Hi! I unlocked my Z3 without backupping, so I lost the drm keys. I know there is a way to fix it on the part of camera, sound, etc. But will the Sony upgrades come as normal?

Hi,
Pardon me for saying this, but it's never a good idea to unlock your phone without making a backup beforehand. AFAIK, Sony upgrades will not come to unlocked phones as normal, so I would advice you to make a backup now and reset the device to the factory settings. I know that's a pain in the ass and a hell of a job, but IMO this is the only way to "repair" your device. If this does not work for you, alas you have to reset your device entirely.
kindest regards. kuzibri

Do not know for sure, but I know that resetting your device to factory settings, gives you back your original Z3, so probably also your drmkeys and your factory warranty, cause when you unllock your device, you loose the warranty anyway.

I thought if you re-locked the bootloader you can use PC Companion or Sony Update Service to repair to stock. Not sure if it restores drm or camera stuff.
I'll be getting the Z3 in a couple of days. Some things I want to check because I've been away from Sony phones for a while(last one I had was an Xperia S).
So to root it is still recommended to downgrade to Kitkat and root using this method, as well as recovery? That procedure will not break my DRM keys(I remember unlocking bootloader caused that on my Xperia S). Afterwards I can just flash a .zip file and update to the latest 5.1 ROM?
One other thing; before I start tempering with my phone in any way, is it possible to back up DRM keys/EFS partition or whatever without root? Someone please link me some guide which will get me completely backed up. I know my DRM keys are safe until I unlock my bootloader(which I won't do) but I'd still like to back up while everything is stock, you never know.

Yes, that method will work.
As soon as you have root and a custom recovery, you can back up everything. With Backup TA, it's possible to back up and restore the DRM partition.

And now for my own question.
What's the deal with the Z3's kernel and recoveries? I'm on a rooted 5.1.1 without an unlocked bootloader, but with TWRP and CWM from XZDualRecovery.
Why do you need to unlock the device to flash a kernel? How is the kernel attached to the bootloader and why does XZDR work, even providing two recoveries? Is the main ROM image just modified so it will can load the recovery before Android itself and the recovery partition is intact? How are kernels and recoveries connected? I see all kernel threads mentioning included recoveries.
This is really weird, but I came from a Galaxy Nexus where the recovery partition was separate from the system partition and where flashing kernels was a normal thing. Kernels and recovery had absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Hi,
why do you want to unlock your new Z3, thereby loosing your warranty, to downgrade to Kitkat? I just would suggest to use Lolllipop for a while on your new Z3 before making that decision. I have Lollipop also, and although I had to get used to it, it's way far better that Kitkat. Just my 2 cents.

I am not going to unlock my bootloader at all. I'll only downgrade to kitkat so I can root the phone and install custom recovery, afterwards I'll flash stock LP. I don't think you can root LP without using Kingroot, which sends some info to chinese server which I do not want.

Yep, I know. But one day he might do that, and while he's at rooting, extra 2 minutes won't hurt. But you are right in a way I should have mentioned that
Big help required please
Mine wont charge beyond 1%.
I plug in the charger with phone off and the red notification light comes on followed by the Sony Xperia startup screen, after about 4 seconds the red light goes off and does not come on again. The screen then changes to an image of a large battery displaying 1%. When I press and hold the power button the device turns on as normal but given that the battery is only 1% it doesnt even last a minute. I have had it upto 12% at one point (not sure how as I didnt do anything differently) and the power drained that quickly when turned on it went down 1% about every 10 seconds.
Im on T-Mobile using a D6603 stock unmodified in any way. I have tried hold vol up and power button, hold vol down and also I have pressed the yellow button beside the sim card. I have had it on charge nearly 2 full days and Im now at breaking point. I appreciate I may be due an update but as you can see my phone says different. Pictures included

Hi,
nasty problem. Guessing the charger is connected to a wall outlet:
1. Did you already tried a different/new USB cable, if not, please do so and see if the problem is solved?
2. Did you already tried to charge with the phone on?
3. If these things do not work, you probably have a battery issue and have to send it in for a new one.
good luck and kindest regards, kuzibri
Thanks for your reply
Yes it has been plugged into the wall, laptop and car charger both turned on and off.
I have tried the supplied charger and a number of others. I thought it was gonna be a case of sending it away. Thats not good given that the phone isnt even 6 months old. do you suppose its the battery itself? If so surely i could replace it myself?

Hi guys,
i'm somewhat of a noob when it comes to Android devices, so please excuse my stupid questions.
First some facts about my device:
ROOT: Enabled
BOOTLOADER: Locked and not changeable
ROM: Latest available official release
(hope that helps at least a bit)
#1: Is it possible to bypass the bootloader lock via root? If so, how?
#2: If there is no way to bypass the lock, is it possible to modify the rom anyway? Because i want to add the swapon/swapoff functionality to expand the available ram via a swap partition on my external SD card. (already checked via terminal if swapon/swapoff is available)
Thank you in advance for your help. I hope there's a solution to my problem.

You're right - your phone isn't allowed a bootloader unlock.
Without bootloader unlock, you can't change ROMs, but you can install ICS, which is a bit faster than Jelly Bean, even slightly more than CyanogenMod. In fact, even with an unlocked bootloader, I'm using ICS. Here's how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579233
Now, you said you're a noob when it comes to Android, so here's how to flash an FTF:
This process will remove all installed apps, contacts and settings. Any music, stuff on the internal storage (the one for music etc.) or the microSD will be preserved.
0. Make sure you're on Windows 7 or below. For some reason, this doesn't work with Windows 8 or 8.1, so you'll have to get a 7 PC somehow.
1. Download Androxyde's Flashtool here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746 (use the unrestrict.li link, it's better)
2. Install it. By default, it is installed to C:\Flashtool. Open this folder, and then the "drivers" one. You'll see a driver setup file. Install the Flashtool and Fastboot drivers (in the list, they're on the bottom).
3. Now go back to the Flashtool folder, and open "firmwares". Put your FTF file here.
4. Open Flashtool. Click the lightning icon. Ensure that Flashmode is selected, and press OK. Choose the C1605 11.1.A.0.68 file, and press Flash.
5. When it tells you to, turn off your phone. Plug in the USB cable into your computer. Hold volume down (do not hold the power button), and (point of no return now) plug the phone into the USB cable connected to your phone. The notification light will glow green, and hopefully everything will start flashing. When the Flashtool window tells you to disconnect your phone and turn it on, do so. Set it up, and you're on ICS!
If you want to go back to Jelly Bean, download this FTF: https://www.mediafire.com/?3fmmkbmlqtjd6cy and put it into the "firmwares" folder. Now follow the guide step 4 onward, but select "11.3.A.2.23" for Jelly Bean.
Whew, long post.
So, in principle i downgrade the device to ics with an unlocked bootloader and then can flash a custom rom that is jb based, with all features i need to expand the ram?

No, ICS won't enable you to unlock your bootloader OR install CWM OR install a custom ROM. ICS is faster than any other custom ROM (other than XboosT, which is basically ICS on steroids), so if you can't have custom ROMs, the next best thing is ICS.
Another noob's question:

But UltraGamerHD is still using his phone (in fact, he's making CM11...), right?
Right now, I uninstalled Xposed, rebooted, installed Xposed, rebooted. Nothing called a brick (although I did lose a cool Xposed mod for a reboot). Well, whatever. Uninstalling doesn't brick.
In fact, the problem in the topic is either:
1. The phone hard-bricking, which is not related to Xposed at all.
OR
2. The phone's battery being discharged to 0%, to the point where the phone cannot turn itself on and start charging.

I did brick it once, I went to the Orange UK store in my local town and he said he used software similar to PC Companion.

S-OFF (unlock bootloader) in Sony terms is can be done by visit http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com and follow the instructions. make sure you test by enter *#*#7378423#*#* on dialer and then, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
dunno if someone already build TWRP for Xperia E, but there is CWM for Xperia E

Sorry, in [HTC One V] terms, S-Off not only requires the bootloader to already be unlocked, but then you can also edit the boot, radio and other partitions that are still locked while the bootloader is unlocked.
And that phone number is very helpful, thanks! I'll have to test it Wednesday, when my phone is supposed to arrive
And about building TWRP, I'll do it. I've built several pieces of software for my previous phone, aaaaand I hope it's the same process LOL

You've had a One V? Cool, there's one in the family, still stock, of course.
I think the radio and stuff can be changed even when the bootloader is locked , using Flashtool to flash the firmwares in flash mode. [citation needed] At least the baseband can be changed easily, probably other stuff too.
TWRP has been built for CM10 (actually it's a dual recovery; both CWM and TWRP) by hsr0. Others have been built too, but since our phones have no recovery image, the recovery has to be built into the kernel, and this is the most stable CM10 kernel, I recommend this one. Not sure if there's a stock TWRP, though.

LOL, no. I've just started my first project, and hardly anybody here knows what it is.
Before unlocking your phone's bootloader, be sure to root it (many guides to root it with a locked bootloader here) and backup the TA partition: this partition has some DRM keys that are removed once you unlock the bootloader. I'm not sure what they do, but you can check whether the DRM keys are there or not, so if you take it to Sony, you can reflash TA, unroot, and they'll honour the warranty.

Yes.
And also make sure, you've got a few ftf files.
In case you want to know in HTC terms: FTFs are like RUUs, but safer to flash - so much that we've been using Xperia E dual's FTF files on the Xperia E single.

You know, I've been liking you (and a couple of other forum members) more and more, as I read your (and their) posts.
Another tip: don't, ever let the battery level on your phone go down below 15%. Because when the battery goes down to 0%, it's pretty difficult to wake it up - I just had to wake up mine.

Hello guys,
I just want to be sure before losing warranty...
If i root my phone and backup DRM Keys / TA Partition, will i be able to restore everything (stock rom and all functions (x-reality and camera optimizations) + drm keys) after joining open device program and "installing" recovery mode (http://developer.sonymobile.com/201...for-a-range-of-unlocked-xperia-devices-video/) and/or installing Android M Preview (http://developer.sonymobile.com/201...-xperia-devices-in-sonys-open-device-program/), or will this "destroy" those functions?
And if i restore ta partitions, does it mean everything is like "factory state" and even regain my warranty?
Just want to be 100% sure
Greets Xorg
Nobody done this...? ?
Basically, you need to root your device before unlocking bootloader and then back up the TA partition.
After that, you can unlock bootloader and play around with some of the available custom roms like CM.
Then, if you flash stock sony firmware and restore the drm keys, I guess there would be no problem in claiming warranty unless you hard-bricked your device.
BTW, I had unlocked my bootloader and restored my drm keys for like 2-3 times and the process worked everytime (at least) for me.
Hope this helps.

The latest root method for the Samsung Galaxy S7/S7E (AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon/Sprint)
Does not void warranty and also does not trip the KNOX counter.
In order to remove root (un-root) you can flash the original firmware in Odin.
Also to answer any further questions the root does work on the latest T-Mobile update for the S7
(G930TUVU3APG1).
This root works on all Marshmallow versions on Android on the T-Mobile S7

So, this works? I'm reading a lot of comments on the page you linked saying that users are having bootloop issues and issues across the board... Nothing I read in the comments section suggested ANYONE got this to work flawlessly. Are you on the T-Mobile variant of the S7? If so, can you post a video of your phone, with clear root and explain in depth your step by step procedure? I literally just got this phone and don't want to **** up a phone I'm paying on.
Thanks a bunch! All the files are downloaded and ready to go on my PC. Just waiting to confirm this will work.

I apologize for replying so late ... Ive been busy. But this does work 100%, only a backup is required(before root because root will most likely put you in a bootloop and you have to factory reset after)... Hopefully my video will be out before July 30. But, before you root I also want you to be aware that the root uses an eng kernal which is not meant for daily use and causes lag, but you can optimize the phone to work as it did when it was stock.
Month later
Hi KillerClaw,
So it's been a month since your last post. Is this still preferred root for this device? My device encrypted storage upon setup wizard, don't know if i hit something or it did on own. Should I unencrypt before attempting root?
Thank you!

It is the only root method so far. It is not required but you can unencrypt before rooting. Rooting while already encrypted won't cause any harm since /data is encrypted not /system . But I still recommend unencrypting so you don't run into any issues.
Does this work for the latest November 1st update APK1?
Hello, I too would like to know if this is still the current root method and if there have been any changes?
GeorgeNYer and kimber1982: The short answer is "no".
I did try this on my phone, and it acted like it worked (I could get the unlocked padlock with "custom") but I could never actually grant anything root access. That was when it was usable. The first round didn't get stuck in a bootloop. After I figured out that I didn't have root, I wiped the phone and started again, and again didn't get a boot loop, but did a factory reset anyway. After that point, it was too laggy to even try to use. I fought with it for a couple of hours trying to figure out a work around, but got fed up and DLed the APK1 stock firmware from Sammobile, and Odin'd the phone back to stock.
This is the first time I've used an non hacked phone since my iPhone 3G way back when. It feels really weird.

No, no Knox flags. Technically the engineer boot is official, even if done in a not so official way. Once I flashed back to stock APK1, it looks like it did right out of the box.
Sadly enough.

What I listed is what I was able to do. I'm not certain it ever had root access. When it showed "custom" at boot, I couldn't grant anything root access. When it acted more laggy, like was described, the lag was so bad, it wasn't usable. Mind you, these instructions were written prior to the APK1 firmware that was on my G930T from new.

I can confirm that this method does indeed work. You need to be careful and follow the instructions, but it will root your device. You may notice lag after rooting. Just install a kernel tool and set it to on-demand.

Is the zs551kl officially bootloader-unlockable and able to be rooted?
If that's the case, it would mean it's a much better phone than many of the latest flagships: sdcard, jack, FM radio, dual SIM, larger battery, stereo speakers, more complete GPS, good resolution screen, etc.
I haven't seen anything yet, but I assume it's coming. I don't think there will be a lot of roms though.

No, because , like I said before...until we have a Rooted kernel available to download or a custom rom to install there is no point on install TWRP or unlock the bootloader....I'm pretty sure that in the next months there are going to be Roms and Custom Kernels (Rooted), it's too soon the phone was released on October (the past month).
About what made me chose this phone...it was
- Unlockeable Bootloader
- Snapdragon 835 as CPU
- 6 GB of Ram
- Good camera
- ASUS it's a good brand.
- FM raido
The phone its pretty damn fast...multitasking is amaizing...the battery dont seems so well like my, now broken, LG G5 but at least it runs for 1 day and a few hours but maybe its due the "new phone effect" (you play with it more the first days of use XD)
Magisk should give you root as long as bootloader can be unlocked.
I'll watch this space for root as I'm about to go get one myself because Snapdragon 835, then I have 15 days to test it on one game to decide whether to keep or return, lol.

That's what I thought: once you unlock the bootloader and ADB-flash TWRP, you should be able to install SuperSU or Magisk (with corresponding manager app) and be good to go. So please test and let us know if you can.

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm not going to unlock my bootloader right now....the reason the phone its new (and expensive), there isn't a single rom to install or kernel to flash (on my LG G5 you have to flash another kernel in order to have root, but maybe that has change).
More importante there isnt any unbrick guide yet if something fails plus my phone it's not being selled on my country so there isn't any kind of warranty or repair service if something fails. WIth 6gb of ram I can deal with some ASUS apps pre installed so I dont need to root it right now.
But like a said before...its a great phone...damn faster one! i'll recommend it.
Even if one wanted to unlock the bootloader to try things out, it is not possible right now anyway.
Tried it with Asus' official unlock app (just got the phone today! :victory, and the app simply crashes before it even gets to talk to the bootloader, so there is currently no way to do it. Fastboot still reports the device as locked.
Maybe I should have tried it before applying the latest OTA update, but oh well!
rblanca has a point though, with no way to restore the phone should something go seriously wrong, I won't try any more exotic methods to try to crack open that bootloader at the moment either. The various guides that float around on the web look dangerous at best.

Root!
Good news!
Asus fixed the unlock app ( https://www.asus.com/de/Phone/ZenFone-4-Pro-ZS551KL/HelpDesk_Download/ ) and bumped it to version 9.1.0.0
It now successfully unlocks the device's bootloader. I went ahead and did it since I already voided my warranty when trying to unlock it with the previous, bugged version anyway.
Works fine, fastboot reports the bootloader as unlocked. Device contents got factory-wiped as per announced in the app, so make sure to back up your things if you wanna do it. :silly:
