[Q] SMS and chat split in Hangouts. No apparent way to remerge - General Questions and Answers

HTC One M8 running Cyanogenmod 12.1
My phone restarted the other day (not uncommon.) When it rebooted all my account information was gone (never happened before.)
No big deal, I reentered the information, but since then my SMS and chat hangouts have been split in Hangouts. I have cleared the cache and the data. Uninstalled and reinstalled Hangouts. I even performed a reset and restore. No luck.
Each contact now has 2 conversations, one for SMS and one for chat. If I go into a chat conversation I no longer can touch the green bubble and select SMS. If I go into SMS I can touch the "SMS" button and select between carrier number and Google Voice number. I have tried long pressing the SMS conversation and the chat conversation and the "Merge" button does not appear. If I select UNMERGE from an older conversation (pre restart) it will split out and I can remerge those one thread. But it still will only allow me to use one protocol in each thread.
Any suggestions?
PS - Yes, "Enable Merged Conversations" is checked. I have checked it and unchecked it to no avail.

Same thing happened to me!
I don't know what's going on but it's driving me nuts! The same thing is happening to me. The difference is that I'm running the stock Verizon Rom. No root. Anyone out there with any ideas?

XDA IIs Text Messaging application has disappeared

Hi. My battery discharged and my phone did a hard reset. I have resynced, and everything seem fine, except that my sms / text messaging facility has disappeared. I have even tried restoring an old backup, but to no avail. There is no longer an option to send or receive text messages (sms's). If I go into messages, I only get MMS and Outlook as options (and the pop email account I've set up). I recently installed the latest ROM version 3/10/05 which came out in June. Can anyone help? :?:

[Q] When I log out of Hangouts, SMS disappear

Stock Nexus 5 on T-Mobile.
Have somehow gotten into a situation where my SMS and MMS messages in Hangouts disappear from view (in Hangouts) if I log out of Google+/Hangouts. Log in - they appear - log out, they disappear.
Have even tried clearing all MMS and SMS, logging out of Google+/Hangouts, and then restoring the SMS/MMS messages. Nothing. No messages seen (in Hangouts). And then I log back in to Google+/Hangouts, and wham! they reappear.
Somehow, Hangouts has decided that all of my MMS/SMS messages belong in my Google+/Hangouts profile, and if I'm not in that profile, I don't need to see my SMS/MMS (in Hangouts).
[Third-party SMS/MMS apps remain OK, however the messages are messed up - wrong order, SMS show with a blank title line, etc]
What is going on, and how can I fix this?
You probably just have to close it and re-open it (if it's still set as the default SMS app), but the bigger question is...
Why do you keep logging out and back in to Google+/Hangouts?

It is kind of a two part app. a standalone sms app and a sms/hangouts app at the same time. When you are logged into hangouts you are smsing in that part of the app. If you sign out you are not longer in the combined app. You are now in the stand alone version. If you don't use hangouts stay signed out. If you do use hangouts stay signed in. It is kind of "it is what it is" thing. It may change later but for now with this first release for integration that is how it acts.

hangouts is designed to stay logged in... but best way to fix it would be get a MSG app and use that for texts and then log in to hangouts when you want to use it.. Or stay logged into hangouts all the time

Would have understood if new messages I sent from Hangouts had ended up in the 'combined' app. But surprised that my old SMS messages from last week, month and year get hijacked into 'combined app' as soon as I activate SMS functionality within Hangouts, and won't show unless I'm logged in.

[Completed] [Q] Hangouts split between SMS and Chat, won't merge

Do you have this CM ROM version: [ROM][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 12.1 Nightlies for the HTC One m8 by invisiblek?
If yes, you should better post your question there.
In case that you can't post in the ROM thread, you can ask in the [HELP THREAD] HTC One M8 - Ask any questions here! by KidCarter93 alternatively.
Good luck !
I have the exact same issue. I've been using the same ROM for months, and it happened so suddenly while I was in the middle of composing a message. I didn't flash anything new or do anything out of the ordinary. I don't think this is an issue specific to any device or to CyanogenMod, but rather another issue specific to the already buggy Hangouts app.
First it only started with one contact. I added a new number for this contact, and the new number had a separate thread, while the old number and Hangouts chat remained in another thread. On this contact's phone, the thread containing my two numbers (SMS and GVoice), as well as Hangouts chat, are all merged into a single thread, so I know this is possible.
To make matters worse, I turned GVoice integration on and off, as well as the option to have SMS messages merged with Hangouts, trying to find a combination that would fix my issue. Now, ALL my previously merged contacts are in separate threads and I can't merge them back (even if I long press both conversations, the merge button doesn't appear).

Sent SMS sync issue

Hi, just bought a new ATT S7, running 6.01.
For years, i have run SMS Backup + to sync texts to my gmail account. Love it.
On my new S7, this app does not recognize/sync SMS texts sent from the phone. If i use Google now to dictate "send message to xxx saying yyy" ...that text composed that way gets sync'd. But one that is typed or dictated in the messaging app does NOT.
Sent SMS texts are NOT sync'd either using Exchange activesync. Recvd texts sync fine.
I also use MightyText and sent texts from the phone do not show up in the app. If i send a text from the MightyText web app, it usually will sync via SMS Backup +.
I have reached out to both vendors for assistance.
i have changed my keyboard from Samsung kybd to Google keyboard. no luck.
Anyone seeing anything like this?
I turned off "Advanced Messaging" and it seems to take longer to Send the SMS from the phone, and the message will intermittently sync with the various apps (Sms backup +, MightyText.) But not always.
make sure your apn info is correct for SMS / MMS

Keeping ADV messaging disabled seems to do the trick.

Google Phone & Messages compatibility

Hello. I installed Google Dialer framework via Magisk and Google Phone, Contacts & Messages app. Only thing that I have not been able to get working properly is the call button shortcut from the Messages text conversation window. Instead of going straight to dialing, it pulls up the dialer with the contacts' number. It also doesn't recognize the contact name as if it's not in the contacts' list. I have cleared cache and set defaults on all 3 apps and went from the lastest Google Phone stable to lastest beta.
Anyone have any insight or suggestions as to remedy the issue?
