How far can you reach in programming without maths / computer science degree? - General Questions and Answers

I recently finished my Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies and was considering finishing my BSc in Business Computing from London Metropolitan University which will only take 9 months to do, its a low rank Uni and really has little in the way of programming. Its a lot more focused on business part of IT with the exception of a topic on Advanced Database Design and Development using Oracle. That and it has a course on Ecommerce using C# which is most likely rather easy I assume. Cause its not a programming degree.
But someone told me you cannot reach anywhere without the knowledge of Mathematics and Algorithms Analysis and Design etc of a Computer Science degree, he said programming is all about mathematics otherwise you will never know why your code don't work.
Well I cannot just afford to start a CS degree just like that and to do so I first need to pass A Levels mathematics both Pure Math and Applied math for CAPE A levels. Then I can apply to get into University of the West Indies to study Computer Science.
This is what the average Programming Job looks like locally
http://www.caribbeanjobs.com/Programmer-Job-62566.aspx
I would also like to do Freelance work online and use Joomla to build custom websites for classifieds, build templates and a host of other programming stuff like build mobile Apps and build ASP .NET sites and connect them to databases etc.
I was wondering how far I could reach if I self study programming on my own. Also one last thing I am considering self studying A levels Maths and just paying a small fee to sit the exam. I am 30 years old so yeah my choices are a bit limited.
Is it worth it to do programming without the knowledge of Mathematics? well I know up till O levels high school maths anyways. But not A levels or anything like that.

GPS Enable DrugLord for iPhone. Need for WM6 !

http://a-steroids.com/?p=10
DrugLords is a location-based massively multiplayer online game about drug trafficking. Using GPS inside your iPhone, you become a drug dealer in the criminal underworld, which exists parallel to your everyday life.
The idea is simple. Moving between real-world locations, you trade various drugs: buy low and sell high. You find good deals and make profit by moving the stuff around. You do the trades with real people online: you find them in locations you go to.
You start as a small-time drug pusher with a goal to be a famous drug baron, make a fortune and dominate the world. Money gives you power: superior status, access to better drugs, high trafficking volumes, cash for bribes, independence from loan sharks, and a lot more.
I'd really like to see someone port this to PPC. Any takers ?

[GAME] MMORGPG ***Parallel Kingdom***

I found this game and been playing it for awhile. It was on the Iphone but it has a android port. So you can run around and kill all the Iphone people (LOL). Anyways you can use my referral code to get 1000 gold after you do the tutorial. Anyways its simple but fun.
Use Code lunnf
Also, if you want 1,000 gold here is what you do:
When you first begin the game, hit the Menu button and then tap "Profile." In the Profile page, tap the red button in the upper right hand corner and then "Enter Referral Code." Type in "lmali" without the quotes. This is my referral code. If you do not want to use mine just scroll to the section below. You'll get 1,000 Gold once you complete the tutorial. Be sure to enter the code in right away. After the tutorial is done, you won't be able to enter it in anymore.
Thanks ill try
Dont you have to pay real money to play that game.
No money required to play.
This game is BS, you need "food" to do things like level and the only way to get food is to buy it WITH REAL MONEY or recruit other people. Its fun for a day or two but quickly gets frustrating when you realize you are going to either have to pay, recruit others, or stop playing.
the guy must get some kind of bonus for refferals, thus he is spamming his code here and there. I've heard this game requires real money to play, but the guys just playing you about you dont need to.
Well I mean technically its not a scam, or at least its a scam hidden inside of a seemingly well meaning game. The problem is that in the game there are 2 major items to collect, food and gold. The gold is obvious, and you get it from many types of kills or actions but the food you cannot get without paying or recruiting another player. This is where they get you.
Currently I have spent about 2 hours adventuring and am at the point of leveling for the first time but I cannot level and get my skill point until I pay 80 food and I only have 77. If I want to continue playing I will either have to recruit someone else, buy food with real money, or sell something for food on the games market which is purely player driven so there are no default prices on basic items, just whatever people want to change.
Either way it has great potential but I think the publishers are the scam artists using this system to force players to recruit or spend money, either way the sole purpose of the game is to profit the devs.
@brandenk
I am one of the developers/publishers of Parallel Kingdom and I would like to respond to several of your statements.
"the food you cannot get without paying or recruiting another player. This is where they get you." - You can easily acquire Food in any of the trade posts in any city in the Parallel Kingdom world. There is absolutely no need to buy Food for cash to be successful in the game, you can trade and get any amount you want.
"I think the publishers are the scam artists using this system to force players to recruit or spend money" - The business model behind Parallel Kingdom is no different than any other "free to play" MMO. In our minds, at least our game allows people to try it out before they spend any money. We give them 300 free Food with their new character (it costs 80 to level so that is more than enough for 3 levels). And this model allows players to do a little more work in the game collecting resources so they can trade with other players that prefer to spend more money on the game.
"the sole purpose of the game is to profit the devs" - As much as I would like to say that I make games solely for the love of seeing people enjoy them, I still need to feed my family. We have been developing this game for over 2 years. The game is on the third version (Age of Emergence) which just debuted in November 2009. This is the first version that even had a way for us to make any kind of money on the game. The first two versions (the first year and a half of the game's life) had no way for players to spend money even if they wanted to. I'm sorry but eventually a company has to get some revenue or it simply can't support itself or its games any more.
If you are serious about this game then I would suggest a few things since I have worked for a few game companies in the past. One game I would as a solid free/paid model game is Free Realms by Sony.
First you need a store with set prices that is not player controlled. Sell basic things like lvl 1 weapons and armor, boots, gloves, all that stuff for set prices and allow players to buy or sell. This would help first time players get into the game more quickly because it would be reliable and familiar. Giving the player control is key instead of having them rely on other players.
Turn the store into an auction house. This is where all prices are controlled by the player. This way players can craft items, upgrade, and sell them to other players interested in special items. Keeping the noob market and hardcore market separate helps a lot in keeping both spectrum of players happy.
Give us a screen that shows equipped items and not all the items we currently possess. Using the items list to figure out what you are wearing is annoying.
If I kill a deer I should get food! Food is not something you should be charging players for. Going off of what you said I would think people "pay for" this game because of 2 reasons. Either they are the total noob and want some help or they are a l33t haxor. So going off that assumption it would seem like good things to charge for would be special weapons and armor or rare crafting items that can lead to better weapons/armor than you can build or find in the game.
Either way like I said in my first response, I have played this game well over 2 hours so there is something there, but there is a lot of room for improvement before this is going to be my go-to-game while I am mobile.
Yes I get a bonus from refering people. You can play and get your gear up without needing food. You can buy food from other players. Its not all bad. Not saying this game will rock your socks off but you can still play it without buying food and get most of the features of it.
It is interesting at first but yeah, you have to spend 'real' money to get supplies hire people for instance. Uninstalled.
Just wanted to mention that a ton of new content has been added...
New Monsters
New Skills
New Weapons
New Pets
And a New Dungeon (Dragon's Lair!)
Would love to hear some feedback about the new stuff. Thanks!
I've started playing two days ago and it's OK but it's not worth it. Food is too expensive, and the game is not good enough to pay that much for it.
I'm sorry but market is full of free games more addictive than this one.

This is assuming somebody is willing to spend real money on Food and then turn around and sell it for gold or whatever.
THIS NEVER HAPPENS, so he was correct your HAVE to buy food with real money to progress further in the game.
I have been playing this game for over a month now. I am @ level 19 and I haven't paid any real money on this game. I get all of my food from sales of items I collect in this game and a couple referalls. There is a kind of price regulation in the game set by the players. For example, for 1 food you pay 100 gold. There are people who do nothing but sell food at the trade posts in the game. Also, ask around on the help chat to find out what certain items are worth either in food or gold. I recently sold 150 wood on the game for 8000gold and 75 food. If you do want to start playing this game, I would suggest you talk to people in help chat. Also look for my name, Lunacyinc, in the help chat, and ask me any questions you have. I would be happy to help. And one last thing, don't believe the promises about free gold or weapons from referal codes or bonus codes. These "bonus" codes do not exist. Its all just a scam for those people to get more food.
if someone finish tutorial, please write my referral code:ivcuz
I've been playing this game for almost 900 days now. I literally started on day one when both this game and android were both brand new. I've quit for months at a time but always get drawn back. I've helped to implement features, test things, make suggestions, and lead a few of the biggest groups to ever exist in the game.
This said I'd like to mention that I've never paid a penny on parallel kingdom, or PK as many call it. It's a great game that has more social aspects to succeeding than most games do. If you can't master the social aspect of help, friends, and territory it won't matter how much money you spend... you won't get far. If you can then you've found the real value in PK.
I'm also not posting my referral code because firstly I don't roll like that and secondly i don't need any food or to spend money on the game to be successful at it.
In game name is Caern if you need any help getting started.
I've played this game for about 30 days now and haven't spent a single dime.
You can trade for food at reasonable rates through the trade posts and it isn't that hard to get gold to trade for food. If you use your food wisely like the tutorial tells you to do, you will not need to trade for food until you are about level 10 or so.
At that point you will have either found a good hunting spot where you can make good gold/hour or you will find good resources from NPCs that you can sell in the trade post for food/gold.
Sometimes it seems a little tedious, but it is fun.

[Android 1.6+] Audabubble HD Game - XDA developers made it happen!

Being a complete novice to software development, having nothing but an idea, a friend who could draw and a small amount of money I could spare, I posted on XDA that I was looking for a developer to help me create a simple child's game for tablets and HD devices. I got a fantastic response, chose my developer apdroid and soon work was started.
Now I'm happy to announce the fruits of our labour... Audabobble.
It's a simple "hear the sound and drag it to the correct image" game, with loads of bright colours and fun sounds to attract kids.
The specially created graphics are at HD resolutions, and is optimised for the mass of Android tablets that is about to sweep over us.. and the swam of pre school and nursery kids who will be addicted to them... but it also plays on regular phones just as well.
Please take a look, and tell me what you think. It's free to install off the market and has no adverts.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.duckgoesquack.audabobble
Lovely ... but ...
Lovely looking game, very easy for kids to pick up, but ... £1.00 for extra screens and you only get two to start with? I doubt many people will cough up that much, which is a shame, because the idea is good.
Thanks for taking the time to have a look and commenting.
You make a fair point, the cost is always an issue. It has to be a balancing act.
Each screen costs me a lot of money for the original artwork, and the license for the sounds (which can really rack up when you have so many objects involved). That, and the fact that coming up with original idea for scenes can be really difficult (there will only be eight scenes in total).
Also, I would have been happy to charge only 50p for two scenes but that was below Google's minimum cost allowed for all the countries.
I'm working in the hope that having screaming kids in the back of the car will inspire users to purchase additional scenes, just to get a little respite

What do you do for a living?

I am new to these forums, usually I am a car enthusiast and student, with a minor in gaming and consuming copious amounts of alcohol.
I was curious as to what you all do for a living? The amount of intricate knowledge on these boards is absolutely astonishing, and I can't help but think you are all high level computer programmers, hackers, or developers. No offense to any of those categories.
So, what is it that you do when you aren't here? Clearly you have excelled in the areas of taking, breaking, and improving upon already amazing technology, so what is it that you chose to do with your lives outside of this? I don't think the answers will surprise me, but then again, I'm absolutely sure they will.
SHOOT!
(on a personal note): I am a server at a mid-scale high volume restaurant trying to make ends meat (get it?) while attending business school for a business management degree, after falling short on a game design degree due to lack of interest.
We have a thread for this discussion in the Off-Topic forum.
