Hey guys i'm using a nexus s on att without a data plan. Fortunately, att hasn't detected that it is a smart phone and i haven't been forced into using a data plan. The only problem is that since i have data blocked, i cannot view mms messages. Is there any way i can retrieve them over wifi?
Ya get them emailed

well i cant tell someone to email it to me every time. gets annoying
having the same issue... try using go sms and setting the mms setting so that it thinks your using a non smartphone
Is there any way to do this? my friend has a very small data limit and does not want to go over so she only uses wifi. On her last android phone pic messages still worked with data disabled, but this one dies not. She has unlimited picture messaging so that's fine, just that dang data cap.
Any ideas?

I don't see how that is possible. Just as you can't use T-MO's 'my account' app without data being on. Perhaps on other carriers they always have it on just for messages even if you have 'disabled' the data connection?
It may be possible to do this with wifi calling enabled, but I doubt it. Pictures and video are sent via cell phone data and have always been as far as I know.
FWIW, picture messages do not apply towards data usage (and should not apply towards data usage). Be aware that upon turning on your mobile data connection many programs will begin using it especially if you have 'background data' enabled. I personally leave it off and turn it on PRIOR to looking at messages I've just received to ensure I will receive a sent picture. If you don't have your data on prior to viewing the message thread you will be 'downloading' the messages forever and never get them.
If you believe that they are counting pics in data usage go into a t-mo store and show them your evidence of their evil pink wrongdoings (stay away from india telephone support )
Aaron is right, picture messaging does not count towards data. I know, since I don't have a data plan at the moment, but I can still use 4G for improved call quality, syncing contacts etc., and picture messaging.
You will need a text plan though, obviously
I am using a stock rooted rom and recently began to experience issue with sending and receiving text messages. I use Handcent SMS and have the stock messaging app frozen and for some reason the messages look like they've been sent but they actually haven't been. For some reason this only happens when I am at home and the cell reception isn't the best but it's good enough where I should be able to send receive texts. When they do happen to go through, I'll receive like 20 texts at the same time but the people had sent them hours before. I have looked for settings within Handcent and haven't been able to find anything.
Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

Did you always freeze the stock messaging app? I used handcent on my droid incredible, but I haven't used it since because the stock and AOSP messaging apps have gotten much better.
I know that handcent used to rely on the stock messaging app for messages to pass through. Try defrosting it and simply turn off message notifications, then you won't even notice it running.

I've had the stock app frozen for almost a year and until recently everything worked fine. Handcent now has an option to choose what app you want to handle the default actions for messaging. I get a message that pops up saying the service is unavailable right now and the message will be sent when the service becomes available. I'm not sure if that is coming from Handcent or the phone.

The only thing I can think of is mobile data signal. I recently went from the vrblk3 modem to the vrbmb1 firmware and I'm noticing a big increase in my signal strength pretty much everywhere I go.
Since it only happens in your house, it sounds like you just aren't getting a good enough signal, or the data your phone says is being sent actually is getting hung up on verizon's end. I would try a different firmware package and see what happens, just don't use vrbmd3 firmware. It sounds like your issue is with your phone, not the app.

My one m8 is not rooted or modded in any way and I am having texting troubles. It doesn't matter what app I am in, sms texts take about two minutes to send and I sometimes receive duplicate texts from whoever I am texting. I have 4g with three bars and I dont know what the problem is. I can temporarily fix it by restarting my phone but after a couple minutes it goes back to normal. I have tried using hangouts, the htc default messaging app and verizon message and they all have the same problem.

Not sure whether this is the same thing, but my recipients are complaining about getting two of every text message from me. It doesn't matter whether I let Hangouts take over SMS or not. I've disabled the Verizon messaging app; I'm thinking of deleting it altogether. Wondering whether this is an artefact of the Sprint messaging app that is flashed with the extreme powersaver mode zip file.
First off sorry for bringing up this old thread but didnt see the sense in starting a new one.
Just wanted to add that recipients of my texts seem to pretty frequently receive duplicates. For awhile I was using Handcent but completely removed that and am using the stock messaging app with the same results in both. I have not flashed to extreme power saving mode referenced above as a possible culprit.
So with that said just curious if anyone else is experiencing this or has any possible solutions? I hate calling verizon but I may give them a call this week on it if I dont get any responses here and see what they say.
Bump. I came here to post a thread on the exact same problem. My texts almost never go through. I've googled it extensively but can't find a solution.

I know this is an old thread and I hate bumping something so old.. but as no one had posted a fix in here (and I'm sick of seeing failed to send messages in my sms app) I know of one workaround that has worked for me. In the default (messages) app, if you go into settings for sms and mms and change priority to High sms and mms work much better. I no longer see failed to send messages and they send in a few seconds rather than 30-60. The only problem is, within that same app, you see a red exclamation point next to every message you send. It's an eye sore but it's the only fix I've seen. I've had this issue on every sms app I've tried and just about every rom including stock. Hope this helps someone...
Edit: I tried finding that exclamation to just delete it from the message.apk but it's pulling it from somewhere else it seems. If anyone happens to know off hand please let me know. I'm going to keep looking for that icon to remove it. I wish this want an issue. It's these little things that drive me crazy.
Edit 2: I found it in the htc framework. com.htc.resources.apk for anyone interested. I'm removing that icon from my phone now... Hopefully it all works smoothly.
I have been using this app ever since handcent caused my phone from sending mms. Holy crap am I surprised that this is the best messaging app I have used. It allows you to text over wifi, which is huge for me because where I work reception is not the best.
I did a search and was curious why this app was never talked about? It truly doesn't feel like you're average verizon bloatware.
Because its from Verizon

Yep, I feel the same and I also stopped using Handcent and other like it because of the mms problems. I only wish Messages+ had a cooler gui.
I thought I was alone when it came to this feeling. Aside from the UI needing some touching up, the convenience and reliability of the app is amazing. I love the synchronization across devices, responding to texts from my work iPhone, and logging into the website to respond from my browser when I'm too lazy to retrieve my phone from the other room...
Is the texting over WiFi built into the app or the stock Rom itself? I'm wondering if this would work with hangouts.
It would be great if the ui could be personalized and have themes.
Syncing across multiple devices and being able to mute group texts are definitely other great features.
Texting over wifi is built into the app.
You can customize it can't you? Swipe from left side to right. There is a whole customize section. Colors, bubble styles, backgrounds, fonts....

It's actual SMS over WiFi?
How can I go about seeing if the texting over WiFi works for me? Does the app ask specifically if you'd like to send the text via WiFi if there is no cellular signal or... ?

There are limitations to the customization though. I.e., you can't remove the contact photos in the conversation list view. Aside from that, yes, it's simple to make it into a minimalist's daydream.
I hated this app, as well as hangouts and the other stock messages one. Deleted all of them and I love 8sms. I can dark theme it as well as other options. I also hate Samsung keyboard and use Kies. I'm pretty sure the WiFi SMS thing is just something auto done when you're connected to WiFi, not messages app related.

I suspect this is not true. Technically yes, any app can be programmed to just do something like send the txt as an e-mail to a carrier's SMS / MMS gateway if no cellular connection is present, but I'm pretty sure that the message would show up differently to the receiver -- as the full gateway number/e-mail. I'm more curious if the Messages+ app does this seamlessly, and that's what I assume... but I don't have a good area to test it currently where I have a good WiFi signal but no cellular signal.
I will concur with most of you. This app is ACTUALLY useful. Especially when using it with other verizon users, it functions like iMessage as in you can see when people have read it. Also if they are using the app then you can see when they are typing too.
Only issue i've ever had with it is that it will send or receive the same text multiple times occassionally. It's not specific to this phone because i've had it happen before.

ahhh...gotcha, cool deal.
Another great thing about Verizon Messages is that you can use it the send and receive messages on a computer (through a web interface or a dedicated program on PC) and on non-Verizon tablets/phones. Being able to send/receive messages via a computer or any of my wifi tablets is a huge plus.
I might have to try this now. I never really gave it much thought since i been using EvolveSms
I actually like this app and have it installed on a Tmobile device because that phone has WiFi calling and sometimes better reception than my Verizon phone at work. I can get all messages on one phone without having to carry both of them. Send /receive on the Tmobile phone from my Verizon number with this app is great.
My needs are minimal and I like it. It's a nice improvement from the stock app without being buried with features I'll never use.
