We all know that our Z3/Z3c has a bit of a delay in between taking photos (especially compared to phones from HTC, LG, Samsung, and even Apple), but has anyone else noticed the painfully long delay between when the record button is pressed and when the video actually starts recording? I've counted nearly 3-4 seconds before my recording starts and that's just ridiculous! I've missed crucial moments because of this delay. Is there anything that can be done? Is there anyone who does NOT have this issue?
3-4 seconds? Something sounds very wrong. I'm on the latest generic UK build (23.1.A.1.28) and my video recording starts almost as soon as I touch the button. The delay is certainly less than half a second. Doesn't matter whether I'm in iA, manual or 4K mode. I'm recording to a 64GB Sandisk class 10 micro-SD card. The camera has to set up a file on the storage before it can start recording. Are you recording to internal storage or some crappy SD card?

You bring up a great point about the SD card. I currently use a fairly nice sandisk class 10 with a 32+ MB/s read/write speed. No slouch by any means, but when I switched to internal storage, the delay decreased by about half a second, but still felt laggy. I'll see if I can get some video of the delay after work today.

I use the same SD card as you but I haven't experienced that before. My delay is only about like less than a second or even less than that.

Thank you for the feedback - I think I feel better knowing that my situation isn't normal. I really don't want to factory reset my device, but I may do it to see if that helps any. Plus, I hear it will finally fix my Stamina Mode as well. I just need to find a weekend when I'm not busy to reload all of my apps and settings.

Well, I couldn't bare the thought of performing a full reset, so I just rooted the phone and reinstalled the OS over the existing data. I still get a full 3 second lag between pressing the record button and when the recording actually starts. Am I still the only one having this issue?
Just did complete wipe and re-installed 4.4.4. The delay is still there. Does Lollipop solve the problem?
Is everyone else's phone responding immediately? Is that why no one is chiming in? Does anyone with Lollipop have a delay, or does it record immediately?
Just upgraded to 5.1.1. Lollipop - the record function now loads faster than in KitKat. Shaved off about 1-2 seconds so now I won't miss out on spontaneous moments when trying to record a video.
I use open camera myself and keep all data to the internal for speed regardless of ap pictures or video.
Yeah, I tried third party apps before, but they couldn't quite match the picture quality of the stock app.

Recorded a video which seemed to go fine. Tried to play it back and got nothing but a black screen. So, tried playing a YouTube vid. Same thing, just a black screen. Tried a Watch preview, black screen. Tried a Flash video in the browser, same deal. Reboot, try again, still black. ??????????
Figured I'd be doing a factory reset, formatting the SD, who knows?
So, shutdown, pull battery, pull and re-seat the SD a couple of times, reboot. Now video plays fine again in all of the above apps.
Just an FYI.
Edit: Last night I turned off the phone and charged it overnight. Tried playing video this morning and the problem is back. Nothing but a black screen in all video playback. Going to format the SD and see if that helps.
No one else has seen this?
Update: Formatted SD yesterday morning, since then video has played perfectly.

Tried playing a vid I recorded on the phone, as well as YouTube, Watch, and flash in the browser. All just show a black screen.
Yes, with three factory fresh T-Mobile phones and SIM cards.
I can't trace it to anything in particular, but I am not letting it update itself. I am NOT an Android or HTC expert. And once it happens, the video playback is trashed until I do a factory reset.
T-Mobile tech support said this is a KNOWN issue, they have many identical complaints, and the best they can offer is to wait for FW fix.
A factory reset will fix the issue with all playback sources I have tried, but I can't tie it down to what triggers it. Rumors include Flash Player other than what is stock, YouTube app, etc., as well as an obscure sound notification checkbox in settings.
You can't just "re-choose" or "confirm" your phone as the player either - that did not work for me. T-Mobile knows its an issue, for whatever comfort that gives you.
Interestingly, it never makes the camera malfunction for snapshots.
Tough call, since HD recording is a huge selling point of this phone. I have not tried to download a video to my computer to see if it plays. I can't assume it is corrupted since it may have been playing fine all along, but I probably should check.
Also, other media players can't seem to play it either in the phone, but I am no expert their on choices.

Interesting.
I called HTC and they diagnosed it as a bad SD card. Shipping me a new one under warranty.
Called TMO and the CSR looked up known issues and this wasn't on her list. So, some conflicting info apparently from TMO.
Did a reformat of the SD and video is working for now. But then just popping the SD last night fixed it until this morning. So, we'll see.
I've ordered a 16Gb SD, and will be getting a replacement 8Gb from HTC, so will have a couple of cards to play with. I hope it's a flaky SD, since that's easily fixed.

So is "Restart" more like removing the battery? I did try a power off/on yesterday and it didn't fix the problem. Then resorted to popping the battery and SD, which did temporarily fix it. But based on a post in another thread, and the slower boot, it appears a restart is actually a more thorough reset than power off, which seems backwards. If so, good to know.
Regardless, having to reset the phone to make vids play is not acceptable. The real problem needs to be identified by HTC and fixed.

Update: Since I formatted my SD card yesterday morning video playback has worked perfectly. Will update again as needed.
Update2: Now I really have a black screen. Phone totally died this morning. Went to TMO store and swapped batteries, nothing. Door nail. Called TMO and it will be a week before I can get a replacement.

I really like the phone. Best phone available in the US for me. So, don't want to kiss it goodbye quite yet.
What I don't like is the replacement policy. TMO CSR told me all the stores are privately owned, and aren't actually part of T-Mobile. Since I purchased through Customer Care over the phone the store won't do a replacement. Ok, but they could ship me a replacement right away for a confirmed at the store dead phone, and charge my credit card full retail price if I don't return the bad one. Two hours on the phone and waiting a week for a replacement isn't a positive customer experience.
Well, something got changed with mine because none of that stuff worked for me, but now I no longer have issues with video. My rep said it was known. We did try the "Audible Selection" possibility but no help. I had to do a factory reset.
Maybe a flash issue, maybe a small FW push, I don't know.
I'm too new to Android to hack around and see, coming over from the Windows 6.5 crowd.
We'll see, but I think at going on 3 weeks if it was going to fail it would by now.
Hello there,
I would like to know if some other users are having issues with tha pictures and video apps and what solutions if any. I received my nre Z3 and from the very first time I started tu use it I'm having serious issues. The issue is that everytime I turn on the phone's camera the phone turns very hot, it also constantly freezes out and the camera app crashes. It happens for pictures and for videos. I already own a Xperia Z1 device and know how to use the camera and settings and knoe that this is not normal. I tested the camera with the lower screen brightness possible and also with and external SD card with the same results. For worsen the situation, after being taking family pictures for the last 2 days, the pictures and videos started to become not accesible nor visibles. At the moment when the pictures were taken they were visible, but after a while, some of them can't be opened anymore. This firstly happened during the afternoon for some pictures taken during the morning, then later, 3 more. It has continued damaging pictures. Right now the device has did the same to 20 pictures and videos from nearly 50 taken. I rebooted the phone, restarted and also reset the phone and it is still showing the same bahavior. This phone has not been rooted and has been kept as it was when received. I never had these issues before with other phones. It is a D6603, running Kernel version 3.4.0-perf-g0961 cdf, build 23.0.A.2.93. Any fixes or suggestions? Is it real that this unit comes with factory unlocked bootloader? Could it be a software issue regardless hardware?
A couple of things in there immediately hinted me about your SD card, I mean not all your issues seems to be that but about the videos and photos been there and then don't is a symptom of a bad sd card.
Just to see what happens put another card, if you don't have it, just remove it and save everything to your internal storage and try a couple of videos and pictures again to see what happens and let us know.
I highly doubt it comes with an unlocked bootloader, but this does sound like a bad SD card. You could also try using a different camera app, although personally I don't think that will help much.

I tested with and without the use of an external sd card and I'm having the same issues. At least using the phone's internal memory I haven't lost any more pictures for now. I'll test during the day, but the phone's still getting very very hot and the camera freezes and app crashes.

That's exactly what I thought, and the reason I wanted to split your issues in 2, it's easy to relate one to the other and confused about it, but now that you know that are 2 separate things it's easier for you to approach it.
First, your SD card may be one of the thousands of fake 32 or 64 GB generic cards around (and even "Branded" ones, China is getting better by day on that department), they behave just like that, I just got another one of these last week, so don't waste any more time on it, it won't never pass from about 4GB of maximum storage, even when in your computer or phone it shows as a 32/64GB card it will allow storage for up to 4GB and then simply begins giving you all those issues.
About your phone getting warmer or hot while in the Camera App, this is an old issue with Sony Devices, it's more common on hot places like for us down here in the Caribbean, the first day I tried my D6633 it did that, I tried it a couple of times and the same, don't ask me how, but it got better, a lot better, to the point that hasn't happened to me again, only thing I did, as far as I can remember was using the Manual modes, and disabling the AR Effects and Fun Apps, the same 2 that while using them was the first time my phone got hot.
YMMV but it worth a try, obviously if you live in a hot weather place, using the 4k video feature will bring you the warning and it's normal that it will get warmer than when using regular features, but other than that, for me, not even a single occurrence after I disabled the AR stuff.
Using that setting to record video causes lag in app and sometimes crashes. The image on screen lags, is behind the hand movement during recording. The autofocus is very slow and at times just not working. When I press the stop button lags about 2 seconds before stopping.
Normal 1080p, qhd and uhd are OK, didn't try the lower ones.
I changed between SD card and device storage, same issue.
I cleaned the data and cache for the app, same issue.
Wiped the cache partition, same issue.
Only thing that remains to try is a factory reset.
I have an 32gb exynos s7, with Sony front camera. Made in Vietnam.
Anyone else has this problem ? Is this a known bug ?

also, yeah, i've noticed VERY slow focusing on certain video modes including this one. so this isnt a processor issue for once, it's just a samsung issue lol
Thanks for the input. I'm trying to find out if it's a bug for all or just a few bad devices. Until now I know we are 4 with this issue. I'm afraid to go again to all the stores in my area to check the on display units, they probably think I'm up to something

I've noticed the focus issue on mine with the latest update. I've also noticed in the settings Tracking AF is not used on FHD 60 and up. (snapdragon, VZW)
Samsung response to focus problems of the S7 video in 60fps
I've asked Samsung (NL) for a response. First they've told me they will look into it, because the problem should not have been present on all devices.
Later they've added it's a hardware issue and can not be solved by a software update. So no solution: S7 has crappy 60 fps video so live with it.
Very dissapointing. 60fps is one of the features I've needed for recording. A big let down from Samsung.
Same issue anyone?
Laggy in what way? The UI, camera interface or shutter speed?
The phone is junk.
Half baked software on the camera, plenty of hardware issues. Instead of releasing 5 phone a year Sony should stick to 1/2 and refine the software/hardware.
Its 2017 and the camera software and output is now basically behind that on the iPhone 6. Hell my Z3 compact takes better pictures.
I'm sorry you feel that way... Go back to iPhone! This is the best handset from Sony in sometime now and none of the problems you mentioned have been highlighted. You must be having a localized issue so stop thrashing categorically as it's isolated to you. Constructive criticism goes much further than complaints

I guess you refer to the camera speed when shutter key is pressed half-way (autofocus locked in). This is "normal", it's because the predictive capture is on, the camera is taking a lot of pictures, it happens in auto mode. Try to switch to manual mode and see if the problem still occurs.

I never really had any problems with the camera or the phone itself.
You're bound to find a lot of posts regarding issues with ANY phone, because more people are likely to post a complaint rather than praises.
Regardless, all phones have issues. If you don't like it, simply sell/return it and move along. No need to be salty.
Anyone here returning their pixel 3?
after a couple weeks with the phone i actually might...
issues ive encountered.
app redraws are rediculous
if you have apps in the background suddenly i find myself waiting for applications to open again, and i mean longer than i would normally if i first launch the app (ive formatted /data, and even ran the flash-all script incase something was wrong, this is actually my second pixel 3 xl)
notifications not appearing or taking forever even with all battery saving features off.
4GB ram is really showing itself here.
previously having the oneplus 6-8GB ram - coming to the pixel 3 performance is horrible
im considering returning the pixel 3xl and getting a oneplus 6T

Thanks for your observations. I have both P3XL and OP6T. I have been alternating between the two for awhile now. I do not want to provide a full comparison here, but I have found myself using the P3XL much more than the OP6T. Main reason is that P3XL does everything perfectly. From touch to apps to camera.

4GB ram is really showing itself here.
previously having the oneplus 6-8GB ram - coming to the pixel 3 performance is horrible
im considering returning the pixel 3xl and getting a oneplus 6T

The app redraw issue is a memory problem that is going to be fixed in an update, it has nothing to do with the available RAM. 4gb of RAM is fine, I'm only averaging 2.5gb on a daily basis and after rooting then installing a different kernel apps stay open in the background.
I am returning for the following reasons.
Pixel stand charges and phone over heats and will kill the device eventually.
Also camera bug on normal back camera. Zoom in all the way and photo starts to jump around like you are shaking the lens. Which is untrue as it was sitting against a stand and still did this. They have not issued a bug report because device is in for rma.
We will see what happens when new device comes in. Yes I have video of the camera bug. But I don't think xda would allow what's in the video. (not porn) lol

i see the camera thing on my phone too... i would think google would say this is a feature that lets the image move so additional pixels get taken... which they said is how they get the extra pixels for the zoom. the way i tested it was zooming all the way in on a door knob from 4-5 feet away. the image will sway in a circular motion.. i wouldn't call it a shake, its very gentle.
are we allowed to return after 14 days?

According to this article the image movement when zoomed is by design. It's emulating hand movement to allow the AI to get better resolution than the lens can optically support.

is there a PR about the issue?
because 4G + ZRAM should be plenty in theory but its not the case here.

It's an issue with adaptive battery. Turn adaptive battery off whether entirely or for your apps you want to keep open in the bg and you won't see redraws anymore

Google has issued a statement that a fix for RAM management issues will be released soon. You can Google it.
