Two questions well above my head - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey guys, two fairly general questions related to my phone which I haven't been able to find an answer to anywhere else, hopefully someone here can fill me in
1. Does anybody know how to change an icon within an APK file? I'm trying to change Google Search's icon because it offends my eyes. I put my new png file into the APK with WinRAR, attempted to install it and it tells me "installation failed". Am I missing a step?
2. I'm using an Incredible S Sense-based Android build on my HD2 but haven't been able to find an answer to this one on the HD2 forum. I'm trying to turn off the hardware key backlights permanently because they annoy me and I don't need them - I've tried apps like AdjBrightness, which turn the backlights off until the buttons are pressed again. Does anybody know of a persistent method to disable button backlights in Android 2.2?
Thanks, if anyone could help, you'll get my thanks, these have been bugging me for a while

No answer for question 2 with me....
As for question 1:
in order to install a system app, it my be uninstalled first.
i.e. uninstall your current app, then install your new one.
But yes, just modifying the images in the res folder will change the icon, just search for the icon image and replace it (but with the same name as the original)

He will also need to sign the apk before installing since he isn't pushing it, doesn't he?

I believe that's my problem - I already did uninstall google search, but my modified apk still won't install and I haven't learned how to abd push yet. Is signing an apk something I could do?
Thanks guys

Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
You will be able to decompile the apk, modify whatever you want, then compile and sign it.
If you just modified the icon, you can also paste the apk in the folder place-apk-here-for-signing, open the script.bat, write number 16 to sign and you will have your apk signed, then install it.

Thanks guys! I'll give that a go.
Now, how do I turn off the hardware key backlights...?

Thanks a lot for both of your advice, that did the trick very well and I'm now installed with a new custom icon that's much better. I could have used BetterCut or FolderOrganizer, but that still leaves the big blue block in the app drawer, and you can't have that.
Sorry to pester, but does anybody know anything about disabling hardware button backlights in Android? I know perfection is something we're constantly chasing here at XDA, but this is the last thing I have on my to-do list before my phone is fully optimized for me.
If anybody can help me turn those button backlights off for good, I will be forever thankful. On my deathbed, I will remember your good deed. This struggle against my button backlights has gotten personal - they taunt me every time I read an ebook, every time I watch a movie. No, buttons, I don't need to see you all the time. You insist upon yourselves. For that you must be destroyed.
Ahem. Anyway, anybody have any advice?

Dark Keys for 1.5 Firmware

Does anyone know how to get dark keys application working on the 1.5 firmware (cupcake)
Is it something the app developer needs to do and if so does anyone know where i can reach him to ask
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513772 go here for app <<
it has to be done on the developers side and if you download the program through market the go to its details and scroll down to email developer.
already sent an E-mail to the Dev asking for the source code. He said he was going to get it uploaded.
cheers
Thanks guys
any luck on getting it to works on 1.5 yet?
Someone needs to make a new version of this app. one that doesnt keep flicking on and off like dark keys does. would be nice if it just remembered whether it was on or off and stayed that way until changed.
whats the darks key?black key?
Would it be possible to have a uer option to have the backlight on or off based on the time of the day?
Hm, they disabled a lot of programs abilities to change settings like wifi/gps etc, dont know if this was one of those settings (REALLY hope not since you cant change it in android settings either).
Really need this app working for 1.5 :/

That's a really good idea but we need to get it working with 1.5 first
Anyone seen any updates on this anywhere? His webpage seems quiet as well. Thinking about looking into this myself, but it'd be a lot easier with his code.
Nobody saw the source? It is explicitely posted on google code..
Here is the link:
http://code.google.com/p/darkkeys/
Did not actually see that, but I dont think it's possible with 1.5 firmware, I looked into it a bit myself, trying to construct hardwareservice jar file for 1.5.
//edit, that is, not possible with the normal hardwareservice way, it'll still work fine on rooted phones.
Rename to darkkeys.apk and install normally. Works only on rooted phones for 1.5 unfortunatly, and it's only debug signed.
Upstream bug tracker here : http://code.google.com/p/darkkeys/issues/list?updated=2&ts=1241446083
This is a disaster for white G1s!
Do I really have to root my phone just to be able to see the keyboard? What are Google playing at?

haha thank you so much i have been waiting for this for a LONG TIME!
Seems they changed detection on whether or not the keypad's open a bit as well, I'll see about making it more reliable sometime today.
Attaching new one, same procedure, rename to .apk and install directly.
What's the point in this?

Bronze G1s suffer from the same problem. So here's another vote for "change timeout based on time of day" feature. Preferably something configurable and togglable. Thanks for your hard work, guys!

Actually you are I deleted it because after I deleted the app, it turned into a PM me *wink wink* deal. Discussion is fine, just no posting the actual app or a link to get the app
i wasn't invited, i was curious about how i could get swype on my phone too.

I know, but per a letter from the developers to us, unless swype is native on a device, it should not be posted
i have the swype apk, i was just hoping there was a mod for the g-tablet that would allow swype to install. that wouldn't involve posting a link.

I tried the official beta, as I'm a member, and a SGS version both on my G-Tablet and they install but wont open as the resolution is not supported. If there's a apk that does actually work. I'd love to just KNOW that. and I'll find it myself.
Thanks!
I tried using the swype from my epic but when I installed it and enable it it just FCs. I did use slideit but the keyboard took up most of the screen. Anybody else have any luck?
This is also something I am very interested in and have yet to get it to work.
I made the changes that rothnic suggested in the build.prop, loaded the lib, and dropped the ap in system/app and my tab doesn't see it at all. I've loaded a ' few' different versions on it that install but just fc. I've spent hours on it with no luck yet.
I'm not giving up hope for someone to release and update.zip but I'm not going to bother rothnic about it (anymore) as I'm sure he's working on roms and such. Even if he weren't, he's done more than his share here and I'm sure one of us will get it.
I'm still working it myself and if I make any progress I will surely let everyone know.
Just a reminder we can't post the .apk for swype here, as we don't want the thread pulled, again.

It sounds like you are doing something wrong when copying it over. It should come up under keyboards in settings. You would enable it there, then long press on an input box to switch to it.
I just did this a second time today and can confirm that it works.

yea, I was hoping that was the case but there can't be much that can go wrong. Download it or copy over via usb... then use root explorer to put it under system/app
For some reason I cant get ADB to work anymore? It had at one time. Do we know of any known issues with flashing that we loose the ability to ADB?
Oh well... I am a patient person and it's not like its a deal breaker for me. All is working pretty smoothly 3 weeks into the game.
Swype / ADB ... Progress / NO Progress
Ok, this is VERY interesting...
I still cant get swype to work. I FINALLY got to ADB push the .apk and the Lib and triple checked the build.prop (even used a couple different ones).
All I get is an FC over and over and when I got to settings-applications-manage, to clear cache, it's grayed out. I booted into recovery and cleared dalvik cache, wipe cache, and data. I have even gone as far as to re-flash the ZPAD 1.1, load gApps, Market Hack, Open GL Hack, and restart the whole swype process again with the same result.
HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART and we may want it posted elsewhere: I couldn't get my win7 to load the proper ADB driver (even though it had worked before). I found an app call ADBWireless (widget). It allows me to hit the widget and connect through ADB wirelessly (local wifi) and push/pull ect.
This was amazing and easy to use. Of course you have to have the Tab up so it wouldn't help for anyone who's in a loop.
When you hit the widget it shows the local ip address to connect to:
-I go to the command prompt \androidsdk\tools and type:
adb connect 192.xxx.xxx.xxx:5555
-it connects, and I am able to see the device
I have to use adb remount and then I'm good to go.
Hope this helps someone down the road. I'll keep checking back here but feel free to PM me if you have any questions (or find an update.zip for swype to work).
I made a little progress last night, got rid of the FCs but I can't get the keyboard enabled in the Settings. I managed to track down a Swype version from a Samsung Gaxlaxy Tab, at least that is what I think it is from, and then I had to find the necessary Lib file from somewhere else but when I push the .so to the Lib through ADB and install the Apk it seems like I'm closer, I can open the Swype settings screen and change things but I just can't get the keyboard enabled in the settings and then of course I can't pick the Swype keyboard when configuring the input method.
What changes were you making to the build.prop?

there was a 'header' so to speak that Rothnic posted that mad a few changes to the build.prop to make it look like portions of the Galaxy. He has it at the 'other' fourm.
Checked the permissions on the build.prop and they looked different. I couldn't just 'change' them in root explorer so I re-inserted the lines on the original build.prop, also did a fix permissions in CM (not that it helped).
Permissions in the lib file are hard to tell what they are supposed to be because several of the lib files there have different ones set. Swype.apk permissions look the same as the others. Still getting same FC's over and over. I was able to get into manage apps and hit force stop and clear (quickly tho) but goes back to the same after reboot.
Thanks for trying, as I said before, it's not a biggie. I just enjoy swype as being from palm and blackberry phone's if it weren't for swype I dunno that I would have kept an Android phone.
I can wait, I've spent too many hours jackin with it (although I did learn about the adb wireless and I am comfortable in pushing file that way now)
I managed to get it working although it is a little laggy. I followed rothnic's info in the other thread and after playing around with the build.prop file it is now working. Hopefully as the roms get faster this will get faster. Thanks for the help.

How did you do it? Can you be specific? Which version of Swype are you using? Where did you find it? What other thread?
Working on latest zpad rom. Had to set permissions - I think the important ones were r-x for User on both the lib and apk. And of course the build.prop edits.

I'm pretty sure the swype word is naughty here so I suggest you google for 'rothnic swype' and check the post on the other forum that comes up.
I used adb to push the modified build.prop to the sd card, along with the .so and .apk files. Then I used adb shell to copy the files to the locations rothnic specifies.

Noob needs some help adding some things to Gtab.

Does anyone have yahoo, aim or msn, that would be willing to walk me though

tried to do both on my own, but I seem to be messing up some where, cause
neither end up working.

OK, first things first. What ROM are you running?
Stock TNT--and therefore TNTLite--does not "allow" switching the keyboard. Of course, there are (easy) work arounds.

Stock with performance pack. I have done read the posts and tried to do it, but
I can't get it to work. Same with the frame rate hack. If someone could walk

The part about rooting is important. I didn't have to do that since I had already flashed TNTLite, so I can't give you any insight on z4root. Should be in the market though.

Already rooted.
You'll want to get Root Explorer from the market so you can move the API file from one directory to the other. Then, Jim, who wrote that post invited stock users to private message him about an app to help select the keyboard. I've read a lot of his posts and he really knows his stuff.

yes I installed. was easy except I had to save the .so file as no known program that I could find would open or install it including Snappea which I normally use for my apk files, 7zip, and Free File Viewer. so I mounted my phone, opened it as a viewable drive and copy/pasted it to my app folder on my sd. installed the other file via Snap, change permissions....followed the instructions, basically.
this launcher is sweet. it gives you lots of options, is easy to use, can uninstall apps and I don't know what all else without ever having to open your settings. the only complaint I might have would be that the icons on the folders are very small, a bit hard to see, but not a big deal as I think we all tend to memorize locations and content in our smart or regular type folders.
as far using it to install other roms, I have tried a bit using ROM Toolbox Pro and ROM Manager and no success as they want confirmation for CRM, and as I am sure you already know, there is no recovery currently available that I know of for the Event.
Also, as I viewed the files included in the download for the launcher, it came with and internet shortcut to SuperCharger, and I am gonna try that next, as it is supposed to work with all mods, stock or otherwise. description of this installer/launcher describes ability to use for the install of other mods but I need more information. this is the first android I have rooted and I am not ashamed to admit I am a green noob. I wish somebody would talk down to me and explain a bit better. as I peruse the forums i find a wealth of information but it is hard to put into action with some of the abbreviated instructions so prevalent from topic to topic. if you install and figure a way to mount jellycream, please advise, as i could use all the guidance available. much thanks and have fun. i will kudo this guy and see if he will point me in the right direction.
problem
A problem has emerged when I connect Event and turn on usb debug and mass storage. when the sd card becomes unavailable it turns all user/non-stock icons to little green android men on home page and changes app names to developer names. disconnect and reboot does not return icons or normal app names. tried to use Titanium Pro to restore but that didn't work either. any ideas?
bummer
I have tried everything, disabling stock launcher, and re-installing TouchWiz Home .apk 3 times, but every time I mount my phone as an external drive to load music all my non-stock apps turn to little green android men with mostly unidentifiable names. too bad as this was sweet. I am bummed out. nobody seems to be interested in this thread. would be nice to hear from developer... is there something I am doing wrong? ive checked the install on the .so, permissions... don't understand. please help. thanks. gonna have to uninstall in the mean time ;(

[Q] Multiple questions about the Moto G

hi everybody!
sorry for the non-descriptive title, but i have some questions i'd like to ask here. i just got my moto g 2 days ago, i switched from a samsung galaxy s+ (with cm10.2) so this is quite the change for me, hardware and software wise.
[ANSWERED] 1. first i missed the possibility to swipe my keyboard to type, i found many different apps for that, but my question would be what is the keyboard included in cyanogenmod? because since this can 'see' everything i type i want an app for that i can trust...
[ANSWERED] 2. i really liked the cLock app for time and weather in cm, but google-ing 'clock app' wasnt the most helpful thing i've ever done ^^ so here my queston would be aswel whats the cyanogenmod cLock app and where can i find it?!
[ANSWERED] 3. next thing would be how can i get something like pdroid on this device (i had it on the sgs+)? i would need root i assume, i saw lots of different methods for that aswel. one with like contacting motorola to get the rom unlocked or something like that. so whats the easiest way to get a privacy control on the moto g? i remember something like the new android has some inbuilt setting for that?!?
[ANSWERED] 4. something that is irritating me quite a lot are the software keys, because samsung has the back key on the right side and the moto has it on the left side. also i dont understand why there would be a key for recent apps instead of a menu key. same here: i saw lots of different methods to change that, some even with adding or getting rid of lines of the code. ok i managed to install cm on my sgs, but thats a little out of my capabilities ^^ so again what would be the easiest way to change the buttons around?
[ANSWERED] 5. another thing would be, how do i turn off the vibration when using the keyboard? i tried the setting under 'sound' -> 'vibrate on touch' (or something along those lines) but that didnt turn off all of the vibration, for example its still vibrating when i use the keyboard but not anymore when i open apps or menus.
maybe there is even the possibility to install a stable version of cyanogenmod on the moto g which would solve most of my issues? but since this is running so smoothly i dont want any nightly builds, alphas or betas on this thing right now...
btw i am using the nova launcher in case that makes any difference for any of the questions above!?
also i include this screenshot with all the version numbers in it because it might be useful: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5JftqugO1xsbnh1dTBrQzZVWXc/edit?usp=sharing
thanks a bunch in advance and for reading and i hope someone is willing and able to help me out here!:fingers-crossed:

You can install the stock google keyboard from the play store for using swype, And there is cyangenmod version available for the G, you should go to the Moto G Original Android Development section of the forum for that. The vibration option should be in your sound / keyboard settings so you just need to look better i gues.

3. next thing would be how can i get something like pdroid on this device (i had it on the sgs+)? i would need root i assume, i saw lots of different methods for that aswel. one with like contacting motorola to get the rom unlocked or something like that. so whats the easiest way to get a privacy control on the moto g? i remember something like the new android has some inbuilt setting for that?!?
4. something that is irritating me quite a lot are the software keys, because samsung has the back key on the right side and the moto has it on the left side. also i dont understand why there would be a key for recent apps instead of a menu key. same here: i saw lots of different methods to change that, some even with adding or getting rid of lines of the code. ok i managed to install cm on my sgs, but thats a little out of my capabilities ^^ so again what would be the easiest way to change the buttons around?

I suggest to install Xposed framework (Root needed), and then you can have this features with Gravity Box and Xprivacy (these are modules for Xposed).
In order to root, you have to unlock the bootloader (follow the instruction on Motorola website), then install a Custom recovery (I suggest Philz one) and supersu from Play store

hi and thank you for your contribution! i have unlocked and rooted my device successfully and installed the xposed framework. i havent quite got the hang of how xprivacy works as of now since its a little different from pdroid (and somewhat confusing imo). but thats just a matter of time i guess. i'll start reading here: https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacy#xprivacy or is there a better quick start guide?
i assume i can uninstall the 'xprivacy installer' (the one from google play) after i installed 'xprivacy'? and that gravity box is for the softkeys and its this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554049 ? i'll look into that tomorrow, since its getting late here and i dont wanna mess up now ^^
thanks again!

Mornin', you're very welcome!
Xprivacy it's kind of complicated, but that reading will help you. I admit I don't use it, but I know it gives you full control on privacy and this is what you were looking for As you said, it's just a matter of time!
Btw you can install modules directly from Xposed Installer application, so you can bypass the Play Store.
Yes that's gravity box: it's very good and popular, you can surely reverse/set all the software keys, but also do a lot of modding!
It's more intuitive than Xprivacy, just go ahead options and try them, it's safe!
Good luck and forgive my english!

i am no native english tongue myself, so i dont notice anything wrong with your english. no need to excuse, i make mistakes myself.
i was under the impression that you could do 'stupid' stuff with xprivacy, like i was able to deny my camera app access to the camera with pdroid. that was a good way to test if it was properly working. so i tried and deny firefox access to 'internet' but that didnt seem to work, but then again it especially said its no going to break apps. i dig into all of this further later on.
just a question, what would be a good way to verify it is working like its supposed to? talking about xprivacy here...
edit: and to answer my question no.5: there is another setting for vibration in the keyboard itself, so you have to go through -> language and input -> select settings on your keyboard -> vibrate on key push (or sth along those lines), so basically you have to turn it off twice.

Yeah, of course! I thought you managed this already! Keyboard is like an app itself, and has its own settings (i.e. vibration)
so i tried and deny firefox access to 'internet' but that didnt seem to work

I just tried it and i had no problem to deny the access for Firefox. When you open xprivacy in the app list tap on the Firefox Logo, not on the name or the checkbox. If you do so the details will open. If you now tick the category "Internet" then you will see that it is checked as a square, not as a hook. If it is a square it is only partially blocked. If you go now into the details of the category "Internet", you will see, that not all options are checked. Some are even marked red because they might be essential for the functionalty of the specific app. If you check also these and maybe also all others, then you can prevent Firefox of getting access to the Internet. If you check all items in Internet manually you'll see that category internet has now a hook than a square.
but then again it especially said its no going to break apps.

You can check for example all outgoing connections to the internet from your device. I have not tested this tool, or similar like that, but i will now because i just had the idea Else you can also prevent Facebook app to connect. I use Auto Hide Softkey App. I can for example prevent that it uses the overlay function, so it can not modify the UI and hide the Navbar.
Xprivacy is a very powerful tool. If you want it more simple, you can activate the in Android but Disabled inbuilt AppOPS App (search for AppOPS). But it is also less powerful.
I bought xprivacy. If you buy it, you can download the restrictions automatically and upload yours for others. You are also able to export end import the settings if licensed. Also nice that you can buy it via Paypal because i do not have a Credit Card (and i don't want).
but google-ing 'clock app' wasnt the most helpful thing i've ever done ^^

You should definitely work on your Googling skills
Try "best android clock apps" "List of android clocks" and so on, there are dozens.
maybe there is even the possibility to install a stable version of cyanogenmod on the moto g which would solve most of my issues? but since this is running so smoothly i dont want any nightly builds, alphas or betas on this thing right now...

My friend, you are really funny
Cyanogenmod just got a snapshot Status few days ago. It is one step ahead being a nightly and to steps behind beeing stable
Hope that helps.

Oh and for some settings you do you also have to restart your phone. But actually it will tell you to do so by displaying a toast.

thanks for the explanation! i clicked on the firefox logo but i didnt know you can go even deeper into each section for permissions, that explains it!

well you explained it yourself pretty much, the app was designed to not break apps in the way they work but restrict them from your privat data. so when i clicked firefox'es internet permission and it had the square, i disabled some but not all of it. thats all i was saying

i wasnt on my computer for quiet some time so i couldnt answer on this thread, my apologies.
i bought the pro version of xprivacy with paypal too and i synced my permissions for all apps with the cloud or crowd. it could find and sync most of my apps which is a nice and easy way to get around the ridiculous amount of permissions to set for each app.
can you confirm that most of the synced crowd settings make sense in the way of privacy protection? because i havent looked too much into all those settings but even when i did i couldnt quiet understand them in depth...
also @Landrea thanks for recommending gravity box, that thing is amazing! i was able to restore most of the cyanogenmod settings i was missing, great! also i could reconfigure my softkeys, but i am thinking about this app here to maximize my usable screensize:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys
or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen
or is there a setting for that in gravity box i missed?

You're welcome!
Check navigation bar settings in gravity box, you can change the size of the soft keys and gain space.
Go for that apps if you think you need more usable screensize (hard to believe)
