Unknown app 10101 - General Questions and Answers

In my "data usage" there is a strange app named "10101"
Even more strangely, this app does not show up under "all apps"
Does anyone else have this app ?
Can it be a spyware or something ?

It is 100% a virus that turns on your data and sends your pictures, contacts, passwords etc. to the hacker.
Copy all your important data to a computer and do a factory reset NOW.
Prefferably if you are rooted reflash the rom.

Now it is even more strange !
The app has disappeared.
Although I had reflashed my ROM two days before the app "10101" appeared.
Will doing a Factory Reset save me ?

Factory reset wipes the data partition.
It will save you from any app that didn't get root.
If an app got root it can infect the system partition which is ONLY wiped when reflashing the rom.
Try finding a suspicious app in /data/app or /system/app

[Q] Multiple "Unfortunately XXXX has stopped" issues

Hi there! I'm running a 'vanila' ICS 4.0.4 Nexus S. After the last reboot i'm having multiple pop-ups about applications that were forced to stop. Literally all system apps (Contacts, Messaging, Market etc), Google apps were forced to close. Phone doesn't rings and so on.
Most sad fact is that i can't even manage to install any program for backing up the phone and make a factory reset.
What can I do now?
Any help is much appreciated
Thanks in advance

try this first: go to cwm, choose fix permissions, and see if it works. if not, you can do this: do a nandroid backup with cwm, then, factory reset everything. cache, data EVERYTHING. install any rom of your choice, then, download the titanium backup app, and you can extract app and data from the nandroid backup using titanium. never tested this my self since i backup everything before flashing and clear all data, so app crashes.
hope this helps and please hit the thanks button of you find this helpful!
Thanks for the tip, but i doubt i can do that since i can't install a thing, even appInstaller crashes for me

why do you want to install any apps before fixing it??? do you have a custom recovery?
no, i run a clean version of ICS, i haven't even rooted my phone.
i need to install a cwm app which you offer me as a fix

Oh, I see. You must have installed the update from 2.3 without wiping. Or something like that. Based on my knowledge, the best things you can do are:
1. Wipe/factory reset then reboot.
Or
Root your phone. Which wipes everything including the SD card partition. You can back up the SD card easy. I suggest the latter. So you can flash custom recovery images and do lots more than 'clean' ICS. One more thing, unrooted and unmodified is technically called stock. You will see this word a lot of times. Hope this helps.

I had similar conditions, I thought it was kernel/rom problem. and now it seems not!
I fix it this way: go into CWM recovery, backup, and then immediately restore. and the problem is gone. I know it sounds crazy, but it really works for me... every time.

And also, try clear data of the apps that had been crashing, go to its app info and click clear data. See if this solves the problem.

ok guys, thanks for the help. but i'm thinking of the other way around
can i copy stock ICS 4.0.4 fw file on to internal storage and try to update the phone from HBOOT menu (the one called up with holding 'volume up' key)?
the thing is i have some info on the phone such as sms that i'd like to keep
or perhaps copy whole 'content' of the storage to my pc and move sms base or whatever back after factory reset?
is there a way to access internal storage while in HBOOT menu, cos in the loaded up state i can't copy fw file due to crashing system apps?

I suspect the SMS are stored in the system partition... Google it. If it is, again, you need root to access those files.

[Q] hard reset proofing apps

I have an app on my phone that I want to hard reset proof not just the apk (which ive already done) but the settings also. ive tried using root explorers and changing the permissions for the /data/data folders but that doesnt help, ive tried converting the user app to a system app AFTER I set up all my options, hoping that would save all my settings, and I tried changing the permissions of my "system" app to prevent any changes. no luck. ive been researching like crazy and I hope im not posting in the wrong forum but can someone explain how to make my app and its settings master reset proof? thanks a bunch!
btw I have a rooted tmobile samsung galaxy s3 (sgh-t999) with the latest android (4.1.1 using the root66 rom), with supersu and busybox if that helps. and if it works for my s3, would the same steps work on my note 2?
Are you putting your app into /system/app ?

yes the app is in my system/app and it does survive a master reset but the settings of the app don't. Would I have to build a custom rom after installing the app and getting the settings all set how I want? Then If it's master reset it should save the settings, right?

Normally Android keeps app data under /data/data.
When you commit a hardreset, /data gets wiped. So all your app data gets removed.
You have to keep your app data under /system if you are the developer of that app

Depends on who the developer of that app is.
If it's not you, yes you have move that folder after every hardreset.
If it's you, I suggest you to use /system as your app data folder.
unfortunately I'm not the apps developer. However, if I created a custom rom by installing whatever room I wanted, then setting up the app as I want it, then creating a custom rom from that, then flash it, would that solve the problem? Because (if im understanding things right lol) then someone could matter reset it and it would revert to how the chain rom was when I flashed it, correct?
Suppose I am the developer of the app.

I'm already using a hardreset proof app on my note 2. It uses /etc folder to keep its app datas in a file. After hardreset it detects its data folder wiped, then restores settings from the backup file under /etc.
Of course your program will need root permission to do that.

can u describe how to do this in a bit more detail? Because I have an apk that I was able to put into the system/app folder, but would LOVE to save the settings so they are master-reset proof. I've contacted the developer but he was a bit of a jerk actually, saying I shouldn't need any reason to hard reset proof the apk..... ugh
From my experience, the avast! anti-theft app consist of 2 hard-reset proof part:
1. APK file in /system/app
2. Setting file (data) in /etc
Both survived hard reset...
The only way to get rid is via Aroma File Manager or flashing ROM.
Get titanium backup, backup all data of the app, and install the update. Then put the data back, if im correct settings would be copy pasted to this way. I use it for many system apps to get data back.
send from another universe, made possible by xda
If you are willing to learn how to script... it's all possible
I have done this before...
Use busybox commands...
Make a backup script that would back up all the user data in tar file.
Make a backup of apps you like to be restored on first boot of any rom.
on first boot let the script install the backed up apps, after install see if data exist for the package you just installed, get permission/owner of the package, restore data and apply permission to data.
i think is the basic
attached are the scripts i used to make this work on android 2.1
i even made a custom progress bar lol that used bootanimation as base...
.... copies custom bootanimation on start
.... copies custom boot sound...
.... restores wifi settings...
.... played music while restoring....
.... uses logcat as primary logging...
i am not sure if these scripts are the latest ones... but they worked at some point...
all was done in here...

[Q] Whtsapp stopped working and now throwing unknown errors

Hi everyone,
I have been using my nexus 5 since 4-5 days now and everything was working fine till last night when whatsapp started giving me errors (unfortunately app has been closed). I uninstalled whatsapp and when I am trying to re install it, its now giving me error "unknown error code on application install -24"
I have tried installing via apk, playstore's website, cleared the cache and data of playstore app, rebooted phone but nothing works.
I am hesitant to root my nexus 5 as there is no official recovery available and people are having issues when rooting the device and I cannot afford to have an unstable phone. Hard reset is an option but I would like to avoid it if possible. I have read that if I delete the related whatsapp folder from data/data folder somehow then it will fix the issue. Is there any way I could access and delete that folder without being rooted or if someone has any other solution to my problem.
Any help is much appreciated

Same thing happened to me, Did you enable ART? Because that's what caused my errors (force closing). After switching back to Dalvik and trying to re-install, i was getting -24 error on the play store. I rebooted a few times and left it for a few hours. Tried again and it worked.
Whatsapp is i believe in-compatible with ART.

Okay, As for as i know, it did fix itself when i rebooted a few times and after a while it just worked.
Things i also tried that might have helped. Clear cache for the playstore which you tried. i would do this again after you switched back to Dalvik. and make sure whatsapp is uninstalled before switching to Dalvik. Once you switch back and have cleared cache from the playstore, try to re-install Whatsapp.
As for the backup, on your phone is a whatsapp folder that has a backup of your messages and photos etc. When you re-install whatsapp it'll pick that up and restore your stuff. There is no need to delete that folder.
I Hope that fixes it for you.

It didnt work. I had to factory reset my phone eventually and wasted my evening doing all the restores, I wish Android had a seamless backup system something like that of Apple's. Helium/Titanium/mybackup, all of them have some kind of flaws

That what you are looking for would be a nandroid backup made in a custom recovery, that restores everything. But not possible without root.
Hi,
I have the same problem. Error -24 if I want to install Whatsapp from Google Play Store. Local installation after downloading the APK from Whatsapp gives also an error (app not installed).
Tried several times to delete the cache and setting of the Play Store app and the Google Framework. Followed by restarts of the phone. Until now I was NOT succesful.
As far as I read on other forums, the problem is, that in data/data/ already exists a Whatsapp-directory and therefore Whatsapp doesn't want to install. You could delete this directory, but only if you are rooted. I avoided this step until now, because it's a new phone with warranty and after rooting, all data ist wiped.
I also tried adb to delete this directory, but same effect. Because the phone is not rooted, I can't remove this directory by remote shell.
Is there no way to clean up such remains WITHOUT root?

If you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup to convert it to a system app or you can use ES File Explorer with root explorer enabled to manually push it to your /system/app folder then boot to recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik/Art cache then reboot to system.
You can also use adb to adb push it to /system/app folder.

but will titanium backup survive factory reset?
do any one know if you can also move the settings to specific locations to avoid them being deleted? for airdroid, or google prey or any other app that can track?
for airdroid the apk and the lib files hat to be moved to system folders and it stays after a factory reset, but anything that looses the settings over a factory reset is pretty much useless for stolen devices, the first step a thief takes is factory reset and format the device. all aps on play store is as good as nothing when it comes to recovering a stolen device. :silly:

Titanium Backup will back up whatever apps, app data and settings that you want it to.
You can use Titanium Backup to make itself a system app, it won't get removed by the factory reset, then just use it to restore everything that you backed up.
There is plenty of information about all of this all over XDA and all over the internet if you'll just take the time to do some searching. Get off your butt and get to looking and you'll see.
As for the device being stolen, there are apps that you can install on the device that can be used to lock the device or wipe the device or even track the device to its location or last known location, whichever of those apps you use to secure your device can also be made into system apps using Titanium Backup. Then if its stolen and wiped the apps will still be there.
It isn't rocket science, why are you over thinking and complicating it?

hi, i'm not trying to over complicating it, the thing is that i tried moving aps like google prey and airdroid that can locate a device to the system folders but when i factory reset the device, the apps are there but the configuration of the aps is gone, i want the configuration to stay alive with the aps, because thieves just factory reset the device at the moment they steal it and then you kiss your device good bye, at least if i can get the configuration to stay alive then i have a 50% chance against thieves, at the moment the chance is next to none.
the reason i ask is to not waste time testing things that some one already know, i searched but don't find good tutorials on that, and i'm not sure if Titanium Backup will work for that, i was expecting some one knowing the software like Titanium Backup can tel me that if i do convert an app to a system app with Titanium, that the system app and its configuration will sirvive a reset and not just the app.
i will test Titanium Backup later today when i have some free time, thanks

Factory reset removes all data and settings when you factory reset even for system apps, there is no way to protect that data from a factory reset. You can back it up and restore it but you can't prevent it from being wiped.
There is an alternative though, you can remove the recovery, then turn USB debugging off then password/PIN protect your system settings app.
Removing recovery ensures that they can't use recovery to factory reset.
Turning off USB debugging ensures that they can't flash the device with PC or use adb/fastboot because PC won't recognise the device.
Password/PIN protecting your system settings app prevents them from getting into your system settings so they can't factory reset from settings.
The one issue with this setup is that if your device encounters an issue where it won't boot or bootloops then even YOU won't be able to fix it because you won't have recovery and you won't be able to connect to PC because you won't be able to get into settings to turn USB debugging back on to be able to flash it.
Research these things to verify its safe to do on your device because all devices are different and things are different depending on the device in question.

Not friendly

when you make a backup of apps, it doesn't show?
Format everything and start over installing a new system image. Most likely is a virus app man

Made a factory reset to see if it would take it away and it didn't, installed other rom and it was finally gone.
Still I'm intrigued on what the hell was that and how it got there

Most probably it was a virus app. There a lot of ways to get it installed in your phone( clicking on the wrong ad for example) and they are really hard to remove. The best way is to format the entire partition, in this case /system
