[Completed] [Q] Nexus 5 display problem - very pale and discoloured - XDA Assist

Hi guys!
I have a nexus 5 which had just developed a nasty display issue. Last week the screen. Went quite pale and off colour. I thought it was possibly the yellow tint issue but it seems to be different. After a recharge overnight it seemed to go away but is back with a vengeance.
The screen is very pale, and there is a pink stripe down either side. It may even be a box right around the edge i can't quite tell. There also looks like there may be a blotch at the top that's mostly hidden by the notification bar, which looks a little like the bleed you.get on an old LCD screen if its damaged. Touch works fine. I'm wondering if it could be a hardware issue, the connection of the screen to the board, or if it's something that could be fixed with a kernel or root app.
This issue originally appeared when the phone was not rooted and running factory lollypop, I rooted to try the yellow tint fix of Franco's but I don't think that's the problem.
Thanks guys
Details attached

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Please see your device's specific forum here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5 But you most likely have a hardware issue.

[Q] Uneven colors from top to bottom

I just started using the Expanded Desktop MOD (No Navbar) and noticed that the bottom 8-10mm of the screen has a yellowish tint which isn't really visible on dark backgrounds like the Navbar.
It's clearly visible in apps that use the light theme such as Chrome, Hangouts.
The easiest way to check would be to open the Google keyboard in reverse landscape mode (volume buttons facing upwards) and compare the color from edge to edge.
Fortunately, my N5 doesn't have the overall yellow tint issue which my friend's N5 does and a lot of users have mentioned here.
My question is, is there anyone who has a perfect device? No overall yellowish screen and no uneven colors issue that I have.
I don't want to go through a bunch of RMAs and never get a perfect screen.
Please check your phone's keyboard in reverse landscape mode and post if you see this issue or if the colors are uniform.
Thanks.
My screen has a very slight yellow tint too at the bottom 10mm (the rest is fine, no yellow tint), but it is minor.

It's bad quality control if that's the case. I've had it for almost a month so don't think it's going to get better.
Anyone else has this issue?
I've got an N5 32GB that doesn't have the yellowish tint to the screen. Out of the few people I know that have N5's, none of them have that problem. I am wondering if the slight shadow effect is what is being referred to int his thread. Both the top and bottom have a slight shadowing effect on the edges of the screen with the Google Experience launcher. I haven't checked to see if you can turn this off but you can in Nova Launcher. When I get in from work, I'm going to round up some backgrounds to check. If anyone has any they think illustrate the issue best, please post them and I'll check back and try them with my device. For now, I recommend trying the Nova Launcher and turning off the shadowing to get a clear idea of what is going on with the edges of the screen.
Edit: Using Google Search and Hangouts, I don't see any yellowish anything on the edges of my screen regardless of the orientation. I also asked a co-worker to have a look as well and he didn't see any variation in the screen color on the edges, yellow or any other. The launchers I tried was Nova Launcher beta3 and the Google Experience launcher. Both yielded the same results.
Edit 2: It should be noted that I am not using the Expanded Desktop Mod and my ROM is stock with root and CWM for recovery.

Yes, i have this issue too. It is my second N5 (first one was a RMA) and i noticed it at the weekend when i flashed Purity ROM and checked a blank website using Chrome with Immersion/Expanded desktop mode enabled. Hmm. Besides that, my second Nexus 5 is near than perfect and basing on my research it is possible, that is glue that has to harden out - so it could disappear some day....? I donĀ“t want to RMA it a third time.
I have also noticed, that the spot is getting stronger when the Nexus is on heat, e.g. with benchmarking or gaming. Weird. But that could be subjective.
I think i will have a look how it goes and than i will decide how to proceed.

Are you all still with first batch phones? I had a 16GB (black) 310k that I sold once my 311k 32GB (black) arrived. I didn't have any issues with the 310k either but it seems a lot more people have had various issues with the 310k over anything later.

thats up to u..my n5 was really yellowish..it has been improving after using it more often
Thank you for your help. I think, I will have a look at and see how it goes.
Was your whole screen yellowish, or like mine I a small area?
Gesendet von meinem Nexus 5 mit Tapatalk
I run Immersion Mode and yes the bottom where the keys were have a yellow tint
Same issue here, but mine has almost fixed itself with just using it today. Device has been used for less than a week. I'm hoping what little is still there corrects itself too. Was driving me nuts. It's all I noticed. I attribute it to the glue curing.

Yes, i am looking and searching for it every time i use the phone.. And yes, that is something that drives one nuts.
I will give it a go like i stated before, and when it is not getting better, i will ask Google for a replacement.
I have taken a photo, i hope you can see it..
Hi TR2N,
It has been a while since your post, but did your yellow tint on the top of your screen ever fade or did you eventually RMA or just live with it? I am dealing with the same issue and the tech at Google never heard about anything related to glue drying.
Thanks,
Jason

I did but the replacements had the same issue and were more yellow overall.
I've had my original phone this whole time. The yellow tint eventually goes away as you keep using it and the glue dries up.

is there a fix for yellow tint?

hello everyone!
ive been browsing through XDA's nexus5 forums for hours and hours but i feel like my question hasn't really been answered so far. i cant post in the development forum with the faux app thread (i have less than 10posts which are required) so i'm posting in this sub forum.
i got my n5 yesterday and it has yellow tint. the colors look washed out too. question:
has anybody been able to fix his yellow tint with faux app + faux kernel/franco's kernel? so is it only a software issue (bad calibration) or is it a hardware issue which cant be fixed on our side?
everything else seems to be fine so i dont really want to RMA it now and get 3 other faulty RMAs with dead pixels or rattling buttons like some other people on XDA.
thanks in advance!
How yellow are we talking? The Nexus 5s are noticeably more warm than most other phones out there, but they are more accurate when it comes to color reproduction. Unless it's MAJOR, then I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get used to it. Then there's this... which I don't know much about.

My colors also looked a little more yellow after the update to 4.4.2, can anyone else confirm this ?

it's definitely noticeable and quite annoying. the colors also look washed out and the entire display isn't as sharp as it should be (i think this is related to the general color/gamma problem). compared the color to my nexus S and you could directly see the difference. but i would say that ive seen much worse displays on pictures in the defects thread and other threads on here and that's why i'm hoping that it's fixable
yes, that's the app that ive linked in my first post. i'd be very happy if someone who has/had yellow tint and tested this app could post in here :fingers-crossed:

Samsung displays are known to be VERY oversaturated. I came from the S3 and I thought it was a great looking display. When I got my N5 I thought it was okay, nothing great. Now I love it. If I look at the S3/S4 it hurts my eyes it looks so bad!
It seems to be an issue that's affecting a really small subset of devices. The screen on my phone isn't yellow at all - in fact, it's just about perfect. I've read that people have been able to fix it by installing Franco's kernel, which makes sense because my screen gets too blue when I install it. If you make a yellowish display bluer, it should look normal.

[Q] Burnout pixel?

Hi Guys, Edit: Sorry the title should say: Burnt out pixel.
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, the search function on XDA never works for me for some reason, and I can't find any help via Google.
I've noticed a small faint blue circle about 2 inches down from the top of my screen. It's at it's most visible when I have an app or webpage open with a white background. And, if I put the slightest bit of pressure on the screen, and I mean normal use type pressure i.e scrolling etc, the blue circle looks burned around the edges. Hardware isn't my strong point but this seems like a burnt out pixel of some kind. Has anyone had the same experience with their Nexus 5, or indeed any other device?
Just to be clear - The phone hasn't been dropped, physically burned or anything like that. I only noticed this last night but now I know it's there it's driving me mad. I'm not sure if I should contact Google for an RMA. They've already replaced a faulty nexus 5 for me once about a month ago, would they replace the device a second time? I'd assume they'd have to with the device being under warranty and all.
I really appreciate any help and advice. Thanks.
Problem solved. It's a dead pixel. Google are replacing the device.

Yellowing Of Screen on Corners?

So i was just browsing You Tube when I noticed that at the edge of my screen there was a yellowish tint to the white that it should be, so I brought up a completely white image on Google to find that 3 of the cormers had this yellow tint on them and in fact now that I have spotted it is quite noticable. I know the picture I've added is very poor so if you guys can't see it then I'll add another one. Anyone else experiencing this?

Usually that's the glue isn't it? Should vanish as you use the tablet, give it a week or so and if it is still there, take it back.
Well Ive had the tablet since it released so I think I might have to take it back
I've been noticing this lately as well. It started with the bottom left corner, and now it's also in the top right. It's rather distracting with light backgrounds.
Same thing after using the tablet for a month
You guys might just want to RMA your tablets. Although it's only an aesthetic issue, NVIDIA should allow replacements for that kind of thing. Is the tint extremely noticeable or only when there's a white background?

Annoying yellow spot on display

Hi Guys,
New to this forum. I recently sold my one plus due to the exact reason but this was at the bottom of the display. Many have said that it would disappear over time but after 6 months, the yellow band was still haunting me. Gave up because of how infuriating it was and sold it. Got this beast, loving it but I noticed straight away at the top left of the display there was a yellow spot which spreads slightly to the centre. Im not familiar with the characteristics of certain displays as I am aware of the different kinds of displays these two devices use. Just wondering, would this problem disappear over time ?? I saw this post on this particular "fix" sites, which says that it will over time given the glue dispersion from heat and what not. BUT, im just afraid (skeptic here) it would end up like my one plus. Im trying to avoid going back to the reseller as this phone was purchased from a grey importer. Any input from any of you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

a lot of people have yellow spots . the spots are mostly visible in 0% brightness and grey backround. Install dead pixel detect and fix and choose gray from the menu. if the result is not good contact with lg service center to change the screen.
you mentioned also oneplus. I also had oneplus before. it had 2 issues the first one was the led light bleeding and the yellow banding. the led bleeding is only visible down due to the position of led lights of the phone and cannot be fixed. the yellow band was due to the glue that didn't properly fixed. I personally had this issue but after some months It was fixed by the use of the phone. I also let it 2-3 times under direct sunlight for 20-25 minutes.

Just wondering, would it work if id put the Flex 2 under the sun as well? The discolouration is only noticeable, like you said, on Grey background.. wonder if this would go away over time.. thanks again!! :crying::crying:

you can try it but I don't know if the glue is the issue. on the other hand lg has a very good service maybe it can replace your screen if the problem is so obvious

hey, i managed to exchange for another one. Though there is some improvement, the yellow spots are still apparent albeit less noticeable and only in Grey background. Did your's disappear, or at least improve overtime? How is it? I have tried using a 38W UV lamp for nearly an hour and the yellow spots are still there..

you may need to try a lot of screens to find a good one lol. Mine also has some yellow spots visible in grey but I can live with it... I have still 23 months to think about it (warranty)
