[Q] Proscan PLT8015-K C/W ICS4.0.1 root possible?, AND Vipre found virus in rom... - General Questions and Answers

For starts: Mods (tia, but these suggestions aren't quite the same... ) I did do an internal / external search to no avail. The search queries were:
Proscan PLT8015-K (etc., as above,) virus.
Proscan PLT8015-K (PLT8015K, PLT8015, 8015, and other variants,) Root.
The unit in question is my daughters Graduation gift, to which I had to setup. As always, I have a good habit to install Vipre Mobile on any android devices we have, and so... Vipre detected a threat (Trojan.generic.androidOS) in the app "app stores." Tried to uninstall it, and the option isn't there... I stopped it, and disabled it. Vipre asked if it should be uninstalled, and gave me the option to uninstall it, but it is always unsuccessful.
Proscan PLT8015K Specs:
http://www.proscanvideo.com/item.asp?itemnmbr=PLT8015-K
Found some firmware there too...:fingers-crossed:
So I'm told by a semi-reliable source (CPR Edmonton) and a friend (reliable) that Google won't allow their app store to be installed on these Proscans for some friggin reason or another (citation required.)
Why, everything else Google is on there...
So question 1: Since I'm concerned for my daughters security AND safety, The only way to remove this "app stores" crap, is to have su privy on this 'droid, right?
and obviously, question 2: Has anybody considered rooting this bad boy, or should I consider starting this one.
Question 3: I suppose those dingleballs over at CIL have patched the vulnerability we found in earlier models?(btw it's 4:20 here, not 1:20... jk. again, gotta love their tech support:

Hi....I installed some apps from my G1 also. But the ones that depend on the market for update or rely on web interaction either won't install, force close or don't work quite right.
Man I sure hope that someone might tackle rooting this device soon. I think it has so much potential for being a useful device.
Rooting the Cruz Micro
Via tether its already rooted. Just adb shelled in and su works fine. So no rooting necessary as I understand it. However I am not a firmware guy so just my experience.
I did notice when I used Cruz Marketplace I got the option for Android Marketplace which has thousands of apps - not sure its Google's but worked well. One item to note is that the CPU in these is not an ARM but MIP's. It hasn't been a problem for me (if I am desperate I will just use a cross compiler to build something) but I have heard it caused issues on other forums for people.

Processor Information/Docs
I was in with ADB playing and got this from cat'ing procinfo.
system type : JZ4760
Hardware : PT701
processor : 0
cpu model : Ingenic Xburst V4.15 FPU V0.0
BogoMIPS : 527.56
wait instruction : yes
microsecond timers : no
tlb_entries : 32
extra interrupt vector : yes
hardware watchpoint : yes, count: 1, address/irw mask: [0x0fff]
ASEs implemented : mxu
shadow register sets : 1
core : 0
VCED exceptions : not available
VCEI exceptions : not available
Googling Igenic will find their site for you. Notice the XBurst in the name. They have a lot of PDF's and information on their FTP site which the website links too. Unfortunately they have great detailed PDF's on the JZ4755 but nothing on the JZ4760. Had me wondering if they took a previous design and just customized a bit for the client.
I do realize of course that a LOT can change in even a small revision of a chip. Anyway - for the 4755 they have cross build tools, linux demos, board designs, nand and usbboot instructions etc.. Even the tool chains to build for the mip's.
Man this is the best XMas present my wife has got me in years
Is there a hack to install Android Market on this Cruz Tablet? Thanks.
Android App Store App
The Cruz Marketplace (cruzmarket_com/mkt/mhome.asp) currently has a app listed 5th from the top as I am viewing it now called:
AndAppStore - Android Market Place App
FREE
This is how I installed mine, and it works like a charm.

(sorry for incomplete URL but am noob and can't post URL's)
I would love to find out if there is a way to port any of the existing ROMs to this device. The touchscreen is not responsive enough with the current firmware, but the keyboard is- that tells me there is the ability to increase responsiveness... other than that, the ability to run auto task killers would help because it looks like most apps stay resident and slow the device down considerably. Two problems that can be fixed by tweaking the firmware I believe- any developers out there with the desire to take this on?
You may want to check what's going on at slatedorid's forum. Google slate droid velocity cruz... cannot post the link
I have one as well.
I really like the device even though other tablets are offering better features in low-end tablets. I checked Best Buy today and it was $169. I got it for $199 last week before CES. I have the 7 inch T10(x) series. The capacitive display is ok for me, its like getting to know a new friend. Lack of security, Android Market, and built in obsolescence of the OS are bummers.
Worst - a smart device that keeps all your stuff but doesn't even have simple password/PIN protection. Doh!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that app does NOT give you access to the true Android Marketplace. The Android Marketplace is a Google hosted site, and it has thousands of apps. The Android App Store has less than 2k apps, definitely missing some big important ones, like the Pandora app for Android.
There ARE hacks to get the Android Market for the Reader, but so far I've not found a hack for the Tablet (and yes, there IS a difference).
Good luck to the OP. If anyone comes across a hack for the Tablet, I would love to know.

ugh
I got the T408, i have tried twice to install market and failed both times. I am one-click-rooted as it has the 2.3 Gingerbread... easy enough... now i just cant get half the apps i want from Amazon, or Applanet.
Google Market on Cruz Velocity T410
OK so my son got the T410 for christmas, I've got it rooted and am working on a push for the google market and frameworks. Should have it pretty soon. I'll post it as soon as I do.
UPDATE:
I will go through this quickly as it was actually pretty easy. This is how I did it, I had no problems so I would not anticipate any, however standard disclaimer, I can't be held responsible for anything you do to your device, I am simply sharing my experience. What you choose to do is up to you. I didi this on the T410, but I would expect it to work the same on the T408
1. Rooted with gingerbreak and installed superuser and busybox over it (search for it)
2. Placed the app folder (found inside the gapps.zip attached to this post) on my internal sd card.
3. Installed the apps in this order:
I DID NOT OPEN ANY OF THESE APPS AFTER INSTALLATION, ONLY CHOOSE DONE AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE.
onetimeinitializer.apk
setup.apk
googleservicesframework.apk
gmail.apk
maps.apk
talk.apk
vending.apk
AFTER THE LAST ONE IS INSTALLED, I REBOOTED MY TABLET.
Upon reboot I let the tablet fully cycle the sd card checks and all that, once I swiped to unlock the home screen, I was met with a decision asking whether to use Launcher, of Setup Wizard to complete the action.
CHECK THE BOX TO USE ACTION AS DEFAULT AND CHOOSE LAUNCHER
4. I then opened the google market, signed in with my gmail account and once it had synced my device with the google servers (yes WIFI must be on and connected, I had to say it because you just never know) I had access to the market.
I have downloaded a few apps and have had no problems, it is an older version of the market and I don't have market updater installed, but I may try that later.
I have also noticed when looking in the account and sync area, it will sync my gmail, but not my contacts or calender, I will have to look at that later as well.
Hope this helps

Was Able to root my wife's T408 as well with gingerbreak and have market 3.3.4 running on it now.
First I installed apps in the order you did had done. The version of Market is dated for sure but I was able to update to 2.2.6 via the stock OI File Explorer. Anything later then that seemed to crash. I then used SU & File Explorer to r/w the /system/apps/ folder , moved the newer 3.3.4 Market APK there and installed from that location along with a system reboot. Once rebooted the new market showed up right away. Only issue is some apps list as not compatible with device but having my wife use her Sidekick 4g to download and back up the app and email it to her tablet Netflix , Firefox , and many others ran with no issue even with Market saying not compatible.

I have noticed that as well. Seems like since the Market added the ability for apps to be device specific that alot of apps don't show up for devices that aren't supported. I am playing a little with the build.prop file and when I get it correct I will let you know. Even root explorer would not show up in the market, but I purchased it from amazon and Im using it to drop apps into place.
Android Market - I used the JGM ROM, rooted with z4root, and had blank Market. Accessing market via laptop showed my Cruz listed, but no serial number. Gave up, but then by luck a week later, I went to the Market on my laptop, found an App and selected my Cruz as the device to download it to. 2 hours later, sure enough the Market was working, and that select app downloaded.
It almost seems like you have to prime the market first for the Cruz via a computer...

Altek A14 Leo section?

Hey
The first (Android) smartphone with camera that can really compete with the digital cameras and no section for it?
Modding it would be great
Altek A14 Leo
Altek Leo Section
regarding the serious problems the Altek Leo has, as no google apps, not even market, no rooting published, no adobe flash, firefox will not install and so on,
a section would be useful for the distessed owners of this camera phone which
is more a fumble phone than a smart phone. Its advantages are a very good lens, an outstanding CCD chip, a xenon flash and professional camera software.
True, is buggy
I bought one actually and despite it being pretty buggy, I just absolutely love the camera.
Definitely needs some software love though:
1) Interface is pretty sluggish and 2.1 isn't helping, the latest android performance improvements would be nice.
2) Touch-screen is strangely inaccurate. Swype was a must for me.
3) Battery life is pretty bad (not certain how much a newer Android would help, but any amount of powersaving fixes would help).
4) Buttons/widgets to lock the screen (e.g. Extended Controls) don't work.
5) The camera button doesn't open the camera when the phone is locked (debatable I guess, but imo, the camera button should just open the camera, period).
6) Default alarm clock doesn't ring randomly.
7) Not to mention apps randomly crashing, strange animation bugs in the Album viewer, no google apps, terrible GPS, etc.
But despite those, I've managed to work my way round them and am in love with it.
Alex
I have one of these and I do like the quirkyness .
I would love to improve the experience by modding.
Quirkyness fits well
To continue the list (more than enough for a forum)
- Backups by Titanium, AVG or Nandroid do not work because i have no idea
how to root the Altek Leo.
- WLAN range is still very short and does not always an automatic reconnect.
- I could not manage to make any browser play flash files, but the moboplayer
plays flv files well.
- Apps like soundhound say the microphone is blocked.
About half of the apps i need are not available because they will not install
or they are exclusively available over google market and getting them from
file hosters seems a bit risky to me. Most of this problems seem to be caused
by the small software space of 120 MB for files and 83 MB for running
applications.
But i will keep the Altek Leo and use it because the camera prooved itself
as outstanding among mobile phones.
- I use the application stores Applanet, Amazone Appstore, Handango,
SlideMe SAM and the tools Memory Booster Lite, Android Tweak.
Does anyone discovered any other useful helpers for this half of an
ANDROID device ?
"We do not need any adobe flash, we have got a real xenon flash."
Where To Buy
Does anyone know where to pick up/order one of these units?
Here To Buy
Search at Ebay, you will need a Paypal account.
I bought mine from Wifigadget.
Eason of Yupitek provides International Customer Service,
have a look at the facebook pinwall.
Thanks for the tips! Really like Memory Booster and Swype.
If you're on a mac, the "missing sync" from markspace is well worth the buy - particularly given that there does not seem to be a way to add a Google account under accounts and sync - it's missing on my altek leo! Anyone elses too?
Also recommend "Lookout" if you're worried about virus from no easy way to get apks other than file sharing sites.
Despite the quirks, very happy with this all-in-one device - music player + phone + camera - 3 down to 1! Fantastic!
Vignette
Sidenote, 'Vignette' is the perfect app for this device.
It doesn't fix any of the quirkiness, but it's a photo manipulation tool which complements the fantastic camera perfectly.
You can take your pics and then touch them up making the phone a studio for all things photography.
You can purchase it from the AndAppStore.
By poor battery life, how many days do you get out of it?
root and market
Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak exploit? I heard it might work on older devices. Also, if you don't trust file sharing sites and want stuff from the market. You could try running an emulator and installing the Market on that, then sideloading the APKs. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it seems there are a lot of people doing this. Here's one HOWTO which is specific to Mac but I think it's prety much the same or at least you should be able to use the same system image. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1387830/how-to-install-android-market-app-on-the-emulator there are lots of other links if you google "android market emulator" I don't have the Leo yet because they're sold out in Taiwan, but I've got mine on order. I'm most interested whether the google apps work at all if they're sideloaded. I've just sort of bricked my older Cyanogen device. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Oh, here's a Windows specific link - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/10004/accessing-android-market-from-android-sdk/
and be careful with Gingerbreak!
There's also UniversalAndRoot to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
and SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Poor battery-life
@rocky7st
It depends on usage. Light usage is ok. Any sort of medium/heavy usage won't get you through the day.
I bought it from an ebay seller which sent me 2 batteries which was helpful:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230614421067
It's is useful since it allows me to occasionally geek out with the camera, playing with apps or using the GPS (i.e. 2 hours straight) and and it'll completely run out of juice by late afternoon.
I usually wait till I get home to recharge it on those occasions, but it's been very useful to be able to switch to the backup battery if I'm out and about and I really need to use the phone.
@everyone_else
On the topic of side-loading apps, my gf has an Android phone with a market on it, so I use the "Astro" file manager which allows you to "Backup" the apks, and then I transfer them to my phone via email.
I've been unable to get my device to show up with adb, so not far enough to try SuperOneClick.
UniversalAndRoot says something like "unable to root"
Z4Root says "running root exploit" and does not progress..
That's bad news but good to know at the same time. Hopefully there will be a method soon. Still waiting on mine but I unbricked my older one. Seems to be an almost total lack of hands-on reviews (outside of a trade show) so I thought someone might be interested in this one. Also, I emailed the author to see whether and how he installed the Market app.
http://120x160.com/old-entries/216-hardware-review-altek-leo-a14-camera-phone
Cheers for the reply jackflap. Do you guys know anything about the Android 2.2 upgrade, I've heard Altek is meant to be releasing it next month.
Okay, I got SuperOneClick working so I have root. ADB worked in windows after installing the Altek software.
ADB in linux still cannot find the phone..
So I tried installing various vending.apk files but keep getting MISSING SHARED LIBRARY or out of date SDK.
@daktak I've been trying to develop for the Leo but have not been able to get ADB to work in windows. Where did you obtain the Altek software?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob here and non technical.
Recently bought an altek leo with the sole purpose of loading an app called Passport Photo Plus and using the device to create passport photopgraphs and to send by Bluetooth to a compatible printer.
We have been doing this on other android smartphones but wanted to use the altek due to its camera features.
It appears that our desired app is ony avaiable on Market.
Being non -technical we have tried and failed to find a way to install this app on our leo.
I'm sure there may be other apps available but we specifically want this one due to it's features.
Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so how? Can anybody point me in the right direction (in easy to understand non tech terms please!)
Would happily pay a small fee for succesful step by step instructions (not sure if I can post that here, if not please ignore / mods pls delete).
Many thanks in advance.

Hipstreet TITAN HS-7DTB4-4GB Tablet - Proper Rooting, Market etc.

Hi all,
I picked up a cute little tablet for my young kids to use on trips in the car from my local Walmart called the Hipstreet Titan HS-7DTB4-4GB. After poking around the OS, i found out it was rooted but not properly and you couldn't even run the android market on it to unlock its' true potential. Since I found out that only branded (Samsung, Sony Acer etc) Android tablets have access to the marketplace, i got verrrrry curious as to how far i could push this little piece of technology to...
After some exhaustive searching on the 'Net, this is what i have come up with:
SPECS:
7" Capacitive touch screen @ 800x480
Android 4.0.4 OS
4GB built in capacity - expandable to 32 GB with Micro SD card (not included)
1.2 GHZ CPU single core A8 Cortex CPU
512 MB DDR2 RAM
Rechargable 2600 mah lithium polymer battery built-in
High speed direct micro USB 2.0 interface
WIFI 802.11 b/g/n
Built in speaker
Built-in front facing 300k camera
Multiple language format
After downloading Tasselhof's Root, Market utility HERE i was fully rooted and ready to go.
****UPDATE 08/26/2012*****
PROGRESS!!! After rooting and running the market fix with the above utility, i rebooted the unit and ran the android market which i then was able to download and install an app successfully WITHOUT A FC!!!
This problem is a major headache for tablet owners who have a partial root. Try to get an app to install from the market/play store and you would end up with an FC every time!! Not anymore!!!
I will add to this as i find out more... stay tuned and feel free to update me via PM if you find out more than i have here!

i'm a little confused, you are manually installing su, superuser.apk and busybox only. no rooting taking place or market fixes...
Open a ADB shell and you should see a '#' If you don't, you're screwed. if you do, just type these commands!

this doesn't invoke a sense of confidence my friend.... the utility i link to in my post actually roots the unit completely, and fixes the market issue 100% so we can help those whom you term as "screwed" not be "screwed". right?

Actually my method gives you root but I'm revising it for safety reasons as I managed to brick my tab and get a new one
The manual install still works its not meant to do google market
The below rant requests a pardon from the MOD.. being a senior member i am flabbergasted at some members that just walk in and start cross-posting and making a mess of things in the OP.
Now for the rant:

I am now further confused... your method DOES NOT invoke root status at all!! You are simply installing the binaries!!! you even plainly state this:
Open a ADB shell and you should see a '#' If you don't, you're screwed. if you do, just type these commands!
Click to collapse
you DO NOT get root by simply installing the SU and superuser.apk binaries! if the user does not get a root prompt from the get-go, you leave the user hanging with "YOU'RE SCREWED" and that is the end of it! you are making an assumption that the unit has root access and just doing what others have posted by installing the binaries, not actually rooting or fixing the market issues as i have stated in my OP.
my linked utility from Tasselhof invokes/repairs root onto the HIPSTREET unit since up until now this tablet has had little exposure on XDA and has not been able to be rooted or have any utilities for it. I posted the utility because i have (after exhaustive experimentation and recoveries) found a utility that WORKS with this model.
We are here to HELP people out of these situations, you are just making it worse!! You aren't even breaking ground, you're burying users in false information!!

Hey repherb, how is the tablet? I have a Pandigital Novel but oh boy is it a piece of sh*t. it is so slow, the screen has to be pressed very hard to get it to move and the Wi-Fi, works, but only about 25% of the time.
I installed kewlguy's ROM he made and I have the App Store and more features, but the Wi-Fi still sucks.
I was wondering if the Hipstreet Titan is any good. Google Play isn't that important as I can apps off of Appbrain, of get them off my S3.
How is the screen for sensitivity? Does the Wi-Fi work well? My father goes to Dialysis 3 times a week (4 hours each time) and I want to give him the tablet so he can play his online checkers and freecell while he is there. Does it have Flash?
Many thanks for the info,
Ian

The 4GB Titan tablet from Hipstreet works very well with the stock ICS ROM, as long as you run Tasselhof's full root. once that is done the OS really opens up. The 4GB on board allows for me to store some movies and music for the kids without the need for a microSD card.
The screen is multipoint-touch so the kids enjoy it for google earth etc. and responds to light touches. the kids do not need to be forceful.
The WiFi is good, rarely losing signal outside the house on the front lawn at about 40 feet from the router through the house structure to outside.
Flash can be installed on this unit, best to do it once you fully root from the utility. My 8-year old daughter plays online barbie and nick jr. games on the websites without a problem.
Hope this helps!

Hey, I used this and it worked great, with one exception... I didn't back anything up, and let the tool replace the build.prop file, now things are very very broken. Does anyone have an original build.prop that they backed up? Or failing that, a known working one that I could try?

Will it work for Hipstreet Nova 4?
Hi repherb,
Thanks for this great info.
And I have question:
I'm getting Hip street Nova 4, that is basically Titan but with HDMI port. Do you think this method of rooting would work?
I'm not guru, rather advanced user so would really appreciate some help.
Thanks!

Hi all,
I picked up a cute little tablet for my young kids to use on trips in the car from my local Walmart called the Hipstreet Titan HS-7DTB4-4GB.
I will add to this as i find out more... stay tuned and feel free to update me via PM if you find out more than i have here!

request Step by Step instructions
Hello. If it possible can somebody put a step by step Rooting and Enablenig Google Play market useing Tasselhof script. The instructions there are for another tablet and my understanding that some steps are not needed or even be harmfull for Titan tablet.I've used Newtech utility for one of my Titan tablets, and it worked with the exception of Calendar synch issues and i think it's really reduced camera resolution/quality. I just got another Titan tablet and would like to tryTasSelhof script. Thank you in advance.
Also can somebody post alink to an original /clean Hipstreet Titan firmware/image backup?Just incase somehting goes wrong. I couldn't find information on how to create full system back up.
Thank you!!!!

Works on Hipstreet Flare 9DTB4-8GB 9" Tablet however I think I messed myself up. Took 1 extra step too much.
I managed to root, but now I have lost my bottom taskbar, and thus the ability to see multi task, back, volume up and down.
On Boot up I get "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped"
I made the huge mistake and backed up nothing from the start, so apart from my major sin, how can I get my task bar back?
Need a clear step by step as this is my first android.
Oh I can still surf, view app store... but since the task bar went I can't install from the store ( error ), but I can with an apk download from web.
Any advice would be welcome.

[Q] New Big Lots Uniden UTAB71 questions

They are pretty crappy. A8, 512MB, 4GB, but only $59 on sale right now. I was able to side load Yahoo Messenger & Plugin, and Titanium backup. Does this mean it's already unlocked? Oh, and it came with Google Play installed. They take a 32GB SDHC just fine, but no HDMI. I also bought a FUBU Nabi awesome sauce thing for my kids. Can I backup the kids apps on the Nabi with Titanium to ext SD, then just restore them to the Uniden? My main question is, Is this thing already unlocked? Sorry for the Noobness. I learned to root the Nabi and sideload stuff in a couple hours on the Nabi, but still a noob..

BUMP
Sorry if it was wrong to bump, I believe it said it was okay to do so once every 24 hours.
I have the same device and I'm curious, I tried the z4root app, and I got no results. I installed superuser and nothing happened, or nothing seemed to happen, that would be awesome if it was already unlocked!
NOTE: When I opened the z4root app, it never said root/unroot, it looked like it said re-root/unroot, ao I'm guessing it might already be unlocked, but I'm having the hardest time finding out.
Does anyone happen to know?
Uniden UTAB71
My UTAB71 didn't come with Google Play store preloaded, and there wasn't an option to obtain it from the list of approved app stores you could download by clicking the 'Download App Stores' icon on the default launcher. I also tried installing it from the APK I downloaded from Android Police (w w w dot androidpolice.com/2012/11/02/download-latest-google-play-store-3-9-17/) to no avail.
I had previously purchased a 7" D2 pad from Big Lots and used a package I found on AndroidTablets.net (w w w dot androidtablets.net/forum/allwinner-a10-based/47980-can-anyone-help-me-2.html) to put Google play store on it, and this package also worked for the UTAB71. Look at the first post on the page (it's by user Erron and a link to his skydrive includes the necessary files).
This tablet is already rooted.
I haven't been able to find anything online concerning this tablet...not even from Uniden's or SouthernTeleCom's websites. I will use this thread for the time being for any updates I come across while toying with this device.
So far, I'm pretty satisfied...if I can have GO launcher and video chat via skype for $60, that's a win in my book. The tablet is relatively quick for only having a 1Ghz processor and 512MB ram. I haven't noticed any lag yet and seems as fast as the 1.2Ghz 1GB ram D2 pad I had purchased before.
EDIT1: I found the hidden support section for Uniden on Southern Telecom's website:
southerntelecom.com/unidentabletsupport/ although it doesn't have any info pertaining to the UTAB71...just a device called the UTAB430. I expect this is where we will find firmware updates, etc in the future.
I'm not sure what rooted means anymore. I know what root is on Linux, but... This let me install ES Explorer from exsd. I put 10GB of kids avi/mp4 videos on it and it plays them all fine. I guess if I can install anything I want from exsd I don't care if it's rooted. It is fast enough. It has a nice screen when playing hi-rez animated movies.
- Joe
I'm glad to hear that it is already rooted.
This makes me confused as to why superuser and other rooted apps would not properly operate. They got errors when trying to request superuser root permissions or something, i couldn't get error codes, just crashes...
I like it, its pretty quick, I however am trying to overclock it and so far no success.
Nothing drastic, just bumping it up to maybe 1.2 GHz at most.
Enough to stop the minor lags I encounter once in a blue moon...
Maybe Bumping the SD speed as well...
Its a nifty tablet, Very helpful in college. Since I got it, I don't have to lug around my ASUS 17" gaming laptop with all its mods, OC, and power chord anymore. Takes a load off my back. lol
Sorry if it looks like I'm hijacking this, I'm not. This thread seems relevant. And I'm thinking the OP might need this info as well, might come in handy for him in the future, idk...

Refer to my post #3. The method I used for putting gapps on mine is listed. Download the files from that guy's skydrive, run the runme.bat in the root/recover folder. Make sure to read the readme for specifics, but it worked fine for me.

I got one today and it's pretty decent. Anyone find out anything new?
Thanks for those instructions, I was able to get Play Store loaded on.
btw, out of the box the kernel allows for OC'ing.. I used ROM Toolbox Pro to OC to 1.2ghz. Anything higher made the tablet lock up, but ymmv.
The tablet is surpisingly quite responsive @1.2 ghz with Apex Launcher.
not to sound too nooby, but is there a way to connect this to a monitor?
I'm getting one of these, I will be experimenting with it alot, getting what I like to work =P
I was able to install Anroid Market / Google Play just fine using article on the-digital-reader.com
So far this is working fine for my uses, using Sign my Pad, to sign PDF work orders, and keep pdf service manuals at hand, testing wifi signals etc

A friend of mine just got one of these, and I put the Google Market on it, but it did not update to Play for some reason. Anyway, he had not set up any passwords on it, but after it went into sleep mode on him this morning, it came back wanting a password to access it. Well since he had never set it up, the password was unknown. He brought it to me this afternoon, because I hack a lot on Android devices. I was not able to get it to reset using the hard button on the side. It still always booted wanting a login password.
I tried getting it into recovery, but was never able to. There are only 2 buttons on the device, power and home. Does anybody have any idea how to get this tablet into recovery mode?
thx,

Did you guys try 0000 or 1234? I'd also suggest calling the company
I don't know how to get it into recovery.
I've been searching myself.
I however found a way to confirm this device is rooted. There is am app called "Root Checker"
In any app store, download that app, it should be free.
Anyways, I clicked to confirm if it was rooted, and it says it is already rooted.
Under my kernel version it says [email protected] #56 or something like that, so I'm assuming it was rooted and something to do with ubuntu...
Anyways, I've installed a terminal IDE app, and typed SU, shows # which I believe also means rooted.
--------------------------
Now that it is rooted, I've forgotten all my great ideas for changes and things to do that only rooted phones can do. Kinda sad. lol
But I will start looking for manual overclocking modification methods.
As I have not yet found any overclocking applications that support this devices hardware...
I like it a lot, runs flawlessly, and smooth, except for the ocassional lag on the internet browser, I'm thinking a small 0.1-0.2 GHz bump will do the trick.

SetCPU does seem to increase the CPU frequency, but I don't think the voltage changed at all, so... I will be working on what I can with my device, I will post if I find anything useful as far as anything goes.
Maybe with luck, this device will run windows 8 for ARM! I can only try.

Are you using the stock built in pre-loaded email app?
I couldn't say, I havent used it yet.
I do believe the device has the ability to copy and paste text, and that it also has a contacts list feature that you can edit the emails into.
However I don't know if they work together...
I use the gMail app. It and my gMail account seem to remember email addresses...
---------------------------------------------
I have been using SetCPU app from my phone in my android tablet, so far it has beem working fine.
The stock CPU speed is 1.001 GHz on this tablet.
So far I am running overclocked 1.2 GHz and it has been stable all day. Battery life seems to be the same.
It does get somewhat warm on the back of the device by the power button, but nothing drastic or alarming.
Remember: Overclocking is your choice and your actions alone, it can be fatal to the device if done incorrectly.
If anyone finds anything about these devices, I hope it gets posted here.
Maybe if we are lucky enough, because enough of us have these tablets, we will get our own device category and general forum for info and questions...
I forgot what else I was going to say... Other than I might look into the 4.1 Android updates and whatever comes next for android, and I will see if I can backup my current device files, OS, Kernal, etc and upgrade it.
But for now, I'm starting slow and working on finding more info. Anyone else getting any progress?

NOTE: Sorry this thread got hijacked into this. It sort-of because the Uniden tablet Know-it-all and what not spot of questions and answers.
I will stop if the OP and/or others decide it is nessisary.
If thats the case, I'd stop and then make a dedicated thread to this device and link this thread and my other question thread to that thread as "Relevant info"...

POLAROID A8 8" Tablet FULL ROOT

Hey everyone! I thought I'd get this out here.
I just recently picked up this POLAROID A8 8" Tablet from walgreens $94.15 out the door.
Just to let everyone know It came with root access, I got it home started toying around with it popped in a SD card that I had SuperSU and Root Explorer on, allow unknown sources was already checked so I used the native file manager and tried to install SuperSU, it installed, I opened it up, it asked to update the binary, I said ok, it said success, so I went back and installed Root Explorer opened it, it asked for Superuser permissions I said yes and Voila!:victory: FULL ROOT.
I then called southerntelecom to ask about the firmware update to support google play and what not; if it would revoke Super User permissions like most firmware updates do. I could tell that they didn't really want to give me a straight answer, was told they couldn't answer, that they weren't sure if it would or not, (how could they not know? ) I was even put on hold a couple of times, I was eventually told that someone in tech support was going to install the update on one of the tablets they had there and they would call me back and have an answer for me. That was on a Friday, and believe it or not, Monday afternoon they called me back But they still really didn't have an answer for me, said that tech support didn't get a chance to do an install to check .
But anyhoo what I WAS able to find out, was that, supposedly, every thing needed to support google was already installed, just missing the google APK's because of licensing, kinda like CM. So time to do some investigating. I took a jelly bean gapps package (I think it was for 4.2.3 cause google ears was in it) and started comparing; and what I found was it did seam to have all the needed underlaying google framework support files except for com.google.android.media.effects.jar, Facelock.apk, Phonesky.apk/aka playstore, and of course the regular google apps that you can download from the playstore. I of course had everything extracted out of the gapps.zip file and I just dropped them into their respective places and folders, set permissions and ownership, deleted dalvic cache and cache and rebooted and waited..........aaaannndddddddd BAM! :highfive::victory:
I now have an 8" tablet with full Root SuperUser capabilities, 1ghz dualcore processer (overclocked with set cpu,) 1GB/DDR3 ram, Dual cameras, WI-FI,(look's like it also has support for a 3g dongle), Bluetooth, HDMI out and fully supports google play store and whatnot.
I cant complain, pretty pleased with it actually, it's fast, and seems to have decent battery life and I also now have init.d support on it. There's a few more tweaks I would like to do to it yet like expanding the 4gb internal storage with the 32gb external SD card; ideally I would like to seamlessly merge the two so the tablet would see just one 36gb storage place for all apps and whatnot but I think I'm hoping for too much on that one:silly:
So if anyone has any input that I might be able to accomplish that please let me know, or if anyone has any questions feel free to ask I'll or someone will try to get them answerd for you.
I'll also try and get some screenshots for you showing some benchmark scores.
Hope this has helped you out in some way
