VPN using BoxPN works using VpnROOT without pin lock - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6

For some time I've had BoxPN which I use on my desktop and notebook. Use it at home occasionally but on the road a lot. Never tried it on my phone before though.
Today I tried to set it up and the default VPN that comes with the phone wants to force a screen lock. Don't use screen lock when I am at home... PITB...
Since I am already rooted, thought I try a few things.
Downloaded the free version of VpnROOT - PPTP - Manager and it worked right out of the box... using only the hostname, account name and password. Got the Paid Plugin which then allowed me to change the name of the connection and make a widget on one of my home screens to auto-login.
It can be setup to auto-start on boot up, but I really didn't need that.
Been using it for a couple hours now VPN to Canada, so that I can stream via the MLB At Bat app (normally blacked out video) to video cast to my TV using chromecast.
I've been up since 6am and the battery is still 67% which I kind of thought would be lower. I have full GPS on, Wifi, not using much screen since it is casting to the TV.
ROOT is required.

No connection to the developer, application etc... just gave it a try this morning.

Remote Desktop via direct Wifi

Is there a program or way i can use remote desktop without having a router connect to my laptop. So using the built in wifi on the laptop to connect to my HD2.
Or even bluetooth..
Just an idea as I can't have a router here at uni.
are you trying to basically surf the web from your laptop using your HD2?
you need something like internet sharing which is available on the Device itself (its a standard Windows thing). you need to set it up though, and of course make sure your device has internet access (GPRS/whatever connection methods).
Nah not using the internet, but to view and control my pc from my phone over wifi.
gotcha. why would you wanna do that?
but anyway...dont think it is possible like that as the wireless on the laptop will not act as a DHCP (like a router does) to give an IP to clients who are connecting to it.
It would be cool though to be able to use it as a remote control to perhaps skip or play music etc. But connecting through wifi would be impossible i think.
I recall with my old old old sony ericsson phone I could connect to my computer using a bluetooth dongle and control music and even the mouse cursor...such an awesome feature. A bluetooth program for the HD2 would be good providing you have a bluetooth dongle.
funny you should mention an app like that as I developed an app a few years ago which does just that called WMP Remote.
basically, you connect it via bluetooth or wireless (as long as you get an activesync connection going, or even wireless with a router) and then get a list of files from a certain directly, play/pause/vol up/down from the Mobile application and play files in full screen and so on....
haven't updated it in a LONG time but was a big hit back then.
also developed another app called DAR~ling, which is a Digital Audio Recorder

It looks an awesome App, but does not work with WM6.5 & Windows 7 (not sure which one cause the issue).
IMHO worth some re-development and putting on Windows Market Place $$$ I'd buy.
Ben
aww, thats encouraging mate! Thanks!
not sure why it doesnt run on your devices? I ran it on my Samsung omnia which runs WM 6.1 - works fine.
I've also got a WM5 device...works fine on that. the issues are just the screen display!
I have been meaning to "start" the project again but just had no time at all. been so busy.
HELLO
T2 REMOTE TOUCH
Very nice program. I use it to do anything to my computer because I'm too lazy to get down of the bed. I use it when it was beta and the only bad thing was that he only had color mode for free
Anyway if you can manage to create a wireless network connection (AD-HOC) with designeted IP's it's going to work. I don't know about the port dough.
Anyway, I have windows XP, and I don't know very much about win7's configuration.
GOOD LUCK

[Q] Anyone use Splashtop?

I need help. I was talking to a guy that claimed to be a developer of Splashtop, which allows you to run your laptop remotely from your tablet. The app was initially created for iphone/ipad, but is available in the Android market. I was so impressed with the app and how fast and seamless it runs your laptop programs that I purchased without question. Well I have a question: how do you connect to it remotely while away from home? I have turned on laptop, turned off auto shut down, and turned on splashtop on the pc. Everytime I have tried to connect away from home I get an "out of reach" message. I have been as little as 5 miles away. If anyone out there has knowledge of what I may be doing wrong please let me know. The guy told me this should work from anywhere just as long as my computer is turned on and running splashtop.
Thanks!!
I use it on my xoom, and it works great, but I haven't tried using it away from home. Hmm, thanks for the heads up, I want to find out too.

Yes, great at home, but I can just use my laptop. If I can get it to actually work when I am away from home, then it makes my Xoom THE BEST thing to have! I get so tired of carrying my laptop around, this would help.

I'm actually wondering this also. Does anyone have any insight?

Yeah i got the splashtop and to make it work outside your home network, you must do port forwarding.
i uninstalled it because now, i keep getting drop connections and if i reconnect, it gives me error saying it is already being accessed by another device. this was both on my home network and accessing it from the outside. it was great but not anymore.
sorry for the rant.
Hmm
For the price it's probably not as good as some of it's competitors, which are closer to 5x the price of this. I would attribute it's lack of quality to the problems such as devices being already connected etc.
As for distance, it makes no difference, the most important thing to do is make sure that if you have a router, it must have the necessary ports forwarded to the computer you want to connect to.
Personally I try to avoid remote desktop and instead try make everything i might want from home accessible via web-apps or various servers.

I don't have the app so I'm just giving some general comments:
Im assuming it works over wifi?
1) Maybe you need to enter the ip address of your home and name a port? then get the router to port forward to your laptop?
2) If it works over wifi, then if your router has the option set up a VPN. then connect to it when ur away from home - then its exactly as if ur xoom is connected to the local network itself

Port forwarding is a new concept to me, so not sure how to do it, but you guys have given me a new thing to Google. Also, I did have my internet run through a router, but I disconnected it because I on have my home internet through ATT Uverse and didn't have anything that really needed to run through it. If you have some quick directions for me, then I will be grateful!
Teamviewer
Teamviewer does it away from home. Theres no sound and fluid video tho
I assume this is similar to Wyse Pocket, and i have never had issues connecting via 3G. Is this a better app?

well your router gets its internet then shares it via with the rest of your computers.
Port forwarding takes all the data from a specific port and forwards it to a specific device.
to start you have to assign ur computer a static ip address (again through your router) then forward all data to it. sorry i cant be more precise but the procedure varies between routers. I have never used the ATT Uverse. Honestly the best thing to do is have a browse thorugh ur manual or google for a guide
try this site to see if your model is listed. if not choose a similar model and try to do similar steps

These apps were made with very different goals in mind...
I use both of these apps for what I believe they were designed for and I'm happy with both. The WYSE PocketCloud app supports RDP / VNC connections but SplashTop doesn't. It's not even really designed for WAN access but rather just LAN access. Yes, unlike PocketCloud you'll need to use port forwarding to use it in the likely unsupported WAN configuration.
SplashTop runs beautifully on my LAN but I don't expect it to work outside those parameters. I think SplashTop has far superior frame rate / audio sync for watching Videos (with / without audio). Is it the optimized support for the Tegra 2? I don't know, but it works and works well. It lets me watch Hulu, NetFlix, etc with rarely a hiccup. PocketCloud can't touch that ATM.
Even though PocketCloud's framerate and audio sync are MUCH worse by comparison to SplashTop making it unusable (even when on my LAN connected by WiFi) for the purpose of watching video through it, I don't begrudge it since I don't believe that's what it's for. It has an awesome UI (I prefer it somewhat over SplashTop's) and works very well over RDP. When the Terminal Services update emerges from closed beta, it will be even more awesome.
These apps probably shouldn't even be compared as they are meant to do different things, different ways. Each works for what they were designed for. Neither is perfect. In my case, both were very easy to setup. Any difficulties I had were caused by my own firewall setup. Neither were expensive IMO.
Has anyone figured out how to connect using mycloud when you are away from home? I've tried port forwarding and the portchecker from portforward.com verifies that my ports are open and are forwarded properly but I still can't seem to connect using my modem's WAN ip.
My modem/router model is smc d3gn and I am connecting directly to it with my computer.
I've also tried using the modem's built in vpn function and I can connect to the vpn (accessing the router setup page from my tablet shows me logged in with a pptp ip so I know that I'm connected but splashtop still refuses to connect.)
Hope someone can figure this out soon... I've tried the experimental locator thing using my gmail account but I'm not sure if it does anything.

Netflix

Does anyone know how to get Netflix to work in Canada? After the recent update the app keeps saying "your device needs to be updated to instantly stream videos" before the update it said it couldn't stream because of my region... someone please help..

There's plenty of thread that shows how to get NF working in Canada.
Use a US IP. you need to log in the first time using a Vpn from the US.
you can use one of those site that let you try before you buy. After you successfully log in and maybe even watch a little you can use your regular wifi
It's pretty simple, luckily.
1. Install the latest netflix app using market enabler or find the apk.
2. Do NOT sign in yet.
3. Set up a VPN connection under your device wireless settings. (I've used "VPN Reactor" and "Best Free VPN" and they both work). Start the VPN connection.
4. Open the app and sign in. Pick a movie and start to play it for a few seconds.
5. Then you can stop the video, disconnect the vpn, and netflix should work fine now without having to use a vpn.
Hope this helps! For some reason this works fine on my TF but wouldn't work on my Nexus S. Not sure why.
Thank you do much guys got it up and working! Your awesome!

I followed this and signed with VPN reactor but everytime I sign in on my tablet I get an error saying Server hung up and that my username and password is incorrect....even though I have double checked it and it is the correct un and pswd. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?
Thanks
Forgive my ignorance, but do you set up the VPN on the tablet itself? When you say "set up a VPN on your wireless device" are you meaning on the tablet, another computer (like a laptop or desktop) or the router itself?
I may be completely wrong here, (I've never used a VPN in my life) but as I understand it, I'm supposed to set up a VPN on my computer, then log into that VPN using the VPN app on my transformer, and connect remotely to get netflix to work?
Thanks in advance for clarification!

Just add a vpn connection under "Wireless & Networks" on your transformer.

[Q] Auto wifi/3g off - can i still stream radio?

I'm using an app to turn off all internet when screen is off. Works great, but it also makes it impossible to stream radio/podcasts when the screen is off.
Do you know an alternative app that can do this, but add exceptions like:
Podcast Addict is not running --> Disable wifi & 3G.
Podcast Addict is running --> nothing
Maybe there's another solution, maybe it can be achieved by tasker. I just noticed that auto disabling my connections saves soooo much power on my fresh android 4.4 stock install on my Galaxy S4

Loading videos on PSN store and the Netflix App on Chromecast + Google TV kill my PDAnet connection

Posted this on r/HomeNetworking and r/androidapps but it's a very specific issue so just trying to increase my chances of finding someone that can help
So I know this is oddly specific but I'm at my wit's end trying to figure this out. We live out in the middle of nowhere so our phone data (full bars service from Verizon somehow) is our only source of internet, so I use a USB tether through PDAnet (for avoiding hotspot data cap) on a phone to a laptop that is then connected from its ethernet port to a router's WAN port, which then provides a "pure" WiFi connection to the rest of the house (PDAnet's native Direct WiFi hotspot setup is useless for any device that can't use the PDAnet app on its own end). I recently set this up (i.e. actually utilizing a router instead of Windows Hotspot) and it's worked great but we're STILL having this same issue that was happening back on the old Hotspot configuration.
So now that I have an actual interface to configure the connection (i.e. the router config page) I was hoping I could finally address this issue. Basically whenever I try to load a video on the Playstation Network store from my PS4/PS5 connected to said WiFi or when I use the Netflix app on my Chromecast + Google TV also on the WiFi network, something is pinging back to the initial PDAnet connection so that it gets "unchecked" on both the phone's app as well as the desktop app, thus killing my entire network until I manually turn both back on.
Going through Netflix in the laptop browser, using literally any app other than Netflix on the Chromecast + Google TV, and using PSN for any purpose besides loading videos in the store all work perfectly fine. I'm thinking is has to do with some sort of location check but I have no idea what else I can adjust in any of the device's settings or the router config page to fix this. Trying to turn location tracking on/off on both the phone and laptop has no effect, but I know Netflix can be weird about location (i.e. different content for different regions and people using VPNs to get around said location issue) and I know PSN does something similar (i.e. different content based on different regions again).
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what exactly is different about these two scenarios that causes PDAnet to "nope" out of the situation, and what else I can try to adjust to remedy the issue?
