can't enter fastboot mode, can't unlock bootloader - Sony Xperia M2

Hi guys,
I got this phone last night, brand new and have been trying all my waking hours to get it rooted but I can't even get to fastboot mode to unlock the bootloader. I'm trying the procedure on Song's website, but when I try to get to fast boot (Turn off phone, hold volume up while inserting The usb cable) but it doesn't work. I have googled getting to fastboot mode. I've tried tapping volume up, as well tapping volume down, while starting up. Nothing works.
It has never taken me this long to root a phone and I could really use some help!

Some additional info if you need it. I'm running windows 7 64 bit and have build 18.3.1.c.1.13 on my phone

First check if you can unlock your bootloader (*#*#7378423# *#*) it's typing "service ", go in service info - > configuration, if "Rooting Status says: Yes" you can unlock it.
Good Luck.

Next to boot loader unlocked it says yes. But I still can't get to fastboot!

If you only want root access, why unlock the bootloader. Have you powered off the phone then hold vol up and connect the USB cable then same again with vol down

Well first things first I do eventually want to put a custom rom on it, but for now just want to unlock and root it.
So are you saying I should power of the m2, then hold volume up while plugging in the usb, and as soon as I plug in the cable, hold volume down?

No.
He is saying connect your phone with volume up, wait until the drivers are instaled, then repeat with volume down.
Good Luck.

The problem is, that the drivers don't install. All I get when I turn off, press and hold volume up, then plug in the usb is that the Sony logo displays for a few second, then a battery is displayed, and finally the screen goes dark

Ok, so good news and bad news. Good news is I finally got the bootloader unlocked (it worked with my OPO cable, but not the sony one that came with the phone) and through fastboot installed this kernel and cwm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...2303-cwm-based-recovery-6-0-4-6-root-t2884503.
I'm trying to get into CWM so I can flash superuser by tapping volume down with the sony logo comes up and the phone vibrates, but all it does it boot as normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

so I tried to follow this http://www.droidviews.com/install-cwm-root-xperia-m2/ in order to finally get to recovery. now my the screen is flashing on and off. I really am not liking this phone so far.
Does any one have any suggestions. I just wanna get this rooted so I can install my backed up apps with ROM Toolkit.

The easiest way to root the m2 if you aren't a expert and know how to flash a ftf via flashtool is flash jb root with towelroot then update over the air to 4.4.2 then 4.4.4 then install supersu n update binaries or just flash the jb kernel root with Xperia rootkit then flush back kk kernel

hey, I finally got it after almost 48 hours. I've never had to put so much time or effort into rooting an android device again, and, as a result, will definitely think twice before purchasing another Sony android device. I eventually got it rooted and everything using a tool called emma and some help from people in another thread.
Aidy: where did you find 18.3.1.c.1.15? I'd like to install it so my phone stops telling me there is an update, which I can't install vai emma.

Flashtool, I got to 18.3.1.C.1.13 updating ota then flashed 18.3.1.C.1.15 as a pre-rooted zip as I could only use a computer to do the update but if you have a recovery spcc doesn't work. Well on my phone anyways

I believe that you have to have an unlocked bootloader and root to boot into recovery mode. Follow this guide from the Sony website to see if tyou can unlock your bootloader; http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
No need for unlock bootloader. Root is enough. There will be 4 files to put into root. To get cwm menu, turn off the phone, plug the phone charger, when you see the sony logo, click the volume down key as much as possible.

Thank you for correcting me, I haven't installed a recovery in a while. I first installed mine when I was unlocking my bootloader, hence the presumed need for an unlocked bootloader. It's always nice to be corrected as it enhances my knowledge that little bit more.
1. Install cwm from cmd again.
2. If successful, turn off ur device.
3. Connect the charger and Turn it on.when u see sony logo start pressing vol- repeatedly.
4. U will be in cwm.
Sent from my ST23i
which firmware version do you have? i heard firmware .16 require connect to usb to go to CWM
thank you all for your replies.
the bootloader is unlocked. i have the newest firmware(4.25). this could be the issue?
i tried to press a vol down button, but nothing happens.
i reinstalled the firmware with the sony update centre and rooted the phone.
the cmd method isn't working now, it say 'waiting for device' and stays like that.
i wanted to install jelly bean, and i wanted to use rom manager.
is there any other way to install it?
Waiting for device? Seems like youre in wrong mode, either it wants adb, flash, or fastboot. You got root, right? Use manual method - copy those cwm files using root capable file manager.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i
if its saying waiting for device, then drivers are not installed properly bro! first install them!
works
got it to work, god knows how.
thanks to everybody for the help.

Probably bad kernel. You should be able to bring it back by flashing the kernel from stock 4.4.4 FTF only
How shall I flash it?
Tried to unbrick with holding power + volume up for 10 secs (3 beeps) but still nothing.
There is OFF hole by the sim card, press with something sharp will power off the device. Flash proper kernel and you should be good.
Good Luck.

Try below step's,
1. Turn off your Xperia Z3 and wait 5-7 seconds after screen turns off.
2. Power on your device and when the LED notification lights turn on press several times Volume Up or Volume down buttons.
3. At the end, your Xperia Z3 will be rebooted into recovery mode.
If you found this helpful, there's a thanks button, just press it
I don't think there's any stock recovery on Z3, what are you trying to do?
There is no stock recovery on xperia devices. (The Z3v has a very basic one but only wipes cache's)
You need to root and install a custom one.

D2303 software problem

hello i have a problem with xperia m2 d2303 firmware it stuck on boot, when i trying to install firmware with flashtool there is no option to wipe data and cache. after installing firmware phone stuck on the purple waves. what i need to do? thanks for the answer.
Your best option is to use PC Companion and tell it to rebuild the phone wiping the data.
mtp usb drivers failed to install and can't do something with pc comparison
Turn off the phone them hold vol up and connect the USB cable it should install somc fast boot drivers then repeat holding vol down whilst connecting USB it will install the flash drivers

Cannot launch recovery M2 D2303

Because my M2 D2303 GPS is unusable right now (doesn't update position) see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m2/help/5-1-1-gps-issue-lollipop-update-t3219099
I downgraded to 4.4.2 thinking that would fix the GPS. It didn't.
So now i have an M2 D2303 with Android 4.4.2 And an unusable gps.
What i'm trying to do now i root the thing to apply the fix found on the thread above. But i can't make the recovery work.
What i've tried:
I've flashed the boot with several kernels i've found. with 2 outcomes:
1- (13.3 MB img file) The phone shows sony logo then blinks black/grey (looks briked), cannot enter recovery mode.
2.-(14 MB img file) The phone works, still cannot enter recovery mode.
I also tried several ways to enter the recovery menu:
-Hold power+vol-, release power but leave vol- pressed...phone boots normal.
-Press power and repeatedly press vol-....phone boots normal.
So either all the boot.img i found suck or i don't understand how to make menu come up.
Bootloader is unlocked btw dunno if that helps.
Any ideas appreciated.

Flash 4.4.4, root it with linuxct's method, or download the kingroot app. After rooting use the philz locked bootloader multi recovery if you really want a recovery.
Use linuxct's method, Kingroot is the last thing you should be using to root your phone. Works on most if not all kk roms
