to flash 5.1.1 or not.... - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, so my question is for those that already flashed 5.1.1 stock, does it worth it? is there bugs? is it smoother? THANKS

I tried today, but I didn't read all the articles very carefully after being away from ROM world for so long.
You can risk tripping the Knox counter if you don't follow the lovely guides out there - so do your reading. In my opinion, moving to 5.1.1 hasn't been worth tripping that damn counter. Don't flash a custom kernel through recovery; use Odin to load the stock ROM. Hell, don't listen to me - read those guides - because after today I'm kicking myself!

if i am flashing stock then it's through odin....not custom rom so it shouldn't trip the knox...

For some peace of mind and if you don't have flashing experience I don't recommend flashing the 5.1.1 via odin. Bricking your device, tripping Knox and voiding your warranty may be the result. Its safer to wait for the OTA update. A lot of threads here are started due to 5.1.1 flashing problems.

I have several devices all running different versions of lollipop.
Can't say its worth it, but Google did fix a lot of the bugs in the core android. Unfortunately I think TW doesn't help.
If you are having any major issues, I would suggest you search to see if its been addressed in 5.1.1, otherwise hold off for the next update.

Here you go and flash.

is there any way how to get official 4.1 OTA in region, where OTA is still unavailable? Somehow change region of my note and then check for OTA? Is this possible? If yes, how?

I know it sounds crazy and I am anxious as everyone else but my experience having had several android devices is that it is often better to just wait.
I have know special knowledge about the release date but the way the JB update is rolling out for the S3 and the N10.1 we should have it in most if not all regions by the end of the year which is only 4 weeks away.
Personally I am quite happy with the way the tablet currently opperates, sure I am excited about the new premium suite and google now but the tablet is currently doing everything I need it to do so persoanlly I would counsel waiting until the official release.
Nah, bugger that....
I
"Hmm, but this means wipe of my device right?"
f you are rooted and use mobile ODIN you can update without loosing everything, just make sure cache/data wipe and dalvik are unticked before flashing. You may loose root and go back to stock recovery but flash CWM again and all is well with the world.... Just remember to run triangle away again to reset that pesky flash counter...
"How about flashing if you have an nt8010 would it cause problems???"
Not too sure about the 8010/8013 as there is the modem part of the software but apparently there has been a fix to disable this. Most people who own one of these units have posted it works well but I'm not gonna guarantee anything as I personally don't own one...

I personally flasehd the JB 4.1.1 German ROM on an ICS 4.0.4 Italian ROM (not rooted) through Odin, and everything worked like a charm, no wipe, all settings remained unchanged, all apps (even disabled ones remained disabled)

My bad typo 'know' should be 'no' I do not have any special knowledge about the release but I am guessing before the new year based on the
s3 JB release schedule and the incremental roll out of the N10.1 JB

I think it might be a good idea to have a thread for any questions as the its gonna get quite cluttered. Some questions might not need a thread. Anyway I have a question

Is the home button made of glass and aluminium like the rest of the device?
Does Viral (see my sig) work without any problems? And what resolution can you select?
Would an S6 bought from Saudi Arabia work in the UK incl 4G?
Does light flow work with the S6?
Hey, has anyone here an issue where the video quality gets really poor when in low light?
My videos all tent to look "milky" when the lights are off and the resolutions are higher than 720p.
Anyone here had a similar problem?

I have an s6 with carrier bloat, can I flash a unbranded firmware over it? Does it have a counter when flashing roms?

The only counter the S6 has right now is the Knox warranty counter. As long as you flash stock roms -not modified in any way- Knox shouldn't be tripped and you wouldn't loose the warranty and access to Samsung pay. If you modify the device with, for instance, PingPong Root, the status will be shown as 'Modified' and you will lose Samsung Pay and OTA updates untill you flash a stock rom again.
You can flash unbranded firmware without issues as long as its compatible. That was literally the first thing I did to my phone.

You can. You'd just lose your warranty and access to samsung pay. If you're interested in removing the carrier's bloatware, you can use the Debloater tool. Pretty straightforward, effective and safe. It can even 'disable' system apps so you should be careful with that.

If you flash a stock ROM over an already debloated one, the disabled apps won't become enabled. You'd need to perform a factory reset for them to become available again. This means you can flash newer versions of stock ROMs as they become available without fear of having to debloat again. This is nice if you want to try newer kernel versions included in the latest ROMs, or to try different basebands.
-As a sidenote, when I say flash the stock ROMs I refer to flashing with Odin, rather than custom recoveries (because installing custom recoveries voids the knox counter)

My bro just told me you can flash zips with flashfire without tripping Knox, so this can be used to install twrp? And how do you know if you tripped Knox?

Knox will be tripped if you install a custom recovery or kernel - that's for sure, whether you use flashfire or odin or anything else.
Post 784 and 785 of this thread kinda reassure it, among others.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60861926&postcount=784
Check if knox is tripped by going into download mode (hold power button + home button + volumen down untill a cyan screen shows up, then volume up).
Is there any way to get nexus like navigation buttons on the s6? Also is there an app that can add long press function to the recent button?
Why does my Knox flag say 0x0304 and not 0x1 like everything else I've seen? I flashed TWRP for root/debloat and flashed back stock recovery for deep sleep. I don't care about warranty, I'm just curious if there's a difference. Model 920F.
Sensors not working
I installed Noble Nougat Experience 4.5 S8 port on my SM-G920F. Battery life was bad so I decided to go back to stock ROM.
I did something dumb. I deleted all partitions and Windows could not recognise my device.
I solved the problem with Smart Switch.
I installed stock ROM and everything was fine until I started Asphalt 8 game. I tilted my phone to control the car but car just went foward.
I thought it was the game issue but when I opened YouTube I couldn't go in landscape mode.
I tried to calibrate gyroscope sensor but it still didn't work.
I entered *#0*# in phone app and went to sensors and none of the worked and SensorHub Test failed.
If someone knows is it software or hardware problem.
Please help!!!

So far as I know, flashing stock samsung firmware will NOT trip Knox
If it trips Knox, then it will be up to the repair centre the phone goes to and the carrier, regardless of EU, UK or any other LAW as Knox trip does invalidate warranty. Just because you are lucky enough to get a phone fixed after it's had custom software on does not make it the norm. And if you're refused warranty, good luck challenging it, Europe or not.
As for going back to 5.1.1 I heard it wasn't possible without breaking Knox.

Have you had any luck? I want to as well because my battery is draining like 40% faster now that I upgraded. That and there's a few bugs that I can't get rid of that bother me quite a bit.
I've tried the various guides online using Odin3 and the ROMs from SamMobile but I can't get it to not fail. I've factory restored it multiple times and tried all of the updates to Odin 3.10. I can't get any of it to work and It's making me mad! I've tried two different PCs, made sure the drivers for reading the phones are updated and even multiple USB cords! I just want Lolipop back so I can enjoy my phone and not have it be dead halfway through my day!

Hi,
Flashing ROM from sammobile never worked for me. This is what I did.
Download the latest 5.1.1 bootloader, modem and TWRP 3.0 for your model. Flash them in odin after putting them in respective locations. If successful, the phone boots into recovery, where you can restore a 5.1.1 backup if you have any. If you don't have a backup, see that you have a ROM file ready in the phone to flash.

Somebody knows which??
Downgrade not work for me, bootlop, no recovery mode for wipe after flash, only download mode. Knox not trip.

Security Updates

Hi all.
I am on debloated stock (European/Nordic) with root and custom kernel. So I do not get any updates.
Question:
Does anyone know where I can find security patches/udates to SM-920F?
Or do I need to flash stock back, update it and then do all the stuff again which makes this TW-stock rom slightly better?
I have tried to search all threads on this S6 site but could not found any info.
Thank You.

Samsung Health not working after OREO update

Hi Guys,
Yesterday I updated my phone via Odin to Oreo, but unfortunately samsung health says that my phone is rooted and it is not working anymore. ( Of course my phone is not rooted, I used stock firmware)
I think the problem is I used different region code firmware. Am I right? How can I use the app again? Wait for my original country's firmware and update via Odin would be a solution?

It detects Knox is 0x1. To fix this you must root your phone, go with root browser to the root of the device (/) then /efs. There you'll find a file "factory.prop". Open it and add there "ro.config.tima=0". Then you can unroot/reflash stock ROM and s health works

Experts recommend root if your KNOX is 0x1 because that is the only solution, if you fail to read up on how to flash firmware and end up with a problem because of your own fault, and fail to mention in your main post that you didn't flash the firmware correctly, we are not psychic, we can only go on the info you give us
Next time, learn how to flash firmware the correct way first

Yep, with my S5 that was the method, but instructions for S7 are under the download on sammobile's site and all over this forum
As a rule when I get a new phone I spend a good few weeks reading threads before I attempt anything, even a simple stock flash, saves possible bricks and other problems like this one
Anyway good it's working again
