I've been away from the Samsung world for a little while, so I am not entirely sure what the status of certain things is:
I see comments about battery issues on 5.1.1 devices after PingPong - how bad are those issues if they are still present?
Are there any (other) downsides to updating my S6 to 5.1 before rooting it with PingPong?
Will I be able to continue getting OTA updates after root?
I think I am only interested in rooting my device for now - I'll try to skip the custom ROM for now, and with root I should be able to debloat the phone sufficiently.
Battery is bad after root because device won't go to deep sleep. This can be fixed. Just go to chain fire cfauto root thread and there is a fix. Also you won't receive otas after root

jesus, do people just blindly post
No, not blindly. But the PingPong Root thread is 200+ pages, and refers me to a thread warning me about using Odin to flash 5.1.1 - which I wasn't planning to do, I was planning on OTAing 5.1.1 and PingPong-ing then, which doesn't require Odin.
So, to be perfectly safe, I can OTA to 5.1.1 now, gain root with CFAR, and then apply the deep sleep fix, and should be fine?
1. Ping-pong root does NOT work on 5.1.1. The deep sleep issues come from rooting via TWRP/CF-AUTO but of course that trips KNOX.
2. See no. 1
3. You can get OTAs but you will not be able to install them while rooted. In fact, I don't believe you can even download them while you're rooted.
4. READ, READ, READ! This stuff has been asked and answered 1000x in these forums.

I want to root my phone but am unsure if this will affect my phone's capability of getting OTA Updates. I am using Sprint
A couple questions:
1) Will I have to go through some other procedure to get the latest Android/Sprint updates?
2) Will updates occur normally and cause me to lose root access? I'll simply have to re-root?
3) Is the procedure above "stock rooting" the phone?
Thanks!
Hoping to get a response fairly quickly...anybody have any information?

1. You can accept the OTA but you can run into problems.
2. If no problem occurs, usually the phone becomes unrooted. However there is an app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper) that supposedly let's you keep root when updating but I haven't used it so don't know about success rate.
3. That procedure should root your phone and leave it stock ROM, yes.
However I suggest you just install a custom ROM after rooting

Hello,
I rooted my Note Pro 12.2 and now it won't update, says: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.
How can I update it? Should I install Xposed Framework?

If you don't have xposed framework installed, wiping cache from stock recovery might help. Or try to update using Kies 3, not via OTA.
But remember, you might lose root, and if you got Knox 0x0 still, there might be no way to root again without triggering KNOX flag, if samsung pushes some patched kernel update and you install it.
+1 to what Spere said.
I root every android device that I own and my #1 rule is never actively look for OTA updates after rooting. There's too much risk of problems. If updates come out, wait for factory images of the update to be posted and let more experienced users or developers test things first.

Root + OTA = a really, really bad idea. The first rule of Rooting, after 'RTFM', is 'DO NOT INSTALL OTA UPDATES.'

Note Pro 12.2 P900 rooted with stock rom
Guys, thanks for all the info you provide here. I'm a long time follower, first time poster and need some help.
I've recently rooted my new note pro 12.2 model P900 using chainfire's autoroot. I used ODIN and the image provided in chainfires zip file... root was successful. I did not flash a new ROM nor do I want one. I am probably in the minority, but all I wanted was root just to delete the bloatware. I am not interested in customs mods or ROMs. I want to stay on stock Samsung firmware, just minus bloat. I'm an operating system purist... I feel more comfortable with the stock/official op system.
I tripped knox, but I suppose I don't care. Would be great if eventually it can be reset one day. But whatever
I know you guys have said root + OTA update is a bad idea.... apparent I won't be able to do it anyway. I get that error message when I check for an OTA update from Samsung saying my device has been modified.
My question is how can I get the USA version of the current stock firmware and then the future versions of any updates FROM A TRUSTED SOURCE? Doesn't seem like I can get it from Samsung anymore . I'm afraid that if I just download a 1.5gb zip file from some fileserver on the Web I may get something that's not quite legit.
Also, is it because I am rooted, or because I tripped knox, or because I deleted stock apps that I get that message during the OTA check I tried to run?
Thank you!

Both http://www.sammobile.com/ and http://samsung-updates.com/ are reliable sources. I haven't checked if they actually have the firmware, though.

If you have changed the recovery or the structure of the system (for example removed syatem apps) the OTA will fail.
If you flash the stock recovery and reset or reflash a stock rom the OTA will complete and you will lose root

installing CF Auto Root doesn't do anything with the Bootloader really- and it does not wipe your phone. All it does is ROOT your phone so you can use Rooted APS and in the future, install Custom ROMS and a custom recovery if you want to. If you have not rooted your phone before, I strongly suggest you do a lot of reading about ROOT - what it means - benefits and so on ...
I'm very familiar with root, just wasn't sure what this method required. How does this impact Knox and the ota?

I suspect it trips Knox and prevents OTA updates, as it was the case in the past with CF Roots (and any root method, really) and I've seen posted nowhere that it will be different for the S6.
Hi,
I know that CF has released his auto root for T-Mobile, I just don't know what model number file I should download. I pre ordered the phone and it's not due to be delivered until the 10th. Anyone know the model number for the T-Mobile S6?

Technically it is G920T - International Version is G920F
in the OH SHI>>>department - houston, I have a problem.
I was probably too eager - but I attempted to do CF AutoROOT today - I downloaded the correct File from ChainFire's site - confirmed that it was correct and did an MD5 check -
When I tried to odin the CF AUTO root - it started normally -- it looked like it was instlaling correctly and - thenit froze - nothing changed on the screen - just sat there.. I waited another 15 minutes and unplugged the USB Cord - but now I am stuck on the Download screen and I can't turn it off. And of course, I cannot pull the battery because that doesn't happen on this phone.
Hold on there - Just got it to turn off - I had tried three finger reset several times - it did not work anytime I tried them - held for multiple minutes - Vol Down/Home/Off button - and the Volume up with the other two for the same amount of time - I tried it one more time - this tiem using Vol Down combination - and the phone rebooted.
I was surprised I had issues - and I don't know why CF autoroot failed as it supposedly has worked for others - but I am going to be a bit more careful......(got a few more gray hairs as a result)

Disable Knox
In the past, when you first launched Super SU after rooting with CF Auto Root - it would say "Knox Detected - do you want to disable"
That did not happen this time for me anyway - and I am wondering if this will be address in future releases of CF Auto Root or Super SU?
After rooting my Tmobile S6, the app com.tmobile.pr.adapt requests superuser permissions. I've denied it, but I'm curious if anyone knows what it is?
Great job! Could you please tell if I can root my G920F without affecting knox? Thank you.

The only thing keeping me from getting this phone is lack of root and the locked bootloader. However, I might be able to survive without a custom ROM if I can at least have root.
Would I have to buy this phone ASAP in order to use this root exploit before Verizon/Samsung try to patch it? If they do patch it, would there be a way to downgrade to a vulnerable version of the OS so I could apply this root in case I don't get the phone before they patch it?

Now the confusion..
I have been waiting for an OTA to get to OC3 but now I'm not sure I don't already have a newer build than that??
Under build number I've got: LRX22G.G920VVRU1AOE2
I am guessing this is newer than LRX22G.G920VVRU1AOC3 which is in a lot of recent posts.
Edit
well yes I have the newest already. Just used PingPong root to root it. Had to do it a couple times before it took but works great.

Sure, when the process is complete you will have root and when you reboot the phone it will say custom on the slash screen.
Other than that it is still a little fuzzy.
OF1 has the patched kernel and cannot be rooted nor can it be downgraded back to AOE2 or AOC3
Hello everyone,
Back in October, I had rooted my phone to install xposed etc. A little after that I received a notification for the stagefright update (i know that was a long time ago) and I ignored it (because of little time, I wanted to install cm13 but I never could find the time). Since marshmallow is a little more stable than lollipop, I would now like to shift to MM.
I distinctly remember trying to install the stagefright update (after rooting lollipop), and my phone went into a bootloop.
Two questions,
1. Does rooting not allow you to update your phone? Does it cause bootloop problems?
2. I want to stick to stock, so should I download the stock images? I'll be losing a lot of my data, I'll back it up but some of it is bound to get lost. Is it worth it?
Thanks in advance
You won't be able to update while rooted. Actually updating with a factory image is probably safer than taking an ota update. Personally, I think the update is worth it.

Your presumption that Marshmallow is more stable than Lollipop is... well... many people would argue that the opposite was true.
You should never take an update after rooting, especially if you have custom recovery installed... OTA's are designed strictly for purely stock, unmodified phones.
At this point flashing the factory images is preferred, you do this from a PC not the phone though. You could try to unroot (SuperSU has a full unroot option in it's settings), but the real key is to restore your stock recovery, there are threads here to show you how to do that.

Perhaps stability is not the real argument here... both are stable, as are most production ROMs, I have been using Marshmallow since early December and never had any real problems. But there are pros and cons to both and depending on your situation one may be better than the other, but I guess that wasn't really the point of this thread so I will say I half agree with your statement.

Nope, in fact, you can't relock the bootloader even if you want to. The bootloader lock state is not relevant to taking an OTA.
