[Q] Z3 day old, battery awful - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i'm new to this fourm i just signed up moments ago basically in search of some answers, so yesterday i brought a sony experia Z3 based on their battery life, there freedom, the quad core processor etc, basically for the nice design blahdi blah. but battery was the seller for me as it was known as the ''king'' of batterys..
anyway!
When i opened my phone out the box and started it, it had around 40% battery which is fine i understand they all come out the box half way charged. But i stuck the phone on charge around 12am and took it off charge 8am for when i go to work, now throughout my day at work i used the phone to look on social media, send a few texts, i don't game on the phone nor do i watch loads of videos due to only 10GB of data, but from about 8am to 4pm i was left with 2% battery, now before this phone i had an iPhone5 which in all fairness didn't last me the whole day it would last me till around 11am if i was lucky. but i've gone through various options (stamina mode) was already enabled btw, but nothings made much difference, i've turned the brightness down to nearly halfway, i've turned location services to battery efficient but this is my statistic for 100% battery..
So! my phone has been on charged since i got in at 4pm, haven't take it off charge and i don't intend too till the morning, hoping this will sort it by giving it a longer charge. but anway! as it stands at the moment my phone is on 100% battery, the usage i will get from it is saying 3 hours.. right? ridiculous. WITH stamina mode enabled i get 9 hours, now it seems 9 hours isn't that bad but my expectations was somewhere near the 17 hour mark. both of my friends have a Z3 and they get 15+ hours without stamina mode i believe. but if anyone out there could suggest what the problem is. failing that i will return the phone and swap it for the same model. i might of possibly just ended up with a duff battery sadly..
Sorry in advanced for the long thread.

Curious. I have my Z3 for 4 months now and I can say the battery is brilliant. There are weeks when a 100% charge give me a 2 and a half day usage (with stamina mode on and 4h 30m screen time). In the worst situations (when I'm using it very heavy,5-6 hrs screen time in a day) a 100% charge last from let's say 8 am untill next moring at 10 am. Anyway look at the battery usage data and post a screenshot. Do you have the sync on/off? What android are you using?

Hi thanks for the reply, i cannot post a screenshot sadly but i can tell you the details for sure. the battery usage isn't telling me anything right now bizarrely, it says it's not available. if i remember rightly i know the screen was taking the most at 37% and the android im using i believe you're asking the software version or something? Android 5.0.2

For example this is a 2 day+ battery usage data I had 1-2 weeks ago... Try a hard reset but backup any personal and important data first.

Damn thats the usage i want to be able to get out of my battery, sadly for some reason it's not displaying anything for me it did earlier but now it won't let me see anything which is odd i must say, but from what i remember is that the screen was 37% then it was the android OS at like 7% no biggie, maybe shall i let the juice run all the way out till the phone dies then give it a full charge then see what happens maybe?

Try some full discharge-recharge cycles. I remember my battery wasn't ao great when I first bought it. But neither that bad as you... Try that and come back after if you have the same issue

Yeah i think that might be the best bet, i'll give it to the weekend before i swap the phone see if i can get the phone to adjust, but failing that i will just get it swapped as it's only a day old. kinda disappointing tho lol as i was expecting it to be awesome as yours is and it literally lasts the same as an iphone would

Info about my battery life

My battery seems to be REALLY bad. Worse than most peoples from what i gather from reading threads. I get about 8 hours from a full charge with minimal use. It seems that my screen is taking up most of the battery, according to my battery use page.... Any one else having major battery drain like I am??

My display is taking a huge percentage as well. Everything else is low percentages. Don't know why. My screen is always either on auto brightness or completely dim.

Give it a while and a few recharges. It should get better. Same thing happened to me. It's slowly getting better. I have it about a week now.

I was getting 7 to 8 hours at first, had my phone almost 2 weeks now and am now getting just under 20 hours with moderate use.
Give it time. My sensation has far better battery life compared with my DHD.

Peeps, you missed most important thing. Look at the AWAKE line. Either OP is playing a lot with th phone, or something is not letting it sleep.
Yeah, the battery really plummets when you actually use the phone (even on low brightness) but it idles quite efficiently at least...
Did u try juice defender? Just asking ify bout the sensation dnt knw either to get it or wait for sumthing else

Yeah, noticed same thing
I downloaded juice defender beta? whatever the free one was. To me that app does not have a good layout at all, either that or I was missing something. There dont seem to be any personalization settings at all. I dont trust apps to work when they just say "im doing something!!" ya know?
Now that I think about it on that charge I was playing music while I worked on my car for a while, that would explain the awake time. Even without doing that battery life is still really bad and the screen takes up 80%+. I will post another pic after my battery dies today. Dont plan on using it much so hopefully it will last longer.
That is good news about life getting better after a week or two though cause 8 hours with moderate use is unacceptable. My MT4G got a good 24 hours with pretty heavy use, I expect this thing to get at least half that.
i use juice defender and under normal use and a few hours of pandora streaming on wifi im at 35 hours at 40% battery
My phone was also drained like madness, within 6 hours it was empty, even if I didn't do anything with it. At the moment it is better, I did a factory reset through the startup of the phone (turn phone off, remove batt, place batt, hold volume down and push on/off button). There is an option to factory reset.
Strange thing was that when I turned off my phone before the factory reset, it was telling 34% batt. Right after the factory reset is was at 89% ???
I use Battery Status Bar app to display my batt in percentage...
But the good news is, my problem is now solved. Battery lasts for more than a day at normal use and 6-8 hours while very actively handeling it.
Looks like it was a reading wrong information or something...
Got 11 hours out of a battery today. So far its been charging for 4.5 hours and is at 94% charge. Takes about half as long to charge it as it does to kill it!
I will give juice defender a try. Seems like it works for a lot of people.

I had same kind of long charging last night. Battery died at about 7:30pm. I plugged it and did not turn the power on. Went to play some ice hockey and after that I turned the power on again at about 10:10pm and it was still charging. At about 11:20pm(still charging) I unplugged for a couple of seconds to see the specs of the charger and then plugged back, surprisingly percentage jumped to 100. It was still on 100 this morning at about 8:00am.
Now I found out that phones own battery monitor tells me that time on battery is roughly 8 hours But when I check the time from Battery Indicator it tells me that time on battery is roughly 15 hours, which is correct.
Seems that a lot of people are getting false battery readings, me included. I did a factory reset last night and this seemed to fix this, at least until now it seems to report correct (realistic) values. I haven't charged the battery after the reset so we will see if charging messes it up again...
I hope this is a software problem, i really don't want to exchange my phone, i don't have any of the other problems.
what sort of battery times are acceptable for this phone? many are suggesting factory resets and all i wonder if i should do it or not. if i charge the phone overnight it goes to power saver mode usually say 8-9pm and then the power saver mode (basically dim screen and no gps wifi remains on) is managing to hold the power till i go to bed and charge it. is this ok?
juice defender seems to be recommended eh? maybe one should should try that before the factory reset. btw if factory reset done whats the best way to restore your phones contacts to how they are now? i mean it took forever to link all the facebook, phone and microsoft exchange contacts and offcourse gmails. dont want to go through that again.
I tried juice defender last night and it didnt seem to help. I lost 45% overnight without me even using the phone! When I fell asleep the battery meter said 100% still and I woke up to 55%. The phone says there is some awake time, wonder what it could be? As much as I dont want to do it I think a factory restore may be an option since nothing else is really helping. Should I wait until the battery is 100% before I reset it?
Some new pics, keep in mind I was asleep for all of this use except for what the screen awake time says.

I would say you battery life isnt that bad, if it lasts a day then it sounds about right. People are saying the batteries last longer after a couple weeks or so. If you do factory reset try and connect to wifi when google is restoring your contacts and such, it makes things go a lot faster.
I managed just over 9 hours on my first charged but I'm recharging it now and it went straight up to 31% when it booted up again :S
Me and my gf both have a Sensation now(i upgraded from HTC Desire, and she a HTC Legend), we are both pleased with the battery on the phones, she uses stock Sense, and i use LauncherPro, though we did learn something from our older phones, the thing that drains battery extremely much is all the notification emails Facebook automatically send(gmail push), these are almost turned off to 100%, next thing is to turn off all syncronisation in the phone you don't use, ex. i use Launcherpro therefore i don't need the phone to update Sense's own weather, and so on.
We both normally charge the phone every night, but i guess my phone would last almost 2 days on days i don't use it that much.
I must say i am extremely satisfied with my phone, the thing that i dislike the most is the camera, or to say it in a different way, if i didn't know the SG2 had a slightly better camera i may have been more satisfied

You should not have anywhere near 100% awake time unless you're using the phone at all times. You have some app that is not shutting down or auto-updating far too often. That's your culprit - find it and your battery life will improve.

Are you like me with battery life?

I'm getting pretty good battery life on bean R2 (I easily average 20+hrs). But no matter which ROM I am on, no matter if I'm getting great or poor battery life, I always start to get on edge once I have dropped below 70%. I start to think, damn there goes battery today. I realize I still have 3/4 of my battery remaining but I just feel this anxiety that my phone is not near full charge.
I let it drain to empty a couple times a month but it becomes almost unbearable when I get down to the last 1/3 of my battery life.
Is it just me?

sounds like you need to turn off percentages. I had this problem until i turned it off. Now i have to go a few steps further to find out what it actually is and that makes me not care as much.
My battery life is HORRIBLE.
Have you tried using an app like GSam Battery Monitor?
I've been able to track down a few issues with that app, including one where I needed to wipe my cache to stop my internal sd card from being continuously scanned.
I always get over 2 hours of screen time over the course of a day. Currently using AOKP Jelly Bean, and it's still the same!

Don't drain your battery. People really need to stop thinking these are the old batteries of yesteryear. Draining your battery will cause it stress and lower it's overall life and charge over time. Draining your battery is causing exactly what you're trying to prevent. Best practice is to let it get to 15-20% and then charge.
On topic, I get anxiety about battery at around 70% too. Mostly because it seems to hit that point pretty fast, but then can last the rest of the day no problem.
Have fun with your new phone and keep a charger on stand by! If you use your phone medium to heavy use you should get to the end of your work day and you can charge it when you get home. Did you get your sd card issue resolved?

Ive found that having a spare battery always charged, along with the spare battery charger handy so I can charge a battery while using my phone, works great for my mental 'battery issues'!
On Synergy 1.3, I have AMAZING battery life! Can usually go 2 days between charges if I wanted to...Unplug the phone at 8am and at midnight, I'm rocking 50-60% still, depending on the day.
GSam Battery Monitor can help find apps that are abnormally draining the battery...But I've found that it too can cause the phone to get stuck in a wake lock...So I don't keep it installed, only use it if I have a weird battery drain issue.
I'm the same way, if not worse. I constantly look at power usage (in miliamps and %/hr). I should just remove all battery widgets and percentages, I almost always have enough battery, just paranoid.

That's weird how they do that.
My phone does the same exact thing with the big 4000+ Hyperion battery. It drops to 70% in what seems like no time at all, then three hours later it is still at 70%. The battery gauge obviously is not very accurate at all.
Right now, my phone has been on for just under 10 hours and says it is at 40%. if I just let it go (I charge it every night) it would run all night and still be at around 40% tomorrow morning.
I am the same way after just installing synergy 1.3 on saturday I have been constantly checking battery percentage. Anytime I change anything I get obsessed with it for a while.
This is what I like to see! Used to not be able to get close to 3 hours screen on.

Battery
I've read about the new batteries and not letting them completely discharge, instead recharging when it gets to 15% or so.My battery life was awful, if I was at 45% or less I needed to plug it in before going to bed. This was a daily thing, I charged my phone every night, Well I forgot the other night and woke up to a dead battery. I plugged the phone in and turned it on while charging. I charged it to 100%. This was 2 mornings ago (not been charged since) and I'm just now a 46% with normal usage (for me). I just thought this was interesting and wonder if anyone else has experienced this or can replicate it.
Battery Life
I'm getting smoking battery life, been tethering a good 2/3 hours and been on the phone and answering email add day and checking this site. I am on 1.5 Synengy, and using the Snapdragon CPU script that was posted in one of the forums. I can post the link as I don't have a large enough post count, however I would search the forum and find the mod and use it.
It's amazing, I'm at 51% battery and have not plugged in all day. I unplugged it at 7:30 am Arizona time and it's 4:30pm AZ time.
Try it, it' works.

Here is what I was talking about it's works for me.
Here is the link to the mod I used on my G3 it works amazing, it's a little confusing to enable, but one it's enabled you can rest assured it will work.
You can also change the processor speeds along with the battery save options.
Make sure you read the OP VERY CAREFULLY, it's where all the details are to run the script.

Wow, your cell standby was eating you up. Hope you got that fixed.
As far as battery life, I feel mine is average to good. Cell standby and Android OS account for only 9% and 5% of my battery, the other 52% of it used up is screen.. so I think thats pretty good numbers to see.

[Q] Help with identifying Nexus S i9020a Battery Drain

Running Stock ICS 4.1.2 on Nexus S i9020A on AT&T US.
The battery was fine till about a few months back, but of late, it is draining @ around 8-10% per hour on standby!. I originally thought JB was causing the drain, and switched to ICS, and finally to GB. But the drain is consistent across all three.
There is also accelerated battery drain if my phone is completely switched off. If I leave the battery in the phone after powering off, the battery goes from 100 - 0 in less than 4 hours. Thinking the battery might have gone bad, I bought another oem battery, but that is exhibiting the same behavior.
This leads me to think there might be a hardware issue with my phone. I am tired of keeping the phone plugged in at all times, and am ready to throw this out the window and get another phone. As a last ditch effort, I wanted to post this here to see if I can get any kind of feedback/confirmation on this before I buy another phone. Other users are reporting 1-2% battery drain on standby, so 8-10% drain is unacceptable by any standard.
I have attached some screenshots from today when the battery was at 20% after about 9 hours. For this test, I did the following last night:
1. uninstalled all apps I downloaded
2. turned off WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, sync, auto brightness ( set to the minimum brightness)
I charged the phone fully, and then left it on standby, with minimal usage - I think I made a 2 minute call, checked my email once, and read some rss feeds for about 5 minutes in the 9 hours I tested it.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
I know I'm not giving any advice here but I just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. No matter what ROM GB/ICS/JB I lose too much battery per hour with the phone just on standby. There's no explanation for %10 battery drain per hour with pretty much everything off (wifi, data, gps, nfc, background data, etc)
I have tried everything and now I must admit I've given up. I'm just going to ride out CM 10.1 until I can decide on a new phone, most likely the Nexus 4 or HTC One.

Doesn't seem like a software issue to me, sadly.

Yeah, your phone doesn't seem to be doing much while asleep. 20 minutes screen on, 35 minutes active, yet battery down to 21%. My battery would be at 90% with that sort of usage. Since you changed the battery (I'll assume it's a decent quality battery, although a cheap battery could be in cause), there's not much left.
Have you tried switching 3G off? 3G seems to SUCK the life out of these Nexus S batteries like no tomorrow.
But I suspect it's a hardware issue with the Nexus S phones. I have WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and auto-sync all shut off and a static wallpaper and I will lose 20% of my battery in 7-8 hours.
Battery is kernel related. Try changing your I/o scheduler to row and governor to smartassv2. If you don't have those options then look for a kernel that does...air kernel and matrix should suffice.
NO SOLUTION so far
A friend was having the same issue, gave him the battery of my nexus s ... it lasted him for 7-8hrs max whereas it gives me 1 day~ on 2G and normal use without gaimng . So my guess like his mobile your mobile may have some component which is short and draining out the battery . I have been trying to look around for answer but so far no luck. So better check it with another batteryif you can before purchasing a new one.
Vampire test
If anyone is investigating why their Nexus S suddenly starts draining the battery in a matter of hours, BEFORE spending a ton of time (like I did) trying to diagnose what software problem you might have, do the vampire test, as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42586314
I wasted days before coming across this test on this forum, and it proved it had to be a hardware fault.
I have two healthy batteries, both hold a charge for days (probably weeks) when not inserted in the phone, but pop one in the phone, leave it powered off, and within 6 hrs it's dead. So frustrating, and sad to see this phone go.

I turn alot of stuff off that aint being used and only turn them on if need be! None the less this is by far the best battery life i have ever experienced from a phone! It also drains consistently where as with the htc it used to drop from 100 - around 96 within a few minutes and then when it got to 30 it seemed to suddenly start draining faster! I took this off charge at 100 and left in standby for over 4 or 5 hours and it was still at 100%
I had great battery life when I first got mine. Since I updated the software, it's tanked.
I have repaired and factory reset it and i've optimised everything with battery savings, but went from 8 hours SOT and two day battery to around 6 screen on and at about 20% when I go to bed after one day.
HTC One M8 gave me around 6 hours screen on time, and lasted a day and a half.
Hoping this sorts itself out, as the screen temperature issue, speaker notification volume, and now battery life, is not enough to of justified my jumping ship :/ (Even though I really wanted it because it's waterproof) lol.
All that said, the battery life even now is excellent still.
It's not that good as some people say but still ok. I would say that maybe 20-30% better than htc one m8. This means that you can easily go through the work day but if you would be go out after the work day (partying) you would be a bit worried if the battery lasts.

I have hight demand about battery life but I'm also happy with Z3 dual. I wish it can be charge ( much ) faster by microUSB port, best could be about 2 hours.
I am actually disappointed by the battery. It's down to 80% after just an hour and a half with medium usage. How is it going to last 2 days like that? Don't know if my phone is a faulty device or I am doing something wrong. It's charging now, I will put up some screenshots if it's still bad. Everything else is perfect so the battery being bad (which should be the best thing with this phone) is making me sad :/

Sadly no. I'm only on WIFI and the brightness is on half and auto. I haven't gone a full day with this phone yet so I will let the battery go down to zero and take a screenshot before that to see if the results are really that bad or just like everyone else
I charged my when i first got it since i unplugged at 20:00 its now 22:13 the next day with heavy use im at 46%

Damn. I have used mine for 5.5 hours and it's already down to 55%.
What are you doing with it

First charge and use,
Been unplugged for about 9.5 hours. A lot of whatsapp usage today. Battery life currently sitting at 65%. About half LTE and half WiFi.
This is a lot better than my Samsung S4, but not sure how it compares to other users.
I'm actually curious if anyone has compared the z2 and z3 battery performance in real world usage with the same usage pattern? Which has the longer sceen on time and standby time etc.

Nothing special
Could anyone tell me if this looks right? Is it good or bad? I didn't charge it overnight so ~10 hours are included in which I didn't use the phone.
Here's my battery usage the first day after I got it (charged up to full overnight before starting to use):
http://imgur.com/a/RyftP?gallery
Summary: 13.5 hours on battery, leaving me with 6%, with 8h43m+ screen on time and 3+ hours of music. Coming from a Nexus 4, I'm very very happy.
coming from LG G i'm very happy.
I'm struggling to get 4 hours of screen time before it dies after less than a day. No apps at all hogging the battery or anything like that.
Standby battery seems to be awful, even with stamina mode on blocking everything other than facebook messenger and gmail. It's losing 1% an hour, which doesn't sound bad, but my Galaxy Note 3 was draining 1% every three hours on both stock rom and Cyanogen 11. Moto G 2014 similarly does around 1% every 2-3 hours.
Standby for the most part should be represented by an almost perfectly straight line in battery stats, but on the Z3 its a constant curve downwards, much like the standby battery bug in the OnePlus One.
I'm in a full 4 bar LTE area as well, so it's not poor signal doing the damage.
The strangest of all, is the first day I had the phone it managed to get me through 2 full days easily. That included 8 hours of music streaming over bluetooth each day, and 4 hours screen time. Yesterday I was just over 3 hours screen time after 17 hours, and it was on 6% battery, including the 8 hours or so music streaming. That is exceptionally poor compared to both the Note 3 and Moto G.
But who knows, maybe disabling all the bloatware is causing issues. Either way I'll have a replacement device from amazon tomorrow which hopefully wont have the screen issues or bluetooth/wifi dropouts (thoguh I suspect that is software related).

go into your battery settings and make a screen shot
I had z2 so will offer comparison on battery. It does last longer than z2 by approx 20-30%, on my usual usage with z2 I was at approx 15% remaining by end of the day, with the z3 I'm at about 35%ish.
Heavy use and relatively bright screen.

Battery life issue?

Hi all,
I received my Z3 in the mail from Tmobile Wednesday night and I spent most the night setting up and installing all my apps, and finished that process yesterday morning. I did charge overnight to 100%.
Yesterday, my battery only lasted till about 7 p.m., and I had to charge again.
Normally, I'd think this is amazing battery life because my Moto X wouldn't make it to 3-4 without a charge.
However, I'm pretty let down after hearing about the 2 day battery life, and not even making it through one day.
Granted, I am a pretty heavy user. But even then, this thing is supposed to get 12-13 hrs of video playback which is much more intensive than the texting/web browsing/etc. that I usually do. My battery lasted 10 hrs 30 minutes yesterday with very little video playback.
If you have some tips or suggestions, please let me know.

That's today's battery usage, with about 5 SMS sent, minimal browsing, and just checking out some stock trading.
(Sorry for the enormous photo..)
Turn location services off, they were draining my battery.
I turned Location services off shortly after you posted.
At 79% now
Depending on your apps auto-sync can also kill your battery pretty quickly, I usually disable it. If you want to keep auto-sync go into "accounts and sync" and only keep your essentials on auto. Ex Contacts, Calender.
Use the WiFi calling option, because cellular is disabled and that saves a lot of battery. Also are you in an area of good reception?
About an hour ago I deactivated Notification Mirroring through Pushbullet, deactivated auto-sync for soundcloud and yahoo.
I'm trying everything to see if it will change. So far, as of 6:05 p.m., I am sitting at 36% since 8:00 a.m.
Not bad, but a FAR cry from 2 day battery life..

I have enabled WiFi calling for the last few hours. It seems to have slowed the drain just a bit. I don't think I am getting good signal at work however (-105 dBm), and I am aware that it may be causing some significant battery drain.
I have also turned off Location Services, and enabled Stamina Mode since I hit around 70%.

I forgot to say this but, give it a few charging cycles for the battery to be calibrated or do a full charge use till 0% and recharge to full and then use.
Thank you, I will try that out as well. I know it's only been a couple of days, but other users are reporting astronomical numbers in battery life; something like 2-3 days without a single charge.
So i put my phone to charge over night at 4 am and i woke up at 9 to find it only charged to 90 percent, and as of 9:37 it's still at 90 percent.
A disconnect and restart has not fixed it

It was never 2 days of screen on, video watching etc. I get 2 days of moderate use, 1 day of heavy use; it seems that's about par for the course for this phone. Smart connect is great if you don't need connectivity overnight; you can turn off data etc and have the battery practically untouched for 8 hours or so.
Even with average to bad signal I get about 5-6.5Hrs screen time with mostly surfing and a little GPS use.
What exactly do you do and what is your brightness setting?
Out of curiosity, are you using the google now launcher?
Hmm not sure why got mine Wed. First thing I did was drain it fully. Then let it charge overnight. Over the couple days ive been disabling things i would never use. Today was the first real day I used it a lot and it did very well for me. Music, facebook, twitter, email, web searching while at a boring day of work on and off but all together gotta say around 2-3hrs. I make sure to clear multitasking of apps I dont want running. Only thing I keep on is email and sometimes twitter. Other then that most my settings are still stock.

I see you have 2 signal bars, what does it show in status for signal strength (dBm/ASU)? That can dent your battery life a bit.

only get that when i lay it down. That was at the end of the day of course at my house. I got wifi calling on and mobile data still going when at home because it doenst bother me, but my battery still so good. I didnt charge it till about 2am last night/this morning and it was about 40% battery still. Anyways the signal is 99-107 dBm
My signal is about the same as yours.
I found the screen is the biggest consumer, but that stopped once I disabled the "Smart Backlight Control" under Settings, Display. It ran hot and drained super fast with that enabled. I'm a heavy user and since disabling, drain has slowed to what I'd consider normal.

I posted the quoted text on Oct 25th...and since then, the phone has not fully charged over night once. Today, I woke up after 6 hrs to find it had charged to 84%. Yesterday, it was until 75%. Etc, etc. I'm going to try a different charger tonight to see if that will change anything...This is a pretty annoying problem on an otherwise great phone. Hoping the issue is the charger and not the phone itself.
