I started using Tylt Vu with Note 3 fitted with aftermarket Qi receiver. Vertical charging overheated the phone but it was fine when placed horizontally. Fast forward to now : Note 4 with Samsung original wireless charger back cover. Same phenomenon. With horizontal placement, it is almost not warm at all. Vertically it is super hot to the point I feel not safe for the battery.
My initial theory was that two coils must have got active and more heat generated. So decided to detach additional coils. I opened up and inside looks as you can see in the image below. For the sake of clarity, let coils be 1, 2 and 3 from top to bottom. When Note 4 is placed vertically, center of phone doesn't align with coil 2 but like 1 cm above it. So my theory of two coils getting activated looked correct. I detached coil 1. With phone vertical, it is clearly out of reach for coil 3 to get activated. Hence coil 2 for vertical and coil 3 for horizontal placements. BUT overheating didn't go away.
My next theory : As you can see coil 2 sitting above coil 1 and 3, it touches charger base and heat gets easily transferred to the pad. Or maybe it is closer to the phone, more electricity gets inducted by coil 2 and hence more heat. And to back this theory, when phone is vertical not only the phone but charging pad gets hot too.
Will be sticking with horizontal charging until better charger comes by.

When you are in vertical mode, do you check that your receiver in centered with one of the couls? Maybe when in horizontal the receiver and one of the coils are perfectly aligned?

I remember checking picture posted by someone who had peeled off original back. I have been searching for that so I know where exactly coil is located in the charging cover. I am searching for phones among friends who have aftermarket Qi coil so I can test and confirm center coil of Tylt Vu is the culprit.

Black one for me (dark S4), white one for wife (white S4).
Her's has a switch on the back to choose between for charge mode (via micro-usb) vs. audio out mode (via 3.5mm audio cable), mine has a slot to charge a spare battery in the back. It doesn't charge when set to audio-out. The white one came w/two USB cables - one for a power adapter, one for computer.
Our S4s fit easily into the dock w/their cases on (we're using the slim TPU-like cases that Costco includes w/the phones), with some wiggle room on each side and front-to back. The micro-USB connection is tight enough that you have to use two hands to put it in or take it out, which I prefer for safety/stability. (There are comments in the reviews regarding cases the docks work/do not fit.) The docks come w/their own 1.5A charger and cable, but we just connected the micro-USB charging cord that Samsung provides w/the phones to the back of the docks.
The docks come w/an insert that you can leave in for a phone w/out a case, or remove if you are using a case.
The two docks look pretty much exactly the same except for their configuration for battery charging vs. audio out/charge switch, but they come from two different suppliers and have different names. But the source manufacturer certainly looks like it's the same.
For $25 we're pretty happy, takes up very little space on the nightstand, appears to be well enough made, and the fit is good w/the case on, which has always been an issue w/other phones we've owned, not fitting, or not fitting well w/a case on. Would buy these again...

Yeah, the main point of this thread was that these docks work w/out having to remove the case, which for many of us is a must. Taking the case off and putting it back on every day gets very annoying, very quickly.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Mod
[*]Today I'm going to show you guys how to make a Galaxy S4 wireless Charging Mod .(I'll detail the process as far as possible,PLZ Let me know if I missed anything!!!!:cyclops
[*] Theoretically this mod works for any phone which support USB charging and has extra 1.5mm gap between back cover and battery.
[*] But this mod will not work on the phone which comes with a metal cover (IE: I897 , iPhone 4-4s),
Because metal is kind of electromagnetic shielding material, it will block magnetic energy.
[*] If you have a plan put this on iPhone 4 or 4S , You will have to separate the metal sheet from the glass back cover, then trim a hole then bind these back.(Twitter me about the details @wifixit_iphone)
[*]Alert: DO Not Trying to connect this mod directory to the battery connector.

Ok Let's get started !!!!!!!!:highfive:
(1) At first I'm going to introduce what's in this mod kit.

As I know most of people will buy a pixi or pre back cover then peel the coil and sticker from it.
But u should be very careful when peeling off the silver sticker,
Any bend or damage will increase the risk of disturbing energy transfer.
(1) Test before installing or soldering the coil to your phone.
Once you put the coil and sticker above the touchstone you will hear some buzzing .
5.60v Non loaded voltage is normal..
(2) Find the Negative and Positive Terminal on your phone. MARK DOWN
This is ATT SAMSUNG GALAXY S4.
(This is just for reference cause some carrier has their own version )
( Some version of S4 will not come with this connector,if you know circuit board you can solder wire directory to the component which controls USB CHARGING )
(3) Now we can work on the coil part.
Desolder two square copper
The red big square area is positive u set ur positive terminal in anywhere within this area.
[I @wifixit_iphone me if you dont understand this step.[/I]
(4) Trim the Nickle stick or copper tape
On S4 I just cut two thick nickel stick and solder these two connectors (in the first pic) to the stick.
Align the connector before you bonding the coil to your back cover.
@wifixit_iphone me if you don't understand this step.
(This is importan!!~~!!~~)
Thanks for Reading.

yep this mod was.in. the back cover. will not block sim sd or battery.
Heres a few pics of the note 4 with samsung qi back and the iblason armorbox. phone charges great thru the back with no issues. its dusty and ive dropped it twice using it in a machine shop and the phone is undamaged/unscratched. looks brand new if you remove it from the case.
finger print reader is disabled due to front plastic but nfc/cam/rear spo2 sensors all work ok

It's funny because this is the only case that actually fits the Note 4 with the modified back cover to accommodate the wireless charging feature. I'm returning my wireless cover to Samsung; there's no point to constantly remove and re-fit my Otterbox Defender when wirelessly charging. If only if samsung employed better design specialists. The cover warms up your device considerably according to other reviewers for the wireless back cover Made by Samsung. Add a case on top, there goes a meltdown. .
It's good to know though, that the i-Blason case fits well. Initial reviews of this case seemed to be fake, so I resorted back to Otterbox. I bet you that iBlason's suppliers are the same employees making cases for Otterbox, haha. I knew I should have purchased the i-Blason case. Cheers!

mine stays at a reasonable temp with the samsung qi back and the armorbox. never seen it heat up significantly. it gets a little warm but not excessive.
I think it depends on the charger. When on my nexus charger, it stays cool. On one of those cheap charging pucks it heats up quickly.
Might there be a docking station for the Note 4 that's usable while the phone is in a case?
Not that I'm aware of. The Note two official dock works a treat with the Note four, but regrettable not with a case.
You'll find a case-friendly dock nigh impossible to come by because if it fits in the dock with a case on chances are it wouldn't fit properly without one. And then if a company DID decide to go that route they'd have to choose WHICH case to tailor their dock for, as many case have different thicknesses. A silicone case? A metal one? A flip case? They're all profoundly different when it comes to something like a dock that needs a snug fit to work well.
Unless you're handy with woodwork/metalwork/lego you can make your own dock to charge your device with your chosen medium and a USB cord. I know there's a guy somewhere who made a sweet-ass lego one that fits his QI charging mat in.
Sorry, I know it's not the answer you wanted to hear. Hope it helps nonetheless.
I bought an RND dock that does work, but with a caveat; if you have a case, the phone is basically balancing on the USB port itself, with no other support. I guess the only way they could think of to fit any sort of case was to have a removable insert on the base, but it then means you're not supporting your phone completely. Not thrilled about that, but I was getting tired of prying my case off every night just to dock it, so this is the best solution I could find.

Which case are you using? That might help. I have the Note 2 Dock which worked w/ my Note 4, but not when it was in the UAG case.

The Note 4 with that case works in the Note 2 smart dock; you do have to cut the USB port cover off but then it's perfect.
There's a kidigi one that has an insert for naked phone and take it off for a reasonably thick case.
Check out the lamdba dockings (search for "docking lambda"). Can be adapted from 1-10mm in thickness of the phone and the phone is not only standing on the connector

I want a charging plate that's no wider than my S5, and at the same time isn't higher than max 5 mm, preferably smaller. Are there any plates that can cover both those criteria? It's a pain in the ass when I have to mess with the charging cable, especially on longer multi-day trips, where I often take breaks and leave the bike, and I use the phone as a GPS with the screen on all the time.

this one might work for you! the width of this qi plate in the widest part is couple mm wider than my S5 (in superslim case) and height is about the same as S5 as well. the question is how you gonna avoid using cables with qi plate?
I'm afraid it's far to tall. Like I write I need something only a few millimeters thick, preferably less than 5, or maybe I understood that wrongly? The phone is around 8 mm tall, and a pad that high would put it dangerously close to the tip of the rubber on the holder. In 20 kmh on the Autobahn there's not much chance the phone would survive falling off (not to mention that I would never find it). And wires that I have to something mounted on the bike is no problem, I just don't want to plug in and out the charging cable of the phone all the time (espescially with the stupid lid over the port, and the annoying "remember to close the charger lid" messages I have to click away every time.
