On my mobile device g2, the developers recently switched to caf kernels and users have noticed dramatic performance so I was wondering why no one has tried this or is that a Qualcomm cop set thing only?

CAF is a custom Linux kernel branch in place to support Qualcomm hardware. By using a potentially heavily customized kernel (while AOSP Android uses the main Linux kernel), custom kernel developers will have to effectively maintain two separate instances of their customizations.

As of right now, what is holding us back from porting gingerbread to our sidekicks? Is it drivers? Or a 2.3 kernel that runs? I need a list of what needs to be done exactly.

See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557094
And, here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/22310-wipcm7-for-sidekick-4g/
Hope that helps!
Thank you, but I've seen both of those and followed them to the end. I'm looking for a specific list of what is needed to port gingerbread to our device. As in i may take up the task of porting it
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA
Would probably be a good idea to continue where windixxi left off since hes the closest person to get ginger working on our phone.
i think i remember Sduvick explaining that the drivers for this device are not exactly generic, so we really need an official Gingerbread kernel from Samsung. i'm pretty sure he tried porting a gb kernel from another device, but without updated drivers for the SK4G, it was basically impossible. that's how i understand it anyway.
Thank you yogi for the info and yes pintek im aware of windxixi great work but i cant figure out his github at all. Its not labeled well.. so more or less its a drivers issue?

Basically? That's what I understood as well.
So instead of trying to port drivers we would have to write new drivers in theory since we don't have a source to build from?

It's no small job. Here's sduvick's assessment of the issue:

Thanks for the reading orange. Gave me the idea that the kernel is going to have to be a makeshift mix and match type thing from kernels from multiple phones.

I agree.
As mentioned previously, maybe windixxi can provide some insight as well.
You're probably going to need some experience and knowledge of coding (i.e. C, Python, Java) and access to a Linux rig of some sort as well..

I recommend installing a hard drive specifically for your Linux environment and using the bios to switch between your boot OS.
But, I also have Ubuntu installed inside of VirtualBox. It's a bit slow, but it works inside of Windows.
so awesome that Samsung are such *****es about this haha
Sounds like i may be in need of a better computer. Ill see what i can do with what i have and start looking into kernels with stuff we need

I think there's a kernel guide here you could look at.
A OC/UV Kernel would be fabulous.

I might try that to get me back into the groove of things, things are going slow with classes though so nobody should get their hopes up yet. But if i manage to buil an oc/uv kernel sucessfully, then my next project will be working on a gingerbread kernel. Ill keep you guys posted in the weeks to come.

If you (or other SK4G developers) are interested, I may be able to arrange a build server.
As in a place to host the kernels we build?

ASUS has uploaded the kernel source code at http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_Infinity_TF700T/#download (but not the firmware image, yet)
Dunno if we have any kernel devs here but I will look into compiling it tomorrow

If you don't know how to mess with a kernel don't touch it. You could ruin your device. Just install roms and don't worry about it. The Rom will include a kernel and flash it for you

Can someone explain me why such a High-End Device like the TF700 with all the latest ****, still runs Linux Kernel 2.6 ?
I was Realy wondering about. My GNex runs 3.0 Kernel since a year and newer Linux Kernels have so much useful and performance optimizing things on it.
Any Infos if the Tablet get a newer Linux Kernel with the JB Update?

There's an entire thread about that.
tl;dr: it's nVidia's fault.
also need these instructions,
Im new on nexus 5 forum so im sorry if i havent read some of these.
I wanted to know if CF rooting, i can underclock my device so i could save battery? And yeah i havent rooted my n5 yet. I need an easier way :/ those adb drivers driving me nuts with my windows xp(i know i broke my laptop with win7)
So yeah can i? I also wanted to try the display control(color changing) so does cf rooting do it?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Hi,
You should read what CF-Root does: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/nexus-5-cf-auto-root-t2507211.
It only unlocks your Bootloader and root your device, it's not something to control the kernel (CPU) settings.
To underclock and use the coulour control you need an app (easier) and a custom kernel that includes the colour control feature, see the dev sections.
For battery life you should take a look at your use, settings and apps if you have a "bad" battery life, maybe something is draining your battery as unusual (it depends what is your battery life actually with what kind of use).
Can i install custom recovery with cf root? All these drivers are making me nuts. They arent doing well with windows xp :/

You need to flash the custom recovery via fastboot...
However, once you are rooted, you can use Flashify to flash things!

Just get the drivers fixed. If you run into trouble whilst modding your phone, you'll need your computer working with drivers to fix it so it's best to address that issue first. If you can't get the drivera working, DON'T ROOT. There are no useful shortcuts.

I don't use PA, so I'm not sure. However, the PA team has made a complete overhaul in their approach towards the rom. That's why you can't see any specific PA rom settings anywhere.
Besides that, the align thing needs to be done either at source or by decompiling the systemui.apk afaik.

With great difficulty.
You should look at building it from the PA sources on their github instead.

You will need to install linux to start preferably on a machine as dual boot or stand alone or in a virtual machine.
Do a google search for building android roms from source on github. It'll have way more info on how to do it than I could possible type out for you here.
It'll be quite journey for you
You need to clone some repos on git and then you can start to build for the TF700.

I was just looking around in the asopa legacy git and saw that they already have a device tree for the tf201, would it be less work to edit that to make it compatible with the tf700 than forking from cm?

Probably not, depending on how old it is, but you can use it as a reference. Also compare the TF201 trees of PA and CM to see if there are any PA-specific things to be done.
Hi guys.!!
By any chance, can we expect Android's Lollipop running on our very own Nexus S.?
I know this device is way old enough, but still any possibility for custom ROMs.!?
Hope we get the taste from at least a couple of them.!!!
