Rooting 5.0.1 - General Questions and Answers

Was on KK 4.4.2 This was rooted and unlocked. This on USC network. My phone is a SCH-R970
Decided to load 5.0.1. Was able to do this without much difficulty using Odin 3.10.6
Now, however, I'm not able to load TWRP or CF-Auto-Root. I keep getting errors using Odin. I'm able to go to stock recovery, erase everything, reload either KK 4.4.2 or Lollipop 5.0.1, either will work. With 4.4.2, I'm again able to root but not with 5.0.1
Team UsCellular was most helpful in suggestions, but none seemed to work for me. Was left as an unsolvable mystery.
Has anyone here come across such a thing? Any suggestions. Any advice on what forums I might visit?

1 up this....
Interested in rooting the USC SCH-R970 with 5.0.1. Any success yet? If so, please help.

No, no help yet. At this point I've given up. I take it you've been having similar issues? If so, I would point you to TeamUSCellular's forums. They have always been most helpful and forthcoming with their efforts, although, sadly, not with mine this time.

Got a buncha questions for you guys

Hello, my roommate has a Verizon Galaxy S3. He recently took the 4.4 update, and it apparently screwed up his phone pretty bad. He gets terrible battery life and force closes and freezing. He came into my room knowing that I'm an android nerd and he asked me to root and rom his phone. Cool.
So, now I'm trying to catch up on the current state of the GS3.
He has never rooted or installed recovery. I was under the impression that the Verizon GS3 had an unlocked bootloader, but now I'm reading that the bootloader might be locked since he updated?
1: Is it possible to ODIN back to an earlier version and then unlock his bootloader?
2: What's JTAG?
3: Is there an easy way to install recovery on 4.4 that I'm missing?
Any links or advice you guys could give me would be really helpful... I'm currently reading and jumping between links, but It's hard to figure out where the phone currently stands with all the conflicting information out there and the new update that just pushed.

1: No, it is not possible to ODIN back to unlock the bootloader. Your friend is stuck on 4.4.2.
2: JTAG is a service you can send your phone off for and pay for to unbrick a hard bricked phone. As long as you or your friend do not hard brick his phone, you won't need a JTAG.
3: You cannot install any kind of standard recovery on 4.3.1 or 4.4.2 on the Verizon Galaxy S3. There is an unofficial safestrap you may be able to use on 4.4.2 found here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797314 But there are no ROMs to flash using safestrap, so for the moment it is kind of pointless.
There really isn't conflicting information in these threads unless you are looking at old, outdated threads on rooting. All of the information anyone needs to know about the current state of the Verizon Galaxy S3 can be found in just a few threads:

Anybody have info on how to root d850 yet?

I may have gotten slightly overexcited about lollipop! I factory reset my d850 so that I could get lollipop, which unroofed the phone as well as reverted TWRP recovery back to stock. Now I can't find any information on the Google machine on rooting. Does anybody have any information on when or if anyone has or will figured out a way to root the lg g3 (D850) on AT&T? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I use many apps that rely on root and when I hit the upgrade button I just assumed that one of you smarty pants already figured it out! Thanks
And that assumption was Wrong as of now there is no root exploit identified for lollipop on this device. Doesn't mean it will never happen just that no one has figured it out yet.
You might be able to downgrade using LG flash tools search around this site look in the LG lounge I believe someone has done this already
Don't take anymore ota. Updates or it might not work

[Q] Can't update, downgrade, or rest to stock OS, PLEASE HELP

Good afternoon all if anyone could please help I'd greatly appreciate it!
So I just bought a Sprint Galaxy S5 from ebay with the assumption that with some customizing I'd be able to get the phone domestically unlocked. I got the phone and it was already updated to 5.0 Lollipop so I followed this tutorial to get the SSU.apk to actually work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...locking-sprint-galaxy-s5-g900p-t3085624/page2
After a lot of time I was successful at rooting the phone and was able to downgrade to 4.4.4 but the tutorial calls for 4.4.2 but it seems that 4.4.4 was the only fw that would successfully install.
But now here's the problem I was able to obtain the domestic unlock code through Sprint but now the activation/update app doesn't work and doesn't open automatically the way that the reps said it would,. I've tried to reset stock through Kies but Kies doesn't recognize the phone. I've also tried to use Odin through out this process not only to reset back to stock but also downgrade the fw and the modem. The really annoying part is that small PDA/AP updates and installs work fine but when I try to Odin the original tars it always fails 100% getting a "sw rev check fail aboot fused 2 binary 1 " error on my phone.
I really don't know what to do at this point, and it seems the error is associated with a soft brick but the device still powers on and boots.
I thought this would be a pretty straight forward process but I've hit the wall and am losing my mind, I need help!
P.s. I flashed 4.4.4 fw with CWM and the device is still rooted
Thanks

[Q] Fixing the modem in a TWRP Recovery, Rooted Stock 4.4.4 Sprint Galaxy Note 3

I know 100% for fact that the phone is Spark enabled. I did a stock update to Lollipop once and had great Spark signal on my device. I hate Lollipop and my apps that require root access do not function on Lollipop.
I am wondering what I need to do in order to access Spark LTE again. I am using a 4.4.4 stock rom that is rooted via TWRP and Super SU. I don't recall exact versions and such as I have been using the same stock rom for a year now.
I recently retried 5.0/5.1 and my rooted apps still have issues, so I do not want to use Lollipop.
Is there a modem file I need to change to be able to get Sprint Spark? I had it before also on 4.4 when the phone was 100% stock and I did the official update to 4.4 from 4.2 or 4.3(been a year).
The phone was bought out, no longer under warranty as of November, and Knox already tripped so I don't care about any of that. The phone was manufactured Sept/Oct 2014 if that helps.
Any suggestions?

i dont know specifically how to fix your issue, but im betting if you look in your devices general forum, you will find a thread with all the available modems. you may have to try a couple until you figure out which one is correct for your version, if its not noted.

Update stock N915T 4.4.4 to 5.1.1 with N915W8 firmware through ODIN?

I have a stock N915T purchased about a year ago, it is still on 4.4.4, as I was not going to update to 5.0.1 due to Samsung's own problems. The phone is currently used on the Rogers' network in Canada. My question is can I use ODIN to flash the N915W8 5.1.1 Rogers firmware to my N915T without experiencing any problems? Also would this upgrade replace the Canadian radio on the phone, or would I have to manually flash the radio file?
Thanks in advance.
I would just root what you've got and go from there.

Thanks for the reply.
However, from my past experiences with Note 2 and S3, flashing with ODIN would unroot the device, essentially bringing the device back to stock.
Wouldn't that be the same case here? ie if I rooted my edge, then flash the w8 firmware, wouldn't that be the same as the method I proposed in my OP?

I'm not suggesting rooting to update the ROM.
I am suggesting rooting and working with what you already have.

Thanks again for the tip.
However, that is not my goal.
I would like to update the rom AND root the phone.
