And the 5.1.1 update arrives !!! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

Verizon has started rolling out the 5.1.1 update !!! Te build no is G920VVRU3BOG5.
If you get OTA, do share screenshot.. what's the size?
Btw, if you love root access, don't update.
Source here

No OTA yet.

Sounds good, just came across the news elsewhere, but (obviously?) waiting until someone can root it.

I wonder if a rom similar to the OF1 rom in the Verizon Edge development thread will be possible? Also, I saw in the general S6 thread that they were able to finally get Xposed to boot...still very very very experimental but it's booting...I won't even think about taking the OTA if Xposed is close. I am definitely glad they finally pushed the update, though!

Keep Root or Update?
Right now I'm on Cleanrom Lite 1.1 & I love it, especially the battery life.
But, I don't like being vulnerable to Stagefright.
Do you think I should keep root & wait for someone to root 5.1.1 or lose root & take the update?
Thanks!
--JP

I would wait personally I'm pretty sure someone will be looking into keeping root and being able to get 5.1.1

Download textra and use that for sms till 5.1.1 is rooted. It has a stage fright patch in it that prevents videos from downloading until you authorize it

Its simple...if you like root...wait...
On a side note, im amazed 5.1.1 is out. I might take the update a week before september to try it out before I sell this for a new Moto Style.

The 5.1.1 fixes launcher wallpaper issues and gets rid of the parallax effect (wallpapers FINALLY work on launchers)
aaaaand as a bonus it patches stagefright.
so I'm definitely sticking with 5.1.1.
PS what are some ways to root without tripping KNOX or whatever the binary counter is?

I don't have Verizon so o have to wait for a stock Odin

Congrats guys, AT&T is now officially in last place for 5.1.1

Just forced a check, and still getting the message that I have the latest version even though it is not 5.1.1 - any suggestions on how to get it to "see the light"?

anyone actually receive the OTA yet? I saw news of this yesterday evening. I have been checking for the update ever since then, but no dice. I haven't seen anyone online actually receive it. How long does it usually take from announcment to download in Verizon land? I used to be on AT&T prior to this device.

Not even Smart Switch is picking up the update yet, but I haven't tried Kies yet.

False sense of security since that is only one of the demonstrated ways exploiting Stagefright. There are many others.
Even the Google patch itself the other day to Nexus devices leaves open other issues that they now have to patch.

Is there any downsides to upgrading to 5.1.1 if you're on OF1 since there's no root for it anyways?

Anyone notice any performance differences?

I'd say go for it, isn't there suppose to be RAW. Support anyways?

downloading now

Is it a good idea to root before the OTA update July 6?

I've heard rumors that Verizon will be sending over the air (OTA) updates around July 6 or July 7.
However, I am really getting sick of the bloatware and HTC Sense on the phone and would like to remove it as soon as possible.
Do rooted phones receive OTA updates? Can the OTA updates mess up the root?
Will it be more difficult to root after the OTA update?
Best thing to do is root now. The devs are extremely good at getting the newest ota in a rooted and flashable form when its released.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
/agree - if you are going to root, might as well root now before applying an OTA
The other thing is that these rumors (and that's all they are) will just keep you in limbo forever while you don't take any action because you are waiting on something that isn't even real. So screw the rumors and just do what you want today and make the most of it.
Best option is to root, it may be rumored to be out then, but VZW is really bad about getting out updates.
Root + custom roms/kernels out now are still better than what the OTA will offer.
Root now. Root now. Root. Now.
Is there a deodexed version of the stock Rom? I can't find it.
7/6 now? First it was 6/30, now 7/6? I'll be surprised if it happens.

1. Don't listen to rumors about the next release date of official updates for our phone.
2. Rooted phones running custom ROMs don't receive OTA updates.
3. An unrooted phone that receives the next OTA update may or may not have to wait for a new rooting method.
Hope this helps
The reasons above were why I went ahead and rooted my phone. I wasn't having any problems with it but didn't want to get locked out of rooting in case the coming update f*ed our phones like their previous one did.
Root now. Been rooted since the day after I bought the device and absolutely no problems for me.

It is very possible that the Gingerbread does in fact silently bring the hotspot removal update as well. Seeing as how they were promised around the same time period this sounds to be true.

2. Correction: Rooted phones still recieve OTA updates but under no circumstance should you accept the update; always cancel or you will not be able to boot your OS again.
3. According to the root method for the Thunderbolt posted by jcase, it doesn't matter what update you're on because during the root process you fully downgrade to a pre-stock RUU. A new unsupported update will not affect this and you will always be able to use that root method no matter what update you are on.

During the root method by jcase that last part of the process is that you reupdate to a rooted stock ROM. And I also confirmed that you can even flash the rooted MR2 update as well (currently the latest update for the Thunderbolt of which I am personally using right now).
I highly suggest rooting the phone before the updates.
I personally love having purchased System App Remover from the Market. $2 for a fantastic App back-up and a seamless app remover.
I use it to remove bloatware or other silly apps that sometimes are put on ROMs or added tweaks.
Seriously couldn't be happier since I rooted my phone.
I would would always root before OTA, sometimes am update makes it hard to root again for a while.
Also I don't know how CWR works on this phone but on all my old devices it would automatically block OTA updates.

Or you can just use viper4android, kill stagefright, and tell Verizon, "Thanks, but no thanks--I'm in this for _me_ now."
I am not entirely sure what that means, but man, the day when this contract ends cannot come soon enough.

Pretty sure it's still 5.0. I don't think the S5 will be getting any more updates, it's at the end of its software cycle since 5.0, this update was only released for the stagefright fix.

No. Verizon's own custom OE1 is the reason that it's not rootable. Once you have the OE1 Kernel or higher, you cannot root unless they find another exploit. I doubt they will considering it's an older phone that's already being phased out in terms of support.

Take it back. You have a "new" phone that basically has no support for it anymore. If you have something to use currently other than the S5, I'd consider waiting till the new Google Nexus 5 or 6 2015 edition coming out this year. That should have root and an unlocked bootloader (Google wouldn't stand for Verizon locking down their phone).

You would have to find a phone you like, go to that forum, and check. I believe any phone with an unlocked bootloader can always be rooted? And I'm pretty sure the Google nexus 5/6 (the old ones) will always be rootable.
I'm jumping ship from Samsung (I wanted to move to the Note at one point, but Samsung screwed up big time with their phones trying to make it like an iPhone, and with Samsung/Verizon in bed with locking up root/bootloader).

There's a search bar at the top of XDA where you can enter a device. It also allows you to specify which carrier as well. This is from the M9 forum. Says you need a JAVA card which is expensive, but it unlocks the phone/allows root. You can also donate (usually $20-60) users to do it for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...t-s-off-how-root-s-off-verizon-m9-20-t3123178
I have no idea about the M8, seems to be the same, have to have S-OFF or whatever the heck that means. Do research yourself if you want the phone.

Follow the instructions in muniz_ri's thread. He hasn't released the deodexed version though. You should never take ota when rooted, and you should actually have it disabled as soon as you root. One user reported that they ota updated without losing root, but I'd never recommend it.
There is no benefit in disabling it. You have to authorize any update, so it cannot overwrite it on its own. The only reason to disable it is the popup after an update comes out which can be stopped by deleting the update.zip then having the install fail.
Two or three updates ago, I lost the ability to rotate my screen unless an app forces it to rotate, now with this update my phone no longer reads sd cards, and in fact boot loops if there is one inserted. I've done a lot of searching, both when the initial problem manifested, and now with the new problem, but haven't seen anyone with a fix. Any suggestions?

Root for Build LRX22G-G920VVRU2AOF1

I picked up the S6 from Verizon over the weekend and without thinking I took an out of the box update that pushed the build to OF1. From what I have been reading there's no going back from this build. Is that true and would anyone know if someone is working on a method to root this new build or that will allow us to roll back to the old build to gain root?

If you long press the notification you can open app info and disable notifications from it.
It won't fully "disable" the updates but itll at least stop nagging you about them.
Probably a better way to do it but this works for me.
Are you people aware of the stagefright security issues and the recently published exploit? Did you really not know about the worst security flaw in Android affecting about 950 million Android phones?
Check this page out for details:
https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/category/technologies/operating-systems/mobile/android/
Install this upgrade as soon as possible, it will ensure that your phone is protected from the stagefright bugs plaguing Android for months, we'll since discovered a few months ago. It is the most important update your phone has ever received.
LG does not have this update for the European Flex2 yet, lucky you that you get it already.
