I was wondering if anyone else has managed to get a linux distro to run properly on Verizon's model of the S6. It seems to be failing when it attempts to mount the partitions. I had heard it was because Verizon's kernel has a bunch of write-protected partitions. I browsed around for some other kernels but haven't seen one that matches my model. Since I'm no wiz at this, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
Without an unlocked bootloader, this seems highly improbable.

Hi
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S through Optus here in Australia. Like many others, the phone is running frustratingly slow. After reading many articles on this, I have decided to root the phone, then run the one click lag fix. Rooting will also allow me to use Titanium Backup which I am keen to do.
I am very new to all this phone stuff and so far, every rooting method I have tried has failed to work (2 methods involving downloading an update.zip, one automatic method through a PC). I think this may be because my Australian phone is slightly different to the galaxy's that the root guides were created for.
My phone specs are:
Build number: Froyo.DTJP5
Baseband version: I9000DTJP3
Firmware version: 2.2
I'd greatly appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction for applying root to this phone. Or if anyone thinks there is a better option for speeding the phone up, please let me know.
you can either apply a one click lag fix (available in the market) or follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
I just got my galaxy s5 with boost mobile. I previously rooted my s3 with boost mobile so I know to root with the files based on the sprint version. However i dont know what to do because my device came pre installed with android 5.0. I seen one method but it was made for a specific build number and people bricked their device trying to root without that build number. Also im not to privy of using the fastboot method and adb. So can anyone point me in a direction to help me get rooted.
So, as some here probably know, there was a huge linux kernel vulnerability that was discovered recently, that i *believe* gives every android device root access, called the Dirty COW exploit. I am just wondering if anyone has actually tried applying this to the G5, as imagine it should work with no issues. If not, maybe i will have to look into it a little deeper to see if i can get it working this weekend.
It does work on the VZW G5, but the issue we all need to consider before applying it is how to undo it. Root access alone isn't all that significant if we can't flash an original image (which requires an unlocked bootloader, unless I'm mistaken).
If you modify /system, OTAs won't apply, meaning you're stuck on whatever version you decided to root. This could be pretty terrible, especially for most of us XDA users, who enjoy being on the cutting edge!

I don't think an unlocked bootloader is necessary. The G2 and G3 were never unlocked, but all the roms were bumped.
I wonder if the 15A update from today will patch this loophole?
:crying:I would think some type of memory management or memory encryption patch to greatly reduce the chances of successful bit flips!! Verizon kinda sketchy on details, pushed this out rather quick, sure signs of "hmm, maybe I'll wait on this update!!":good:
Is it works on VZW LG G5 ? I need root access, temporary is ok.
I don't feel like messing up my phone until we have a guarantee root and recovery like the g2
Edit heres a video someone made using this to root an HTC since it's kernel based I'm guessing that it should work

I have installed debian on my laptop to try running this method hopefully soon I just hope the laptop I'm using can install the Android sdk or ndk plus my laptop is a 32 bit operating system so we'll see

Hey Yall, Ive spent roughly the last 3 weeks or so reading threads on root/roms for Samsung Galaxy devices. So many that I cant remember all the models I read them for. I successfully rooted an S7 that I bought to replace my broken cricket phone just to find out it was incompatible with cricket .. Anyway I purchased a Galaxy SM-A015AZ
eMMC Check: Model- Samsung a01qtu
eMMC Chip: Type- QE63MB
One UI Core: 2.0
Android: 10
Build: QP1A.190711.020.A015AZUCS2ATJ1
Service Provider Software Version: SAOMC_SM-A015AZ_AIO_AIO_QQ_0019
security Patch: 10/1/2020
Kernel: 4.9.186-18934666
OEM Unlock tab is not visible but on adb command results "1" (i believe thats unlocked)
qualcomm lock still active
FRP still enabled
I dont care about Knox
Was wondering if anyone can help me with instructions to gain root on this phone, and the possibility of a privacy based rom (no google/samsung intrusions)
Im not really familiar with lineage or its features, so I dont know if it would accomplish that. Or maybe a linux based Rom (That would be cool)
Anyway please if anyone can point me to threads or forums that can help me (my searches have led nowhere) Or help me out getting something going for this phone I would much appreciate

Thanks, Cricket sucks in the fact that they wouldnt even let me check the firmware and build number on the phone until it was purchased..
Does Anybody know of a reasonably priced phone I could look for that can be fully Rooted/Rom without all the google/samsung (big brother watching BS) ?? Was looking at the librem phones from purism, but they are way outta my price range..
OR-- would it be a possibility to still do something with either my S7 or the A01 through a different carrier??

The answer is that the bootloader is fused electronically, you can only flash an equal or higher version bootloader/firmware.
It's a hardware protection implemented by most phone manufacturers, and there's no known way around it.
If there was, we would have root on all bootloader versions by simply downgrading it, but no can do.
Don't lose too much sleep over it, lots of very smart guys have tried already to no avail.
The only way, is by unlocking the bootloader which is protected with a 256bit AES key, so good luck.
VoLTE won't work on the "U" unlocked firmware even if it's flashed with Cricket/ATT firmware, unless it has an original ATT IMEI (yeah ATT blows!). There's no way around it, it's controlled by the network.

sorry for the repeats on info.. still tryin to figure out how this site is layed out. wanted to add a response from another forum here because it may help someone else
Please do move this to the correct thread, as I am new here.
So, as I stated in the title, I need help rooting this phone. I am familiar with rooting, flashing and all of that. But there is a huge problem with this phone, as I am unable to find the stock rom of it anywhere on the internet. There are no guides, either. It's like this phone doesn't even exist.
Another thing is, that this phone was modified in my country to be called "A1 Alpha 20", it's the basic version, not the Plus one. I'm pretty sure there are guides for the Plus one... But the name/model is Alcatel 3L (2020) 5029Y. The phones are the same, I'm pretty sure the Alcatel 3L rom would work fine on it, too. They have the same specs as well.
It's a pretty solid phone, with good specs, not sure why nobody is talking about it. Even my older phone, Samsung J5, has a ton of guides, and of course, I installed TWRP on it and rooted it a year ago. It's working good, even to this day.
So, I'm asking for your help here, I need tips on how to root this phone. I want to know if it's possible pulling the stock firmware out of it, or just rooting it without TWRP? I can't find TWRP for it either, I'm afraid there is nothing I will be able to do for now. I have access to ADB tools and a PC, if I can maybe do something with these. I enabled OEM unlocking without having to format which means that my bootloader was unlocked? If so, could that make pulling stock images easier???
Please help me out. Thank you. For any additional information (model, build number, all info that I can pull out using applications and such) just let me know and I will tell you.
To add root functionality to Android all you have to do is to replace existing ( restricted ) Toybox binary by an unrestricted version, like Toybox 0.8.5.
