SD card which keeps me from upgrading.
I hope this gets fixed...or anyone makes an Xposed module (when Xposed is working), I don't care then.

USB Mode: Set Default to MTP (file transfer) Marshmallow/6.0
====================================================================
This worked on my Nexus 6 with 6.0
Default is set to Charge only mode, You can enable developer options and enable MTP feature by following below steps
1. Settings -> About phone -> Touch 5 times on Build Number to enable Developer options
2. Settings -> Developer Options -> Select USB Configuration -> MTP

I already mentioned this a couple of times that this doesn't work.
The setting doesn't stick.
Did you copy that from here? --> http://androiding.how/set-mtp-default-usb-connection-marshmallow/
Also, is you file transfer via MTP working properly, can you copy folders with integrated subfolders? Do you see EVERY folder you can see in an File Explorer app also on your Windows PC Explorer?
I've also encountered something like this when i started out with MRA56K.
adb server would not see the device.
unplugged usb cable, went to dev options, selected MTP ("charging" was selected), plugged USB back in, been working ever since.
I have the same problem on my Mac too. I have to manually select 'MTP' from the notification shade despite setting it to MTP in developer options
