[Q] New Big Lots Uniden UTAB71 questions - General Questions and Answers

They are pretty crappy. A8, 512MB, 4GB, but only $59 on sale right now. I was able to side load Yahoo Messenger & Plugin, and Titanium backup. Does this mean it's already unlocked? Oh, and it came with Google Play installed. They take a 32GB SDHC just fine, but no HDMI. I also bought a FUBU Nabi awesome sauce thing for my kids. Can I backup the kids apps on the Nabi with Titanium to ext SD, then just restore them to the Uniden? My main question is, Is this thing already unlocked? Sorry for the Noobness. I learned to root the Nabi and sideload stuff in a couple hours on the Nabi, but still a noob..

BUMP
Sorry if it was wrong to bump, I believe it said it was okay to do so once every 24 hours.
I have the same device and I'm curious, I tried the z4root app, and I got no results. I installed superuser and nothing happened, or nothing seemed to happen, that would be awesome if it was already unlocked!
NOTE: When I opened the z4root app, it never said root/unroot, it looked like it said re-root/unroot, ao I'm guessing it might already be unlocked, but I'm having the hardest time finding out.
Does anyone happen to know?

Uniden UTAB71
My UTAB71 didn't come with Google Play store preloaded, and there wasn't an option to obtain it from the list of approved app stores you could download by clicking the 'Download App Stores' icon on the default launcher. I also tried installing it from the APK I downloaded from Android Police (w w w dot androidpolice.com/2012/11/02/download-latest-google-play-store-3-9-17/) to no avail.
I had previously purchased a 7" D2 pad from Big Lots and used a package I found on AndroidTablets.net (w w w dot androidtablets.net/forum/allwinner-a10-based/47980-can-anyone-help-me-2.html) to put Google play store on it, and this package also worked for the UTAB71. Look at the first post on the page (it's by user Erron and a link to his skydrive includes the necessary files).
This tablet is already rooted.
I haven't been able to find anything online concerning this tablet...not even from Uniden's or SouthernTeleCom's websites. I will use this thread for the time being for any updates I come across while toying with this device.
So far, I'm pretty satisfied...if I can have GO launcher and video chat via skype for $60, that's a win in my book. The tablet is relatively quick for only having a 1Ghz processor and 512MB ram. I haven't noticed any lag yet and seems as fast as the 1.2Ghz 1GB ram D2 pad I had purchased before.
EDIT1: I found the hidden support section for Uniden on Southern Telecom's website:
southerntelecom.com/unidentabletsupport/ although it doesn't have any info pertaining to the UTAB71...just a device called the UTAB430. I expect this is where we will find firmware updates, etc in the future.

I'm not sure what rooted means anymore. I know what root is on Linux, but... This let me install ES Explorer from exsd. I put 10GB of kids avi/mp4 videos on it and it plays them all fine. I guess if I can install anything I want from exsd I don't care if it's rooted. It is fast enough. It has a nice screen when playing hi-rez animated movies.
- Joe

I'm glad to hear that it is already rooted.
This makes me confused as to why superuser and other rooted apps would not properly operate. They got errors when trying to request superuser root permissions or something, i couldn't get error codes, just crashes...
I like it, its pretty quick, I however am trying to overclock it and so far no success.
Nothing drastic, just bumping it up to maybe 1.2 GHz at most.
Enough to stop the minor lags I encounter once in a blue moon...
Maybe Bumping the SD speed as well...
Its a nifty tablet, Very helpful in college. Since I got it, I don't have to lug around my ASUS 17" gaming laptop with all its mods, OC, and power chord anymore. Takes a load off my back. lol
Sorry if it looks like I'm hijacking this, I'm not. This thread seems relevant. And I'm thinking the OP might need this info as well, might come in handy for him in the future, idk...

Uniden UTAB71 and Netflix...
Does anyone know how to get Netflix to work on this? I bought one for my kids but if it cant get Netflix then it is going back to the store. Thanks

Try this (older) version:
w w w dot afreecodec.com/download/netflix-61_mobiletop1.html?o=down
The version in the Play store is unsupported, but installing an older version worked for me.

Here I found the process to load Google play store to the 7" tablet that i bought in Biglots.

Its made by Southern Telecom, not Uniden. It is just branded as Uniden. Southern Telecom also makes the Polaroid tablets along with like 20 other brands of tablets and mp3 players.

Looks good so far for a $50.

Picked on up, but in the process of trying to put gapps on it, I broke something. I just get to the second title screen. I can still ADB in and push/pull/shell/reboot/remount.
I see this if I run logcat...
E/FramebufferNativeWindow( 1363): Couldn't get gralloc module
E/SurfaceFlinger( 1363): Display subsystem failed to initialize. check logs. exiting...
Crap.

If someone could:
adb pull /system/etc/permissions
and post the resulting files somewhere, I think I could recover.
Pretty please?

Refer to my post #3. The method I used for putting gapps on mine is listed. Download the files from that guy's skydrive, run the runme.bat in the root/recover folder. Make sure to read the readme for specifics, but it worked fine for me.

I got one today and it's pretty decent. Anyone find out anything new?

Thanks for those instructions, I was able to get Play Store loaded on.
btw, out of the box the kernel allows for OC'ing.. I used ROM Toolbox Pro to OC to 1.2ghz. Anything higher made the tablet lock up, but ymmv.
The tablet is surpisingly quite responsive @1.2 ghz with Apex Launcher.

not to sound too nooby, but is there a way to connect this to a monitor?

I'm getting one of these, I will be experimenting with it alot, getting what I like to work =P

I was able to install Anroid Market / Google Play just fine using article on the-digital-reader.com
So far this is working fine for my uses, using Sign my Pad, to sign PDF work orders, and keep pdf service manuals at hand, testing wifi signals etc

A friend of mine just got one of these, and I put the Google Market on it, but it did not update to Play for some reason. Anyway, he had not set up any passwords on it, but after it went into sleep mode on him this morning, it came back wanting a password to access it. Well since he had never set it up, the password was unknown. He brought it to me this afternoon, because I hack a lot on Android devices. I was not able to get it to reset using the hard button on the side. It still always booted wanting a login password.
I tried getting it into recovery, but was never able to. There are only 2 buttons on the device, power and home. Does anybody have any idea how to get this tablet into recovery mode?
thx,

Did you guys try 0000 or 1234? I'd also suggest calling the company

I don't know how to get it into recovery.
I've been searching myself.
I however found a way to confirm this device is rooted. There is am app called "Root Checker"
In any app store, download that app, it should be free.
Anyways, I clicked to confirm if it was rooted, and it says it is already rooted.
Under my kernel version it says [email protected] #56 or something like that, so I'm assuming it was rooted and something to do with ubuntu...
Anyways, I've installed a terminal IDE app, and typed SU, shows # which I believe also means rooted.
--------------------------
Now that it is rooted, I've forgotten all my great ideas for changes and things to do that only rooted phones can do. Kinda sad. lol
But I will start looking for manual overclocking modification methods.
As I have not yet found any overclocking applications that support this devices hardware...
I like it a lot, runs flawlessly, and smooth, except for the ocassional lag on the internet browser, I'm thinking a small 0.1-0.2 GHz bump will do the trick.

EDIT:
Okay I went and got setCPU for android out of my Samsung phone and managed to get it installed on my tablet.
Here are the specs of the UNIDEN tablet 7" BELOW:::

******* I hope this helps all of us! I do not know where to start as far as modifying a kernel or ROM for this device, but I found these specs above.
SetCPU does seem to increase the CPU frequency, but I don't think the voltage changed at all, so... I will be working on what I can with my device, I will post if I find anything useful as far as anything goes.
Maybe with luck, this device will run windows 8 for ARM! I can only try.

Are you using the stock built in pre-loaded email app?
I couldn't say, I havent used it yet.
I do believe the device has the ability to copy and paste text, and that it also has a contacts list feature that you can edit the emails into.
However I don't know if they work together...
I use the gMail app. It and my gMail account seem to remember email addresses...
---------------------------------------------
I have been using SetCPU app from my phone in my android tablet, so far it has beem working fine.
The stock CPU speed is 1.001 GHz on this tablet.
So far I am running overclocked 1.2 GHz and it has been stable all day. Battery life seems to be the same.
It does get somewhat warm on the back of the device by the power button, but nothing drastic or alarming.
Remember: Overclocking is your choice and your actions alone, it can be fatal to the device if done incorrectly.
If anyone finds anything about these devices, I hope it gets posted here.
Maybe if we are lucky enough, because enough of us have these tablets, we will get our own device category and general forum for info and questions...
I forgot what else I was going to say... Other than I might look into the 4.1 Android updates and whatever comes next for android, and I will see if I can backup my current device files, OS, Kernal, etc and upgrade it.
But for now, I'm starting slow and working on finding more info. Anyone else getting any progress?
--------------------------------------
NOTE: Sorry this thread got hijacked into this. It sort-of because the Uniden tablet Know-it-all and what not spot of questions and answers.
I will stop if the OP and/or others decide it is nessisary.
If thats the case, I'd stop and then make a dedicated thread to this device and link this thread and my other question thread to that thread as "Relevant info"...

Very low cost tablet

Hi all, i'd like to buy a chinese android based tablet (price should be around 100€), i'd like to ask you which one do you suggest to buy.
I've seen one from my friend and i liked it, i didn't remember the model but i tought that the android market was not the official one, can it be? If so, there's any way i can install it? Or i can install other apps without the market?
Another question, are these upgradable? I thought that the Android inside the tablet was pretty old (1.6 maybe), this was not a problem in everyday use, but i'm a maniac and i like to have everything up to date, if i can.
Please let me know
Just bought the TechPad Android Tablet
I guess we'll see what can be done with these. I don't need an ereader so I am looking for this to be an extension of my android phone, GPS - browser - etc. I should receive it by the 9-25-10
It has OS 1.6 Android 7 Inch Tablet with a 800MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, 1Gb ROM, WiFi, and the Google Android Marketplace.

Look at this: http://www.slatedroid.com/
There are many store where you can buy that table you can do your own research on the web so you can select the right store that will meet your budget.
@superchaos
so did you get the 7 inch techpad unit yet? if so how is it?
I did.
It is not replacing my phone, I seem to be able to see a lot of the apps in the market but I am unable to download them. It just gets stuck at the starting download screen. Wifi connects really well and has a great connection.
Some apps just won't install like google earth, Google sky map, Swype doesn't recognize the device, etc.
The touch screen is kind of weak and you really have to press to get it to get the typing to work. The system files are accessible and there is a "su" folder. I am not real good at getting into anything. It looks to me like it is rooted but I have not figured out how to get into a recovery mode.
I have tried to connect it to the SDK from google and it does not recognize the device. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions.
Market issue is likely just Google servers. Happens all the time.
You need to test root by running an app like titanium backup which needs root, and see if it works.
For recovery, you would only get a stock one, and I doubt you will get a custom one online if the device is not common.
Is USB debugging enabled for adb, and have you looked for it in device manager to see its hardware id and check if the id is listed in the adb driver list?
@superchaos
judging from the price the screen probably is not capacitive type but resistive. how's the battery holding? how long does it last before you have to recharge? does it look like it's upgradable to android 2.2?
thanks.

It doesn't seem to be rooted. To get the adb shell to recognize the device and to get Dalvik Debug Monitor to see the device, I followed the instructions here rbgrn.net/content/399-how-to-get-archos-5-internet-tablet-adb-working-on-x64-windows
I used HiDROID instead of Archos5 and the device id is USB\VID_18D1&PID_0002&MI_01
I run winXP not win7 and this worked. Screen capture works too. The programs I installed that require root just force close.

The screen could be a lot better. It is like there is a film on top of the screen for touch capabilities. The battery holds really well unless you are watching videos. 4-5 hours of constant use. You can leave it plugged in too. I am hoping it is upgradeable. The OS is built for a phone.
How do I get a list of hardware devices in the phone? Not just the specs on the pamphlet but actual hardware names/mfg's?

Hi....I installed some apps from my G1 also. But the ones that depend on the market for update or rely on web interaction either won't install, force close or don't work quite right.
Man I sure hope that someone might tackle rooting this device soon. I think it has so much potential for being a useful device.
Rooting the Cruz Micro
Via tether its already rooted. Just adb shelled in and su works fine. So no rooting necessary as I understand it. However I am not a firmware guy so just my experience.
I did notice when I used Cruz Marketplace I got the option for Android Marketplace which has thousands of apps - not sure its Google's but worked well. One item to note is that the CPU in these is not an ARM but MIP's. It hasn't been a problem for me (if I am desperate I will just use a cross compiler to build something) but I have heard it caused issues on other forums for people.

I was in with ADB playing and got this from cat'ing procinfo.
system type : JZ4760
Hardware : PT701
processor : 0
cpu model : Ingenic Xburst V4.15 FPU V0.0
BogoMIPS : 527.56

microsecond timers : no
tlb_entries : 32

hardware watchpoint : yes, count: 1, address/irw mask: [0x0fff]

VCEI exceptions : not available
Googling Igenic will find their site for you. Notice the XBurst in the name. They have a lot of PDF's and information on their FTP site which the website links too. Unfortunately they have great detailed PDF's on the JZ4755 but nothing on the JZ4760. Had me wondering if they took a previous design and just customized a bit for the client.
I do realize of course that a LOT can change in even a small revision of a chip. Anyway - for the 4755 they have cross build tools, linux demos, board designs, nand and usbboot instructions etc.. Even the tool chains to build for the mip's.
Man this is the best XMas present my wife has got me in years
Is there a hack to install Android Market on this Cruz Tablet? Thanks.

(sorry for incomplete URL but am noob and can't post URL's)
I would love to find out if there is a way to port any of the existing ROMs to this device. The touchscreen is not responsive enough with the current firmware, but the keyboard is- that tells me there is the ability to increase responsiveness... other than that, the ability to run auto task killers would help because it looks like most apps stay resident and slow the device down considerably. Two problems that can be fixed by tweaking the firmware I believe- any developers out there with the desire to take this on?
You may want to check what's going on at slatedorid's forum. Google slate droid velocity cruz... cannot post the link
I have one as well.
I really like the device even though other tablets are offering better features in low-end tablets. I checked Best Buy today and it was $169. I got it for $199 last week before CES. I have the 7 inch T10(x) series. The capacitive display is ok for me, its like getting to know a new friend. Lack of security, Android Market, and built in obsolescence of the OS are bummers.
Worst - a smart device that keeps all your stuff but doesn't even have simple password/PIN protection. Doh!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that app does NOT give you access to the true Android Marketplace. The Android Marketplace is a Google hosted site, and it has thousands of apps. The Android App Store has less than 2k apps, definitely missing some big important ones, like the Pandora app for Android.
There ARE hacks to get the Android Market for the Reader, but so far I've not found a hack for the Tablet (and yes, there IS a difference).
Good luck to the OP. If anyone comes across a hack for the Tablet, I would love to know.

I got the T408, i have tried twice to install market and failed both times. I am one-click-rooted as it has the 2.3 Gingerbread... easy enough... now i just cant get half the apps i want from Amazon, or Applanet.
Google Market on Cruz Velocity T410
OK so my son got the T410 for christmas, I've got it rooted and am working on a push for the google market and frameworks. Should have it pretty soon. I'll post it as soon as I do.
UPDATE:
I will go through this quickly as it was actually pretty easy. This is how I did it, I had no problems so I would not anticipate any, however standard disclaimer, I can't be held responsible for anything you do to your device, I am simply sharing my experience. What you choose to do is up to you. I didi this on the T410, but I would expect it to work the same on the T408
1. Rooted with gingerbreak and installed superuser and busybox over it (search for it)
2. Placed the app folder (found inside the gapps.zip attached to this post) on my internal sd card.
3. Installed the apps in this order:
I DID NOT OPEN ANY OF THESE APPS AFTER INSTALLATION, ONLY CHOOSE DONE AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE.
onetimeinitializer.apk
setup.apk
googleservicesframework.apk
gmail.apk
maps.apk
talk.apk
vending.apk
AFTER THE LAST ONE IS INSTALLED, I REBOOTED MY TABLET.
Upon reboot I let the tablet fully cycle the sd card checks and all that, once I swiped to unlock the home screen, I was met with a decision asking whether to use Launcher, of Setup Wizard to complete the action.
CHECK THE BOX TO USE ACTION AS DEFAULT AND CHOOSE LAUNCHER
4. I then opened the google market, signed in with my gmail account and once it had synced my device with the google servers (yes WIFI must be on and connected, I had to say it because you just never know) I had access to the market.
I have downloaded a few apps and have had no problems, it is an older version of the market and I don't have market updater installed, but I may try that later.
I have also noticed when looking in the account and sync area, it will sync my gmail, but not my contacts or calender, I will have to look at that later as well.
Hope this helps

Was Able to root my wife's T408 as well with gingerbreak and have market 3.3.4 running on it now.
First I installed apps in the order you did had done. The version of Market is dated for sure but I was able to update to 2.2.6 via the stock OI File Explorer. Anything later then that seemed to crash. I then used SU & File Explorer to r/w the /system/apps/ folder , moved the newer 3.3.4 Market APK there and installed from that location along with a system reboot. Once rebooted the new market showed up right away. Only issue is some apps list as not compatible with device but having my wife use her Sidekick 4g to download and back up the app and email it to her tablet Netflix , Firefox , and many others ran with no issue even with Market saying not compatible.

I have noticed that as well. Seems like since the Market added the ability for apps to be device specific that alot of apps don't show up for devices that aren't supported. I am playing a little with the build.prop file and when I get it correct I will let you know. Even root explorer would not show up in the market, but I purchased it from amazon and Im using it to drop apps into place.
Android Market - I used the JGM ROM, rooted with z4root, and had blank Market. Accessing market via laptop showed my Cruz listed, but no serial number. Gave up, but then by luck a week later, I went to the Market on my laptop, found an App and selected my Cruz as the device to download it to. 2 hours later, sure enough the Market was working, and that select app downloaded.
It almost seems like you have to prime the market first for the Cruz via a computer...

[Rom] [CruzControlMOD] [Micro Velocity Cruz T301]

I soon will be getting a T301 (About 1pm or so today) and word on the street is that its been out while and no one has made any custom roms for it, Therefore im going to take a crack at it and see what i can do. This is my first tablet so be prepared for trial and error but I sure won't do a half-ass job on my work. Now heres a couple of things to come:
De-Odex
Custom Boot Animation
Custom Theme
New Keyboard With Demon Speed Tweaks
Plenty Of Under The Hood Tweaks
There will definitely be alot more (Hopefully), While at this time im not actually positive what this tablet is actually capable of but i will definitely have an update of whats to come by 3:00 after i test it and such.
Having any luck?
Hey well I hope there is someone that can make a custom rom for this tablet...here is some information ive been able to find out... From Rooting and Installing market:
TO Root Tablet..
After Installing "jdk-6u25-windows-i586" and "android-sdk_r11-windows" and "ADB_usb_driver"
Connect your device via USB.
Now, hold the Windows Key and press R. Type cmd in the box and press Enter.
In the Command window, type
cd/
and hit enter. Now type
cd android-sdk-windows
then type
cd platform-tools
and hit enter. Now here is where you will begin rooting the device. Type the following
adb devices "I did this to make sure the device was listed"
adb shell
and hit enter. you should now have a # sign.
Now Type
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
hit enter, then type
cat /system/bin/sh > /system/bin/su
hit enter, then type
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
hit enter, now type
sync
hit enter then finally type
reboot
and hit enter. Your device will reboot. When it comes back on it will be rooted!

To Install Market
Okay,
The following list includes the exact google apps package I used, and the order in which the extracted apk's were installed...
google apps package : PM me if you want the link...xda says after 8 posts I can posts links
Only use hdpi package for CyanogenMod 6, otherwise the apk version will be wrong
and with this apps package, I extracted all of the apk's inside, and used "all" of them.
They were installed in the following order :
app 1=genie widget apk
app 2=google backup transport apk
app 3=google contacts sync adapter apk
app 4=google feedback apk
app 5=google partner setup apk
app 6=google services framework apk
app 7=google voice apk
app 8=kickback apk
app 9=market updater apk
app10=media uploader apk
app11=network location apk
app12=setup wizard apk......
note: setup wizard apk is needed for the log in scripts to google market, and google talk respectively..
app13=soundback apk
app14=google talk apk
note: I believe google talk is the engine used for the market portal access....so you must install..
app15=vending apk
note: vending apk is installed last just prior to reboot of the cruz tablet...
this is the exact order of install from the above apps package I used....and I have 2 working cruz tablets with market access, google talk, and gmail.
Note: gmail apk is not included in the above apps package, and is downloaded from the market once it's working.
Note: dont be worried about space for the apk's. After the flash card partitions made in the 2.2 firmware update, you should have nearly 425 megabytes of application space remaining for apps later on. And the total size for the apps package is only 18 meg.
-------------------------------------
To Reset Market:
Thing is, I've found that a number of apps that don't appear in the Market still install just fine. For example, I can't locate Maps in the market, but it works, as does the similarly invisible Dolphin HD. There are hacks for the Market that are used to allow QVGA phones to see items that aren't specifically tagged as QVGA-compatible, so there may well be similar hacks to allow us to see more. (It may or may not install, but at least we'd have the chance to try.)
Tv
Edit: found a note on the Web re: the Market. An Archos user found that if you follow these steps:
Go to Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All tab;
Go to the "Market" app: "Clear Cache" then "Force Stop" — DO NOT Clear data;
Go to the "Google Services Framework" app: "Clear data" then "Force Stop";
Reboot your machine;
Restart the Market application. It may force close for the first run, ignore it and restart it again.
I would absolutely LOVE a custom rom OR even just a workaround that disables the notification bar from appearing on touch events in a full screen app.
Anybody want to tackle that one?
Cruz T301 Mods
I found some good information on Slatedroid.com The forum link is listed below.
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/21572-guide-cruz-t10x-t301-rooting-dalvik-turbo-removing-bloatware-gapps-market-more/
I used this method on two T301's and it worked great.
would love to see a custom rom for Cruz T-Series
would definitely donate as well. i think lots of people would especially with christmas coming and these things so cheap! also some other MIPS based devices with ICS are coming out so it would be a good learner for some people maybe.
i would love an AP included and i hear that this is what may be slowing up some other people right now other than just recently receiving source from Ingenic.
Its a great machine regardless, at least for the price.
anyway, this place is great and you all have helped me quite a bit. PLease let me know if there is anything i can do for you..
please stop
lets keep the market and the retardation out of this thread please. stop using incorrect terms to your post saying rooting your device. the CRUZ T301 IS ROOTED ALREADY. the commands you used gave you read write access. so please STOP WITH THE DUMB POST AND CALLING THIS ROOT. okay. now that we have that covered lets stop posting stuff that is covered in other forums. goochbuntu.com has better steps to make the market work. and even fixing the already rooted device fixing the su. so we can install and use rooted apps. okay now thats said..
okay lets focus on custom roms here or cynogenmod or something useful.
if you want to post useless info go back to slatedroid site
Technically correct and equal in value...

im looking for sum help as well. also where would be the best place to get the gapps? any help would be much apreciated
Okay update on root and by the way I have a Velocity Micro Cruz Reader just in case anyway I've successfully rooted my device using the method above but some reason I can't get my Market to work. I've been able to install apps like, Titanium Backup, SetCPU, Advanced Task Killer Pro and some other rooted apps but it still seems a little sluggish. I know its just a reader but I know it can put more. Ive been reading around but still haven't found a decent Rom or a recovery. It'll be greatly appreciated for a little guidance. Not to get off topic but My experience with android:
First Huawei Ascend, this phone introduced me to the Android OS and fell in love ever since. I flashed many roms to it starting with Cyanogen. Right now I have a HTC Evo 4G with SOS v 1.9. If someone needs help with something not saying I can do it but I'm willing to give it a try just shoot me a line and be glad to give my input. And LETS KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE we need more support for this device. The possibilities are endless besides the 256 ram lol. Thanks
I've been lucky enough to find some gapps from the XDA threads. Just grabbing when I can because I haven't found a complete file folder but I believe if you keep looking you'll find them. Have you tried Slatedroid, they also have support for the Velocity MICRO, you might find those apps their. I love my Cruz can't wait to flash a rom like cyanogen and clockwork recovery. But any suggestions would be great thanks.
CWM for T301 is here

If you head over to the Velocity Cruz section on Slate Droid you will see there is a new rom that was released 1/10/2012
how did you get setcpu installed. I followed a slatedroid thread and my buddies 310 seems to be rooted and such correctly but i can not get setcpu to install and can not seem to overclock it.
tried using cpu master pro but it just wont overclock past the 528
cant see setcpu in store and when i put the apk on the sd it just says app not installed.
so im guessing this rom is not happening right?
Thanks for the info. A couple of weeks ago Dad bought one of these T301 on Ebay for $20.00. It took a day or two but they called up and want to root, and get market on it. I was just looing at 4z, z4? Forgot but I bookmarked it as a get back to item. I looked at it and got the impression, "Gee thats nice, not worth messing with but nice."

I guess this is not happening +1
I also have a T301, and I know the filesystem comes with root access, but I have installed all that there is to install, from these forums, and the slatedroid forums.
I have froyo installed, but have never been able to install the VitalSource Bookshelf apk. I would like to use it to view my school textbooks, which is why I bought the tablet in the first place.
Today, I got this bug, up my behind (figuratively), and decided to see if their is anything that I can do about it. I have all the mips git repositories installed, along with an uncompressed stock update image.
What android version should I try to port? --> not that I know how to do that yet, but if there is a way, I will find it scouring the xda forums.
The Rasberry pi people seem to be making headway on porting ICS, so that may be a viable solution. Other than mips arch, this tablet has very similar specifications to a Rasberry pi.
The CDD for ICS says it needs like 379MB ram, and this tablet has only 256MB, but hey, so does the original RPI
What do you think?

Sorry, I just wanted to follow this thread also.
I am sure it is doable, I just have to find some free time. This time of year there is not a lot of time for me to sit down and figure this out. Hopefully I can get something going by Jan/Feb after the holiday season is over
....assuming the world does not end
t301 custom rom
ok,
So, this is what I have so far......
I'm sure that we can agree that the T301 uses an Ingenic JZ4760 processor. The JZ4760 processor uses mips32-r1 code. It is FP compatible. The JZ4770 on the other hand is a mips32-r2 code device.
There are also some other differences in the CPU's. I think video could also be a problem. The JZ4770 has a much nicer video module.
I think that we will need a custom build.
Is there a place that we can find the drivers to build or do we need to write our own?
ICS seems to be built on a newer kernel version, and mips technologies has released the 3.0.8 kernel, so I think that will be ok to build the ASOP, but I am sure the drivers will be the problem
I tore the tablet open, took some pictures, and made a list of the parts the I will most likely need to make drivers for.
I will attach the list, but it is a work in progress
Support over on SlateDroid
I am currently working with the T100 series, I don't think we should push any higher than GB for these tablets, seeing as how they run a max of 600MHZ. My friend developer was able to get the Ainol Novo 4.0 running on it, but he said it was far beyond usable. I am trying to get him to pass me the information that he had compiled into it so I can continue support of the device. I think I have a work around for Flash, and other specs... but I am waiting for my device to be returned to me since I had to RMA it due to bricking. I will post a thread over on SlateDroid and you can follow progress there. Once I get a functional rom that boots I will then post here at XDA. I am aiming to Odex since that will add speed, and debloat along with Market support. 2.2 will be the first release and once I can get that compiled 2.3 will happen. I will continue to play around with the idea of ICS, but once again due to low power I don't think it would be truly worth it...

[Q] What drivers for Protab IPS 2 and CM10.

Hi, I recently bought fantastic tablet Point of View Protab 2 IPS 9.7. Basically it is Allwinner A10 device. I tried to install new CyanogenMod 10 on it. Everything works flawessly, except one thing. I don't have any touchcontrols, probably because, I don't know what compatibility pack should I install. Could someone please give me advice, what drivers should I install to get working touchscreen on jelly beans 4.1(CM10)?

I have been trying to get it running myself so far I have tried just about every compatibilty pack.
All I know so far is this device has an upsidedown screen, and other users have had to make thier own comp packs with the "sun4i" which I think is the touch control.
Please let me know if you have any luck.

Hm, that's too bad. I hope, that someone will have drivers. Anyway, I will try to lsmod loaded drivers and built my own pack. Wish me luck.
Since I recently bought one of this, I would like to know if you had any effort on making it compatible to CM10. I really would like to use it. If I could help you with anything, let me know
I managed to extract the kernel module wich is called pixcir_touch.ko
Unfortunately it is not usable with the latest CM-Version due to a different Kernel Version.
When I try to load the module in CM10 with insmod, it returns an Exec format error.
dmesg then gives me an error indicating that this module is not appliable to the current kernel version (I can hand the detailed message, if you will).
I have no idea how to continue. Here is a link to the .ko module:
share-online.biz /dl/5BTVE4GMTX
Maybe this is a source code for the necessary driver to compile it, but I'm not sure and also my skills aren't good enough to compile it myself:
(google for auo-pixcir-ts.c)
Maybe someone could help me get this running.

I have send a mail to their support people to request the kernel source.
Let's hope they comply to the GPL.
Another approach would be to donwload a kernel tree from CM 10 and try to compile the source code you linked to.
Are you sure it is the proper driver?
Would be awesome if this pulls off
No i'm not sure. This is the only pixcir driver file I could find on the Internet
Hopefully they reply to your mail. The current Rom is very slow compared to the cm10.
Unfortunately my device was in a bootloop and i had to return it for repair.
Let me know when you receive an answer

Well, I did receive an answer, which in short said they cannot provide the source code.
I pointed to the GPL license and requested them to contact the lawyer department if they have one.
If they refuse, I am not sure what options there are to enforce it.
Some usefull info I found here:
https://android.googlesource.com/ke...885aa51f1abf3c40/drivers/hid/hid-multitouch.c
I read somewhere that support for this display is added by Stephane Chatty of ENAC.
Maybe someone can work with that source?
Mr. Chatty helped me before with a touch driver, if you do you some proper work and get stuck, I am sure you can contact him for help.
Personally I would love to dive in, but I can't find the time now.
Perhaps this helps some devs?
Can't imagine those drivers can't be made. Probably some dev setup on Linux for the proper 4.1 kernel version.
There is a ton of information on that.
this link is also interesting:
https://build.pub.meego.com/package...Project:KDE:Mer_Extras:Adaptation:Archos-gen9
It suggests they are in the Archos gen 9 and also that some kind of calibration is being developed.
Perhaps the ko can be pulled from an Archos gen9 rom ?
I saw your posting over in the Archos G9 Forums. Hopefully there is a chance to reuse this. I posted the same question in a large german Android-Forum. Maybe we can get it from there if noone replys here.
Furthermore the Archos seems to use two different touchscreen-devices: bit.ly / VUo71L
If you're correct, this might be the uncompiled driver: bit.ly / UIJ2Bq
But still I neither have an idea how to compile this, nor is my device back from repair.

another tip.
The main reason I wanted to update, because the browser was performing like thick **** rolling up a mountain against the wind.
And it hanged too sometimes.
When checking processes I noticed the nandd process being on top often.
After googling that process, I found somebody else also had a slow browser issue caused by this process.
He fixed it with a factory reset.
I did that too, and now the problem is solved.
I can also recommend installing setcpu. You can overclock till about 1200 (mine 1152 now) which makes it a bit snappier.
Mine is rooted by default, it just works, not sure if this is always the case.
And please mail POV for the kernel source .

Yeah, The overclcok makes a huge difference also changing governer to performance and io sceduler to noop.
Before my 8 year old used my tablet as a frisbee, I was trying to tweak it futher with pimp my rom from the market, it has some great tweaks for this tab.
I never got any increase in the benchmarks but resposiveness was up with my tegra phone.
Also opera is a fantstic browser for this tab, once ya figure out how to use it you will be hooked.

You can change the sceduler in SetCPU
Also i found if i had performance governer enabled i couldnt over clock past 1100 or it would reboot its self
Bought myself this tablet as well. is all nice and good but the 3G is giving me a headache. with the stock rom it works excatly as long as you don't turn on wifi. after that even if you turn wifi off again it wont connect to 3G anymore.
Firmware side isn't helping much either. V4.008 is without 3G (in the settings there is now only a list of supported dongles. and the 3Gfix image has same issue, you see 3G only once until you turn on wifi)
So i was hoping for a better rom but looks like the CM9/CM10 department can't help either. So i was hopin if you guys have had any progress.
E: i have been in contact with POV support over the last week and the only useful intel i ahve gotten out of them is that as far as they are aware there are no clones for this tablet. Also it appears that there is a android 4.1 based firmware for the tablet in the testing. They are not sure if they release it tough.
anybody tried to fix a touch driver for this device?
I had to send my tab back for repair since my headphone jack wasn't working anymore.
Unfortunately they were out of stock so that they couldn't send me a new one and refunded me.
I will not buy a new protab2 9,7 because it's so laggy. I hope you all can figure out a solution for the touch-issue. I'll leave you here, guys. Thanks for your help anyways

I'm sorry guys, been looking awhile myself, and I don't think it's a popular enough machine for any devs to actually bother working on it. I'd like to find a way to get GAPPS on it myself, but I'm not sure that's gonna happen.

I am confused as I thought that all 'Android 4.0' devices were automatically supported by the Google Play Store through the 'CHROME' web browser that is part of 4.0?
For less than $60 shipped as of today.. I may buy one as a replacement self printed book of my movie disc collection .. as my cost for the ink, paper & time for my now growing 200+ page listing book (the replacement ink cartridges alone cost me $30 each time I print.)
Update >
I went ahead and ordered one just to see.. I read where I could side load "Google Play" in another forum... And if not that most of the apps that I use come from Amazon Market which is to also work.. will report what I find out.. yea I could wait.. but since is seems that WalMart might be offering two different models on "Black Friday" I said why wait in line and find out it is their other model that has worse ratings..
I ordered 5 of them for the grandchildren, specs look good, 1.2 ghz processor, ICS, 7" screen, good deal for $60. I've downloaded older version .apk files for play store on Chinese tablets and installed fine.

I just received this device from "Wal-Mart" and over all with only an hour of use I must say I am a bit worried about the power supply as it is very hot to the touch and I am afraid of leaving it plugged in for the six hour time it would take to fully charge, since the power adapter is only 5volts I wonder if there is a USB power cable that will fit this device?
Also missing from the package were the "Headphones & Protective Sleeve" that was listed on the OEM's web site.
It does have Flash 11.1 (if I remember correctly) installed!
The first time I tried to use the web browser it took me to the "Amazon" and downloaded there store. (there seems to be a bit of screen sizing issue for the stores command box?)
It played the first episode of "BLOOD AND CHROME" from 'YouTube' with out a single hick-up.
More as I learn more... the main reason I purchased is to install the end user created plug-in for DVDProfiler for Android to store my DISC movie collection on... as currently if I print out a book, due to the size of my collection it costs me in Ink-Jet ink alone over $70.00...

So far for a $59 device I am really impressed... all but one .apk that I have loaded runs with out issue... the one giving me an issue is.. I have yet to find a version of 'Google Play Store' that will load and run... Store starts loading then when I get to what seems to be the users agreement I get a "Stopped Running Error"!?
The '''Headphones & Protective Sleeve''' are being sold as a separate item by WalMart for $6.00.
Since it uses a separate charging port you can charge and use.. unlike my Dell Streak-7 which will not charge and use if plugged into a power source.
The battery under heavy use tonight lasted 4.5 hours... before the device would not allow me to use it.
The free movie service "CRACKLE" works.
I am using a rubber tipped 'tablet styles' on the tablet.

It doesn't look like it has access to the Play Store so I was wondering if I could root it and put a custom ROM on it with access to the Play Store. Here is the link:

I understand that following will work with any 'ematic' tablet running Android 4.0.x or higher
How to root 'Eglide'
Solved!!
Got working google play om my genesis today....finally!
Followed directions here-odroid.foros-phpbb.com/t1200-installing-google-apps-play-store-gmail-etc
Irecieved an error [RPC:S-5:AEC-0] when I tried at first, then went to settings-accounts and deleted my google account. Opened Play, followed prompts, added existing user...Viola
None of my sideloaded apps show up in My Apps, but searching for them and updating caused them to show up.

The process you linked to is for not only loading the 'GAPPS' but also to "ROOT" the device.
I really don't want to do a full 'GAPPS' install and know that "PLAY STORE" can be loaded with out the "ROOT"ing on some devices running older version of Android 3.x.x.. as I use to have a "Pandigital Novel" w/2.01 and a person that know more about Android OS than I do went into the 'APK' and removed the unneeded files and edited one file and recombined the 'APK' so that it could be side loaded and install "STORE", the trick with it was you would install with todays date, then change the system date/time back at least 12 hours, reboot and connect to the store and log off then reboot and reset the clock to the correct time and go to the store all all worked just fine...
If I was going to ROOT this device I would move all the pre-installed APPs so that they could be uninstalled to free up system memory..
While I have not "OPENED" the case yet does anybody know if the base memory can be expanded??.. Many tablets use MICRO SD cards for their system memory and all you have to do is to open the case and up grade the SD card.. but a few others the memory is soldered on the mainboard of the tablet.

Woohoo! This worked on my genesis. I did not have to search for a Rom that allowed all buttons or wifi to work. The play store is installed. allows me to get all apps and I couldn't be happier.
Now off to start writing apps with all the knowledge I have taken in Modding chinese tablets! LOL
Nook Tablet (CM9)
Mach Speed Trio Stealth 7c (speed4.04_1.0.3)
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (rooted(no mods yet)
Nook Color (CM7)
Ematic Genesis (rooted with play store stock rom)

Actually, I gotta correct you on that. I just plugged this tablet in (I bought 2 for my kids for birthdays earlier this month) to my cell charger, and it charges just fine. For that matter, it also charges from a USB port on my netbook.... or even from the micro USB port on my Xoom when a USB/microUSB adapter is used. I found that last bit to be a bit odd, but hey, it works lol

Power
If you had not already found out ... did you know that you could recharge using only the USB port!

I have tried following the instructions from your posting and I am lost... and I have rooted other Android devices on an older 32bit Vista computer but ABD could not find my device on my current 64bit Windows 7 system.

Yea!
FYI.. After spending most of Thanksgiving on this project... I finally got my device Root'ed ...and a 'Gapps Package' pushed onto my device.
I used the universal package for 4.0.x from http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps

His did you get root? From what I could tell of the links above, they are only for installing gapps... which I managed to get pushed and installed to one of these that I bought...

Update: The following is for your information I can not be held liable if you "Brick" your tablet as this worked for me, but try at your own risk!!
Read this page: Universal Root
Use this utility: Root_with_Restore
Then download the GAPPS from the above link and extract and find the folder "SYSTEM"
Open a dos command prompt window.
Now connect your tablet via USB and be sure that you have it set for USB DEBUGGING in the system / development
DO NOT TURN IN USB STORAGE.
Go to the folder where you extracted the download "Root_with_Restore" go to the folder 'STUFF' and from the command box type " adb device " you should see your tablet connected.
Run the "BAT" file from "Root_with_Restore" [I do not remember for sure but I know that "Other" did not work so I choose the option above it.]
Then find where you extracted the GAPPS system folder and type: adb push <if needed type in the full drive+folder listing>system /system : now wait.. you should see allot of screen messages. till you get a message saying complete.
Unplug the USB cable and turn off your tablet.
Turn on your tablet... this may take longer than in the past.. but you should have a working "GOOGLE PLAY STORE" once your system comes up.
Please post back if this works for you or if I need to try to expand the instructions.
I am sure that some real DOS/Android programmer could make a single .ZIP and .BAT file to take care of everything more cleanly.
