DriveDroid allows you to boot your PC from ISO/IMG files stored on your phone. This is ideal for trying Linux distributions or always having a rescue-system on the go... without the need to burn different CDs or USB pendrives. The paid version of DriveDroid does not include ads and helps the developer.
DriveDroid also includes a convenient download menu where you can download USB-images of a number of operating systems from your phone.
You can also create USB-images which allows you to have a blank USB-drive where you can store files in. Another possibility is to use tools on your PC to make a bootable USB-drive out of the blank image that DriveDroid created.

If you are missing a certain distribution or want more images available in the download list, you can add download repositories. At the moment I have made a repository for Distrowatch. These images are not officially supported, so they might not work for CD or USB booting.

USB Mass Storage (UMS)
DriveDroid relies on the kernel of Android, in particular the USB Mass Storage (UMS) feature. It allows your phone to act as an USB-drive and have a device (SDcard) or file (ISO/IMG) be used as the content for that emulated drive.
Different Android devices implement this feature differently. Most modern devices do not have UMS enabled by default, but it is supported by the kernel. I've added a option to DriveDroid to change the USB-mode for devices that do not support UMS by default, but no guarantees. I'm getting very mixed reports of devices working and not.
I need all the help I can get to fix this problem. Hopefully we can figure out some method to enable UMS in a stable way.
Hybrid-ISOs
Since most phones only support emulating USB-drives, DriveDroid will not act as an CD-drive. This means that not all ISO files will work, only hybrid-ISOs and IMG files. Hybrid-ISOs are specially crafted ISOs that is used on many modern Linux-distributions. DriveDroids downloadlist contains most of the distributions I've found that do have hybrid-ISOs.
This is just to notify you that you have to convert non-hybrid ISOs by writing the ISO to the emulated USB-drive. You can get a blank emulated USB-drive by creating a blank image through DriveDroids + menu.

USB-drive and CD-drive emulation
These two modes allow your phone to act as an USB-drive or as an CD-drive. Most devices only support USB-drive emulation. Some devices only support CD-drive emulation. To get both USB-drive as well as CD-drive emulation on your phone you need a patched kernel (see below).
With USB-drive emulation it is possible to boot IMG files and most Linux-based ISO. It also allows you to write to the disk, which allows you to create data-disks as well as install an OS onto the USB drive. The downside of this mode is that some ISOs will not boot, since those ISOs are created for CD-drives.
With CD-rom emulation it is possible to boot all CD-based ISOs.
So, having both USB-drive emulation as well as CD-rom emulation is preferable.
Some roms with a range of supported devices have patch reviewing systems in place where I periodically submit patches to new devices. You can check what kernels have the right patches in their patch review system. To know which kernel your device is using, check out this list to see kernels are used by what devices.

It worked with no problem with the Samsung GS3 i9300 on WanamLite JB MB5 v6.2 with Wanam's Adam kernel v1.2 (I don't really know what Wanam cooked there but it works fine) that is MTP/PTP. Note that when DriveDroid's UMS is enabled, both check-boxes in the regular S3 USB panel have no marks (can normaly have only one checked, never none unchecked).
Other people may please confirm if it works on Galaxy S3 i9300 with stock or other custom kernels.
Less surprisingly, it works fine with Samsung GS2 i9100 on (WanamLite JB LSE v14.3) since it always had Mass Storage Transfer, afaik (but I'm not sure), actually on Wanam's v14.3 it has.
Working on pure CD format (like Daemon Tools for Windows or any Virtual CD mount system) would be top notch —TonyHoyle has cooked a kernel patch to enable virtual CD support, there's an idea to dig, Apple dmg should follow.
But for the moment with what is given, creating own disc ISO to fill with whatever you need later on a computer, is really fine. Polishing the angle to reach v1.0.

CD-Rom Support in Existing Kernels

I'm using this on my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Omega Rom 43.x and the USB Drive support works great, once I turned off USB Debugging.
Does anyone know if any of the current Kernels for the Samsung Galaxy S3 have the required patches for the CD-rom support as I would also like to boot a couple of CD's from my phone.

Download slitaz from within the app
Select slitaz iso.
Select S3C1 and F Mass Storage 1
Also enable Usb storage.
Disable ADB (Android Debugging)
Reboot system.
Do the thing with your boot procedure.
And voila, (I hope)

Yes, check whether the image has a partition table usually gives a very accurate indication that the disk is hybrid. To do this (under Linux) use the command:

$ fdisk -l myimage.iso
It'll show some info about the disk, but also a partition (usually that partition is marked as being NTFS/FAT, but I think that is part of the trick to make it work on both CD and disk). If it shows no partitions at all you know it probably isn't a hybrid disk.

For Linux distributions that are build on a recent version on syslinux you can use the tool 'isohybrid' like this:

$ isohybrid myimage.iso
It'll convert the iso so that it is hybrid. For all other ISOs (that are not build on syslinux) you can you the methods described for that OS to burn it to a USB drive. First create an image in DriveDroid, select the image so that it shows up on your PC as a USB disk, next use the OS-specific tools to burn the iso to the (emulated) disk. It'll be stored on the IMG you made.
You can try this on the official ISO of SliTaz 4 (so not the image form DriveDroids downloadlist). The devs forgot to make version 4 of their OS hybrid, but it does rely on syslinux, so it's possible to convert it using isohybrid. I've done this and put the converted ISO on my server, so that the hybrid-ISO is available in the downloadlist (I've only done this for SliTaz because it is so small and awesome).
If you see that a distro is convertable with isohybrid you should contact those devs. Some of them do not realize that this option is available or what the advantage is. When they distribute their ISO as a hybrid one I can put their distro on DriveDroids downloadlist too.

Ah, well, DriveDroid should show a CD icon next to the USB and locked-USB icons when selecting an image. At the moment only CyanogenMod nightly builds for the i9000 (kernel is named android_kernel_samsung_aries)

Question to all: if you have applied the patches on their kernel, please post it here so others can try it. As far as I know no-one has put such a kernel/rom online yet, except for CyanogenMod nightly for the Samsung Galaxy S.

Add "Disable ADB (Android Debugging)" to those instructions. It seems that's the final thing I need to add to DriveDroid to make it work for a lot of people. I've had several reports some Nexus devices stopped working because I fixed DriveDroid to allow ADB (previous versions just disabled ADB without consent). Some devices work with ADB running too (like my phone), but some just won't boot (although they do show up as USB devices on their OS).

Thank you for the app! I always felt my phone should be able to replace the USB sticks I have laying around. I saw the article on Lifehacker about DriveDroid and had to have it. And while I've been unsuccessful getting it to work on my GNex or my OG Droid, I've still purchased the app because of the way you're handling yourself on the forums. You're responsive, friendly, and I hope you can continue to be so when your app explodes in popularity even further. :good:
And it always helps having assistance from the XDA community.
Edit: It may also be debugging is my problem since that's on both of my phones and I just now read that could be causing issues.

Hah, indeed I see. Cool to see that it already was in there. I guess more rom-devs use CyanogenMod's patches. Now we'll just have to wait for a release so that more people will be able to use the CDrom feature and we'll have some more real-world testing.

I've forked and patched boeffla's kernel for GS3 compiled and now I can boot CD's and USB sticks from my phone. Not bad for my first attempt with a kernel.
Being new to github how do I post the patches for boeffla to merge with his kernel? As his kernel is based on Samsung Stock Kernel, is there a Github somewhere that all GS3 Dev's use that I could post the patches too?
I'll post an odin tar file for anyone who wants to try it when I get into work later.

I think it's possible to apply the patch to CM7 as-is (without conflicts), but I don't know for sure. The changes aren't that big and are applied to kernel code that shouldn't be changed much. However some device manufacturers do think it's needed to change the code in there, so I can never be sure .

Nice job. Well, I've been looking for something like this too. But I think Samsung just 'publishes' their kernel source as tars somewhere. No way to have input it seems. Where you want to apply this patch is at boeffla, CyanogenMod or Google. Since Samsung is basing their kernel on Google's (at least I think so), I think the ultimate goal is to let the patches be accepted by Google. I've looked at the process of doing this, but it involves quite some people. I first want to make sure these patches are tested on a number of devices (by applying the patches to popular custom roms first).

Fork one of his kernels (I'm not sure which one you're using), so that you have your own repository of his code. Now you can pull from your repository, apply the patch, commit and push to your repository (with git). Once pushed you can do a 'pull request' through github on the webpage of your repository. I'm used to run stock kernel or since his last firmware update, Wanam's Adam kernel that runs fine, except the author is not eager to mod the kernel too much --in his perspective to give us John "half-geek" Doe the best without too many settings hassle, it's perfectly understandable.
But this idea of hosting and launching real ISO is very exciting.

I used the latest kernel from his website / github, it was 2.9 I was already using it as my kernel.
Okay so I've bought a samsung galaxy chat B5330 device back in feb'2013. Don't ask me why cause I conciously bought it. So I realised after searching for 6 months that there is no interest of developers in this device. so I have taken up the initiative to 1) Build CM 10, 2) Port CWM, 3) Root the device myself. However I don't have much idea about building android. I've rooted and flashed Custom recovery n ROMs to my dad's phone before and I'm a geek so I learn things quickly about computers n phones. So I'm nor a complete newbie neither a Master developer. Therefore I need help of those devlopers who will be kind enough not to discourage me. Anyone can root a device which is more popular because it gets vulnarable too quickly so there is no point in telling me that "you should have bought a device which has developer support". I am interested to be a developer myself n that challenge is really so tempting to me. So here are my questions which I don't have exact idea about.
1) I have a computer of the config -> AMD fx 6100 hexacore buldozer 3.3 GHz/4 GB RAM/500 GB HDD/Windows7(32) & Ubnuntu 13.04(64). Can I do the job of building roms from the source with this config in the first place?
2) Does galaxy chat B5330 support 'fastboot'? if yes then How can I boot into fastboot mode? I've tried with adb 'reboot-bootloader' but the device just restarted normally. So I don't know How can I get into the fastboot mode?
3) CM developers are really kind enough that they have put alot effort into making the wiki. I've got precious informations about building android from source and all. But I have a confusion. There was mentioned fastboot is necessery for building CM. So if my phone does not have fastboot should it mean that I can't build CM for my device at all?
4) How much data do I have to download? Do I need to be connected to the internet always while editing local file? n If I use 'repo sync' to update the code always won't my editings get overwritten by stock code again?
so these are few basic questions I have for now. I know I might not get any response at all. But there's no harm in trying. thanks

The best way to start is to use another Rom as base (get permission first) then start tweaking it with scripts, apps and build.prop tweaks. Once you start to get familiar with the basics, start experimenting with different tweaks. Since you are going to create a Cyanogenmod 10 Rom from scratch, I give you best of luck and hope many people will use it!

I'm currently working on it. It still does not support audio/bluetooth/wifi/phone/usb nothing. It just supports full touch n can run games. You can't use it for calls/internet! I just sideloaded few apk files via adb. So it ran them smoothly. N don't call me sir please. I hate formalities.. just chill

I'm currently working on it. It still does not support audio/bluetooth/wifi/phone/usb nothing. It just supports full touch n can run games. You can't use it for calls/internet! I just sideloaded few apk files via adb. So it ran them smoothly. N don't call me sir please. I hate formalities.. just chill

Sure ask whatever you need. But I suggest you do thorough research n a lot of forum searching before you ask anything. I've been digging for 1 year collecting info n learning things.

Today my wife got this device as a gift for Christmas. She asked me to look at it and set it up for her. After about an hour of research I was deeply disappointed by the fact that this device has no ROMs or Kernels and barely supports ROOT. The device is kind of slow for 2013 due to its one core 1GHz processor. But I am sure this issue would be fixed with optimizations from custom ROMs and Kernels. I myself am not an android developer but do some coding in the free time and worked on a few ports of sense for several devices. On this thread I would like to get as many developers possible with the Asus MeMO Pad to communicate and collaborate to develop a working port of CyanogenMod for the device. I will be happy to help anyone interested in this project by doing some work in the free time. I chose CyanogenMod as it is probably the easiest one to compile and is much simpler than its competitors. If we get a successful build of CM then we can move on to developing Kernels and more complex versions of Android. Keep in mind that this is not a request for any particular developer but just an invitation to collaborate and build a working ROM for this tablet. If you are interested in working with me on this project please PM me or comment down below. I will be glad to help as much as I can. Thank you to all of the developers that would be willing to participate in this project.

How are you skills to decompile img ?? since the guy who did root before is no more...and we should start by doing root for latest FW.
and CWM is also very buggy (build using online kitchen)

I'm the guy that made CWM for this tablet, as well as the one on whos idea the whole root thing is based I'm very glad that someone picked up work on this tablet and is trying to make it better, since I don't have the time and I've lost my patience since ASUS is refusing to co-operate as far as updates and source codes are concerned. Hmm that's the kernel source code, we already have that Though it was in a bit of a strange format, plus I firmly believe that it's outdated as I think ASUS made some changes in the kernels via OTA. Thanks for your tip though,it's good to see that someone's trying to do with this pad

I have a AMD Athlon Dualcore 5000B 2,60 GHz with 4 GB RAM
And my 500gb drive died yesterday so I have to buy myself a new drive first
Hi i have recently purchased a Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and am looking into building a Deodex Rom for the device.
The issue is i have not been able to find anywhere on the forum a custom recovery of any kind for this device. I have tried a few versions for other devices such as the Tab3 8.0 and Tab4 7.0 but each time i could not boot into recovery, brought me back to download mode.
My main question and concern is lack of support for this device and i would like to start contributing.
Is there a CWM or TWRP for the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (T330NU)?
If not how can we get one started?
Really want to finish making my custom rom, have all my files Deodexed and ready to go.

Seeing as how our tablet has the Snapdragon 400 chipset, same as in some popular Motorola phones and the like, there is pre-existing development that could benefit us, not to mention the relative ease of Qualcomm developing.

I'm just wondering tho it's a bit off topic but only for a brief moment. I have deodexed files I want to replace from the stock Samsung Rom.
My question is do you know any good programs for extracting and recompiling a stock Rom for recovery install after I have modded and replaced files?
Would prefer to compile the Rom on the computer and have the option to make changes and compile a Rom on the phone/tablet itself. As I said I know this is slightly off topic from the recovery but on the other hand after recovery comes the roms and tweaks. I have a file on standby to deodex stock Rom for t330nu.i have been doing research on programs and ways to do it just figured could get a quick tip or flash of insight.

Just want to check in. Still nothing for us yet. I don't want to push the guys since they are doing this purely as favors since they don't have the devices. I am keeping in touch with them however. Also I pmd @Dees_Troy but haven't heard back there either. One of my buddy's is a friend of his and said he usually won't make a recovery for a device he doesn't have but if a recovery is made and proven working, he will make it official which means more support.

I will also be making a fork off their project to try and specialize in the S 5 hardware instead of nexus.

Forgive my ignorance, but just so I'm clear. Are you talking about making the individual apps available or porting the entire ROM over to the S5. If it's the entire ROM, I wouldn't think that the retail version of the Verizon S5 would be able to run it due to the locked bootloader, however the Developer's Edition may be able to. I think it's a pretty awesome idea, I've got Kali installed on a live Flash Drive that I use occasionally, and in fact, I think I still have an old version of BackTrack installed on an old laptop that's laying around. I've never used it as a main computer and only booted up to it when I had a specific need (or just had free time and wanted to sniff around to see what I could find), I mostly use it at work to try to test security features from time to time.
I'll have to read up on project nethunter but are people using it as a daily driver?

You are correct I would be talking about porting the actual entire project over to run on samsung devices. It already has limited samsung supoprt, it would be a matter of testing it and tuning it, testing it and tuning it, right now I currently have an s5 running Liquid Smooth 4.4.4 with Kali Linux as well as Lolli 5.0.1 with kali, and yes there are some errors and it needs to be modified but if there is enough interest I would have no problem branching off and working on this.

Sounds good, but sadly I won't be able to take advantage of it until someone is able to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon retail model. If you post this in the General S5 thread instead of the Verizon one (you may have, I didn't check), you'll probably get more of a response. Good luck!
On a side note, I downloaded one of the Nexus nethunter Roms and see there are some apk's, a nethunter.apk in particular but I'm guessing these are bound pretty tightly to the kernel and it would be foolish to install it on a ROM other than Kali, is that about right?

Just so you know, I am building these in linux but I am using them on my verizon stock samsung s5, I have made 4 builds so far, 2 which you flash over 4.4.4 or 5.x and then 2 that include the verizon Roms 4.4.4 and 5.1 with the nethunter project included. I don't have an "unlocked bootloader" as far as I know, and it is working for me.

Just so you know, I am building these in linux but I am using them on my verizon stock samsung s5, I have made 4 builds so far, 2 which you flash over 4.4.4 or 5.x and then 2 that include the verizon Roms 4.4.4 and 5.1 with the nethunter project included. I don't have an "unlocked bootloader" as far as I know, and it is working for me.

So ur saying ur flashing them with safestrap? If not then ur using twarp or cmw recovery an u would have a unlocked bootloader..just checking...even tho not sure what this 2 projects r got links to there sits?

Whhaaaatttttt, are you sure? You mentioned earlier that you running LiquidSmooth and as far as I know you must have an unlocked bootloader to install anything other than a TouchWiz based, Samsung signed Rom. If there's a method around this, please, do tell, but I'd guess you must have a different variant than the retail VZW S5. Does your model number read SM-G900V?
At any rate, if you running nethunter inside of a verizon ROM, I'd be interested in taking a look at it.

I amsure that I do not have an unlocked bootloader, I am going to take a picture of it right now, but just because a rom usually uses the aroma installer doesnt meaen you cant rebuild and change it. yes right now I can upload files for people to test, phone and everything works and this is basically ow it is going to work.
1. I can post files you flash over your favorite 4.4.4 version, or your favorite lollipop version, or if we can decide on the best roms to use this with, I can build the nethunter right into that rom so it would be a single flash.
Let me get some SS's of what I am running now, I was running LS3.2 before now I dont even know, I flash my phone more often then I change my underwear and I am so dedicated to programming I forget to make it to the potty alot. So think about that.. not to much but yeah. And a thumbs up if you can relate lol.
What would you like to see screenshots of? My upload scren, my status screen or if you would just like to pick your favorite 4.4.4 rom, like bob7 deox which is crazy small and light, then I will just compile them and upload them you can try them yourself. At most I just have to save the changes for the teensy style attacks and I had to make changes to how the wireless chipset responded to a monitor type mode.
Does anyone at all disagree with me using ExtremeSyndicate_v5_Deo_BOB7.zip for the simplicity of the install and I will build the nethunter software right into the flash, so that you can test.
Can someone explain in simple terms what is going on before I get my hopes up? Bc I'm reading we are able to flash custom roms over or retail locked verizon s5s? Or just apks? If we could use custom lollipop roms that would be amazing!!!
That's not a bad ROM to build it into. That or the oc4 factory by jkruse. Don't forget to ask the Dev first....

This sounds amazing if I understand right... We will be able to use custom roms on locked verizon galaxy s5? Just make sure you use a verizon based galaxy rom, but i think the one you mentioned above is good... This sounds amazing and feedback will be incredible from the locked verizon s5 population!
Edit: screen shots would be awesome, and maybe if your about phone section and some few pics of home screen, settings, notification panel.... thanks

Ok, I have them compiled and tested on my samsung s5, seems to be working well enough for some other people to try, I will be uploading 4 different versions.
4.4.4 Rom with nethunter built in
5.x Rom with nethunter buit in
4.4.4 nethunter flashable file to flash over your favorite kitkat rom
5.x nethunter flashable file to flash over your favorite Lollipop rom

Sweet! I was confused from before but can you like "port" Liquidsmooth to this device on lollipop? Nethunter would be cool but having LS too on lollipop would be insane! Thanks

I modified the liquid smooth repo and removed the aroma installer and made changes for personal use, I will get ahold of them and ask if they would have any problems with me forking off and finalizing a lilli version for handing out, just since it isnt my code just changes I made to it i want to get their permission first.

Edit: and just to make sure, we would get all the features like the Google looking aosp notification panel pull down and all that stuff?
Also, how did you flash the rom? Through safestrap or flashfire?
