If wifi and gps are off my location will not update using the network location. For example when I am at work and I open maps it shows my location as being near my home. I have been searching and can't find a solution to this problem. I'm currently on the current oxygen rom but have had this problem follow through on other roms. Hard resets don't fix it. This started maybe a month ago and I made no major changes at that time that I can remember. I wouldn't care too much but my Tasker profiles no longer work since my phone doesn't know where it is anymore.
Thanks in advance.

Is the wireless network check under location & security?
Yes it is. It will update periodically but will "stick" at that location for hours/days.

Lemme know if you find a fix. In my case I know what messed it up, location spoofer app.
Hmmm. My wifi and gps work but not 3g. Strange behavior. I have also tried clearing data for google services framewotk. It will find my location after that but then "sticks" again. Maybe that will fix your issue. Not sure though.

I tried every possible thing, clearing Dalvik cache, user Data, etc.. loading different roms..
Here's the funny part, the issue started after I used that spoofer app.
You seem to have an issue to communicate properly with satellites or weak signals over 3G in that particular location, may be inside a building...
Have you tried using the sensor tools like - Androsensor ?
Signal strength doesn't seem to play a part. I'm at home and have full bars and my location still doesn't update. What does androsensor tell you?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I just tried androsensor and it shows the same inaccurate location as maps. There must be some file that gets corruoted/altered that doesn't get changed with rom flashes or factory resets. I don't know enough about that though.

I meant the signal strength for satellites not the network signal. Androsensor can tell you if you are connected to satellite(s) and how many.
May be your device doesn't connect to satellites or gets a weak signal, so when you try GMaps, it shows last location that map was able to resolve.
If you can try it some other phone at same location on same 3G network, at least you'll know if t's the phone or service issue.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but my problem isn't gps. The gps works fine. It's my network location that doesn't update when gps is turned off.

Lately I have seen some more folks having issues with Gmaps or GPS on Nexus S.
I am waiting for some solutions to surface...
I may put my phone back to stock and take it in. See what sprint says. Probably get a replacement.

Okay, I'm going crazy with this issue. I reset my phone back to stock, the problem continued. I took the phone into a sprint store and they told me that I must have GPS enabled to show network location!? Clearly they don't understand what network location means. They also said that they confirmed this with customer service. They said there was nothing they could do and that the phone was working as intended. I argued but nothing was resolved, tough luck basically. I then went to the corporate store and they said the same thing. I have had a hero, epic, and my nexus, my wife has had an evo and has an epic touch, and my mom has an inspire and all of these phones network location updates to the current general location. The employees I spoke with insisted that their phones network location don't update.
So my new question is if there is something that states that network location should be updated every XX second or minutes or something like that so that I can show them that there is indeed a problem. Or is there something that sprint changed that is effecting the network location?
No man.... you are not going crazy. I am having the same issue on my Nexus S 4G. I have been trying to setup Tasker on my phone for days. But it never gets updated location from the Sprint network.
Any fixes, anybody?
Hi all. I've had a search but can't find much on this. A friend has a bog stock Telstra one xl running stock jb. The data connection works fine except written she's trying actually download a file like a pdf attached to an email or an app from the market. When the download starts, the phone switches to hspa mode, as you would expect and then the download pauses before and data is downloaded and the phone switches back to 3g mode. The download never resumes. It works fine on wifi.
I've tried force closing the download and google play apps as well as clearing their data and cache. I've reset the apns to default. I've tried creating a new apn as directed by Telstra's config site. I've tried using different google accounts.
Apart from doing a hard reset, does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks heaps

Curiously, will it download on WiFi?
If so, I suspect an Apn setting or perhaps carrier side issue maybe, will phone surf net on data side of things?

Sounds like it could be one of two things.
It could be that when the phone sleeps (screen times out) it switches to a low-power mode to save on battery. (check settings)
Also, If the setting for WiFi sleep is set to always, it will hold a connection even when the phone has timed out.
Or, it could be your friends location. It could be right on the edge of having HSPA+ on the coverage map, thus the phone gets a low HSPA+ signal and switches to WCDMA.

Yes, the phone will surf fine on mobile data just won't download actual files. Everything works fine on wifi.
I've checked the apns against my razr hd on the same network. Some were slightly different so i changed them to match. No difference. I reset the apns to default. No difference. I setup the apns to the carriers specifications including a proxy. No difference.
I think she may have to do a hard reset...

The location makes no difference. I'm sure it's not that.
As for the sleep thing. That would affect all mobile data. But you can be surfing on the internet, find a file to download but then the download will pause straight away. So i don't think it's that...
Thanks for the replies guys.

Just as a further note. I just tried forcing it use the 2g network only and the same problem persists. It uses EDGE to surf but any download instantly pauses...
Strange. Is there any chance an app could be causing it?
Sent from my XT925 using xda app-developers app
Yes, even in its own settings you can set a limit. But I'd expect a toast notification to alert you of that an not be able to surf.
Sounds like something missing in the apn yet to me but that's my feelings on it. My telus uses two, only carrier that does that I know of, I get ok speed on one but with second I get very fast speeds.

I've had a very similar thing happen to me as well. It's not restricted to downloading though, it happens while surfing too. So I initiate a download or load a web page or load a page on the XDA app, it switches to HSPA, then it will drop back to 3g and the download goes nowhere. Usually opening a web page (or initiating some other kind of data transfer) will switch it up to HSPA again and the download/web page will resume. It's not a constant thing, only sometimes.
I happen to live in a house with terrible Telstra signal and it happens mostly here. Like I said it's only every now and then for me though. Is the signal strength ok where your friend is?
Sent from my One XL using XDA Premium
No definitely nothing to do with location. You can have full coverage at the problem persists. My Razr hd works perfectly beside it and the one xl supposedly has better reception (blue tick) although I'm yet to see any evidence that the Razr actually has worse reception. It seems very good. Must have come very very close to getting blue tick too...

I need your help.
On my stock rooted (.77 KK) D6603 "com.sonyericsson.android.wakeup" is generating a massive amount of Alarm trigger and I think it is the reason of my phone not getting into deep sleep. It happens (when connected to 3G) at a scary pace of 12-13 per minute!!
It should be related to 3G switch to H+. I'm not pretty sure. In 2G it goes away.
Can you help? Am I the only one? I saw some similar issue with other Xperia(s), but nothing on the Z3.
Thanks.

com.sonyericsson.android.wakeup battery drain are usualy caused by fast dormancy (a quick explanation about Fast Dormancy...when your phone is connected via data (not wifi) your phone needs to enter certain states in order to maintain this connection. If your Operator does not have FD support or you have it disabled, then basically your states are just connected or not connected. What this means is that every time your phone connects to data, it will have to go through all of its internal functions in order to achieve the connection and perform the data transfer. This is slow and obviously the more processing that is required, the more the hit on battery. FD tries to limit this problem by having several different states. Each state has a different level of connection throughput and power consumption...but most of the time it is due to the antenna you connect to...)
to fix the wakelocks, find your carrier MCC and MNC in your APN settings, then with a root explorer go to etc/fast-dormancy/fd_custm_conf.txt from there edit the MCC and MNC that are set to 0 (zero) to the number you got from your APN, save the changes and reboot....
You should be all good after that, make a backup before changing anything (or at least backup your old fd_custm_conf.txt file) to stay on the safe side, I had to dig up my old xperia ion for this as I remembered that I had that same problem back then

Thanks a lot for the very informative help.
I guess I should first check if my carrier is supporting it or not (Vodafone in Italy). Any suggestion?
Then my concern is that when I'll be travelling and using data on roaming I'll have to switch back to original settings. Can you confirm?
Thanks a lot.

Can confirm the positive effect on battery of this change. I have D6633 on 3 uk and Vodafone. Active data set to 3.
About to got to Amsterdam, then Madrid, Germany and Austria in next week, then USA. Will report back any issues
I confirm a positive impact on sleep attitude of my phone as well as the fact the alarm com.sonyericsson.android.wakeup disappeared!!
I've also read that some providers (Vodafone ITA in my case) can use/enable FD at a cell level. This could be the explanation why I noticed a sudden decrease in battery life in my workplace. Could it be that they disabled FD at a certain point in time????
I'll report back about actual battery life impact in a couple of days.
Thanks.

Since it's carrier related (and or cell tower dependent) you might have to adjust accordingly...but that's going to be from your experience....from what I recall my Xperia ion was fine after that while traveling back then but I haven't used that phone in a long time and my Z3 right now doesn't have that issue....
Anyhow it's an easy fix if the matter returns while you travel
Glad I could help

I'm having similar issues, mine keeps defaulting to south of france
Try increasing accuracy of GPS by going to Settings-Privacy and Safety-Location-Locating Method and select GPS, wi-fi and mobile networks.
Carefull it gets worse, Russian hacking trojan / virus in the Official stock 5.1.1 OTA update, wait before you reset or do anything or Samsung will brick your phone for you on stock or modded rom's.
I have never heard of this Trojan. And I flashed an stock Ota.
Can you please elaborate?
I'm considering buying the European version of the xz premium for use in the US, since it comes with the fingerprint reader already enabled, and is about $100 USD cheaper. However, I've seen some people raise concern over the cell reception when running the European firmware. I'm wondering if anybody knows if this could be due to the European firmware not matching the physical bands included on the U.S. device (of if that's even a thing), and also if that could be somewhat solved by just getting it straight from Europe. Is there anybody that has the European version that could speak to the cell reception quality in the United States?
If you use the European device in the US, you also have to change the settings for the used bands.
There is an option to change used frequencies in *#*#4636#*#*. Guess that would make a difference since the hardware is always the same.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I didn't know that they all had the same physical bands
You don't need to change anything.
When you pop in US sim, all bands are available and appropriate LTE CA combinations are loaded.
3G calling will work, but you will miss out on VoLTE with euro region firmware.
Bought my XZP from Clove UK.. Using it in NYC.. No probs with reception.. No need to change anything, all I did was pop in the sim card, working great ?
I recommend to change the radio configuration to "United States" just in case.
I just popped in my AT&T sim and no problems. I did set the bands to the United States...makes no difference as everything works the same.
UK model G8141 here in US. I just put my AT&T sim and got LTE and great connection right away. No worries.
I ordered mine from Clove as well, and while it does seem to work just fine with my AT&T SIM, I always have only 0-2 bars of signal and the phone always shows 4G/4G+ instead of LTE. Anyone else have this issue? I've been trying to do some digging to see if perhaps there is some setting that I need to adjust such as the APN used or something to get better signal strength. Thoughts?

First of all, 4G in the UK is the same as LTE in the United States, so no issue there.
Do not look at the bars as this can be manipulated by the programmers. To see how strong your signal really is you need to go to settings > about phone > status > SIM status. The lower the number the better. I am fairly certain that if you DO NOT use 4G you will get a stronger signal which may be perfectly fine unless you need a real fast signal. By not using 4G you will be using 3G. Hope this helps! :good:

Oh good. I was wondering about whether or not the UK actually called it LTE like we do here.
My average signal strength seems to be -119dbm 99asu pretty much regardless of where I am in my city. It just seems weird since my Huawei Mate 9 got consistently better signal than this in the same market, with the same SIM, supporting the same frequencies. Just makes me wonder if there's something I'm missing or if I should try getting a new SIM from AT&T.

I doubt that a new SIM will help anything. Those numbers are quite high. Too high in my opinion. If you do not stream videos or something that needs very fast LTE signals, then I would choose to not use 4G. You should get a much lower number (better signal) and everything will still work just fine.

You mean having it download mms and Internet settings, then reboot? I've done that a couple times but I never rebooted after doing it. I did notice that in my APN settings, there are two for AT&T and I can't find an answer as to which one to use. One is called "phone" and the other is "nxtgenphone".
My download speeds aren't terrible but they aren't super amazing either. Last I checked it was 35mbps down and about 5mbps up. I'll try reprovisioning and restarting and see what happens. It just sucks not ever having more than 2 bars no matter where I am.
Edit: just tried downloading mms and Internet settings again but it didn't help. Maybe I should reset my network settings to default and try again just in case?

Mine is set to nxtgenphone. I really wouldn't focus on the bars. My z3 was also from the UK and did the same thing. You can check under the diagnostics settings screen to see what your data connection is or try doing the magic combo number to see what bands you're set to.
Is there anyone with a phone on the same carrier that would pull up their signal strength info so you can compare the actual numbers?

Maybe someone can give me some but others have told me that averaging -119dbm 95asu is a pretty weak signal.
Others have said I shouldn't need to change any settings in the hidden phone menu, but I set it to United States just to be safe. I didn't mess with any network settings in there aside from that.
Edit: checked radio band setting and set it to United States. Network preferred type is set to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL). Not sure if I need to change any of these settings or not.

Whenever I test it in the hidden menu the IPv6 test always fails. Even AT&T's official documentation says not to use the IPv6 but I'm not sure what to believe since the downloaded settings have it enabled.
