How to change apk resources?(for personal fun and learning experience) - Other Tools & General Discussion

Hello!I am new here, been reading every now and then,so decided to register and ask my question. So I want to change the sounds of a talking battery app.I used Gordon freemans HEV suit files and replaced the original ones, checking the encoding of the originals and replacing them.I signed the apk,but the sounds wont play.I downloaded extra voice apk from google play, added the sound there and signed, still no joy.Is it possible that the app has some sort or md5 check for the audio files, and it can see they are not genuine?I am doing this for my own fun and learning experience!Any help is welcome and appreciated !

Greatly appreciated. thanks.

Two questions well above my head

Hey guys, two fairly general questions related to my phone which I haven't been able to find an answer to anywhere else, hopefully someone here can fill me in
1. Does anybody know how to change an icon within an APK file? I'm trying to change Google Search's icon because it offends my eyes. I put my new png file into the APK with WinRAR, attempted to install it and it tells me "installation failed". Am I missing a step?
2. I'm using an Incredible S Sense-based Android build on my HD2 but haven't been able to find an answer to this one on the HD2 forum. I'm trying to turn off the hardware key backlights permanently because they annoy me and I don't need them - I've tried apps like AdjBrightness, which turn the backlights off until the buttons are pressed again. Does anybody know of a persistent method to disable button backlights in Android 2.2?
Thanks, if anyone could help, you'll get my thanks, these have been bugging me for a while
No answer for question 2 with me....
As for question 1:
in order to install a system app, it my be uninstalled first.
i.e. uninstall your current app, then install your new one.
But yes, just modifying the images in the res folder will change the icon, just search for the icon image and replace it (but with the same name as the original)

He will also need to sign the apk before installing since he isn't pushing it, doesn't he?
I believe that's my problem - I already did uninstall google search, but my modified apk still won't install and I haven't learned how to abd push yet. Is signing an apk something I could do?
Thanks guys

Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
You will be able to decompile the apk, modify whatever you want, then compile and sign it.
If you just modified the icon, you can also paste the apk in the folder place-apk-here-for-signing, open the script.bat, write number 16 to sign and you will have your apk signed, then install it.
Thanks guys! I'll give that a go.
Now, how do I turn off the hardware key backlights...?
Thanks a lot for both of your advice, that did the trick very well and I'm now installed with a new custom icon that's much better. I could have used BetterCut or FolderOrganizer, but that still leaves the big blue block in the app drawer, and you can't have that.
Sorry to pester, but does anybody know anything about disabling hardware button backlights in Android? I know perfection is something we're constantly chasing here at XDA, but this is the last thing I have on my to-do list before my phone is fully optimized for me.
If anybody can help me turn those button backlights off for good, I will be forever thankful. On my deathbed, I will remember your good deed. This struggle against my button backlights has gotten personal - they taunt me every time I read an ebook, every time I watch a movie. No, buttons, I don't need to see you all the time. You insist upon yourselves. For that you must be destroyed.
Ahem. Anyway, anybody have any advice?

[Q] Sony Tablet S Music Player

Hi,
my question is, is there any App outside that looks exactly like the Sony Tablet Media Player?
Or any ROM Leak to dump the apk for our transformer?
I saw the app on the IFA and it looked beautiful.
Sorry, i have no picture of it.
Sincerely yours Steke
You are going to have to wait until the tablet actually comes out of a firmware leaks to rip the music.apk from it. should be ~ the 12th
Also wrong section
I'm also looking for someone to extract the apk from an S2 tablet.
Sony media players looks real nice!
this is the system dump
http:// http://www.4shared.com/file/nC-OMqd9/TabletSsystem.html
please try and port the PlayStation app and the media app
i will give it a try but that links broken
try this link for system dump
www.4shared.com/file/nC-OMqd9/TabletSsystem.html
try this link for tabletS dump(1gb)
www.4shared.com/file/lp2GnnXg/TabletSdump.html
also try and port the home launcher
thanks in advance
So this is a start i know its not the music player you are looking for but it is an improvement over the stock one.
Its the Google music app but it doesn't have that stuttery problem that the one that ships with the transformer has and it feels sooo much smoother
edit again after reboot it looses a reference and loops saying it cant find album art so don't use it
It will get just as glitchy as the stock one after 1 reboot and after 2 it will get smooth agin but it wont load the album art
The app you guys really want that looks awesome is the mediaplayers.apk which i cant get working right now but im asking around for help so we might be able to get it done soonish
Im also going to try to get the browser.apk and the S-launcher2.apk
Edit:also visualiser.apk
ok so i made a thread to try to get everything ported i have done the bootanimation and walla
paper rip already and am working on a theme but the apps are going to take some time and im going to need some help

Maybe we can ask him, that he upload it, or send us a PM.
In our own responsibility.

agree with steke , but why on earth port from another tablet be a impossible thing?!!! it's just a single apk player like google music

I don't know much about Sony systems but take for instance MotoBlur. Most of the custom applications need to be on a Blur ROM to work, they are very much embedded in the system.
Cheers!

everything i have tried to port has depended on librarys and permisions native to the original tablet which are often incompatable with our system i will give it another go tomorrow and see what i can do but no promisses

Nice!
Do you think it would be easier with an ICS Rom, because its open source and maybe, you can combine it or port the lib files to another Rom?
Steke
the fact that it is open sourced does not matter at all the fact is that i dont know how to get past a certain point in the porting process. there are no guides on how to do it and whenever i get a knowledgeable person to help me out they always leave before we are finished. So if someone who has knowledge about all of the steps and all of the troubleshooting could help me out once and help me trouble shoot this i will be able to do it on my own in the future which in turn would enrich the community.
any progress????!!! please people , the only thing that asus tf101 miss , bring it on
no because there are no app devs working on this and im stuck
here is something i ripped that might keep you happy in the meantime
View attachment NemoPlayer.apk-was ripped out of the acer a500 system dump and didn't rely on any libraries or extra permission

My own apk and modifying it question

I have an apk that was created a while back by a developer. I cannot get to the developer and more so I need to find a way to modify it somehow.
I have a list of selections on a drop down list inside the apk and I need to modify the words on a couple of selections on that list.
How do I do this and rebuild into an apk again?
I also need to change the version of the apk in order to upload it back to Google Play with these changes.
How do I do that?
Bill
Use apktool for windows
Someone on another forum just told me about Virtuous Ten Studio. It works great and is very easy to use. I consider this one solved.

You're literally asking for help on how to steal someone else's property?
No, I have got approval from factory itself, they have Chinese manual, which i dont know .. so they said you can do it yourself and they have already given permission agreement for that.

Alright, fair enough. I've done this work myself before.
This should be relatively easy, most of the resources will be in the res folder. You'll need to use APKTool and decompile the APK, edit XML's and replace png's and such.
Sometimes they hard-code strings though and it might be in the smali files.
You will also need to change the package name though. This involves a mass find-and-replace in smali, the Android Manifest XML, and renaming the packages (folders).
You can re-sign the APK yourself with zipsigner once recompiled, that's all you need for Google Play distribution. Apart from a developer account of course.
Appreciate your reply.
But im not technically well versed with this ... any website or video tutorial where step step process is mentioned will be good for me ...

There are plenty out there. The key tool is called "APKTool", try googling for something like "modding resources with APKTool". You will have to learn, there is no shortcut I'm afraid!
Super .. Thanks a lot ..
