Yo guys! After a series of tips on Saving Battery Life in Android Phones,
I am here with a set of tips for Saving your Internet Data!
Again here, I am focusing on unrooted users, whereas will be useful for rooted users too.
So obviously, this tips will also help you to implement a faster browsing experience!
Let's Begin!
SELECTION OF BROWSERS
When talking about Internet Browsers for Android, many browsers claim to give you a faster internet browsing experience, and YES, they do the same too, No doubt.
But when you think about getting a good Speed, plus have a limited data plan, you can always try these great alternatives provided by the Developers.
1. UC BROWSER MINI:
Talking about the UC Browser, which is nearly sized at 15 MB+, this Mini version of it can help you gain speed and lower the use of data with it.
Sized up to nearly 1.20+ MB, UC Browser Mini assures you a light weight browsing experience.
TIPS TO BE TRIED WHEN USING UC MINI:
~Turn On the 'Speed Mode'.
~Try Cloud Download Mode when downloading large sized files on your Phone so that it won't fail while downloading!
Download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uc.browser.en&hl=en
2. OPERA BROWSER MINI:
When coming to Opera Mini, this is one of the most browsing oriented Browser for Android!
Sized nearly 2.80+ MB, Opera Mini highly relies on compressed pages, so automatically you get a compressed version of the site that you load in the browser, in short, speed is guaranteed, even on a 2G network.
Well, downloading isn't a USP of this browser, as it mostly focuses on browsing.
TIPS TO BE TRIED WHEN USING OPERA MINI:
~Go to Settings/ and 'Turn on the Single Column View' option. This compresses the pages to fit in the portrait size, so again, it will reduce your data usage till 2 times, comparing to other browsers.
Download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.opera.mini.native&hl=en
3. BOAT BROWSER MINI:
While talking about Boat Browser Mini, the one line description is: A Mobile Site Oriented Browser demanding low space.
Boat Browser Mini loads the pages just like other big sized browsers do, but it is sized to only 3.4 MB. This is a great alternative if you are looking for a browser demanding COMPARATIVELY low data, and space without losing the essence of Mobile browsing.
Well, this browser has a great in build Download Manager too!
TIPS TO BE TRIED WHEN USING BOAT BROWSER MINI:
~While Exiting through the browser, click on 'Clear Cache and Then Exit' option. This may help you reduce excessive cache from the websites.
Download it Here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boatgo.browser
4. FACEBOOK LITE:
The new entry! Facebook lite, from Facebook Inc., is a great alternative for the Official Facebook app and Facebook Messenger together!
Features [As described by Facebook Inc.]
-Fast to install – the app is less than 1MB
-Quick to load
-Efficient with data
-Designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity.
This app has inbuilt Real Time Push Notifications, so that you won't miss any message or Notis!
Download it here: http://www.facebook.com/lite
DISABLING APPSUnrooted phones do NOT have a choice to uninstall applications that are provided in the firmware.
But fortunately, Android OS has provided a option called 'Disable' in the app info menu, so that you can Disable the apps that you don't use or rarely use.
-Go to Settings/Apps/ [Or App Manager in some devices]
-Open the menu of app that you don't want to use or rarely use.
-Click on 'Disable'
-DONE.
You can enable it back whenever you face a need for it.
Frankly speaking, I have the Google Play Store and YouTube apps disabled in my device. I enable those whenever needed, use it and again disable it.
This helps my data to last longer.
So, you may also implement the same.
Be aware that you DO NOT Disable the Google Play Services! :fingers crossed:
MISCELLANEOUS-Turn Off Sync when not needed.
-Turn of Data when not needed.
APPS THAT CAN HELP YOU
GREENIFY:
When it comes to battery/data saving, Greenify CANNOT be missed!
For unrooted users,
1. Install Greenify from Play Store. [It's Free.]
2. Go to Settings/Accessibility and Turn On Greenify.
3. Open Greenify and click on "+" symbol. Now select apps that you rarely use, like All the Internet Browsers, Games, Photo Editors, etc.
4. Now after selecting get back to main screen of the app and press "Zzz" icon. It will start hibernating the apps.
5. Place Hibernate Apps+Lock Screen widget on Home screen.
6. Whenever you are bout to Lock the screen, just press the shortcut. It will force close all the running apps and lock the screen automatically after that!

In India, the data rates are quite high, and most of the public doen't know the exact reasons why there data is being used so quick, hence it shall helpful for developing countries!

Currently our current doctrine is to be app obsessed, and to admit it, i am too BUT the more apps = less space, higher battery consumption, more FC, more browsing time, slower app market startup times, higher cpu strain and my personal favourite opening the process manager and clicking "kill all"
I suggest something different, Not new, many of you may already know this but still take some time to try it. web apps.
I found that by removing apps and using their mobile web app via the browser to be far more effective and efficient, as the browser is powerful, stable and is an amazingly easy program on that gorgeous 4inch screen. and i suplement the ease of access by putting these web apps on my desktop via the bookmark shortcut
Some examples
Google reader, (via igoogle)
Google mail g-cal and g-maps via igoogle (almost pointless as you cant really remove the pre installed apps , maybe with root)
ebuddy via their website, (only problem is background multi tasking)
i removed the xda app (gasp) in favour for just a shortcut link
google weather
i removed wiki droid and just used the website
i have noticed an increase in performance and my battery too but ill hold that verdict for about another week, but it helps as you actively close a browser window wen ur finished with it without leaving it running in the B/G
post some ideas and alternates you have found.
Its a fine balance...

Well.. I would agree with you about the app obsessed part, when users tend to download all sorts of applications sometime multiple apps for the same purpose. I believe in the "Zen" philosophy (a la Zenwalk Linux), which basically means that you use a single *good* application for a single purpose, sometime select the more featured one which lets say lets you perform multiple features instead of just one... ASTRO file manager is a good example.
For the web part, I have mixed feelings... for example I tried several apps for reading my feeds on google reader, but ultimately realized that the best one was to use the web browser.
However, technically speaking an application (a well written one) should be more efficient than its web counterpart. Take for example Google Maps. Running things in a web browser is essentially adding another layer between you and your app isnt it? Plus, I really doubt that the web interface is expressive enough to allow for all kinds of application areas... background apps is one example.
So... I'm on the side of applications, although one has to take care to properly select them and avoid filling up your phone with crap. So far haven't had to use any task killers etc as I think Android manages that for you.

Good argument, brilliantly written, and i do agree with you But look above you mentioned "well written apps" wel thats the big disadvantage of android, mass incompatibility, the amount if half assed apps ive installed is phenominal, even more surprising is that badly written apps are so common, its not unique to find the abbrevieation "FC" in the comments section of many apps due to the amount of time force closing occurs.
what im stressing is that the browser is strong, its stable, its sexc, complete that sometimes people shouldnt waste time or money on apps but to use a simple bookmark, THAT said there are plenty of apps that are brilliant and stable or dont have a browser alternative (games for instance)
YES astro is amazing, BUT and i hate to crAPPLE quote but there was a hack for the iphone where you could use the browser as a file manager / fttp/ssh/ bluetooth client etc so that would be cool to see on android.
I've tested at LEAST 14 browsers and I have yet to find one that I would use exclusively.
My requirements are simple (and in no particular order):
- must be able to play flash
- must have a working adblocker
- must be able to share pages with other apps
- must be able to copy/paste text
- syncing bookmarks/passwords, etc. would be desired
- must keep open tabs INTACT when I leave the app (multitask). I don't care if the tabs reload after a certain time, but it must not lose my tabs!
That's it... but apparently, what one browser has in features, it lacks in features.
Here are some examples:
Stock browser:
Pros: plays flash, text selection works, syncs bookmarks, can share pages.
Cons: no adblocker, slow, unstable, tabs often get lost when returning back to the browser.
Firefox:
Pros: adblocker (second to none!), great interface, has session restore, syncs everything(!), can share pages, addon support.
Cons: no text handling (can't select text), no flash, fairly unstable.
Opera Mini
Pros: best tab handling if you don't leave the app for too long (I've had over 20 tabs restore for me no problem), very fast, low bandwidth consumption, text handling works, can share pages, can sync bookmarks.
Cons: doesn't display desktop versions of websites (major pain!), no flash, no adblocker.
Opera Mobile (see above, minus the great tab handling)
Maxthon
Pros: flash, sync feature (although I don't use Maxthon on PC, so it's less useful), can share pages, text handling works.
Cons: sync feature requires manually logging in each session, no adblock, often poor tab handling with multitasking.
Zirco browser
Pros: adblocker, flash (although not working right now), can share pages
Cons: no sync, poor tab handling, non-working text selection, flash not showing video only audio.
Dolphin HD
Pros: flash, text selection works, can share pages
Cons: no useful sync, no working adblock, doesn't handle tabs well with multitasking
I've tested many more, but these are the "major" ones...
Why can't I find a browser that can do the few things that I need??

You can remove ads by using AdFree but it requires access to root. This removes ads universally throughout the system.

Yes, I've used Adfree before, but it's lacks the ability to turn off/on the adblocker at will - plus, I had issues with it blocking too well... LOL I prefer something integrated into the browser.

*****WHY THIS POST*****
Hey guys, I am a product manager of UC Browser and to make it a better one we need to hear from more users especially you fellows. We do hope you could leave us some comments about the very product no matter it is a compliment or criticism, we are all ears. Thank you.
How about upload manager? That's what android really needs. You currently have to use opera to file browse and upload. This worked fine on winmo, I still Dont understand how its not considered a basic feature in android.
Thanks for sharing.

So I tried it...
and got some issues...
that browser is good looking and it works fast.
But:
I can't see the multiple language support.
If you want to make it "world wide" you should allow users from outside the U.S. delete/edit Speed dial items to chose from. Let's say (for example) "Mercado Libre" is not as interesting as you might think.
Concerning all of your browsers: the "help buttons" are a joke, can't get any real information here.
Why don't you offer ad free versions of UC Browser and UC Browser mini? I would pay to use them.
You should give a clear statement which user data is collected/forwarded to your servers.
Regards!
Good browser. Using it for a time, but... Too many permission!

Hello, random hero. Thanks for your review.:good:
First I am sorry that I made a mistake because the beta version is only for English, the current version on Google Play and the release version for 9.0 support 7 languages. For the Speed Dial, you can long press on it to remove, and an edit option is put into consideration. Also the websites for Speed Dial recommendation are not very carefully chosen because it's the beta test, it is certain that the official release will make it right.
The content in "Help" may not provide really helpful info for users, as you mentioned, I have reported this to my colleague to make it with more guidance.
For the ad-free version, we will consider it seriously. For the moment, we are not pushing many ads to the browser and it's for sure that user experience is our priority. Thanks again for your feedback.:fingers-crossed:
Hello finally someone to listen for uc browser
Okay
This was the best browser on symbian and having used it for a long time I am way disappointed by the Android version
I have used both the normal and hd version
And here it goes
1) )u guys have an awesome in browser down loader I use this browser for precisely this purpose
One thing that can be added to the downloader is the option of changing links for an active download which stops like we do in loaderdroid download manager
2) the server compression program doesn't work as good as expected for countries like India
3) it displays annoying messages which should be hidden
Like page zoom saved there's no need to display that
4) the pinch to zoom is laggy as compared to any other browser
Talking about the normal version not the tablet one
Yes I mean it as compared to any other browsers and I am on s3 so it cannot be a hardware issue
Pinch to zoom needs to be way more smooth
5) the tablet version does not have any advanced option that used to exist in the symbjan version
So please change this also.....
6) the ui of the normal version is in general laggy
U need to let go of some of the transition effects and stick to faster animations
Rest I believe this browser has the potential to be the best android browser ever even better than chrome if u guys work on it
Right now my choice is naked browser
Feature requests
1) 1click copy paste and go like naked browser and copy all like naked browser
2) link changes for paused downloads like loader DROID download manager
3) porting features from s60v3 versions

Thanks for you feedback.
About the "upload" function, do you mean something like "Skydrive" on winmo?
To browser files on your device, you can use file manager in UC Browser (Setting-General-Downloads-File Manager), and the official release of UC Browser 9.0 will have UDisk(a free online storage function) so that you can upload and keep your files on the "cloud":fingers-crossed:
Yup and I almost forgot to applaud u guys for the browser stability this is a very stable browser and the download process is far more stable than any other browser be it default or third party this means no page reloads due to lack of ram etc
In terms of stability this is the best browser ever
But ui is laggy in the normal version so not using presently
Tablet version is so fat good will report after trying
Also what happened to the forum mode u guys had on the symbian version single most used feature by me
Reimplement it here
There was another feature which was pre loading pages wherever the word next etc appears and displaying them as continuous pages in the same page
Came in handy when reading or viewing vuclip
Reimplement it on Android
These are the unique features to ur browser u gotta bring it to the table

A very big apk and eats too much RAM. And it is slower than I thought. Totaly useless on my huawei sonic. Even stock browser is much better.
Hey fellows,
Check out the official release, hope it works great on your devices. You are also welcome to give more feedback. Thanks again.
Quick overview:
Keep My Opera is an app that protects the Opera browser from being killed without reason.
compatible with Android version 2.1+ (tested on 4.x)
benefits from root access (but can be used without)
just an app, does not depend on custom rom or kernel versions
risk free (makes no patches to kernel or system partition)
consumes very few resources
free and ad-free
Opera Mobile can still be killed if truly necessary for other apps to run
makes no sense unless you are an Opera poweruser
Importance notice about update to v0.58 (28th July 2013):
Keep My Opera can now protect any app, not just Opera Mobile.
The documentation below has not (yet) been updated. It is for the old version v0.52 (which is still available as attachment).
With the new version you can choose which app you want to be protected. It is useful to protect another flavor of Opera, such as Opera Classic (for those of you who hate the new blink-based Opera Mobile).
Note that you can now choose any app of your liking, including other browsers or e-book readers!
What Keep My Opera tries to solve:
Android proactively terminates memory hogs soon after you stop using them. The Opera Mobile web browser is one such memory hog. Web pages are ever increasing in complexity and thus lots of memory is needed to display them.
If you use Opera Mobile a lot, you may like it to stay in memory even while you use other apps. After all, once force-terminated, it takes time and connectivity and bandwidth to reload all those web pages.
When another app needs memory, Android recovers it with the "out of memory" killer (OOM). Opera Mobile is one of the first victims to be killed, ecause of the high memory footprint.
Opera Mobile can also be terminated when Android thinks that you don't use it anymore, for example after you have left it in the background for a while. This happens without actually needing the memory, it's rather just preparing free memory already now for when someone might use it later.
I don't like this behaviour of Android, and so I created Keep My Opera. It tells Android that I'm using Opera (even while I'm not), and it gets killed less
often.
How to use Keep My Opera:
Once installed, you get to review some options and then you activate it. A notification item will appear indicating that Keep My Opera is running.
Touch the notificaton if you want to further change the options, or when you want to stop Keep My Opera.
Enabling everything listed under "Functional Options" achieves the most complete protection.
Note that after rebooting your phone, you have to start Keep My Opera again.
Method #1: Protect process memory (root)
With "Protect process memory" enabled, Keep My Opera will reset the OOM data of Opera Mobile every few seconds.
This helps against the first type of killing (see above) because it makes Opera Mobile a less attractive victim. The OOM killer doesn't notice the real memory usage and decides to kill other things first. If that doesn't help to satisfy the pressing memory needs, of course Opera Mobile can still be killed - it's just not highest on the list. This ensures that you can use your other apps and games normally, without fear of them closing underneath your finger.
This feature requires root access, and also a working installation of BusyBox. It won't do anything without those two, in fact it could even hang and force-close if you enable the option but do not have root or busybox.
The reset action is performed in the /proc filesystem which resides in RAM. There are no permanent changes of any kind, and you can get rid of it simply by stopping Keep My Opera or disabling the option.
Method #2: Move Opera to front (without root)
The other important functionality is "Move Opera to front". It helps against the second type of killing, where Android thinks that you are not using it anymore. Whenever you put your phone to sleep, Opera Mobile will be moved in front of all other apps. When you unlock your phone, it will be the first thing you see. Android will not kill it "just because" - after all, it is the last thing you have "used".
It helps quite a bit to keep Opera Mobile running, and it works without root. However, it is may only be for Opera hardliners like me. I want my web pages to always be cached in RAM, so I can read during the few seconds of an elevator ride etc.
If you don't want Opera Mobile in your face everytime you unlock your phone, you may still be able to use this feature. Read on:
Companion app: Go to Homescreen
This app makes the "Move Opera to front" feature somewhat more tolerable. It pulls the homescreen to front whenever it is activated, and its icon looks like a lock.
Pin it to your lockscreen (provided that your phone supports lockscreen shortcuts), and it drops you off at your homescreen instead of Opera. You can benefit from "Move Opera to front", yet get fewer strange looks from other people when you hand them your phone.

Keep My Opera v0.52 (bugfix)
The APK attached to the first post has been updated to version v0.52.
This is a bugfix release. The bug affects phones which do not turn the screen on after a phonecall ends. CM10.1 is an example for such a ROM (and Samsung stock is not). In the previous version, Opera would then not be brought to front. This is fixed in v0.52.
Can you add more apps, not just opera?

Great work Jetmarc, I'm an Opera hardliner too and have been waiting for a solution like this so thanks.
Keep My Opera v0.58 (enhancement)
The APK attached to the first post has been updated to Keep My Opera v0.58.
This is an enhancement release, responding to the requests made here in the thread.
You can now choose other flavors of Opera (such as Opera Classic or Opera Mini), as well as completely different browsers or e-book readers.
After you update, review the new configuration option to make sure that the correct app is selected for protection. Note that loading the list of installed apps takes a few seconds. You have to wait for this process to complete when you use Keep My Opera for the first time, and also when you want to change the protected app. Otherwise you can safely ignore it.
Let me know if this enhancement meets your needs, and if there is anything else that can be improved.
An alternative way to keep Opera running: a dummy service
Hello jetmarc and others, I also suffer from this problem a long time, and I was looking everywhere to get a solution. The best solution I previously found was a modded version of Opera Mobile with an added dummy service, which prevents Android from killing Opera, found in Opera forum. (I'm not allowed to post links yet, but the thread title is "Opera and Samsung Galaxy 3 a bunch of crap..." and the poster of the modification is "knumsole", you'll find it when you google it.)
Unfortunately, the moderators of the Opera forum removed that unofficial mod, but I was lucky enough to download it before. I attached it here. Use it at your own risk, it seems to cause no problems for me. Most important: It got NEVER killed.
But unfortunately again, that is an old version of Opera Mobile (11.5) which has problems to display some pages.
So I tried also this "Keep my Opera" (0.58) together with a new version of Opera Classic and I'm relativly happy with that: Opera got only killed one time in a day so far!
But anyway, the solution I would prefer, would be a new version of Opera with that added dummy service. As I said, it got NEVER killed on my android.
So does anyone know how to add a dummy service to a recent version of Opera? I tried to contact the previous author on Opera Forum, but wasn't succesful.
thanks work android 4.3
I'd like the pages to load fast and being able to keep several tabs open at the same time. Preferably 10", but 8" could be OK also.
My Tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
My tablet is very fast when browsing and I usally have 8 to 10 tabs open at the same time, sometimes many more.
I have tried every major/commercial browser on the market and almost every browser created by small developer.
The fastest browser I found with the best privacy is Naked Browser Pro, I also love the constant full screen, I see nothing but the websites all the time, no stupid browser bells and whistles to block the view and I surf safely with javascript turned off by default and enable it for trusted websites with a single simple button push. NB Pro also has the smallest memory footprint I found which is why I can open so many tabs at the same time.
Go with the 10 inch screen it really makes a difference, no matter which brand you choose, it feels and acts more like a laptop/desktop computer than a convienent toy.
The only thing about the Samsungs is the large amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed but it is easy to disable most of it using the built-in control/settings panel, I have not had to root it yet for performance reasons and i'm a power user.
On a side note, the NB Pro browser I told you about is very plain and simple looking, I almost did not try it, use the free version for a couple days first, once you figure it out you will see that it's power and speed are mainly due to it's simplicity and the clever programming you do not see, what do you want a pimped out browser that you pay for in speed/memory/privacy or a lightning fast browser that displays the entire webpage without the clutter?
p.s. This is not a paid endorsement I do not even know the developer of Naked Browser, I just hate poser developers that spy on you and lie about it. Whatever you do, do not use the Dolphin browser, it spies on you while sending every single link you visit to a series of servers in the background and you cannot disable that, it's 'free' for a reason, they sell you out to marketers and god knows who else. Firefox is a memory hog, Opera is too slow for me and Chrome is OK but privacy is a question.
