Dark Keys for 1.5 Firmware - G1 Android Development

Does anyone know how to get dark keys application working on the 1.5 firmware (cupcake)
Is it something the app developer needs to do and if so does anyone know where i can reach him to ask
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513772 go here for app <<

it has to be done on the developers side and if you download the program through market the go to its details and scroll down to email developer.

already sent an E-mail to the Dev asking for the source code. He said he was going to get it uploaded.

cheers
Thanks guys

any luck on getting it to works on 1.5 yet?

Someone needs to make a new version of this app. one that doesnt keep flicking on and off like dark keys does. would be nice if it just remembered whether it was on or off and stayed that way until changed.

whats the darks key?black key?

Would it be possible to have a uer option to have the backlight on or off based on the time of the day?

Hm, they disabled a lot of programs abilities to change settings like wifi/gps etc, dont know if this was one of those settings (REALLY hope not since you cant change it in android settings either).
Really need this app working for 1.5 :/

That's a really good idea but we need to get it working with 1.5 first

Anyone seen any updates on this anywhere? His webpage seems quiet as well. Thinking about looking into this myself, but it'd be a lot easier with his code.

Nobody saw the source? It is explicitely posted on google code..
Here is the link:
http://code.google.com/p/darkkeys/

Did not actually see that, but I dont think it's possible with 1.5 firmware, I looked into it a bit myself, trying to construct hardwareservice jar file for 1.5.
//edit, that is, not possible with the normal hardwareservice way, it'll still work fine on rooted phones.

Rename to darkkeys.apk and install normally. Works only on rooted phones for 1.5 unfortunatly, and it's only debug signed.
Upstream bug tracker here : http://code.google.com/p/darkkeys/issues/list?updated=2&ts=1241446083

This is a disaster for white G1s!
Do I really have to root my phone just to be able to see the keyboard? What are Google playing at?

haha thank you so much i have been waiting for this for a LONG TIME!

Seems they changed detection on whether or not the keypad's open a bit as well, I'll see about making it more reliable sometime today.

Attaching new one, same procedure, rename to .apk and install directly.

What's the point in this?

Bronze G1s suffer from the same problem. So here's another vote for "change timeout based on time of day" feature. Preferably something configurable and togglable. Thanks for your hard work, guys!

abdlockplus for android

So I was reading that adblockplus has been ported to android, but the site I read it on had the source code, but no pre-compiled binary.
I'm without regular access to a computer for the forseeable future and was wondering if anyone might be able to compile the patch into a custom jf 1.31 update (rc30 variety please.)
Anyway, the website where I read about this is here:

Thanks in advance, cheers guys!

I basically implemented the autorotating in a hacky fashion. When I do it "right" (by adding a menu item that gives you the option to turn it on and off), I'll ask JF to include it in his next update.
This is most excellent news. I'm expecting my ADP1 next week and I was dreading having to deal with ads once again (like in the olden days of the internets, before Adblock). Hopefully this port of Adblock will be available to us all soon.
How is one supposed to apply the .patch files? Am I supposed to apply them to the source of the Browser and then recompile?
Would that screw up my themes if I have an icon for the Browser?

You can install Droidsans, mount the file system rw, enabled auto rotate. Make the file system read only again, Reboot.
Uninstall Droidsans and you still have auto rotate with no application installed.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. the droidsans auto rotate tool doesn't work with the browser. The browser is a special case and that's why a modified browser was released that has auto-rotate.
Are you saying that the modified browser with auto-rotate works with the droidsans auto rotate tool?
Meaning if I have the modified browser and use droidsans auto rotate tool to disable autorotate, the modified browser will have autorotate disabled?

as for the browser, download koush's auto rotate browser or steel....both auto rotate....
you dont need droidsans for the browser to autorotate if you have either of the above installed.
Any more news on this? I would dearly love to be able to block ads on my Dream, for several reasons. I do hate ads, but that's not the biggest problem. The problem is the small screen size and limited bandwidth on 3G. Ads are just no good on a phone browser.
There's a .patch file included in the updated blog post (http://www.gotontheinter.net/content/adblock-plus-ported-webkit) but I have no idea what to do with it, how to use it.
I really took Adblock Plus and NoScript for granted on Firefox.. I recently installed the Windows 7 Beta and the first 10 minutes were just unbelievable on the net. With every click I had two other windows popping up. Can't imagine the web without this.
Don't know about web on android. I only use it occasionally, usually Market, Maps or MSN. But it would definately be a more than welcome addition.
Has anyone figured out how to actually "apply the patch" yet?
I tried just installing it as normal but it failed.
Maybe the file has to be copied somewhere?

It's a git diff. Use git-apply to apply webkit-adblockplus.patch to your local copy of Android source and compile it.

Unfortunatly, some of us are on Windows and even if we have the source and apply the patches, we can't build it.
If anyone here is on OS X or Linux and can build the ssource and upload the .APK of it, I'd really appreciate it.

Ok, so I'm on my main Xubuntu desktop (I was on a business trip with my MSI Wind running XP last post) but I had some problems with my computer so (after backing up /home) I reinstalled...
So what do I need to get from Synaptic to compile this thing? I have a copy of the Android source, but I probably need to reinstall everything that was on http://source.android.com/download#TOC-Ubuntu-Linux-i386- right?
Thanks for your help,

P.S: I still think it'd be useful if someone could post a compiled build of the browser with AdBlock Plus... If I can get it working, I'll post mine.

I'm really noobish with Linux, but I'd like to learn how to do all this stuff since I want to start Android development...

Hi, I am the one who made this (the link in the first post just copied from my blog, http://vogue-android.blogspot.com). The patch is against cupcake's webkit, since that is what we are running on the HTC vogue. I suspect it won't apply against the pre-cupcake source, and binaries certainly won't work. Note it's not a change to the browser.apk, but rather the libwebcore.so. If you're already running cupcake on the g1 the patch should apply cleanly to the current HEAD in git. Otherwise, you'll need to wait for cupcake on the g1.

Sorry for the late reply but yes its a 32b Rom and as far as wifi i havent tried it out yet if it doesnt work plz let me know.
does the music app work ? in other releases it would force close. if it works ill flash and give it a try
well, i tried it and the keyboard FC. also the lock screen jumps between lock and main screen. it wouldnt let me make phone call or text. i will wait for further updates. just fyi to everyone else.
Will I be able to flash this on my phone and then some 32a kernel patch??
Or will that cause a brick?
Same here locks up keyboard on setup... nice looking rom tho
Just a thought here... and if not I understand. But could you make a version that simply has everything installed to /system which will make the rom incredibly fast even without swap. That way we would only need fat32 and linux swap partitions. I understand that it would mean no apps2sd but that really isn't necessary... If you're unsure check out Evil D's nano Sense v 1.1 to see just how fast fast can get. http://bit.ly/1GOfDS

That is a great idea and I will look into that I'm trying to fix the keyboard issue as we speak and most likely it will be fixed on the next release I am running it on my phone as well to catch most bugs the music player is very buggy I will work on that too and the autorotate as well
Dialer closes upon any number being pressed. Making it unusable.
Google contacts are not there... even after managing to get signed in at the setup.
pressing "del" in messager backs you back to the thread messaging screen.
Lock screen flicks.... does pretty much anything with keyboard.
Google contacts aren't there by default with pulse roms... you need to go to settings and turn sync on for contacts. It's off by default for some dumb reason.

It took a little time to get everything set up. It would have been up sooner, but I was out of town for work this week and stuck at a hotel with the slowest download/upload speeds in America (seriously downloading ROMs in number of bytes per second).
Glad to be back home and able to get everything else set up and posted. I hope people enjoy.

It worked just fine for me (I just double checked, using the CM6 ROM for base to be sure). It does take a little while after you click the 'Serve Me!' button for it to come up. Then it takes you to another page, and says 'Preparing your rom..' for a bit, then the download link will pop up.
When the link comes up, it will still say 'Preparing,' even though it is done. The link comes up on the left side the add box below, so it is easy to miss. It will say 'Your rom is ready for download' and provide a link.
cool idea OP...just wondering about the Cyanogen build. Is it based on the nightly?

Did you upload your own app? If so you HAVE to upload your own app in zip file.
WOW cool idea worked fine flashed fine using damage base. I love it. One thing does it deox?
How about all the basics like zipalign etc? Are those all default to whatever you use as a base?
Some of the base roms you have listed have different versions. As an example is OMJ...he has 3 versions (w/kernel, w/o kernel and deodexed). How can we tell which one is part of the program?
If I can make a suggestion, in so many people here like to theme, if a choice is to be made you use the deodexed versions.

To my knowledge the kitchen does none of those things. I know dsixda's kitchen is a bit more in-depth, including those features, but this is a lot more basic. Assume all ROMs default to whatever the original developer has done (so, for example, Fresh Evo does zipalign on load, but the stock ROM does not).

The CM base that is provided is the release candidate. Check the link in the OP for the post. I cannot keep up with the CM nightlies, so the kitchen will likely only be updated with major releases (if there is a RC2, or when the final comes out). Sorry for the inconvenience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746276
So if the base rom that I select already was deox... zipaligned etc etc then I'm safe to assume thats how it gets recooked?
It would be cool if you can take some apps from another ROM and place it into your base ROM..
Very cool implementation of the kitchen. Nice work! One of my favorite features is making stock apps uninstallable by moving them to /data/app. Save you the headache of using adb or something like root explorer to manually delete an apk for something you don't want.
Is there any way that explanations of the files could be posted that are shown. The applications may or may not also make sense as they sometimes use internal HTC names. Yes, I know, asking a lot, but it might help those of us who don't know what all the files listed in the first section are for.
Is there any way to change boot animation? I saw on the Nexus One kitchen it was possible...
Skype Beta?
i saw in the kitchen one of your selectable apps is skype for video calls is there a apk for that anywhere
Little OT but where can i just get the Skype apk you have in your kitchen?
Thanks
everything looks great!
only idea and question which comes to mind as im stepping through the menus and options - version numbers for the applications to be added in?
example, wifi tether - what version number is this?
Would it make sense to have an option to include Netarchy's kernel for the ROMs that didn't already have it?

Nextbook Next7s Hacking

E-Fun's latest Android tablet is now on the shelf at BigLots. It's a $99 budget device running 4.0 ICS.
I tried to install Android Market (the easy way) and the app crashes. I take that means this tablet will require a little more work. Has anyone hacked it yet?
I am also interested in knowing how to get Gapps to work on this as well...just purchased mine on the 27th at Big Lots too for the $89.99 special, been trying all apk's with no luck..keeps on crashing when clicking it.
When I sent a note to E Fun asking if there were any plans to update and add Google support, the response was:
This is not an issue we can change. Like the majority of tablets on the market Google will not grant a licenses to use their app market. The tablets are designed to work with third party Android apps sites where you can still download Android apps, the only difference is it's from a different website.
Of course I sent them a list of bunches of budget tablets that come with access...
I don't have the technical savvy to create the necessary mods -- but if anybody out there is interested, and there's anything I can do to assist, please let me know! With access to the google apps, this would be one sweet little tablet for the price!
I found this but it is for the next7 ...shouldn't be much different, or so I'd think...I will give it a try I suppose.

I'm pretty sure that was written for Gingerbread, not ICS. The last couple of posts kind of imply that it didn't work on the Next7S.
Your right...besides not finding the USB drives anywhere (as I cannot get the sdk's to work on it) I tried to uploading the files then install and cannot get some of the apks to install, like the GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk & GoogleServicesFramework.apk all others installed fine. With no luck on keeping the market from crashing boo! I am sure someone will be able to come up with something in due time, I hope.
Look at freaktab.com - Finless Bob has cooked a rooted rom with Google app,Super user and /system mounted r/w.
The download includes all neccessary instructions, files and utility - including driver - for Next7s. There is one clarification that I think will help... To get into the download / flash mode you need to hold down on volume rocker so that BOTH (volume up | down)switches are activated.

In case anybody else is having a hard time it's here: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread....Cream-Sandwich-Finless-ROM-1-2-Root-and-Gplay
Thanks for the link. I just picked up a 7s for my kid yesterday after the Next5 we got him originally quit working. I DLed the Play store APK and was like OMG-WTH every time it kicked us out. The Next5 came rooted (out of a sealed box) and had no issues with Google Play from a standard APK. If you guys have this working on the Next7s (YF031 serial) then I'll flash it.
One thing I find hysterical is on the box it states it is a Capacitive Screen, but my kid used his generic plastic stylus (intended for an older Nintendo DS) and it worked! I even tried a pencil eraser and it worked too. Does that make this a hybrid Capacitive/Resistive screen then?
****Update, I got clarification in the other thread on the two different versions of the rom. All is well, the tablet is now rooted, and is running Google Play on the Finless Rom. Very happy with how quick it was to do as well. Thanks again for the link!
Please help!

sorry for the non-descriptive title, but i have some questions i'd like to ask here. i just got my moto g 2 days ago, i switched from a samsung galaxy s+ (with cm10.2) so this is quite the change for me, hardware and software wise.
[ANSWERED] 1. first i missed the possibility to swipe my keyboard to type, i found many different apps for that, but my question would be what is the keyboard included in cyanogenmod? because since this can 'see' everything i type i want an app for that i can trust...
[ANSWERED] 2. i really liked the cLock app for time and weather in cm, but google-ing 'clock app' wasnt the most helpful thing i've ever done ^^ so here my queston would be aswel whats the cyanogenmod cLock app and where can i find it?!
[ANSWERED] 3. next thing would be how can i get something like pdroid on this device (i had it on the sgs+)? i would need root i assume, i saw lots of different methods for that aswel. one with like contacting motorola to get the rom unlocked or something like that. so whats the easiest way to get a privacy control on the moto g? i remember something like the new android has some inbuilt setting for that?!?
[ANSWERED] 4. something that is irritating me quite a lot are the software keys, because samsung has the back key on the right side and the moto has it on the left side. also i dont understand why there would be a key for recent apps instead of a menu key. same here: i saw lots of different methods to change that, some even with adding or getting rid of lines of the code. ok i managed to install cm on my sgs, but thats a little out of my capabilities ^^ so again what would be the easiest way to change the buttons around?
[ANSWERED] 5. another thing would be, how do i turn off the vibration when using the keyboard? i tried the setting under 'sound' -> 'vibrate on touch' (or something along those lines) but that didnt turn off all of the vibration, for example its still vibrating when i use the keyboard but not anymore when i open apps or menus.
maybe there is even the possibility to install a stable version of cyanogenmod on the moto g which would solve most of my issues? but since this is running so smoothly i dont want any nightly builds, alphas or betas on this thing right now...
btw i am using the nova launcher in case that makes any difference for any of the questions above!?
also i include this screenshot with all the version numbers in it because it might be useful: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5JftqugO1xsbnh1dTBrQzZVWXc/edit?usp=sharing
thanks a bunch in advance and for reading and i hope someone is willing and able to help me out here!:fingers-crossed:
EDIT:
all the questions above have been answered! only one more question is open atm, [ here ] thanks to everyone who contributed so far!

You can install the stock google keyboard from the play store for using swype, And there is cyangenmod version available for the G, you should go to the Moto G Original Android Development section of the forum for that. The vibration option should be in your sound / keyboard settings so you just need to look better i gues.

thanks again, sadly the play store says: 'This app is incompatible with all of your devices.' and it seems this is because of some kind of regional restrictions for this app and/or my country. i cant imagine what and why that would be but i cant download it from there, is there any other way to get this? like an .apk or something?

yea, thats what i was thinking after i posted my answer, sometimes my brain is in stupid mode *derp...
i found it here and i include the link for people with the same problem, the link is in german though:
http://www.androidnext.de/apps/google-keyboard-kitkat-tastatur-fuer-alle-geraete-apk-download/
and that works pretty good, thanks for the recommendation!
edit: i think i found the cLock app i was talking about, or a very similar one from the same developer it seems:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dvtonder.chronus
its a very nice clock and weather app, i can even do more (like calendar). thats 2 down 3 to go!

I suggest to install Xposed framework (Root needed), and then you can have this features with Gravity Box and Xprivacy (these are modules for Xposed).
In order to root, you have to unlock the bootloader (follow the instruction on Motorola website), then install a Custom recovery (I suggest Philz one) and supersu from Play store

hi and thank you for your contribution! i have unlocked and rooted my device successfully and installed the xposed framework. i havent quite got the hang of how xprivacy works as of now since its a little different from pdroid (and somewhat confusing imo). but thats just a matter of time i guess. i'll start reading here: https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacy#xprivacy or is there a better quick start guide?
i assume i can uninstall the 'xprivacy installer' (the one from google play) after i installed 'xprivacy'? and that gravity box is for the softkeys and its this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554049 ? i'll look into that tomorrow, since its getting late here and i dont wanna mess up now ^^
thanks again!

Mornin', you're very welcome!
Xprivacy it's kind of complicated, but that reading will help you. I admit I don't use it, but I know it gives you full control on privacy and this is what you were looking for As you said, it's just a matter of time!
Btw you can install modules directly from Xposed Installer application, so you can bypass the Play Store.
Yes that's gravity box: it's very good and popular, you can surely reverse/set all the software keys, but also do a lot of modding!
It's more intuitive than Xprivacy, just go ahead options and try them, it's safe!
Good luck and forgive my english!

i am no native english tongue myself, so i dont notice anything wrong with your english. no need to excuse, i make mistakes myself.
i was under the impression that you could do 'stupid' stuff with xprivacy, like i was able to deny my camera app access to the camera with pdroid. that was a good way to test if it was properly working. so i tried and deny firefox access to 'internet' but that didnt seem to work, but then again it especially said its no going to break apps. i dig into all of this further later on.
just a question, what would be a good way to verify it is working like its supposed to? talking about xprivacy here...
edit: and to answer my question no.5: there is another setting for vibration in the keyboard itself, so you have to go through -> language and input -> select settings on your keyboard -> vibrate on key push (or sth along those lines), so basically you have to turn it off twice.

Yeah, of course! I thought you managed this already! Keyboard is like an app itself, and has its own settings (i.e. vibration)
so i tried and deny firefox access to 'internet' but that didnt seem to work

I just tried it and i had no problem to deny the access for Firefox. When you open xprivacy in the app list tap on the Firefox Logo, not on the name or the checkbox. If you do so the details will open. If you now tick the category "Internet" then you will see that it is checked as a square, not as a hook. If it is a square it is only partially blocked. If you go now into the details of the category "Internet", you will see, that not all options are checked. Some are even marked red because they might be essential for the functionalty of the specific app. If you check also these and maybe also all others, then you can prevent Firefox of getting access to the Internet. If you check all items in Internet manually you'll see that category internet has now a hook than a square.
but then again it especially said its no going to break apps.

You can check for example all outgoing connections to the internet from your device. I have not tested this tool, or similar like that, but i will now because i just had the idea Else you can also prevent Facebook app to connect. I use Auto Hide Softkey App. I can for example prevent that it uses the overlay function, so it can not modify the UI and hide the Navbar.
Xprivacy is a very powerful tool. If you want it more simple, you can activate the in Android but Disabled inbuilt AppOPS App (search for AppOPS). But it is also less powerful.
I bought xprivacy. If you buy it, you can download the restrictions automatically and upload yours for others. You are also able to export end import the settings if licensed. Also nice that you can buy it via Paypal because i do not have a Credit Card (and i don't want).
but google-ing 'clock app' wasnt the most helpful thing i've ever done ^^

You should definitely work on your Googling skills
Try "best android clock apps" "List of android clocks" and so on, there are dozens.

My friend, you are really funny
Cyanogenmod just got a snapshot Status few days ago. It is one step ahead being a nightly and to steps behind beeing stable
Hope that helps.

Oh and for some settings you do you also have to restart your phone. But actually it will tell you to do so by displaying a toast.

thanks for the explanation! i clicked on the firefox logo but i didnt know you can go even deeper into each section for permissions, that explains it!

well you explained it yourself pretty much, the app was designed to not break apps in the way they work but restrict them from your privat data. so when i clicked firefox'es internet permission and it had the square, i disabled some but not all of it. thats all i was saying

i wasnt on my computer for quiet some time so i couldnt answer on this thread, my apologies.
i bought the pro version of xprivacy with paypal too and i synced my permissions for all apps with the cloud or crowd. it could find and sync most of my apps which is a nice and easy way to get around the ridiculous amount of permissions to set for each app.
can you confirm that most of the synced crowd settings make sense in the way of privacy protection? because i havent looked too much into all those settings but even when i did i couldnt quiet understand them in depth...
also @Landrea thanks for recommending gravity box, that thing is amazing! i was able to restore most of the cyanogenmod settings i was missing, great! also i could reconfigure my softkeys, but i am thinking about this app here to maximize my usable screensize:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys
or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.tsorn.FullScreen
or is there a setting for that in gravity box i missed?

You're welcome!
Check navigation bar settings in gravity box, you can change the size of the soft keys and gain space.
Go for that apps if you think you need more usable screensize (hard to believe)
