I asked as by the oneplus forum guys to post here to get a solution. I've been using OnePlus for a while, and I recently had to clear my Contacts app data and cache. All of my contacts are currently saved in the cloud with Google, and I have other apps installed such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Waze.
However, upon resyncing my contacts from Google, I get contacts that are merged incorrectly in random order only on the phone . The cloud is fine, and I am not sure why this local contacts problem is occurring (Example of improperly merged contacts: Randy contact merged with Stacey contact, Mom contact with Tom contact, Ryan contact merged with Customer Service Hotline contact).
The only solution is to separate the contact in Edit mode. However, this is impractical for thousands of contacts and it's hard to know which ones have been merged incorrectly until the improperly merged contacts appears during daily usage. Does anyone have answers for the below questions?
Is this improper merged contacts a common occurrence and why is this happening?
If so, how can one resolve this merged contacts issue quickly and easily?
Is there a way to batch separate all the contacts on the phone? That might be a probable solution
I had something similar using Ready. Flushing the app data and cache did not work and I ended up having to go back to an older backup. In the end I did not find out what had caused the corruption/chaos.

It's a phone/contact app. I like it over anything else Andriod has as a phone app, I could find. Updates have been pretty regular. I also like the visual interface page setups.

Been using it about 1 year now, for the 3 OPO's our family has.

Which app do you advise ? The Samsung integrated in the Social Hub or the official one from the market ?
I come from a TP where I really liked HTC's integration of facebook in Sense. Not too invasive and living quite well with my exchange account
Right now my contacts in my outlook (2011) on my PC are linked with their facebook profile, and so are they in Sense. With my Tab I worry a little bit about putting a mess in a system that has found its balance
Any risk to duplicate contacts if I use the Samsubg app ? Or the Android app ? Will they merge properly with my exchnage contacts ? Stay aside ?
I just dont wnat to make the step to find out after I messed up my contact list (More than 1200 people so clenaing that up would take me a few days....)
Hi I use Facebook from the market and also use one called boo

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The built-in one is pretty much for synching only, any actual facebook viewing would need to be done via the browser.
I switched from the built-in SNS client to the official Facebook client and didn't experience any problems.

I haven't installed anything yet Not tryig to fix anything just trying to be sure what I'll do wont create troubles to my contact list
The built-in app is just meant to sync your existing contacts on the phone and match them with facebook friends ? Or it adds all the facebook friends ?
The official app doesnt do this ?
Don't get the account permissions confused if you install the market app. Its annoying to find you gave the stock app permissions that arent on the market app.

Both versions sync contact pictures etc. The official app gives you the option to sync pictures+status updates with all friends, just those with existing contact entries, or none at all.

Anyone ? Maybe I am making too much fuss about this but I dont wnat to mes up my exchange contact list...
Not 100% sure about this, but I don't think it will mess up any of your existing contacts.
When logging in using the official Facebook app, it will create a sort of 'profile' for all existing contacts -- it won't merge info with the actual contact. You'll see this when you edit a contact, there will be 2 (or more) tabs when editing the contact.
It's like a 'Metacontact' in Trillian wherein it's only a merged 'View' of a contact, but in reality the data is in separate 'profiles'. The Facebook tab is uneditable and will only display info.
The only problem I have so far is that when creating a new SMS, it will display -ALL- contact numbers and e-mail address of contacts, even if the number is exactly the same:
i.e. I have a contact named Bob Smith in my Google, Exchange and Facebook accounts, and they are merged as one account. In the Dialer, all the info is merged into one contact when displaying, but when editing, they are editable in 3 separate tabs.
However when I create an SMS and scroll to find Bob Smith, it displays all contact infos of Bob Smith, even duplicate ones, like if I have his number +123456789 on Google and Exchange and Facebook, it displays 3 same numbers when selecting a recipient.
Edit:
Also, when you sign out or remove the Facebook app, it will delete the Facebook 'profile' of the contact on your contacts list, maintaining the state of the previous contact before you logged in / installed Facebook.
Thanks a lot, that's good to know
I already saw the mess it was having google contacts and exchnage contacts (I usually maintain both... for 1200 contacts!) The worst is for contacts for which I entered only the first name... they happen to be all merged together (Well done samsung... They could have defined a merge key a bit larger than just the name........)
What about when you use the Samsung app ?? Someone knows ?
Hi Guys,
i got a serious problem, i synced my contacts with google, now i got the problem, that i got every number like 5 times (all the same nr.) @ the contact list.
This is pretty annoying, because of this issue i got around ~4000 contacts saved..
Is there any app or so, that lets me just check/uncheck the contacts i want to delete so i can easily resort my contact list.
All the apps i found so far are only able to delete a single contact per task.
Thats a bit awful with ~4k contacts, thats why i ask you now
thx in Advance

Hello Guys,
thx for the responses.
I already did several wipes (installed different builds) but google automatically syncs all ~4k contacts to my mobile phone.
Maybe someone had this problem too and could solve it easier then delete every single contact alone.

What is the app's Name?

I had the same issue as you, syther.
I didn't think about looking for an app that would do that.
1) Go online (using GMail) to the Google account your phone is linked to.
2) On the left there should be a button called "contacts."
3) Click it and it should bring you to all your contacts that are synced to it.
4) Click the "more actions" button and go to "find & merge duplicates."
It won't merge all of the duplicates, but it'll merge most of the ones you have hopefully.
An example of a contact not merging would be
Joe-Bob (555-555-5555) and Joe-Bob (+1555-555-5555)
For that scenario I just went and deleted it manually through GMail to ensure it will never sync those contacts again.
Hopefully that will lessen the burden of deleting your contacts manually.

you will also want to create groups in Google's contacts. What you may have happening is the ton of random one time emial addresses that got saved.
I've created a "main" group that only has legitimate contacts and haven't had any issues since.
You can also export all of the contacts out of Google into a .csv file that you can open in excel and fix to your hearts desire.
Thank you !
I couldĀ“ve come on that idea on my on lol - most time, the simplest things you cant find hehe
awesome i solved it through gmail directly really thank you people!
Is it even possible now with the update to 4.0.4?
In the last release, I was able to only store contacts that were hosted on my exchange accounts or on the phone itself. Now with the latest updates, I'm stuck dealing with several hundred people I follow on Google+. Is there anyway to remove these contacts without disconnecting my gmail account from my phone?
Seriously, one of the most basic functions and it's completely jacked up.

Open Google + hit menu>settings and disable add contacts from Google+

Yeah, I figured out where the problem was. I had turned off Google+ contacts, but the contacts stayed there. I had to flush the contacts and contact storage in order to remove them. Also, with FB and Twitter, it synchronized contacts from there, which meant going into each app, disabling it, then re-flushing the contacts.
I also had to disable the Synchronize app for AT&T because I don't use their phonebook service and it was causing my contact list to take up to 15 minutes to begin showing because it couldn't access my subscriber information.
My issue was mainly out of frustration and because it is new enough there were no real results from Google that had helped. Now that all my apps are not synchronizing their contacts with the main address book, which was slowing it down, and I was able to get rid of the AT&T phonebook issues, it's better.
While I'm a huge fan of Google products and services, there attitude of ignoring the masses when it comes to certain features that everyone wants/needs in the name of 'it's better' the way we designed it gets frustrating.
I'm hoping someone here knows a solution to this:
My contacts [not even the same name] keep getting merged/linked together automatically. It's happened on every Android device I've owned, and it's always happened to completely different names. I keep my contacts meticulously organized, and would never have a duplicate that would even need to be linked together. I've sent emails to Google asking how to disable it, etc. and they tell me it's a feature that everyone likes basically.
The most recent linking disaster was it linked my current girlfriend 'Lisa' with my ex-girlfriend 'Elizabeth' with TOTALLY DIFFERENT last names...WTF? So when I hit the dial button on the contact clearly labelled 'Lisa', and with her picture...I was actually calling my EX! Needless to say this led to a long argument that there was no way I could accidentally call me ex when trying to call my girlfriend, and blaming it on Google is ridiculous.
It's done this with a contact 'David', my then boss...and a contact labelled Dad...so when I tried calling work at 2AM (when I start) I actually woke up my dad in the middle of the night. There is no way of knowing when this happens unless I manually check every contact to see if there has been any merging or memorize everyone's phone number so I can see if it's really dialing the right number. It even linked my friend Charles, with Les Schwab Tire store once before.
Anyway, everything I've searched on the subject says that there should be some sort of notification asking me if I want to link/merge contacts, and to make sure to select 'NO'. I've never been notified though, and just get surprised at least once a month when my phone calls someone else, when I select a contact to dial.
Whoever knows the answer will save my life!
Thanks

It's happened on my Atrix running GB, also on my Note running ICS. It's happened to 3 other people's phone I know.
I think you might be on to something...it does seem to happen most often to names where I have no last name entered. It merged 'Lisa' with no last name to "Elizabeth" with a last name. It has merged 'Dad' with quite a few different names beginning with D.
They are not merged/linked when viewing contacts on the web in gmail...they are still separate there. It just merges them on the phone only. The most recent one I can't figure out the algorithm behind thinking these were duplicates and merging them automatically was: [Lowe's] and my friend [Lana], Hit her picture from my favorites menu, and got the Lowe's Home Improvement store. Her picture was displayed on the dialing screen and everything. Had to go into contacts, choose 'un-link', and sure enough it had automatically merged to two contacts after sitting separately for years.
This isn't Google. This behaviour is of the stock contacts applications by Motorola and Samsung. Each one modifies the Google contacts app in their own way, especially with regard to linking of contacts and social networking. You'll be better off asking in your device forum to see if others are facing this issue, and contacting Motorola or Samsung about it. It doesn't happen on AOSP Android ROMs, and on pure Android devices like the Nexus line.

This is definitely the best advice. I had this problem when I got the original Evo which was running Sense. Your phone might be trying to link similar contacts as well as facebook contacts if you've logged into the facebook app and let it sync contacts. I recommend going directly to your Google Contacts and doing a bit of organizing and cleaning. Once you have that cleaned up it will hopefully not mis-link your contacts again, even when you log into facebook or something like that.

Right. I did that when I first got my phone. I named all my contacts properly (First name, Last name) so the Sense Facebook sync linked my Facebook contacts correctly. If you want to keep nicknames rather than formal names, then adding all your contacts' email addresses from Facebook will also link them correctly regardless of name. Even if your email addresses and contact names don't match with Facebook, you have an option of manually going through all your contacts and linking them (in HTC Sense). You'll only need to do that once as Sense stores an '< HTCdata >' tag in the 'Notes' field of each contact indicating which Facebook contact it is linked to, so any future sync will immediately link the contacts based on this tag. The best Facebook sync app for AOSP ROMs, HaxSync, also makes use of these tags.
Organizing your Google contacts just once in your life goes a long way.

Hello all,
I have a problem syncing my Google contacts with my HTC One M8 (running Android 6.0). In the past, I have been able to sync the HTC People app with Google (and also link them with data from other apps).
Yesterday, I had to reset my Google account settings. I also cleared the People data, before putting the account settings back and syncing the data. Now it will only sync some of the contacts. It's missing about 190 of my contacts (which are clearly still there on Google). I can find no pattern to the contacts it includes/excludes. I have tried repeating the process - clearing all the data and settings and putting it all back - but I cannot get all of the contacts to appear on my phone any more.
Can anyone tell me how to solve this? Failing that, is there another (reliable) app for syncing contacts data from multiple sources, including Google, Whatsapp, and Skype? Thank you in advance!
Can you verify that missing ppl have either google plus profiles or (birth)dates set? Refer to https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/contact-sync-flashing-8-1-image-syncing-t3715229 ... this seems broken since the 8.1 release but also breaks for non-oreo and non-pixel devices

Thanks for posting so quickly - and for directing me to a thread for precisely this issue! I am missing rather too many contacts to go through all of them, but it's definitely not confined to contacts with a G+ profile and/or a date. As you say, the Android version on my phone also pre-dates that of most users experiencing this problem.
It seems there's no clear solution yet, but (from the thread) it seems to be early days. For now, I have manually exported my Google Contacts to a vCard file and imported it to my phone contacts. I guess I'll wait and see if Google comes up with a solution in due course.

Deleted my Google account and People app data (again) today. Replaced them and suddenly I am finding ALL my Google contacts syncing again. I don't really have an explanation for why it worked this time but it might be relevant that I also installed the dedicated Google Contacts app this time round.
I solved this problem by deactivating power saver. After a few minutes, Contacts started to sync with my Google account.
