[Q] What drivers for Protab IPS 2 and CM10. - General Questions and Answers

Hi, I recently bought fantastic tablet Point of View Protab 2 IPS 9.7. Basically it is Allwinner A10 device. I tried to install new CyanogenMod 10 on it. Everything works flawessly, except one thing. I don't have any touchcontrols, probably because, I don't know what compatibility pack should I install. Could someone please give me advice, what drivers should I install to get working touchscreen on jelly beans 4.1(CM10)?

I have been trying to get it running myself so far I have tried just about every compatibilty pack.
All I know so far is this device has an upsidedown screen, and other users have had to make thier own comp packs with the "sun4i" which I think is the touch control.
Please let me know if you have any luck.

Hm, that's too bad. I hope, that someone will have drivers. Anyway, I will try to lsmod loaded drivers and built my own pack. Wish me luck.

Since I recently bought one of this, I would like to know if you had any effort on making it compatible to CM10. I really would like to use it. If I could help you with anything, let me know

I managed to extract the kernel module wich is called pixcir_touch.ko
Unfortunately it is not usable with the latest CM-Version due to a different Kernel Version.
When I try to load the module in CM10 with insmod, it returns an Exec format error.
dmesg then gives me an error indicating that this module is not appliable to the current kernel version (I can hand the detailed message, if you will).
I have no idea how to continue. Here is a link to the .ko module:
share-online.biz /dl/5BTVE4GMTX
Maybe this is a source code for the necessary driver to compile it, but I'm not sure and also my skills aren't good enough to compile it myself:
(google for auo-pixcir-ts.c)
Maybe someone could help me get this running.

has anyone found or compiled the module yet?
I looked through most of the compatibility files and could not find it.
Would be awesome to have a good 4.1 on this tablet!

perhaps this helps:
http://downloads.pointofview-online...ab-ips 8GB TAB-PROTAB2-IPS9 Firmware Upgrade/
I have send a mail to their support people to request the kernel source.
Let's hope they comply to the GPL.
Another approach would be to donwload a kernel tree from CM 10 and try to compile the source code you linked to.
Are you sure it is the proper driver?
Would be awesome if this pulls off

No i'm not sure. This is the only pixcir driver file I could find on the Internet
Hopefully they reply to your mail. The current Rom is very slow compared to the cm10.
Unfortunately my device was in a bootloop and i had to return it for repair.
Let me know when you receive an answer

Well, I did receive an answer, which in short said they cannot provide the source code.
I pointed to the GPL license and requested them to contact the lawyer department if they have one.
If they refuse, I am not sure what options there are to enforce it.
Some usefull info I found here:
https://android.googlesource.com/ke...885aa51f1abf3c40/drivers/hid/hid-multitouch.c
I read somewhere that support for this display is added by Stephane Chatty of ENAC.
Maybe someone can work with that source?
Mr. Chatty helped me before with a touch driver, if you do you some proper work and get stuck, I am sure you can contact him for help.
Personally I would love to dive in, but I can't find the time now.
Perhaps this helps some devs?
Can't imagine those drivers can't be made. Probably some dev setup on Linux for the proper 4.1 kernel version.
There is a ton of information on that.
this link is also interesting:
https://build.pub.meego.com/package...Project:KDE:Mer_Extras:Adaptation:Archos-gen9
It suggests they are in the Archos gen 9 and also that some kind of calibration is being developed.
Perhaps the ko can be pulled from an Archos gen9 rom ?

I saw your posting over in the Archos G9 Forums. Hopefully there is a chance to reuse this. I posted the same question in a large german Android-Forum. Maybe we can get it from there if noone replys here.
Furthermore the Archos seems to use two different touchscreen-devices: bit.ly / VUo71L
If you're correct, this might be the uncompiled driver: bit.ly / UIJ2Bq
But still I neither have an idea how to compile this, nor is my device back from repair.

can you please use full links instead of those very irritating-twitter-like short-urls ?
I would like to know where it is pointing to (and it did not work on my android).
I think there is a good chance it might work.
Last time I compiled kernel modules, i noticed it is importent al versioning stuff is matched properly.
POV is not really cooperating in terms of open source obligations.
They are not the first.....

I really would like to post normal links but I cant since I'm not meeting the conditions for posting links here in the Forums (I need at least 10 posts hiere in the forums). I'm close to this.
Removing the whitespace before and after the slash should do it. Sorry for the inconvenience!

ok, np. sorry did not know that. I think we have gathered quite some resources for devs.
Perhaps someone can create a forum item for our device?
Sorry, personally I cannot find time at the moment.
I do have time to test any dev builds by the way...

another tip.
The main reason I wanted to update, because the browser was performing like thick **** rolling up a mountain against the wind.
And it hanged too sometimes.
When checking processes I noticed the nandd process being on top often.
After googling that process, I found somebody else also had a slow browser issue caused by this process.
He fixed it with a factory reset.
I did that too, and now the problem is solved.
I can also recommend installing setcpu. You can overclock till about 1200 (mine 1152 now) which makes it a bit snappier.
Mine is rooted by default, it just works, not sure if this is always the case.
And please mail POV for the kernel source .

Yeah, The overclcok makes a huge difference also changing governer to performance and io sceduler to noop.
Before my 8 year old used my tablet as a frisbee, I was trying to tweak it futher with pimp my rom from the market, it has some great tweaks for this tab.
I never got any increase in the benchmarks but resposiveness was up with my tegra phone.
Also opera is a fantstic browser for this tab, once ya figure out how to use it you will be hooked.

You can change the sceduler in SetCPU
Also i found if i had performance governer enabled i couldnt over clock past 1100 or it would reboot its self

Bought myself this tablet as well. is all nice and good but the 3G is giving me a headache. with the stock rom it works excatly as long as you don't turn on wifi. after that even if you turn wifi off again it wont connect to 3G anymore.
Firmware side isn't helping much either. V4.008 is without 3G (in the settings there is now only a list of supported dongles. and the 3Gfix image has same issue, you see 3G only once until you turn on wifi)
So i was hoping for a better rom but looks like the CM9/CM10 department can't help either. So i was hopin if you guys have had any progress.
E: i have been in contact with POV support over the last week and the only useful intel i ahve gotten out of them is that as far as they are aware there are no clones for this tablet. Also it appears that there is a android 4.1 based firmware for the tablet in the testing. They are not sure if they release it tough.

anybody tried to fix a touch driver for this device?

I had to send my tab back for repair since my headphone jack wasn't working anymore.
Unfortunately they were out of stock so that they couldn't send me a new one and refunded me.
I will not buy a new protab2 9,7 because it's so laggy. I hope you all can figure out a solution for the touch-issue. I'll leave you here, guys. Thanks for your help anyways

Nothing yet?
I see there are a compability zip for the protab2xxl at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760929, annyone knows if that is helpful for the protab 2 IPS 9?

Mer linux for kaiser.

You just need to disable FB_MSM_DOUBLE_BUFFER ("Enable MSM Framebuffer double buffering") and enable framebuffer refresh thread.

Yeah, I kinda doomed myself from the start with how I structured this post. I'll restructure it later to be more able to show you good information.
Old start:
Mer is a more community-led version of the Maemo phone and internet tablet operating system. See http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/ .
I was in contact with a member of that project (Stskeeps on freenode#mer), who gave me some information about porting this to phones such as the kaiser. He and I thought it would be a great way to benefit both communities (we get a good, not google-owned linux-based os for our phones, they get developers helping them make mer better). We also agreed that it would take a bit of effort.
First of all, Mer is completely designed for landscape-only, 800x480 phones at this point. It has been run well at 640x480, but that's still 4 times our native resolution, and 2 times what we can fake without crashes. The resolution problem is easily fixed by skilled theme-makers. The landscape/portrait problem should be fixed soon, given that the upcoming n900 will be a portrait/landscape phone. He said wait for the maemo conference for more on that.
The other problems we might hit basically are just the standard problems of molding the userspace around the kernel (get a phone app working, get the modem to work, etc.).
If you are serious about helping, please come to #mer and/or #htc-linux on freenode. At this point, the mer folks are probably more help to what we need to do.
INSTRUCTIONS:
At this point, quite literally nothing works, but it all almost works. Here's what I did to get that far:
1. Partition your sd card into two partitions, and make the second one ext2.
2. Unpack (with the -p option of tar) the rootfs (http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/Releases/0.16testing , pick the q5 rootfs) to the ext2 partition. Make sure that it's not in any subfolders, but as the root of the drive.
3. Grab a zImage (or build your own) using the instructions we had in place from android. Put it on the fat side.
4. Set up HaRET on the fat side - Use a default.txt from android, get rid of the initrd, get rid of your ppp stuff (for now), and add "root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootwait" to the kernel cmdline.
5. mknod /dev/fb0 c 29 0 (this was my number, check using the terminal in android, cat /proc/devices for the major, and /proc/fb for the minor). Also make sure that it's within the root, not on your disk .
That should boot, giving you a ton of messages about an "incorrect resolution png" or something - that's the splash screen unable to load. Simply rename /lib/init/splash-* (two files) to something else. Once you get a terminal later, there's an actual package to remove, but this lets it go a bit further.
You also need to keep X from starting at this point - all it does is hang. I have not yet done this myself, but it should be an initscript that you just un-link.
EDIT: It wasn't X that caused the issues. It was the combination of failed splashes and consolefont. Comment out the lines with "splash" in them in /etc/init.d/check{fs,root}.sh, and re-run.
I do not know if X actually fails - doing that test now.
EDIT: hitting framebuffer issues... no X yet.
So, if you're adventurous, and preferably a dev at this point (this is completely useless to users), please try this out and make it better!
Okay, just a note: the password is "rootme".
First reply!
this is relevant to my interests. I'll take a look. I remember seeing that Maemo was made on top of Gnome. Do you know if there's a chance to get Debian apps on here? That's the big thing for me to get me working on it-- some type of desktop compatibility. Having an X-server is perfect. Looks like you're saying the resolution issue is purely theme based? How open are the devs for it for suggestions and feedback?
2nd reply
This does sound cool
already made some read about this in the new nokia n900..
its cool.. it free.. but i dont like the ui :\
lets see where this goes.. but.. for now.. for me... android (L)
Ok, just saw it's Jaunty based which is what I've been looking for in a phone.
Is there a list of features/bugs/issues and what's been developed so far? Seems like if the kernel brought to us in part by dzo will work maybe it won't be so hard to get wifi and other features working. A list is good.
I'll admit I haven't put much effort into it, but at this point X won't work, for one thing - probably have to change the resolution in a config somewhere.
Indeed, most of the hardware should be fine - I imagine, for example, once we are able to load the firmware, wifi should be good. Some code will have to change (a few things are built android-specific in the kernel), and some of the RIL stuff especially (phone, data, etc.) will have to be ported by someone who has that code and some time.
Indeed, Mer is Ubuntu-based, and so, according to their site, 95% of ubuntu apps should work perfectly. This is really nice for getting software on (aren't just limited to any applications in an app store or market.).
At this point, all we need to do is everything .
I'm going to try now to disable X and see if I can't get a few more things working.
EDIT: in response to your question about how open the mer-folk are to suggestions? The idea that I got from talking to them was that they are more than happy to get this extra help, and since they are trying to bring this to more devices, they are willing to put up with our requirements, to make this more readily available in general.
Alright, as I edited, I got some more success.
By removing the splash calls and the X starting, I can get a terminal. I edited the /etc/shadow file to have a password that I knew for root. Now, I can log in as root on the console (/dev/tty1).
I tried to start X, and I'm getting some strange framebuffer errors.
I'll keep you posted.
Wow, if we could get this working, it'd be sick! Thanks for posting, formatting now.
with all the hard work already done for the Android port, seeing devs being interested in Mer is REALLY PROMISING! Waiting for Google to open up Android even more, is frustrating...
Porting Mer and thus having a REAL linux (kernel+software stack) is what we need to leverage the dev capacity of the great XDA community. At least, this is what I feel like .
Owning both a Kaiser and 2 N800s, I'll probably try out the stuff posted here... I was keeping an eye on Mer for my N800s anyway, but using it on the Kaiser is more triggering
so devs, have courage and good luck!
Frame Buffer and X server
Unfortunately I've been quite busy lately and haven't been following the Android development as closely as I would like. (I don't think I've updated my git repo for months)
If I remember correctly, the frame buffer code in the kernel wasn't finished. That would prevent X from running. Can anyone say whether that was completed? I just wanted to mention this in order to avoid people wasting their time if it is in fact the problem.
It would be great to *eventually* see X running with hardware acceleration, can anyone point me to info about how DZO got that working? Was it reverse engineered, or did he figure out how to make some binary blob happy?
It will be nice to have some choice of Linux based distros the Kaiser and Vogue. Keep up the good work everybody, I appreciate it!

I've been looking at the n900 for quite some time just waiting for its release to the US next month. I know nothing about developing but I am very excited about this one, and I hope that there is a quick start to the apps that are put out for it. I was curious myself as well at how this would port to the kaiser so I could get a good hands on before I went and bought one. I would be more than happy to be a tester. I bought an iphone cause cause the little green guy is really starting to piss me off and my tilt's about to give up the ghost. I quickly gave it to my wife as the signal strength and battery life just sucks so I hope this maemo can give me what I want
mysteryvortex, Android does not use an X server at all. This was my disappointment when issues arose trying to run Ubuntu in a chroot. This is different though. We should be looking at troubleshooting the X server as top priority I think. The rest should flow. Bear in mind the kernel for Android, like I said, has nothing to do with X compatibility since Android uses its own display so the kernel should need some serious work.
poly, is the build you linked to hardware specific? Looks like a generic one. If so, then the only outstanding difference should be the kernel and if that's the case we should be able to use this on any phone we happen to have a kernel for right?

The build has a kernel and stuff, but don't use it. Use the regular stuff from android (or build yourself from htc-vogue).
mdrobnak from irc got mer up on his raph - thanks to the vga screen, with a quick kernel patch and some xorg.conf modification, he got X working great.
Within the next few days, I'll do some tests of the data connection and such.

Yes, that's correct. Android doesn't use X. Many, many months ago, it was mentioned that the framebuffer in the Vouge/Kaiser kernel (which X will use) was broken. Nobody was planning to fix it since Android doesn't need it. I was just trying to point people who have time to work on supporting our phones in the right direction.

poly_poly-man,
I have setup my second partition of sdcard to 512MB and extracted there Mer preserving permissions.
What I did also is to modify the x config and change resolution and also resize the Mer-logo.jpg so it fits.
After I tried to boot I went successfully through all steps (at least I think so) and a blank screen appeared to me.
Can you tell me what was the parameter to output the Haret boot sequence to a file, so I can check what passes and what fails?
Another question: The following "mknod /dev/fb0 c 29" have to be performed on root of second permission, right? If so I think the command should be ""mknod ./dev/fb0 c 29", am I correct?

Borkata

It seems that even set to the right resolution, our fb does not work with X. Needs more patching than just the patches I got from the other branch. We may need to move up to the other branch, I'm not sure.
the /dev/fb0 should be replaced with /path/to/sdcard/root/dev/fb0, of course. And it's better to just get rid of all the splash references - that way, you don't get the blank screen issue.

[Rom] [CruzControlMOD] [Micro Velocity Cruz T301]

I soon will be getting a T301 (About 1pm or so today) and word on the street is that its been out while and no one has made any custom roms for it, Therefore im going to take a crack at it and see what i can do. This is my first tablet so be prepared for trial and error but I sure won't do a half-ass job on my work. Now heres a couple of things to come:
De-Odex
Custom Boot Animation
Custom Theme
New Keyboard With Demon Speed Tweaks
Plenty Of Under The Hood Tweaks
There will definitely be alot more (Hopefully), While at this time im not actually positive what this tablet is actually capable of but i will definitely have an update of whats to come by 3:00 after i test it and such.
Having any luck?
Hey well I hope there is someone that can make a custom rom for this tablet...here is some information ive been able to find out... From Rooting and Installing market:
TO Root Tablet..
After Installing "jdk-6u25-windows-i586" and "android-sdk_r11-windows" and "ADB_usb_driver"
Connect your device via USB.
Now, hold the Windows Key and press R. Type cmd in the box and press Enter.
In the Command window, type
cd/
and hit enter. Now type
cd android-sdk-windows
then type
cd platform-tools
and hit enter. Now here is where you will begin rooting the device. Type the following
adb devices "I did this to make sure the device was listed"
adb shell
and hit enter. you should now have a # sign.
Now Type
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
hit enter, then type
cat /system/bin/sh > /system/bin/su
hit enter, then type
chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
hit enter, now type
sync
hit enter then finally type
reboot
and hit enter. Your device will reboot. When it comes back on it will be rooted!

To Install Market
Okay,
The following list includes the exact google apps package I used, and the order in which the extracted apk's were installed...
google apps package : PM me if you want the link...xda says after 8 posts I can posts links
Only use hdpi package for CyanogenMod 6, otherwise the apk version will be wrong
and with this apps package, I extracted all of the apk's inside, and used "all" of them.
They were installed in the following order :
app 1=genie widget apk
app 2=google backup transport apk
app 3=google contacts sync adapter apk
app 4=google feedback apk
app 5=google partner setup apk
app 6=google services framework apk
app 7=google voice apk
app 8=kickback apk
app 9=market updater apk
app10=media uploader apk
app11=network location apk
app12=setup wizard apk......
note: setup wizard apk is needed for the log in scripts to google market, and google talk respectively..
app13=soundback apk
app14=google talk apk
note: I believe google talk is the engine used for the market portal access....so you must install..
app15=vending apk
note: vending apk is installed last just prior to reboot of the cruz tablet...
this is the exact order of install from the above apps package I used....and I have 2 working cruz tablets with market access, google talk, and gmail.
Note: gmail apk is not included in the above apps package, and is downloaded from the market once it's working.
Note: dont be worried about space for the apk's. After the flash card partitions made in the 2.2 firmware update, you should have nearly 425 megabytes of application space remaining for apps later on. And the total size for the apps package is only 18 meg.
-------------------------------------
To Reset Market:
Thing is, I've found that a number of apps that don't appear in the Market still install just fine. For example, I can't locate Maps in the market, but it works, as does the similarly invisible Dolphin HD. There are hacks for the Market that are used to allow QVGA phones to see items that aren't specifically tagged as QVGA-compatible, so there may well be similar hacks to allow us to see more. (It may or may not install, but at least we'd have the chance to try.)

Edit: found a note on the Web re: the Market. An Archos user found that if you follow these steps:
Go to Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All tab;
Go to the "Market" app: "Clear Cache" then "Force Stop" — DO NOT Clear data;
Go to the "Google Services Framework" app: "Clear data" then "Force Stop";
Reboot your machine;
Restart the Market application. It may force close for the first run, ignore it and restart it again.
I would absolutely LOVE a custom rom OR even just a workaround that disables the notification bar from appearing on touch events in a full screen app.
Anybody want to tackle that one?
Cruz T301 Mods
I found some good information on Slatedroid.com The forum link is listed below.
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/21572-guide-cruz-t10x-t301-rooting-dalvik-turbo-removing-bloatware-gapps-market-more/
I used this method on two T301's and it worked great.
would love to see a custom rom for Cruz T-Series
would definitely donate as well. i think lots of people would especially with christmas coming and these things so cheap! also some other MIPS based devices with ICS are coming out so it would be a good learner for some people maybe.
i would love an AP included and i hear that this is what may be slowing up some other people right now other than just recently receiving source from Ingenic.
Its a great machine regardless, at least for the price.
anyway, this place is great and you all have helped me quite a bit. PLease let me know if there is anything i can do for you..
please stop
lets keep the market and the retardation out of this thread please. stop using incorrect terms to your post saying rooting your device. the CRUZ T301 IS ROOTED ALREADY. the commands you used gave you read write access. so please STOP WITH THE DUMB POST AND CALLING THIS ROOT. okay. now that we have that covered lets stop posting stuff that is covered in other forums. goochbuntu.com has better steps to make the market work. and even fixing the already rooted device fixing the su. so we can install and use rooted apps. okay now thats said..
okay lets focus on custom roms here or cynogenmod or something useful.
if you want to post useless info go back to slatedroid site
Technically correct and equal in value...

im looking for sum help as well. also where would be the best place to get the gapps? any help would be much apreciated
Okay update on root and by the way I have a Velocity Micro Cruz Reader just in case anyway I've successfully rooted my device using the method above but some reason I can't get my Market to work. I've been able to install apps like, Titanium Backup, SetCPU, Advanced Task Killer Pro and some other rooted apps but it still seems a little sluggish. I know its just a reader but I know it can put more. Ive been reading around but still haven't found a decent Rom or a recovery. It'll be greatly appreciated for a little guidance. Not to get off topic but My experience with android:
First Huawei Ascend, this phone introduced me to the Android OS and fell in love ever since. I flashed many roms to it starting with Cyanogen. Right now I have a HTC Evo 4G with SOS v 1.9. If someone needs help with something not saying I can do it but I'm willing to give it a try just shoot me a line and be glad to give my input. And LETS KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE we need more support for this device. The possibilities are endless besides the 256 ram lol. Thanks
I've been lucky enough to find some gapps from the XDA threads. Just grabbing when I can because I haven't found a complete file folder but I believe if you keep looking you'll find them. Have you tried Slatedroid, they also have support for the Velocity MICRO, you might find those apps their. I love my Cruz can't wait to flash a rom like cyanogen and clockwork recovery. But any suggestions would be great thanks.
CWM for T301 is here

If you head over to the Velocity Cruz section on Slate Droid you will see there is a new rom that was released 1/10/2012
how did you get setcpu installed. I followed a slatedroid thread and my buddies 310 seems to be rooted and such correctly but i can not get setcpu to install and can not seem to overclock it.
tried using cpu master pro but it just wont overclock past the 528
cant see setcpu in store and when i put the apk on the sd it just says app not installed.
so im guessing this rom is not happening right?
Thanks for the info. A couple of weeks ago Dad bought one of these T301 on Ebay for $20.00. It took a day or two but they called up and want to root, and get market on it. I was just looing at 4z, z4? Forgot but I bookmarked it as a get back to item. I looked at it and got the impression, "Gee thats nice, not worth messing with but nice."

I guess this is not happening +1
I also have a T301, and I know the filesystem comes with root access, but I have installed all that there is to install, from these forums, and the slatedroid forums.
I have froyo installed, but have never been able to install the VitalSource Bookshelf apk. I would like to use it to view my school textbooks, which is why I bought the tablet in the first place.
Today, I got this bug, up my behind (figuratively), and decided to see if their is anything that I can do about it. I have all the mips git repositories installed, along with an uncompressed stock update image.
What android version should I try to port? --> not that I know how to do that yet, but if there is a way, I will find it scouring the xda forums.
The Rasberry pi people seem to be making headway on porting ICS, so that may be a viable solution. Other than mips arch, this tablet has very similar specifications to a Rasberry pi.
The CDD for ICS says it needs like 379MB ram, and this tablet has only 256MB, but hey, so does the original RPI
What do you think?

Sorry, I just wanted to follow this thread also.
I am sure it is doable, I just have to find some free time. This time of year there is not a lot of time for me to sit down and figure this out. Hopefully I can get something going by Jan/Feb after the holiday season is over
....assuming the world does not end
t301 custom rom
ok,
So, this is what I have so far......
I'm sure that we can agree that the T301 uses an Ingenic JZ4760 processor. The JZ4760 processor uses mips32-r1 code. It is FP compatible. The JZ4770 on the other hand is a mips32-r2 code device.
There are also some other differences in the CPU's. I think video could also be a problem. The JZ4770 has a much nicer video module.
I think that we will need a custom build.
Is there a place that we can find the drivers to build or do we need to write our own?
ICS seems to be built on a newer kernel version, and mips technologies has released the 3.0.8 kernel, so I think that will be ok to build the ASOP, but I am sure the drivers will be the problem
I tore the tablet open, took some pictures, and made a list of the parts the I will most likely need to make drivers for.
I will attach the list, but it is a work in progress
Support over on SlateDroid
I am currently working with the T100 series, I don't think we should push any higher than GB for these tablets, seeing as how they run a max of 600MHZ. My friend developer was able to get the Ainol Novo 4.0 running on it, but he said it was far beyond usable. I am trying to get him to pass me the information that he had compiled into it so I can continue support of the device. I think I have a work around for Flash, and other specs... but I am waiting for my device to be returned to me since I had to RMA it due to bricking. I will post a thread over on SlateDroid and you can follow progress there. Once I get a functional rom that boots I will then post here at XDA. I am aiming to Odex since that will add speed, and debloat along with Market support. 2.2 will be the first release and once I can get that compiled 2.3 will happen. I will continue to play around with the idea of ICS, but once again due to low power I don't think it would be truly worth it...

[Q] G Tablet Ginger 2.3.4 com.android.future.usb PLEASE

Hi everyone, For the last two weeks I have been trying to develop my own custom Gingerbread + custom view sonic kernel.
Today I finally have them packaged into a update.zip file but it wont install due to status 6. Sadly I really have no clue if thats the last part I need to over come before I can install, or perhaps there is more than just that issue since the only tutorial I could find were dated / incorrect / incomplete / or written by someone who ate pain chips as a child.
So Really all I want is Gingerbread with com.android.future.usb.Accessory / Manager
AND (this is important also)
I also need the Viewsonic kernel to support the Prolific driver 2303 (this is in the menuconfig so it should be easy to add).
In addition, if anyone could please point me to resources when I can accurately learn how to build the OS / Kernel / update.zip file that would be wonderful. My head hurts so badly from reading all these broken english posts where the scrip examples are riddled with typos.
Oh also two weeks ago was the first time I ever saw Ubuntu (thats what im currently working on as well).
Thank you and sorry for the aggravated post but I seriously need help, my job is in the balance. Thanks Again
Anyone know of a rom that has these features already in them? Or perhaps a good couple of tutorials that will allow me to create my own? I dont want anything fancy just plain vanilla.

this is the thread i used to get me started compiling a module for pershoots kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916198
obviously run your own menuconfig somewhere in there (i think its in one of the steps) and turn on whatever you want. Also save the modules that you create as the default pershoot ones wont insert into your custom module at that point
[edit] there is a thread in the gtablet devel section for pershoots latest (i think 2.6.32.42) that may have this already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903505 [/edit]
Thanks for the links. I was able to pull the config file from Ginger 2.3.4 and it seems to have the required driver for the prolific usb to serial converter, although when I write a usb detection program and attempt to load it onto the tablet, well I get a missing shared library com.android.future.usb.
So now thats kind of odd because its 2.3.4 and Google specifically says it supports the library I need. So I guess what Im asking is there any Ginger or even honeycomb OS for the Gtablet that supports this?
Once again Thanks for a point in the correct direction.
Is there anyone I can communicate with directly in creating this? Ill be more than willing to donate my work so that it could be built upon. I just can not believe that this has not been added in yet.
Ive pushed android.hardware.usb.accessory.xml to /etc/permissions
and ive pushed the com.android.future.usb.accessory.jar to /system.framework
This seems to do absolutely nothing. Does anyone have a version with the USB accessory working for the G tablet? Or could anyone Communicate with me directly perhaps by IM? Thank you very much again.
So after some tweeking I can now get my program that requires com.android.future.usb.accessory although thats all it does. It wont detect the USB or use any USB features. Im sure im programing it wrong, although It detects USB drives and keyboards and such it will not detect my USB to serial Prolific cable.
Im trying to compile the kernel and install it but really, nothing works... Im typing commands I dont know what they mean, and i get responses like "Permission denied" so I use sudo on the command and get "not a valid command". So I didnt have permission at first, then once I did it wasnt a valid command? No wonder why ****ty old windows stomped ubuntu into the ground... I feel windows phone will destroy google if its this hard to develop a single app that I have on the IPHONE / WINDOWS PHONE / WINDOWS 7 but cant get it on android... WTF
Im just wondering how you successfully compile Gingerbread 2.3.4 and Leave out part of the MAJOR update. Why not just use 2.3.3?
Anyway Ive personally fixed that, although when i pull the kernel it shows the prolific driver is installed but there is no detection when I plug the cable in.. Nothing nadda. just like the replies to this post. Im guessing people dont have any problems at all with all the really bad tutorials out there and the lack of support even on this, a developer site, I cant even ask questions to the developers because I dont even have 10 posts yet. Also it just seems like the only thing people on this site is Over Clocking. It done matter if its a peice of ****, as long as its over clocked, Or some of the roms I installed and they are SO bad, but man they are over clocked... Or the roms that say they are 2.3.4 and happen to be 2.3.3. Or the ones that just wont install. How has android made it this far, its actually pretty bad, but then again im sure Im the only human with these problems, because I really cant find anything on the Internet after a good long while. I tough myself enough law to win a law suit against a company with high priced lawyers in less time than this is taking... And im no good at law at all.

[Q] New Big Lots Uniden UTAB71 questions

They are pretty crappy. A8, 512MB, 4GB, but only $59 on sale right now. I was able to side load Yahoo Messenger & Plugin, and Titanium backup. Does this mean it's already unlocked? Oh, and it came with Google Play installed. They take a 32GB SDHC just fine, but no HDMI. I also bought a FUBU Nabi awesome sauce thing for my kids. Can I backup the kids apps on the Nabi with Titanium to ext SD, then just restore them to the Uniden? My main question is, Is this thing already unlocked? Sorry for the Noobness. I learned to root the Nabi and sideload stuff in a couple hours on the Nabi, but still a noob..

BUMP
Sorry if it was wrong to bump, I believe it said it was okay to do so once every 24 hours.
I have the same device and I'm curious, I tried the z4root app, and I got no results. I installed superuser and nothing happened, or nothing seemed to happen, that would be awesome if it was already unlocked!
NOTE: When I opened the z4root app, it never said root/unroot, it looked like it said re-root/unroot, ao I'm guessing it might already be unlocked, but I'm having the hardest time finding out.
Does anyone happen to know?
Uniden UTAB71
My UTAB71 didn't come with Google Play store preloaded, and there wasn't an option to obtain it from the list of approved app stores you could download by clicking the 'Download App Stores' icon on the default launcher. I also tried installing it from the APK I downloaded from Android Police (w w w dot androidpolice.com/2012/11/02/download-latest-google-play-store-3-9-17/) to no avail.
I had previously purchased a 7" D2 pad from Big Lots and used a package I found on AndroidTablets.net (w w w dot androidtablets.net/forum/allwinner-a10-based/47980-can-anyone-help-me-2.html) to put Google play store on it, and this package also worked for the UTAB71. Look at the first post on the page (it's by user Erron and a link to his skydrive includes the necessary files).
This tablet is already rooted.
I haven't been able to find anything online concerning this tablet...not even from Uniden's or SouthernTeleCom's websites. I will use this thread for the time being for any updates I come across while toying with this device.
So far, I'm pretty satisfied...if I can have GO launcher and video chat via skype for $60, that's a win in my book. The tablet is relatively quick for only having a 1Ghz processor and 512MB ram. I haven't noticed any lag yet and seems as fast as the 1.2Ghz 1GB ram D2 pad I had purchased before.
EDIT1: I found the hidden support section for Uniden on Southern Telecom's website:
southerntelecom.com/unidentabletsupport/ although it doesn't have any info pertaining to the UTAB71...just a device called the UTAB430. I expect this is where we will find firmware updates, etc in the future.
I'm not sure what rooted means anymore. I know what root is on Linux, but... This let me install ES Explorer from exsd. I put 10GB of kids avi/mp4 videos on it and it plays them all fine. I guess if I can install anything I want from exsd I don't care if it's rooted. It is fast enough. It has a nice screen when playing hi-rez animated movies.
- Joe
I'm glad to hear that it is already rooted.
This makes me confused as to why superuser and other rooted apps would not properly operate. They got errors when trying to request superuser root permissions or something, i couldn't get error codes, just crashes...
I like it, its pretty quick, I however am trying to overclock it and so far no success.
Nothing drastic, just bumping it up to maybe 1.2 GHz at most.
Enough to stop the minor lags I encounter once in a blue moon...
Maybe Bumping the SD speed as well...
Its a nifty tablet, Very helpful in college. Since I got it, I don't have to lug around my ASUS 17" gaming laptop with all its mods, OC, and power chord anymore. Takes a load off my back. lol
Sorry if it looks like I'm hijacking this, I'm not. This thread seems relevant. And I'm thinking the OP might need this info as well, might come in handy for him in the future, idk...

Refer to my post #3. The method I used for putting gapps on mine is listed. Download the files from that guy's skydrive, run the runme.bat in the root/recover folder. Make sure to read the readme for specifics, but it worked fine for me.

I got one today and it's pretty decent. Anyone find out anything new?
Thanks for those instructions, I was able to get Play Store loaded on.
btw, out of the box the kernel allows for OC'ing.. I used ROM Toolbox Pro to OC to 1.2ghz. Anything higher made the tablet lock up, but ymmv.
The tablet is surpisingly quite responsive @1.2 ghz with Apex Launcher.
not to sound too nooby, but is there a way to connect this to a monitor?
I'm getting one of these, I will be experimenting with it alot, getting what I like to work =P
I was able to install Anroid Market / Google Play just fine using article on the-digital-reader.com
So far this is working fine for my uses, using Sign my Pad, to sign PDF work orders, and keep pdf service manuals at hand, testing wifi signals etc

A friend of mine just got one of these, and I put the Google Market on it, but it did not update to Play for some reason. Anyway, he had not set up any passwords on it, but after it went into sleep mode on him this morning, it came back wanting a password to access it. Well since he had never set it up, the password was unknown. He brought it to me this afternoon, because I hack a lot on Android devices. I was not able to get it to reset using the hard button on the side. It still always booted wanting a login password.
I tried getting it into recovery, but was never able to. There are only 2 buttons on the device, power and home. Does anybody have any idea how to get this tablet into recovery mode?
thx,

Did you guys try 0000 or 1234? I'd also suggest calling the company
I don't know how to get it into recovery.
I've been searching myself.
I however found a way to confirm this device is rooted. There is am app called "Root Checker"
In any app store, download that app, it should be free.
Anyways, I clicked to confirm if it was rooted, and it says it is already rooted.
Under my kernel version it says [email protected] #56 or something like that, so I'm assuming it was rooted and something to do with ubuntu...
Anyways, I've installed a terminal IDE app, and typed SU, shows # which I believe also means rooted.
--------------------------
Now that it is rooted, I've forgotten all my great ideas for changes and things to do that only rooted phones can do. Kinda sad. lol
But I will start looking for manual overclocking modification methods.
As I have not yet found any overclocking applications that support this devices hardware...
I like it a lot, runs flawlessly, and smooth, except for the ocassional lag on the internet browser, I'm thinking a small 0.1-0.2 GHz bump will do the trick.

Are you using the stock built in pre-loaded email app?
I couldn't say, I havent used it yet.
I do believe the device has the ability to copy and paste text, and that it also has a contacts list feature that you can edit the emails into.
However I don't know if they work together...
I use the gMail app. It and my gMail account seem to remember email addresses...
---------------------------------------------
I have been using SetCPU app from my phone in my android tablet, so far it has beem working fine.
The stock CPU speed is 1.001 GHz on this tablet.
So far I am running overclocked 1.2 GHz and it has been stable all day. Battery life seems to be the same.
It does get somewhat warm on the back of the device by the power button, but nothing drastic or alarming.
Remember: Overclocking is your choice and your actions alone, it can be fatal to the device if done incorrectly.
If anyone finds anything about these devices, I hope it gets posted here.
Maybe if we are lucky enough, because enough of us have these tablets, we will get our own device category and general forum for info and questions...
I forgot what else I was going to say... Other than I might look into the 4.1 Android updates and whatever comes next for android, and I will see if I can backup my current device files, OS, Kernal, etc and upgrade it.
But for now, I'm starting slow and working on finding more info. Anyone else getting any progress?
--------------------------------------
NOTE: Sorry this thread got hijacked into this. It sort-of because the Uniden tablet Know-it-all and what not spot of questions and answers.
I will stop if the OP and/or others decide it is nessisary.
If thats the case, I'd stop and then make a dedicated thread to this device and link this thread and my other question thread to that thread as "Relevant info"...

.

It seems that contributing to LOS building ROM is not anymore tolerated, this post is deleted.
Maybe @Scavenger87 wants to take a look here ;-)
I guess it's better to have an own dedicated thread.
Thanks for setting up a distinct thread. Things were getting confusing!

Hey John great idea with opening a new Thread because i also think its really confusing already

@Scavenger87: Steel01 advised to let 15.1 (I think he is right because it's too old and because lot of changes have been done between 15.1-16.0)
Also have found this during LOS 16.0 debugging and when application is crashing:
Starting from Android 9, LMK can be implemented in userspace and needs new optimization settings:
Low Memory Killer Daemon | Android Open Source Project
source.android.com
Will see if this new userspace LMKD can be tuned.
@Trevor_g: can't say... I don't have an Nvidia controller to test.

Ok yeah i think he's right for multiple reasons
- 15.1 had still unsolved issues aside of broken omx like the crashing nv games app and not working screen mirroring which is working so far on 16.0
- 16.0 is Android 9.0 based which is the same as the actual Software for the Shield TV. That means there is maybe a chance they can use some Codes or even Apps like the Shield Accessories to makes things like the First Controller working again over WIFI.
I even found a lot Nvidia OEM Apps here on APK Mirror : https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/nvidia/
I think i start testing around with those apks as soon i installed the lasted 16.0 build
@Trevor_g
For your question i have to check that again on 16.0 with the old Controller but i think its still only working over a OTG Adapter.
Like i mentioned above maybe the Shield TV Accessories App is working.

Someone even mentioned this Linux Driver for the Controller
But to be honest dont suspect too much on lets say all this bonus functions because first the LOS Team have to work on the base build to make it stable and running right
Ok i installed the latest build (4/1/21) yesterday on my LTE Tablet over sideload because i had no extra SD Card to format it to FAT32 and with the new TWRP 3.5-9.0.
I installed also the Pico Gapps and then TWRP said when i was about to Restart that there's now OS installed.
But thats seems to be a bug with TWRP itself because after the restart there was the LineageOS screen waiting for me and after a freeze for about a minute or two i was able to complete my installation.
After this i now can say its the most stable LOS 9.0 Rom so far !
It has very less apps crashing so far i only had to start them twice sometimes and also the hw acceleration working now most of its time at Chrome and on the Youtube App.
I can really see there has going again a lot of work into this Rom and its really a pleasure now to see how it get more stable everytime.
Big thanks to @Steel01, @npjohnson, the whole LineageOS Team and of course to @john_matrix
Btw @john_matrix did you change anything on the partitions you mentioned earlier on this build ?
@Trevor_g
I did a short test yesterday with the controller and as suspected it doesnt recognize by the tablet. I soon test out those Android 9.0 based Accessories App from the Shield TV
Thank you for the rom
Can I just flash this over Lineage 14.1 or do I need a factory wipe?
Did anybody test gamepass streaming yet?

Yes you have to wipe the device first in TWRP to install this rom.
Maybe a little general guide for everyone here who want to try this build in this early state and help tracking bugs
For an clean Installation its important to wipe the device first with TWRP like shown on the first Screenshot.
After this go to Advanced and choose everything choosen on the second Screenshot.
Now you shutdown the Tablet and insert the SD Card or plug in the cable for sideloading.
After turning on the Tablet and choose Recovery Mode again, first install the Rom of course then choose Wipe cache/dalvik.
Now you have to install Gapps if you want to use it. Its recommend to use only the Pico Package.
Wipe cache/dalvik again and restart the device.
If you use Sideload it might says in the Shutdown Menu :
No OS installed !
Which is a bug in my opinion of the new TWRP 3.5-9.0 Package but please use this Version of TWRP in any case that the basement of the installation is everywhere the same !
This is IMHO the way to install a Rom in a clean way and helps tracking down bugs better when everyone used the same methodes.
@john_matrix
I installed the Rom today on a K1 16GB with the methode i described above and did it with my regular SDCard i use in all my Tablets. In comparsion to installing over sideload it didnt get the No OS installed! message at TWRP and i didnt had that 1 minute freeze at begin of the install-wizzard after the LOS Logo.
Also the Rom seems to be same stable as the one on the 32GB model.
But i have to test it a bit more side by side to make valid statements
Also Nvidia Games working nice as you can see on the Screenshots
Hi guys, so, long story short i got scammed on a dutch advertising portal and ended up with one of them shield tablets which were recalled a few years ago. Yep, those with the defective battery that may burst in flame one day
Anyways, i figured that since it hasnt happened until now, i might just be lucky and give it a shot.
Its great to see that there is still some active development of this device! flashed this rom and i gotta say im positively surprised. Its running nice and smooth and even though it crashed on me a few times after the first boot, but a few reboots later and its running like a charm! i didnt bother with gapps, root or anything yet though. really great job devs!

My tablet was completely wiped with no OS so I just pushed the ROM, pico gapps, and magisk over USB onto internal storage with MTP/TWRP. Flashed it all from there and it worked fine. No issues or errors. I don't think it's at all necessary to sideload to use an external SD.

In this Thread beginning from here i share my informations so far about the two type of batteries and changing them out if you interested:
Finding Replacement Battery in 2017?
Anybody know where to find a battery that will fit in the Shield Tablet? I know there are several threads online (here on xda, on GeForce forums, and other places) that discuss replacing the shield tablet battery and a few different part numbers...

I did these two type installation because @john_matrix mentioned to use a SD Card which is formated with FAT32 instead of exFAT. I didnt had one lying around so i used sideload this time.
Thank you everyone and Scavenger87 for your feedback! ;-)
About stability, I guess the culprit is the fact I have played with the new userspace LMK but for me it's not stable enough to be used as daily.
For example, Youtube often continue to play videos greeny and blocky and this is annoying
I will try to fine tune the best settings for LMK.
About battery, I have changed mine too with this one:
https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/32807531204.html
It works good but require to use the board of the original battery.
Seems to be going well so far for me, battery life seems good and for the general use I have had time to do it's worked well.
One crash that caused a reboot, after testing the hdmi output the tablet rebooted when I unplugged the hdmi cable from the tablet.

Ok that means there is still some kind of memory leak problem with our tablets or is the memory managment on android 9 and higher not really suited for our low ram devices ?
I also read something about drawbacks with the in-kernel LMK as you can see here :
Drawbacks of in-kernel LMK driver
Android deprecates the LMK driver due to a number of issues, including:
Low-RAM devices had to be tuned aggressively, and even then would perform poorly on workloads with large file-backed active pagecache. The poor performance resulted in thrashing and no kills.
The LMK kernel driver relied on free-memory limits, with no scaling based on the memory pressure.
Because of the rigidity of the design, partners often customized the driver so that it would work on their devices.
The LMK driver hooked into the slab shrinker API, which wasn't designed for heavy operations such as searching for targets and killing them, which slowed down the vmscan process.
Is the zRam function now activated by standart on Android 9 and higher to compress amount memory is needed ?
I try to stresstest it today with a website that have a lot pictures sadly i cant use instagram anymore because you need a account now
Shield Tablet can't be considered as a "low ram device" as Google defined them with up to 512MB (Android Go?)
Android Performance Optimization | Android Open Source Project
source.android.com
I also have devices with 2GB that are currently performing Lineage 17.1 very well (Sony Z3C and Nexus 4)
I don't know if zRAM is activated by default in Android but you still have the choice to activate it or no (in the kernel or in the fstab.
Additionnally, I don't know what is the policy to activate zRAM (my Mi9 have 6GB RAM and have zRAM activated by Xiaomi so...)
Another thing about zRAM is there are lot and lot of options you can activate such as compression, lz4, clear caching, etc... depending of your needs and I am not skilled enough to say exactly what will be the consequences of these options (but it cost nothing to try).
You also have to keep in mind that zRAM will consume more CPU times (as KSM).
Similarly, you can fine tune the CPU governor and IO scheduling (often I see CFQ by default but on the other way I have saw that Noop and Deadline gives best results).
Feel free to share your experience and if you have other ideas on what you would like to integrate in this ROM (as the best possible).
You are right to stress test the OS, you can also debug the memory and the weight attributed on the processes.
Ok but 2GB is really not much these day also this article from android source is really old i think i read there something about kitkat or so
But your right i also was suprised to see that my xperia z3 compact i have lying around is able to run lineageos 17.1 and even is supported by the LOS Team
Which leads me to the question is the memory managment on the Qualcomm SOC so much better ? Ok the Ram there is on the SOC itself instead of external like on our Tegra based devices.
I think i install tonight Triodexes 15.1 with zram to compare the effect it has.
I also noticed the hw acceleration crashes the most on the firefox browser like i told in the 15.1 Thread you can start one video and it runs if you leave everything untouched but your not able to start a second one even with autoplay.
Btw about the LMK i know its maybe a dumb question but did you try the original settings from the Oem Rom ?
Edit : The original values in minfree are: 18432,23040,27648,32256,36864,46080
And zRam is already activated on the LOS 16.0 Build with 511MB same like the oem rom

Thanks SO much for looking into this for me! You mentioned later that the controller wasn't recognized by the tablet, however I'm also curious if the Accessories app from the ShieldTV might help. Thanks again, in advance!
Fwiw, there's a bunch of framework patches needed for the wifi direct controller to work. I've yet to get them all straight. Haven't had that working since cm-12.1. See the incomplete set for 16.0 here:
https://review.lineageos.org/q/topic:shield-blake-p
That's on top of:
https://review.lineageos.org/q/topic:nvidia-shieldtech-p
And there's no nvidia pairing app that works with a touch interface. It's a mess atm. I did get blake to pair to foster on 15.1, but only while the pairing wizard was open. As soon as I hit back to close it, the autonomous group goes down and the connection is lost. And now, it's close to impossible since nvidia didn't release the nvwifi prebuilt jar to link against. And the one from O doesn't work on P.
Hi @Steel01
Thank you for keeping us updated on your work with the controller and also for your work for this device in general
I already tought its not easy to bring wifi support back for the old controller but i think also there is no high priority since the second gen is working fine over bluetooth and they already cheap to buy used.
Other than this the rom is suprisingly good running for this early stage and most of the stuff is working
Is there something that needs special attention for testing at the moment to help you developing ?
Like i mentioned in a other Thread i have every generation of the Shield Tablet and Controller. Only on my LTE Modell the SIM Card Reader is unfixable broken
But i still hunting for a fully working device.

Well i dont know if its really needed to wipe the internal storage but i think by the reason we testing here a new Rom in a really early stage we should give it the cleanest basement as possible to exclude problems that might caused by left over data that interference with the Rom
