[Q] Signal strength is 0 with valid SIM and GSM only mode - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have Google Nexus 5 D821 and I have reset it to Android 5.1.1 using factory image from Google. Everything works fine, but when I insert a valid SIM card, signal strength is 0. When I try to search for all networks available, phone finds no networks. When I select an option to choose the network automatically, I get a warning message that it's not possible for the moment.
I tried entering phone debugging mode with *#*#4636#*#* and there's some information about operator and phone number (probably, it is stored on the SIM card), but phone is always in 'Emergency calls only' mode.
Is there something I can do about it? Is it about hardware? If yes, which component I can try to replace?
Thanks for any advice you might have.

Maybe an antenna cable is loose. Mine had that problem on 3g network.

Cheers !

I have same probleme with white cable antenna on Nexus 5. Changing the cable solved the problem.

[Q] [HELP] HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE unable to connect to network

I am from India, using HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE in GSM/UMTS Mode. I tried this fake id method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986346, but after I did nothing seems to change, so i did it like maybe three times. In the third time the phone stays in a mode something like the temproot mode where the screen becomes unresponsive and I only have the status bar on top, I can go to settings, but wasn't able to connect to my phone network carrier, only able to connect to WiFi. So, when that happens I tried flashing a stock rom 2.17.605.2 RUU http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770978 using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2214653 method, I am able to flash the phone, but the problem with the network connecting is not fixed, so now I am unable to use my phone for call, text, any services except Wifi connection. And when I search for any available network I could see the list, but when I click my carrier it said the SIM card is unable to register to the network. So I remove my SIM and insert in another phone, it seems my SIM card has failed to register, so I thought it may be my SIM so I took another SIM card and insert it in my phone, still I cannot connect to the network. Is there a way to solve this? What can be the cause of this?

[Q] Network mode cannot set to 3G

Just got my Nexus 5 today.
However, in Wireless&networks / Mobile networks / Network Mode, I can only set it as 2G or LTE but not 3G.
I am currently on b-mobile in Japan and my Nexus 4 works fine on the network.
Wondering is it some sort of bug of KitKat or is it somewhat related to the SIM card I am using...

Probably the sim card. Mine gives me the option, but another n5 on a different network (o2/UK) doesn't.

hmm, in my case, I can see the 3G option, just that whenever I select the 3G option, the system would automatically reset it when I navigate to other page.
Is that also the case on your N5 with O2/UK sim card?
On the other hand, I will test my N5 on different sim card tomorrow.
I have the same issue. If I select 4g, the dot stays when I go back, but I only get a full bar 2g connection. If I select 3g and go back, no dot is there but I only get a 2g connection.
Sometimes this was solved in previous handsets by going into the service menu and selecting 3g/2g from there.

I also tried forcing the N5 to use 3G only (by going into the test menu with "*#*#4636#*#*" code) but it still does not work...
OK, so I tried the SIM cards from my colleges, and my N5 can connect to 3G without problem.
It's weird that my SIM card works perfectly well on N4 but NOT N5...
Did not experience such SIM card computability issue before...

Works for me now. Went into that test menu and selected GSM/CDMA auto PRL and I now have 3g. Didn't have to reboot.

I am also having the same problem, purchased the Nexus 5 from carphonewarehouse, can set on 4G or 2G, but when i set to 3G and comeback, it resets. Is that a SIM card problem? I tried to go on testing mode and apply GSM/CDMA auto PRL, that also not working. Is that a KitKat bug?
Same problem on Orange/EE in the UK. I can see the 3G option but phone won't let me change to 3G. Option never sticks. Just stays on 2G. Any ideas? Is this a known bug?
Thanks 101

i think it's not a bug.i think it's a hardware problem. i'm having it with vodafone italy.
Same here on T-Mobile Austria :/
Already changed SIM card, without success. Maybe provider related issues?

I'm on straight talk TT&T with a new SIM card, but sometimes the network mode doesn't stick. No idea why...
replaced a new 3G SIM, no luck
Just replaced a new 3G SIM Card didn't work the 3G option for me - Chunghwa Telecom Taiwan.
But I can select 2G, and dial number to make a phone call, so the SIM slot seem works fine, maybe just configuration issue?!
And, also I find a very annoying defect of my Nexus 5 32G(White), when hard-reset or flash to Factory Image, my Nexus 5 32G white goes crazy!! it just keep stuck and loop at Google Logo (not even show the 4 circle animation), and won't boot at all!
And I finally find a way to make it boot, by keep trying repeat flash factory, erasing userdata, erasing cache etc. is every had this issue?
EE/T-Mobile (uk) and I can't select 3g either, well I can but it doesn't stick.
I have a similar problem, except I can only select 3G / 4G, and not 2G because the 2G option isn't even displayed!! So infuriating. It still works through the *#*#4636#*#* menu, if I select GSM only then it does indeed go to 2G.
Is it possible that the SIM is somehow telling the phone OS it can't do 2G only? This didn't happen with my old carrier (same phone, only just switched). I have a feeling it's caused by the same thing that makes my phone number show up as 'unknown' now, too.
I have the same issue, I tried two different SIM, on is a Straight Talk sim that is set up to use the ATT network and used a T-Mobile sim card, both were unable to keep 3G as a setting.
My Nexus 5 seems that reluctant to drop from 3g to 2g when 4g is selected i have given up and now just manually select 2g to make sure i have a signal (im out in the sticks a bit). Sat at the PC with 4g selected i get no signal whatsoever, with 2g selected i get an indicated full signal strength.
Why on earth the N5 is so reluctant to dip its toe in the 2g territory when no data is on is beyond me.

Nexus 5 Cellular Issues!

I have been using my Nexus 5 for a while and I noticed something very strange. On my status bar it will show a cellular connection but I will not actually have connection. Then when I go to quick settings it will show emergency calls only only with no connection. I then need to go to airplane mode on and off to reconnect. Weird.
Any solutions?
Anyone else?

Hey there I have the same issue as well!! By any chance are you using a nano Sim card with a micro Sim card adapter as well? I am worry it is the contact between the pins??
Airplane mode
Just try to look at one of: lock screen, notification bar (after connected with WiFi), settings - APN Name, ##4636# mobile phone status.
If you can find correct mobile service provider name, it seems that your SIM card is recognized correctly. If not, try another sim card.
After it, try ##4636# select GSM Only or CDMA only, to see if it can connects. And some info shows if you are using sprint card, you should connect sprint service to provide your MEID. Search if you using sprint.

[Q] Sim not connected to network

Hi,
I have H60-L02 version with B307 from some time now and lately I noticed that, without warning, one or both sims are been disconnected from network, putting me in the situation in which I cannot make or receive calls. If I change from 2G to 3G on sim 1 it reconnects.
The fact which is more annoying is that in disconnected state on the status bar it shows that I have network signal on both sims. For checking if I'm effectively connected to network I have to go in "Settings-About phone-Status-Network" and verify the Service state.
Anyone had this problem, and if so, is there a workaround ?
Thank you.
I got similar problems with the SIM card. I've got the international h60-l04 on stock firmware with one SIM slot and the mobile connection fails every time. The Status Bar says there is a connection, but it isnt stable. It switches every few seconds.
I tried to delete the APN, forcing 2G and 3G and havent got a sollten, yet. I first thought it's a firmware failure.
Is there any solution for this? I have the similar problem as well... My model is H60-L02.
Thanks..

S10e is losing connection to mobile network

Hello!
I have this s10e from Verizon and it is network unlock (I talked to Verizon to confirm this), well I bought it new and as soon as I turn it on, it started to upgrade to Android 11. All the update went without any issue, anyway when update was completed. I inserted my SIM card and I did not connect to the mobile network. I went to settings and open connections > Mobile networks change from Global to LTE/GSM/UMTS and manual to select the network. Network selected and I got the message "Can't register on the network" , I try again and it connects but after some minutes it lost the signal and got the message "Unable to connect, try later"
I have try several options, all with the same result, it connects for a while then it lost the connection and it won't reconnect until I try it manually...
These is what I have tried (not ordered in the way I tried them)
- Network Reset (including APN reset to default)
- Manually select the network (I go from Global to LTE/GSM/UMTS and backwards)
- Pull out the SIM, turn off the cell, insert SIM turn it on. When phone turns on sometimes it connects immediately to the mobile network but after it completes the initialization, the cell disconects.
- Erase the cache from the Phone app.
- Wipe cache
- Factory reset
I know it is not the phone because I have a Verizon SIM card and when I inserted it, the cell works flawless, actually since I'm out of USA, the cell connects to the same mobile network (on roaming) I'm trying to use with my SIM card. So I was thinking of downgrade to Android 11 but I found some threads where they reported the same issue (with Android 10) but no solution or they pointed to the workarounds I already tried so I don't think it is an Android 11 bug.
Does anyone knows something about this? any workaround?
Thank you!!

Just guessing as your have already tried many things.
Maybe you still have Verizon CSC installed what works fine with the Verizon SIM card, but leads to unstable mobile connection with another SIM card.
To check, download unbranded firmware for your region and flash it with Odin on PC via USB cable to your phone.
Use the CSC file ... Not the Home_CSC. This will wipe your data.
How this will help.
