[Q] Why are Samsung phones region based? - General Questions and Answers

I've been wondering why same Samsung deices have different PDAs and regions? Why don't they have the same regions?
If they were from one region, they could easily be upgraded to newer android OS. I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition with a UAE ROM, and i have gotten the latest update, kitkat. But my friend with the same device but with a different region hasn't received the update. Why?

Some of it is to discourage gray-market imports, some of it would be localization (I'd expect a phone or tablet for Mexico would default to Spanish language, for instance), and some of it has to do with what frequencies and network types are supported, and certification from local communications authorities. Even in the US, an S6 from T-Mobile is not at all the same as one from Verizon. In the US, Wi-Fi channels 12, 13, and 14 are not legal to use, and other countries also have restrictions on certain channels.

Which Note Edge variant to buy?

Hi Everyone,
I would like to buy a Note Edge very soon but i wanted to ask which variant should I get - I do plan on rooting the device asap and flashing various themes so I want the most compatible variant for this. Currently I am now in Australia and the SM-N915G are very much available everywhere, however I did notice slightly more development for the SM-N915FY (EU version) will there be incompatibility between the G & Y versions?
Thanks.

first, NO n915F(Y) rom is not compatible with N915G.
i own an SM-N915G (snapdragon) which i love. as you noticed yourself, there are no custom ROMs for this variant. BUT hey who needs a custom rom when there is Xposed? i customize every thing with it. pretty much all the things that i love about the root is in Xposed.
My friend owns the 915F (which is compatible with 915FY), and he's got the same stuff i got (no custom Rom, only Xposed).
bottom line, i suggest N915G for you because it's Australian. and it's Snapdragon which i like more.
and the official Lollipop is already available for N915G too. :good: :good: it's smooth as hell
As mentioned above, its best to get the variant that is usable in your region for compatibility and service purposes.
I have the SM-N915G model but the Note Edge isn't sold in my country (at least not yet).
If I ever need repairs or service done to my Note Edge, all I need to do is fly to Singapore where I bought the phone from.
And the bonus part, the SM-N915G has an official Lollipop update.
so the sm-n915fy is an octacore?
will it work with lte att on USA?
No F(Y) it's SD-805
Essentially Samsung got sick of people buying grey import phones for cheaper from different regions and instead now make different models WITH THE SAME HARDWARE for different regions.
Unfortunately, you can't flash the ROMs of a different region...
Looks like Sammy is going the way of Apple.... Not so Dev friendly anymore if the ROM for 1 region can't be used on the same hardware but a different model number (region) device...
I can only speak of the FY variant. I bought it in Germany and so far very satisfied. The OS is really fluid, never experienced a hiccup so far, but I dont use facebook or twitter but all other messaging apps are there (z.B whatsapp, viber, skype and fring )with notifications turned on.
I get between 3,5-4 hours SOT depending on LTE Usage.
I'm still on kitkat and don't mind lollipop anyways cause I had the LG G3 before this handset and tried it already last year and can say that ART wasn't that drastic change as Android Hyped it. so I'm waiting for a stable lollipop.
Hope I helped
I live in the U.S. and bought a SM-N915T unlocked using AT&T and so far it's working out well.
I agree with staying with phones for your region. I have read that in the U.S. that you can use a F, FY, or G version unlocked but you may not get 4G LTE and you have to use a SIM card for overseas.

Best CSC for S7 SM-G930FD in US

I have a greymarket import S7 Duos with the CSC OJV (which is either middle east or africa depending on the source) and it still hasn't received the June firmware update. I'd like to switch my CSC to get timely firmware updates. Does it make any difference which CSC I use? Is there any that would be best based on update timeliness and/or compatibility with US carriers (T-Mobile/AT&T)?
Also, is there any way to download stack firmware images direct from Samsung rather than going through shady third parties?

The thing is you need updates for a G930FD , all the available firmware are from this countries at the moment

India is a good option as they get updates very often , compatibility? if your phone is working fine now it should work fine with any of this...
CSC change, you have to do a factory reset
Check this thread , it shows you how to change csc or flash a newer firmware without waiting for the update (odin) BUT you should do it with G930FD firmware there they use G930F firmware , the basics are the same
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/how-to/official-stock-firmware-update-odin-t3369431
This thread says that the single sim firmware and dual sim firmware are interchangeable. Am I misunderstanding something?
As far as carrier compatibility, the phone works, but I don't have visual voicemail. Also not sure if I'm missing other features like VoLTE.
The Spain firmware has wifi calling and Samsung pay. I don't know if you can make wifi calling work but you can tweak Samsung pay for USA market.

Same here. On the FD version.. My problem is dual SIM not really working. Yes, I have two numbers and. That's about it. Data doea not work. Disabling SIM2 and. SIM1 works LTE on AT&T. No VoLTE obviiusly so I can't comment about it. With an xposed module, my Android pay works. You will most. Likely won't be able to make Samsung Pay work. I did a massive reading and can't tell you one person that was able to set it up and use it in a store . my advice to you is forget about OTA. Don't be scared about the Knox bit, trip it, and install TWRP and a custom ROM. those get normally the latest firmware in them, with recent security patches, and some of them are even OTA by themselves. You can also hey rid of tons of bloatware this way. I wouldn't bother dealing with changing CSC from Egypt to India. Since you are already at XDA I guess you know what to do.

If you boot into download mode, the phone will even display G930F as its model number. You can run F firmware on an FD without issue. As for the dual SIM working, I haven't tested it, but I did read that SIM1 has full connectivity, while SIM2 is limited to 2G/3G. You can't have two 4G SIMcards active at the same time.
I'm running Samsung pay perfectly fine on UAE firmware. Samsung pay is unfortunately firmware dependent. However, if you trip KNOX you're not going to be able to use Samsung Pay ever again. And to be completely honest, if you're not using Samsung pay, you shouldn't be using an S7; get yourself a better phone like the G5/Nexus/V10/Moto X. The S7 lacks a lot that other phones bring to the table, assuming that you don't care much for photo quality.

Would wifi calling work on US T-MOBILE?
Same question here. I'm using Tracfone and T-Mobile sim cards, and my G930FD is from United Arab Emirates. There is a Islamic calendar in the S Planner which I was unable to get rid of, so I found the UK firmware and CSC from Sammobile. After flashing those files to phone, the Wifi calling and Samsung Pay still won't work. Otherwise the UK firmware works fine, since there's no bloatware or funny stuff(like calendar from other country). Dual sim works with no issue too. Still hope to find a better CSC file for Samsung Pay and Wifi Calling.
My G930FD is a Singapore set and Samsung Pay has been available for quite a while now.
I recently flashed the UK BTU firmware, seems to have less bloat but Samsung Pay isn't available, side loading didn't seem to work either.
I flashed the UK firmware hoping to get faster security patches, so far still on July. But not sure if just me, but phone feels a bit snappier and fingerprint sensor seems more accurate on July vs June's.
Where are you all getting the stock firmware for different countries?

When you had the Singapore firmware, did you actually use Samsung Pay successfully? I have a 930FD that is for the UAE, but Samsung Pay wasn't on it and it didn't work when I sideloaded it. I flashed it to the the BTU version and was able to sideload it and log in, but it won't take any of my credit cards here in the USA. Also, the signal strength on AT&T is much weaker than another phone that I have that is made for the American market.
Should I try to find a firmware that is still located in the same region as the UAE with Samsung Pay and without the annoying bloatware the UAE mandates for their phones? Would India be good?

Samsung Pay worked when I was on the SG firmware. It also worked when I flashed the Australia unbranded firmware, even though I was in Singapore. By working I mean I'm able to add cards, make contactless transactions and so on.
So Pay should work on any firmware that it's officially available in, regardless where you use it.
I would try Australia, minimal bloat. F / FD firmwares work interchangeably.

Question Changing Region on Watch 4 Classis BT Version R890 for Samsung Pay

Hello, I have purchased this watch 4 classic 46mm BT version in August last year. It just showed a host of Latin American Countries on start-up and I was unable to change it to somewhere that is officially listed on the list of countries that supports samsung pay. I know a fix for the LTE version has been suggested on this forum but so far I couldn't find anything on the BT version yet. Does anyone have any experience with this who can share with me please? Any input is very much appreciated, thanks!
I've been living in Australia for 13 years, I went to Italy and decided to buy a watch4, I totally ignored the CSC.
Now I can't add my Australian cards to google pay or Samsung Pay even if they work on my phone

Question Using an Indian bought S22 Ultra in the UK

Hi all! Hope you're well and safe.
I'm moving to the UK soon and bought a S22 Ultra a couple of days ago. Did not find out about Samsung's inexplicable and baffling region locks on the phones and certain features (Samsung Pay, etc.) before I bought the phone. Consequently, I've been researching on all issues I think I could face once I move to the UK later this month. Had a few questions about the same, so thought I'd reach out for help here.
a) I understand that Samsung Pay will not be available in the UK on my Indian S22, due to the region lock. Is this correct? To clarify, I don't intend to change the CSC if I'll only be losing Samsung Pay, as I'm sure Google Pay will be sufficient.
b) I understand that UK S22s are Exynos-based and not Snapdragon-based. Therefore, am I correct in assuming that I will be unable to flash UK firmware on my device, due to the SoCs being different?
c) I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. I tried installing Google Pay on my watch, but was unable to find the app on the Play Store. Further reading led me to Google Pay's website, which states that Google Pay for Wear OS is only available in select countries, including the UK, with India not being included. Would I be correct in assuming that once I change the country on my Google account, I will have access to the app on my watch? Also, would the watch automatically have access to apps in the UK once my Google account's country is changed?
d) I understand that the international version of the S22 Ultra (which I believe is the model I'm using) will have no problems connecting to 5G networks in the UK, since most networks in the UK use band 78. Can anyone who's travelled to the UK confirm if they've been able to successfully access 5G networks in the UK on their Indian S22s?
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Grateful for any help I can get!
Cheers!
If your device is SM-S980E which I belive is the Indian & International model , then it will support 5G in UK for sure. Both the European devices & the International ddevices support the same 5G bands , they used to be the same version before.
Samsung pay should work But you won't get Uk exclusive offers
Google pay will work once you travel to UK
Hi OP. I am moving to UK too in a fortnight. Were you able to change the country code?
a b c yes
d likely because Indian (E model) and UK (B model) have same 4G/5G bands.

Question WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SM-G996U VS SM-G996U1

I HAVE SAMSUNG S21PLUS MODEL NO SM-G996U IN 2023 STILL WORKING ON ANDRIOD 11 AND I WANT TO UPDATE TO ANDRIOD 13 BUT AUTO UPDATE IS NOT COMING
I TRIED IT DOING IT MANUALLY FROM SAM MOBILE WHERE THERE ARE TWO UPDATE AVAILABLE FROM SM-G996U1 SHOULD I USE THAT FIRMWARE OR ONLY SM-G996U WOULD WORK ?
One's carrier unlocked, one's AT&T.
Either version will work on AT&T except you might lose vid calling with the U1 version.
I would stay on 11... personally I'll never go beyond 10 on my N10+'s. Zero trust in Gookill.
G996U is any US carrier's phone, not just AT&T. My T-Mobile S23+ is an SM-G996U. (and it remains a 996U even after is's unlocked)
